Imagine this: You’re working late to finish an important project you’ve been toiling through all week. You’re exhausted, but the deadline is tomorrow; for now rest is not an option. Your focus, stamina, and time are quickly running out, and suddenly you’re stuck reaching for another cup of coffee, soda, or an energy-shot to get you through the night.

Rhodiola rosea has been used to address athletic stamina, weight, sexual health, memory, mood, and fatigue!

If only you had known at the beginning of this project that there was something you could do to prepare yourself for the stress and sleep deprivation! Perhaps it could have been avoided, or at the very least lessened. Because there is, in fact, another option when it comes to boosting your energy–one that doesn’t come with jitters, added sugar, or mystery chemicals and artificial flavors. So what is it, you ask? Let us introduce you to Rhodiola rosea.

Rhodiola rosea is an adaptogenic herb that originates from the Arctic regions of Europe and Asia. In those areas, Rhodiola rosea has been used medicinally for centuries; in the United States, it has just recently begun to receive the recognition it deserves. As a tonic, Rhodiola rosea has been used to address a bulk of health matters, from athletic stamina, weight, and sexual health, to memory and mood. But among all of Rhodiola rosea’s impressive functions, there is one that stands out to us the most: attending to fatigue.

If you’re anything like the average American, the scenario we shared at the beginning of this article probably sounded a little too familiar. As a country, we have earned the reputation of being workaholics, and rightfully so! Americans work longer days, take fewer vacations, and retire later than a majority of the rest of the world, including the English, French, Germans, and–more recently–even the Japanese. And in a culture where workhorses appear to be, well, just normal horses, it can be difficult, even career-damaging, to always walk away when you need a break.

Of course, nothing will refresh you quite like the typical advice: eating nutritious meals, staying physically active, and getting adequate sleep are must-do’s for fighting chronic fatigue and generally staying in good health. But if you’re still running out of time and energy every once in a while (and who isn’t?), supplementing with Rhodiola rosea could be the ace up your sleeve.

Rhodiola rosea contains both salidroside and rosavins–phytochemicals that allow the herb to interact with the central nervous system (brain and spine) to alter the way our bodies deal with stress and fatigue. Studies have shown that these constituents may affect the amounts and activities of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters are known to be responsible for our feelings of happiness, reward-based behavior, and preparing our brains and bodies for action, respectively. Studies suggest that Rhodiola rosea restricts the enzymes responsible for deteriorating these neurotransmitters, and helps to move them more easily around the brain, making them more available for use.

By normalizing physiological imbalances, adaptogens
stabilize our bodies and allow them to function at their highest, healthiest capacity.

Of course, these effects are most notable when using a high-quality supplement, and not all Rhodiolas are created equal. The most important factor when choosing a supplement is to ensure that it is Rhodiola rosea. While there are several species of Rhodiola, only Rhodiola rosea contains rosavins–those useful phytochemicals that allow Rhodiola rosea to work on your nervous system. For this reason, rosavins are now the accepted marker for genetically pure Rhodiola rosea.

After you have confirmed the species of Rhodiola, you’ll also want to check that the supplement is standardized for both rosavins and salidroside. When a constituent is standardized, it is guaranteed to be present in the listed amount (usually a percentage) in the supplement. Since rosavins and salidroside are the known active compounds in Rhodiola rosea, you’ll want to be sure that they are available in adequate amounts in any Rhodiola supplement you choose to take. In clinical studies, the standardization of Rhodiola rosea is often 3% rosavins and 1% salidroside.

Keep in mind, however, that there could very well be useful constituents in Rhodiola rosea that are still unobserved by scientists, and you don’t want to leave them out! Therefore, it would be wise to stick to a supplement that is also full spectrum. Full-spectrum supplements contain all constituents of an herb, in the same ratios naturally found in the plant, guaranteeing you get some of everything it has to offer.

As always, look for a supplement that is all-natural. There are many supplements that contain fillers, binders, flowing agents, and other chemicals. While the price of these supplements may be lower, it comes at the cost of purity and efficacy. Remember: the quality of your supplements will directly affect the quality of your results, so choose wisely!

Take, for example, the full spectrum Rhodiola rosea supplement from the Adaptogens® line by Kroeger Herb Products®. Each vegetarian capsule contains 276 mg of Rhodiola rosea root extract in a base of 161 mg of raw Rhodiola rosea root. It is standardized to 3% rosavins and 1% salidroside, and contains no added chemicals. Kroeger Herb’s Rhodiola Rosea is available for sale at Hanna’s Herb Shop, as well as other wellness stores and practitioners across the country.

A quality Rhodiola rosea supplement can lead to better quality of life, relieved of fatigue and the unhealthy habits typically used to fight it. You can nourish your nervous system and put everything you’ve got into everything you have to do. So, the next time you’re starting to feel burned out, reach for a bottle of Rhodiola rosea and take back your energy and your life, the natural way.

Rhodiola isn’t the only superb herb you should check out! There are plenty of adaptogenic plants, each with something wonderful to bring to those seeking to live a busy but healthy lifestyle.

Adaptogens are natural substances that help the body adapt to physical, biological, emotional, and environmental stressors. By normalizing physiological imbalances, adaptogens stabilize our bodies and allow them to function at their highest, healthiest capacity. Adaptogens are defined by their non-specific response in the body, going to work wherever they are needed most. In addition to being tonics, many adaptogens are unique in that they have particular strengths relating to certain ailments, such as energy, anxiety, insomnia, sexual health, immune strength, depression, and beyond. We believe there is an adaptogen for everyone!

Want to learn more about these extraordinary herbs? Keep an eye on our blog for more posts in our series on adaptogens! Next we will detail the nutrient-packed superfood, Goji Berry!

Now more than ever, women are free and focused to chase after all of their personal and professional dreams, but with these opportunities there are often obstacles, and there are some only women understand.

Our bodies are amazing – beautiful, strong, and dynamic – but most of us have our moments when it feels more like being bloated, moody, and downright exhausted than anything goddess-like. On those off-days it can be hard to answer any of our many callings, and that’s when our focus needs to turn inwards. As the saying goes, you can’t pour from an empty glass… so think: What can I do, what can I give to myself, to feel better? One answer is shatavari.

Shatavari is a flowering plant related to asparagus and native to South Asia. It is a very popular herb in the world of natural-health, with tight ties to Ayurveda, a form of traditional Indian medicine. Its name has been translated to “curer of a hundred diseases” and “she who has 100 husbands,” and I often call it “nature’s gift to women” myself. An adaptogenic herb, shatavari normalizes ailments in the body and promotes general wellness, but it also has more specialized uses, many related specifically to the female body.

This is largely because shatavari contains phytoestrogens – naturally occurring compounds that are very similar to estrogen, the major female sex hormone. Because of their similarities, phytoestrogens act very much like “regular” estrogen, effecting body processes that typically must rely on the hormone.

One of these processes is menopause. During pre-menopause, hormone levels become irregular, often varying dramatically, before sharply decreasing post-menopause. Plants that contain phytoestrogens, like shatavari, help to diminish the effects of low-estrogen levels by providing compounds that can perform many of the same functions as estrogen. By supplementing with shatavari, menopausal women can see improvement of many of their symptoms, including mood swings, hot flashes, and depression.

Shatavari can also help with the similar symptoms that women experience related to their menstrual cycle. Right before and at the beginning of a period, a woman’s estrogen levels are extremely low, which may play a role in the occurrence of premenstrual syndrome (better known simply as PMS). According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, over 90% of women experience PMS to some degree. By supplementing with shatavari, thus increasing their intake of phytoestrogens, many of these women could soothe the unpleasant symptoms of low-estrogen levels associated with menstruation. Plus, shatavari is also known to relieve pain – a gift to those who suffer from menstrual cramps and headaches.

Speaking of gifts, those looking to conceive can also benefit from taking shatavari. In addition to being an aphrodisiac, the herb tones and nourishes the female reproductive organs and ovum (egg). In doing so, shatavari prepares the body for pregnancy and optimizes fertility. Bonus: It has been shown to increase sperm count too, so don’t be shy about sharing with the father-to-be!

Shatavari also has uses for mothers already blessed with a new bundle-of-joy. One of the most effective and popular herbs for nursing women, shatavari is a known galactagogue – an herb that promotes healthy lactation. Sometimes called “herbal Domperidone,” shatavari both increases the supply and promotes the flow of breast milk. It has been found to be especially helpful for women who are trying to maintain lactation while trying to conceive.

And all of this is in addition to being an adaptogen! Adaptogenic herbs do what their name suggests: adapt to each individual’s specific needs, normalizing whatever isn’t right in the body. So beyond providing hormonal and reproductive support, shatavari is also successfully used to support the gastrointestinal, urinary, nervous, immune systems, and more.

Truly, shatavari has something for everyone. Whether you are looking to balance your hormones, boost your fertility and lactation, or simply nourish and stabilize your body, I implore you to give yourself the gift of shatavari.

Kit. It is also used alone as a powerful anti-viral.

VYR-33 Defense contains Eucalyptus, Club Moss, Tarragon, Condurango Bark, Tea Leaf, and Jasmine Flower. This herbal blend is used for dealing with chronic virus conditions and the increased toxin load these infections bring to the body. It is most often taken with the VYR Defense and B.E. Vibropathic in the B.E. Kit, although it shines on its own! Learn more about this special combination and how it can support the many issues of modern living.

Chronic virus conditions, such as Epstein Barr thrive in an environment of immune deficiency. When immune function is impaired, secondary infections from other viruses, bacteria, fungi, yeasts and parasites may set up shop. This increased load of toxins weakens the systems of the body and inflammation can set in. Respiratory infections can be common as well as digestive disturbances ranging from improper assimilation of nutrients to poor elimination. Immune function is further impaired creating a vicious cycle of ill health.

Viruses also cause emotional upset. They can bring on irritability and depression. Plus, a stressed body is more susceptible to viral infection. Natural treatments of chronic or lingering viruses are aimed at strengthening immune response, cleansing toxins from the body and treating symptoms.

Read on for a description of each unique herb and its qualities.

Eucalyptus leaves have been used in folk medicine for thousands of years and is an important part of VYR-33 Defense.

Eucalyptus is an amazing plant with many healing actions. It acts as an expectorant, loosening phlegm, and also helps to reduce swelling of the respiratory tract mucous membranes. Eucalyptus has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. It also activates immune system response, helping the body fight off infection!

Club Moss has a long history of use in homeopathic medicine. As an herbal, it helps with symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, headaches, sore throat, exhaustion, and digestive disturbances. It promotes healing by drying up excess moisture in the body and absorbing fluid from damaged tissues. Club Moss offers support to the immune system when dealing with the symptoms of viral conditions such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Tarragon is a close relative to Wormwood. It has superior anti-oxidant properties and is rich in potassium. It fights parasites and is used in the treatment of indigestion, nausea, gas, and poor elimination. Its sedative qualities make it good for hypertension and stress. Tarragon helps to cool and soothe the body, lowering fevers and inflammation.

Condurango Bark increases circulation and cleanses the liver & blood of toxins. This supports the healing processes in the body and discourages abnormal cell formation. Condurango Bark is reported to have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant actions. It aids digestion, calms the stomach, increases bile production and stimulates the appetite.

Tea contains a group of antioxidants called flavonoids. One particular group of flavonoid, catechins, appears to inhibit viral infections by binding to the virus and preventing the virus from entering the host cells. They also act by blocking viral enzyme activity. Another flavonoid, Theaflavin, reduces inflammation in the body, and has been seen to reduce and block production of viruses in the cells. Theaflavin is able to inhibit the entry of some viruses to its host by blocking the absorption and penetration processes. Tea helps detoxify chemicals from the body by boosting metabolism, fights free radicals, and protects the cells!

Jasmine Flower has traditionally been used in folk medicine to increase metabolism and combat parasites. It breaks up mucus and other waste accumulations thought to be ideal breading grounds for infectious agents. It has febrifuge, antiseptic, antidepressant and analgesic properties.

VYR-33 Defense is a synergistic combination that works on the entire body, cleansing and supporting. This formula is used for those deep rooted chronic viruses and the harmful secondary infections they invite in.

VYR-33 Defense is paired with the VYR Defense Formula and B.E. Vibropathic in Hanna’s extremely popular B.E. Kit. The VYR Defense combines the treasured herbs of Raspberry Leaves, Basil and Lettuce and really packs a punch on seasonal illnesses. These herbs have exceptionally powerful antioxidant properties which support the immune system and help protect the cell membranes from damage. They also help soothe the mucus lining of body tissues. Red Raspberry Leaves are astringent and provide many vitamins and minerals. The volatile oils and flavonoids of Basil protect cell structure, inhibit viral and bacterial growth, and block enzymes in the body that cause swelling. Lettuce is high in vitamins and minerals. It improves circulation and helps to remove toxins. VYR Defense formula is a gem for cold and flu season. Its anti-viral properties are an added benefit to following a regimen with VYR-33 Defense. The B.E. Vibropathic is indicated for Epstein Barr Virus which is responsible for infectious mononucleosis.

Together, these 3 items have been a long time valued defense against viral issues. But don’t pass on the amazing healing benefits that VYR-33 Defense holds on its own! This is one truly unique formula that Hanna Kroeger felt was very important!

Do you ever wonder how herbs get from growing fields to your kitchen cupboard? The intricacies of herbal commerce may be more complex – and important – than you realize! How and where herbs are grown, stored, processed, and packaged can have a tremendous impact on their composition and effectiveness as supplements.

The founder of Kroeger Herb Products, Hanna Kroeger, knew that the quality of her herbs translated directly to how they would affect the health of her customers. So, since Hanna first started selling her products in 1957, we have been searching the world over for the best farmers and harvesters, the best transportation and testing partners, and the best manufacturing processes and retailers, to bring you the best herbal supplement products on Earth. Come with us as we discuss the ins-and-outs of this $32-billion industry with true-to-life examples from Kroeger Herb Products’ very own day-to-day operations.

Herbal medicine has spanned numerous cultures throughout human history, so it should come as no surprise that it remains a global market to this day. That’s not to say, however, that all growers and harvesters are the same. Many are located right here in the United States, while most of the largest operations are based in China and India. Not all herbs are grown on farms even, as many are a product of wild-crafting – sustainable harvesting of wild-growing herbs.

As with size and location, quality can vary immensely from one supplier to the next. The aforementioned large operations in China and India are often known more for quantity than quality… Consider, for example, that 49-million acres (that’s roughly half the size of California) of Chinese farmland is treated with yield-boosting polyethylene mulch. While the plastic mulch does trap heat and moisture in the soil, which is good for growing, the chemicals are damaging to the environment and also have the potential to cause cancer. So while such practices are sure to increase production, they certainly do not insure quality or sustainability. And as mentioned before, mediocre herbs don’t lead to optimum health, so these operations are best avoided.

Luckily, thanks to a strong push from the supplement industry, herb quality overall seems to be steadily improving. And of course, some great suppliers do exist in all areas, and one should always dedicate considerable research to finding these worthy growers, no matter where they may be.

Apple bark being harvested for Hanna Kroeger’s H-12 Tincture was grown at Ya Ya Farm and Orchard in Colorado with natural and organic farming methods.

At Kroeger Herb Products, although we do have long-term relationships with many farmers, a majority of our herbs are purchased through global distributors. Through these distributors we are connected to healthy, sustainable growing and harvesting operations from around the globe. Some of our regular suppliers can be found right here in Colorado, while others are as far as Eastern Europe, Madagascar, Brazil, China, and India. But no matter how close or how far our herbs come from, each and every one is tested before it can become an ingredient in Kroeger Herb’s products.

The entire American herbal supplement industry is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.), which makes strong suggestions as to which tests should be performed on commercial herbal products. At Kroeger, every ingredient of every product is tested for microbiological contaminants including heavy metals, harmful bacterium, and pesticides, as well as mold and yeast. Though no specific tests are required by the F.D.A., internal protocol at Kroeger Herb Products does require said tests. Herbs are also tested to ensure they have been correctly identified and labeled. Testing takes from five days to two weeks, and can cost hundreds of dollars per run.

The parameters for contaminants in herbal supplements are extremely low, and are arguably much more stringent than those placed on other food products. For example, the acceptable level of pesticides for herbs is “non-detectable” – meanwhile, thousands of pesticides are used on other food products, such as meat and produce, and are tolerated as residue even after the food has been introduced to commerce. But despite the lack of pesticides in herbal products, you may notice that many brands (including Kroeger Herb) are not certified organic; this is because certification requires that the plants must be grown, not only on a farm, but on a certified organic farm and, as mentioned earlier, many herbs are harvested from the wild.

There are, of course, some things that cannot be tested for, including genetically modified organisms (G.M.O.’s). In order to do so, the complete genetic profile (D.N.A.) of the unaltered herb would have to be matched against all known artificial genomes for said plant. Considering that the human genome was not even fully mapped until 2003, it is highly unlikely we will know the complete genome of any commercial herb in the near future. That is why, though we do not search out G.M.O.’s, it is so difficult to confirm that they are not present; it is essentially impossible. Luckily, however, herbs are not among the botanicals that are commonly altered in this way.

Once testing has been completed and the herbs have been approved for use, they are processed into their desired form. As most of Kroeger’s herbal products are sold in capsule form, very often our first step is to mill the herbs in machinery akin to a giant blender. When being put into this “blender,” the herbs are channeled over incredibly strong rare-Earth magnets. These are used to catch and remove any and all undesired, ferrous metal items that may become mixed into the herbs during harvesting, like broken pieces of farm equipment, for example. Once inside the mill, the herbs are blended until they reach their desired size and consistency for encapsulation.

Some companies also combine their herbs with artificial fillers, flowing agents, or excipients, like magnesium stearate, maltodextrin, and silicon dioxide – or solvents such as hexane, acetone, and methanol. These substances are intended to make the herbs easier to work with by allowing them to flow through production equipment more smoothly. Additives can also make products more cost-effective. While we recognize these benefits, Kroeger Herb prefers to offer our customers only the purest raw herbs available, so no additives are ever used in our herbal products. Though this may make our manufacturing processes more intensive, we believe it is worth it.

After our herbs are milled and put into vegetarian-sourced capsules, they are transferred to production where they will be put into bottles. We do this with bottling machinery operated by one to two employees, which allows for speedy, partially-automated production, without sacrificing the supervision of trained eyes that can ensure the products are perfectly packaged. Once bottling is complete, a set percentage of all completed product is checked by hand by quality-assurance personnel to confirm the bottling procedure was accurate and that the products are ready to be released for sale.

As a distributer of our own products, a large amount of our stock remains on-site, where it is sold directly to various retailers and practitioners around the world. Some of our closest customers are right in the same county, while some of our furthest are in Canada, England, France, Hong Kong, and Japan.

Another large amount of stock is sold to outside distributors, who also sell to retail stores and practitioners. These larger distributors carry sizable amounts of various products from many different brands, making them the ideal supplier for those who carry a diversity of products and brands all in one store. Once ordered, products are shipped out to your local stores and clinics for you to browse.

Twelve different ingredients make up these products sourced from all over the world.

With so many products containing an abundance of ingredients, sourced from a variety of locations, brought to you by numerous brands, it’s understandable that deciding which to purchase can become overwhelming! We recommend looking for those which are grown and harvested by reputable sources, regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, and include no artificial ingredients. Remember the intricacies of herbal commerce and how each of the processes involved affects all of the supplements you have to choose from.

Since 1978, Kroeger Herb Products has focused on quality first, because if our herbs are pure and healthy, our customers can be too. We hope that with insight to the herbal supplement industry, you will discover the very best nature has to offer: clean herbs and optimum health.

Bonita V is formulated with a high amount of Biotin.

Grape Seed Extract– Improves the elasticity of the skin.

With the added proprietary blend called Revytalyz 5 (Fo-ti Root, Hyaluronic Acid, Bioflavonoids, Gotu Kola, and Bioperine) Bonita V packs a punch by stimulating regrowth, and replenishing hyaluronic acid and collagen located in the deep dermal layer of your skin. It may also help to prevent grey hair, heal the skin, and slow the natural destruction of collagen that comes with aging.

Bonita V delivers a very powerful ‘one a day’ formula for the hair, skin, and nails, with over a thousand milligrams of active ingredients in a single rapid response tablet!

Eating a variety of fresh vegetables can help give your body the vitamins it needs.

All foods contain some amounts of vitamins, although it is increasing difficult to obtain all the vitamins we need from food alone. It is also difficult to discern the best supplements from the vast selection available in the market. Here’s a look at the individual vitamins our body needs and what supplement forms we like best.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin that protects your cells against damaging free radicals. It is beneficial for growth and development, the eyes, and many skin conditions. Being fat soluble means it can build up to toxic levels, causing liver damage. It is important to follow guidelines for proper dosing information. Beta-carotene is a popular alternative to Vitamin A supplements. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant that is transformed into Vitamin A in your body, as your body needs it. There is much less risk of toxicity with beta-carotene, however, thyroid hormone is needed to convert Beta-carotene into Vitamin A, so individuals with hypothyroid conditions should choose Vitamin A instead of beta-carotene. It’s also why so many people with hypothyroid are deficient in Vitamin A. Hanna taught that supplementing with Vitamin A after clearing parasite infections, especially fluke infections, is important for rebuilding tissue.

Hanna’s Herb Shop carries 3 different forms of Vitamin A:

Vitamin A 10,000 IU– a sublingual supplement that goes to work fast!

Vitamin A– a natural source of vitamin A from fish liver oil in a softgel form.

Beta- Carotene, Natural– a softgel ‘precursor’ to vitamin A.

B Vitamins

The B Vitamins assist in energy production and immune function. They help with proper brain function and mood regulation. If your stress levels are high or if your mood feels off balance then you might benefit from taking a B supplement. Single B’s are available if you are interested in targeting one area at a time, but it’s always a good idea to take B Vitamins together for the synergistic way they work in the body. Taking extra of any of of the B’s with your multi-B works well. We like the complexes that provide a powerful amount of several or even all of the B Vitamins!

Biotin– plays an important role in metabolizing the energy we get from food. It assists in enzyme function and promotes healthy skin, hair, and nails. Can be beneficial in treating baldness.

Thiamine- B1– is used to process fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Energy levels and proper heart functioning depend on proper Vitamin B1 levels.

Riboflavin- B2– is used for energy production and to help combat migraine headaches. It also activates B6 and Folate in the body.

Hanna’s Anti-Fatigue combines B vitamins to give your body a boost!

Niacin- B3– is required for the metabolism of carbohydrates and protein into energy. It also supports cardiovascular health and promotes blood flow. This B vitamin is known for creating a “flush” on the skin that feels like a temporary slight sunburn. This “flush” does actually open up the blood vessels and “flushes” the circulatory system which can be temporarily uncomfortable, but excellent for cholesterol levels and helps with relaxation and sleep. Taking with food can help control the amount of “flush” a person experiences. Niacinamide is a form of Niacin that doesn’t produce the typical flushing effect. It also does not have the benefits of lowering cholesterol or promoting relaxation. Some evidence has shown, however, that it may be more effective than Niacin at increasing circulation inside joints so it may be a good choice for joint inflammation.

Pyridoxine- B6– plays a big role in making proteins, hormones and neurotransmitters (such as serotonin). It may help to relieve symptoms of PMS and reduce nausea and morning sickness.

Pantothenic Acid– speeds up wound healing and is essential for the proper functioning of the adrenal glands, digestive tract, nerves, and skin.

Folic Acid- B9– may reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and birth defects. It supports healthy nervous system function. Folic Acid is the synthetic form of folate and is actually much more commonly found than folate. It is well tolerated and utilized by most people. However, if you have some types of MTHFR, a genetic mutation (see http://mthfr.net/ for more information), your body will have issues processing folic acid, or won’t do so as efficiently. Use folate instead and avoid foods “enriched” with added folic acid.

Cobalamin- B12– is required for the normal activity of nerve cells, and works with folate and vitamin B6 to promote heart health. It also improves sperm count and mobility. Good bacteria in the gut can often produce most of your body’s requirement of Vitamin B12. If your gut is compromised (including having taken antibiotics) then your B12 might be low. The highest concentrations of B12 come from animal protein. Vegetarians sometimes find it difficult to consume enough B12 through food and may benefit from a supplement. B12 deficiency is quite common and anyone with low energy levels should take a look at this vitamin.

Choline– is useful for normal brain and memory function and in treating high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Inositol-B8– is helpful for depression and anxiety.

Para-amino benzoic acid (PABA) – is useful in metabolism and promotes healthy skin, hair and red blood cells. Hanna recommended taking 1,000 mg of PABA 4 times a day for 4 weeks for skin pigment discoloration issues.

DMG (N-Dimethyl Glycine) – B15– is more closely related to an amino acid than a vitamin. It supports immune function, improves oxygenation, and boosts mental acuity.

Apricot kernels are naturally high in vitamin b17.

Laetrile- B17– is a controversial vitamin that is gaining interest and popularity. One of the greatest concentrated sources comes from Apricot Kernels.

Frequent alcohol use depletes several of the B Vitamins. Many over-the-counter and prescription drugs interfere with the absorption of certain B vitamins. A supplement containing a complex of B’s is a good way to replenish these vitamins in the body.

Hanna’s Herb Shop carries these combination B Vitamins:

Anti-Fatigue- Hanna Kroeger’s B Vitamin combination with licorice root to support the adrenals and make it more bioavailable.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is the single most popular vitamin supplement in the country. It gives skin its elasticity by repairing and regenerating collagen. It fights free radicals, strengthens blood vessels, helps wound healing and improves iron absorption. Supporting the immune system, vitamin C helps the body recover from viral and bacterial infections. There are two forms of vitamin C:

1) Ascorbic Acid is the most widely available form of Vitamin C. It is generally the least expensive form, and it is available in powder, chewables, and capsules:

Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) Bulk– is a convenient and affordable bulk form that easily mixes into liquid or food. Buy by the ounce.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)– a capsule form with added bioflavonoids for extra antioxidant protection.

Vitamin C, Lovites, Chewable (ascorbic acid) – an easy to take chewable form.

2) Ester-C (ascorbate) is a buffered form of Vitamin C that is gentler on the stomach than Ascorbic Acid. Ester-C may help lower inflammation and support the adrenal glands. It may also be beneficial to cleansing toxins from the liver:

Vitamin C, Esterified (ascorbate minerals) – a tablet form with added ginger to soothe the stomach.

Vitamin C, Ester-C (calcium ascorbate) – a popular product at Hanna’s. Its unique manufacturing process neutralizes pH and is absorbed quickly into the system. Contains citrus bioflavonoids for added antioxidant protection.

Vitamin C Complex (calcium ascorbate) – combines both forms of C in a convenient powder form. It is formulated with buffered calcium ascorbate, bioflavonoids, Acerola, Rose Hips and Rutin.

Vitamin D

Most people don’t get sufficient sun exposure to manufacture enough vitamin D.

Vitamin D is essential for the formation of strong bones and the absorption of calcium. It also supports the reproductive and immune systems, reduces inflammation, strengthens glands, and is used to treat osteoporosis. While the body uses sunlight to make vitamin D, it cannot make enough if you spend too little time in the sun or wear sunscreen. There are 2 different forms of Vitamin D. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is made by the body and is found in some foods. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is a synthetic form often added to milk products and is in many supplements. We love the natural form!

Hanna’s Herb Shop carries 6 different Vitamin D3 supplements. A few of our favorites are:

Vitamin D3 5000 IU, Liquid– a convenient liquid form of D3 in a base of sunflower oil and natural orange flavor.

Vitamin D3 5000IU– an easy to take sublingual form that is immediately absorbed into the body.

Vitamin D3- 10,000 IU– our most potent Vitamin D supplement in a safflower oil base softgel.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that fights damaging free radicals. It is actually a family of compounds called tocopherols that work towards strengthening the central nervous system and improving immunity. It has blood thinning effects and promotes blood circulation. Vitamin E is widely used in treating some forms of cancer and slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. In a supplement form it is important to choose the natural form of mixed tocopherols, labeled d-(alpha, delta, or gamma) tocopherol. The most common form used in supplements however is the synthetic form called dl-alpha tocoperol. There is evidence that the natural forms are more effective.

Hanna’s Herb Shop carries this Vitamin E supplement:

Vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol acetate) – 100% pure and natural vitamin E in a softgel form.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is the blood clotting vitamin. There are 3 forms if Vitamin K: K1 (phylloquinone) is found in plants. Dark leafy greens like kale and turnip greens are excellent sources of K1.

K2 (menaquinone) is manufactured by bacteria in the intestines. Long term use of antibiotics can cause a vitamin K deficiency by killing these bacteria. Some digestive disorders such as chronic diarrhea, colitis, or Crohn’s disease can cause deficiency in vitamin K

K3 (menadione) is a synthetic form of vitamin K.

Hanna’s Herb Shop carries 2 Vitamin K supplements:

Vitamin K-1– an important supplement for blood clotting. In tablet form.

Vitamin K-2 100mcg (MK7) – supports normal blood clotting and the formation of prothrombin. A sublingual supplement that goes to work fast!

Physical problems, including infection or scarring of the reproductive organs are sometimes the cause of infertility. Uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts or endometriosis can also be a factor. These problems can be detected by modern medical tests and are often correctable. Structural issues such as a tilted or prolapsed uterus should also be considered. Low sperm count or low sperm mobility can be tested for. Any disease or infection needs to be addressed and cleared up before strengthening and balancing can be achieved.

Mental and Emotional issues definitely take their toll on fertility health. Depression, fatigue, stress and tension all hinder normal processes of the body and block energy.

Poor health in the body can greatly contribute to infertility. Improper circulation and a lack of energy flow through the reproductive organs will weaken fertility in women and men. This is often due to imbalances in hormones caused by improper diet and lifestyle. Regaining the health of the reproductive system is often the key to resolving fertility issues. Achieving health of the body as a whole will only help to increase fertility health. The natural approach is to nourish the body first. This helps to boost vitality and well being and helps the reproductive system work optimally. Hormone-balancing remedies can be an added benefit if needed.

Chinese medicine teaches that all aspects of good health, including fertility are dependent on a balance of yin and yang energy. Yin supplies body fluids- blood, phlegm, and semen. Our bodies are made up of water! Without enough moisture there can be endocrine imbalances, blood deficiency, and excess acid conditions which can all lead to infertility. Yang supplies energy to fuel metabolism. If you lack yang energy, then body systems do not function optimally. The result is fatigue and low endocrine function. Eggs can be weak, and menstruation may become irregular or stop altogether. Both yin and yang are necessary to support life. They provide healthy hormones, sperm, eggs, and the drive and energy to create and sustain a pregnancy.

Maintaining a healthy and regular menstrual cycle is important for women, especially those trying to become pregnant. A regular cycle allows for determining and charting the time of the month when ovulation happens thus determining when conception will most likely happen. Some health issues prevent a regular period. Endometriosis or hormonal imbalances can adversely affect the menstrual cycle. Stress and dietary deficiencies (including low body weight) can cause the menstrual cycle to become irregular or to stop altogether. Again, determining any imbalances or issues is the first step.

Good nutrition is very important. Iron deficiencies could cause lack of ovulation or poor egg health. Animal sources of food provide excellent sources of iron. Vegetable sources include blackstrap molasses, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, beans, nettles, amaranth, dark leafy greens, apricots, seaweed, and quinoa. Vitamin C improves hormone levels and increases fertility in women. The body requires food sources of vitamin C for proper iron absorption, so it is important to combine the 2 nutrients. Great food sources of vitamin C are red bell peppers, oranges, strawberries and hibiscus flower tea. Green vegetables are rich in B vitamins which are necessary for proper hormonal balance. Swiss chard, kale, watercress, seaweed, spirulina, collard greens, and nettles are all great choices! Cholesterol is also necessary for hormone production. Including some good animal fats in your diet is helpful. Zinc is found to keep hormone levels stable throughout the entire menstrual cycle. Zinc helps to produce mature eggs that are ripe for fertilization. Good sources of zinc are oysters, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds.

Other natural remedies for reversing infertility or enhancing fertility in general are readily available! Long before fertility drugs, ovulation tests, sperm analysis, or assisted reproduction techniques women and men have relied on traditional plant remedies. Herbs are very helpful when infertility is due to endocrine imbalances or when the body needs strengthening and supporting. Herbs can help heal and balance the reproductive organs and hormonal levels in both men and women. Improving overall health, restoring vitality, and balancing hormone levels all work towards boosting reproductive health. In addition to herbs, a complete fertility protocol would emphasize good nutrition, exercise, and stress management. When the body is healthy, conditions are more favorable to conceive. Below is a list of herbs that can benefit and support reproductive health:

Alfalfa is very nutritious. It is high in vitamins and minerals and contains some phytoestrogens that can help your body make the best use of its own natural estrogen. It may also help with vaginal dryness.

In Ayurveda, Shatavari is prized as the ‘Queen of Herbs’! It is the herb most recommended for all aspects of female health, though it is also excellent for men. Shatavari tones and nourishes the female reproductive organs, optimizing fertility. It increases cervical mucus which aids in the transport of sperm to egg. Rich in phytoestrogens, it helps to restore hormone balance and regulate the menstrual cycle. This is very important when trying to conceive. Its many actions help prepare a body for pregnancy and also supports healthy libido in men and women. Shatavari benefits male reproductive health by increasing sperm count, helping with impotence and easing inflammation of the sexual organs.

Mayan Uterine Massage can be very helpful when the uterus is prolapsed or tilted. It is a gentle, non-invasive massage that guides the uterus into its normal position. Due to a variety of reasons, the ligaments and muscles around the pelvis can weaken and loosen, causing the uterus to fall downward, forward, backward or to either side. This can cause uncomfortable symptoms and may hinder fertility by restricting blood and energy flow. By re-positioning the uterus, physical and emotional congestion is released from the abdomen allowing chi and blood to flow where they are supposed to! Men may benefit from this massage technique as well. By increasing circulation to the prostate, swelling can be alleviated as well as the need to urinate frequently. Some impotency issues may also be resolved! There is a lot more information to learn about this amazing technique! To read more and find a practitioner visit this site: https://arvigotherapy.com/practitioners

Meditation is very effective for stress management. Acupuncture can also be a very supportive tool. It is effective for removing stagnation & energy blockage, and may even help to build blood to nourish the uterus. It can also help to ease stress and regulate many functions in the body. This site may be helpful for more information: http://americanpregnancy.org/infertility/acupuncture/

Supporting the body’s natural processes, achieving balance, becoming happy and reducing stress all work towards the ability to create & sustain life!

As summer comes to an end our suppliers are getting busy with harvesting many of the wonderful herbs they grow for our combinations. The end of summer and beginning of fall is a time of abundance, when the bounty of the gardens is at their highest. It’s time to reap and enjoy what has been labored over all season!

But not all plants should be harvested at the same time. When to harvest depends on the particular plant and what portion of the plant is being used. Flowers, leaves, seeds, roots, bark and fruit all ripen or mature at different times for different plants. Follow these guidelines to ensure that you obtain the most medicinally potent herbs from your gardens and in the wild.

The best time to harvest herbs is in the morning as the essential oils in the plants are at their highest concentration. Harvest plants before the sun gets too hot but after it has had time to dry the dew on the leaves.

You can pick leaves and aerial parts throughout the growing season as they mature, although many leaves are best just before the flowers bloom. The leaves are most potent then, before the plant moves its energy to creating flowers. Stop making large harvests of perennial herbs in late summer or fall. This will allow time for new growth to harden and gather carbohydrates in preparation for winter.

Flowers should be gathered by hand just when they are opening.

Goji is a berry and should be harvested mid summer through early fall.

Berries and other fruits are usually picked in mid to late summer or early fall depending on when they ripen.

Roots should be dug as soon as the leaves of the plant have begun to die down, usually in late fall. Sometimes roots are harvested the following spring to allow the plant to produce seed and propagate in that first season.

Seeds are often harvested in early and late fall depending on when they ripen. Collect them when the seed heads are turning brown and before the seeds fall out.

Barks of trees are generally taken in spring to early summer or late fall after the leaves have dropped. New bark forms in spring and is easy to separate from the tree. Likewise, branches are easy to take from the tree in late fall when the tree’s energy moves to the truck and roots while it ‘shuts things down’ for winter. Always remove branches from the tree as opposed to stripping bark from the tree itself and leaving a bare spot.

Here’s a list of some favorite plants used in our herbal combinations and when their ideal harvesting time is. Many of these are also available in bulk form from Hanna’s Herb Shop.

Lavender flowers are harvested during the summer months.

Yarrow leaves and flowers are gathered in mid to late summer when the plant is in full flower.

Calendula and Red Clover flowers are best when hand-picked right when the bloom opens and before the plant has gone to seed.

Cayenne peppers are picked in late summer or even early fall when the fruits are bright red and full.

Wormwood, peppermint, oregano, thyme and basil leaves are cut at any time during the growing season. They are most flavorful though, just before the flowers bloom. Taking 25% or less of the plant will allow it to grow further for additional harvests during the same season.

Harvest young Nettle leaves in mid to late spring before the plant flowers. It is not recommended to consume the leaves after the plant has flowered because they develop a compound that may irritate the kidneys.

Milk Thistle seeds should be harvested when they are a deep brown color. Light brown seeds are not medicinally potent.

Dandelion root is excellent for the liver.

Dandelion roots are at their best in early spring or late fall. The whole plant may be picked throughout the season.

Black Walnut trees mature from September to October. Pick the hulls from the tree when green to ensure maximum potency.

For Wild Cherry Bark or White Willow Bark cut small, young branches from the tree and strip the bark (including the inner bark) from those branches. Take new branches in the spring or late fall.

Following the seasons for harvesting herbs maintains the integrity of the plant and allows for the most potent herbs. It also respects the plant and protects it for next year’s harvest. Happy Harvesting!

We are all aware of the benefits of eating healthy foods. Fruits and vegetables contain many health supporting nutrients including vitamins, minerals, enzymes, fiber, etc., so including more fresh fruits and vegetables in our diet can only be a good thing, right? Not when modern conventional farming uses many toxic chemicals on produce and buying only organic is too hard on the pocketbook. That’s where the dirty dozen and the clean 15 come in to help.

We are sharing with you the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) 2016 dirty dozen and clean 15 lists of the cleanest and dirtiest produce in terms of pesticide use. The EWG puts out this shopper’s guide to pesticides in produce every year. Its analysis is based on results of more than 35,000 samples tested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. With this guide we can make educated choices on the healthiest yet most cost effective produce. This makes it easier to include as many healthy fruits and veggies possible in our diets.

They look delicious, but not if they’re laden with pesticides. Strawberries are the #1 most contaminated produce this year. Make sure to get Organic, it’s worth it!

The 2016 dirty dozen list for conventionally grown produce:

Strawberries

Apples

Nectarines

Peaches

Celery

Grapes

Cherries

Spinach

Tomatoes

Sweet bell peppers

Cherry Tomatoes

Cucumbers

The Dirty Dozen lists the fruits and vegetables that have been contaminated by multiple pesticides and which have high concentrations of pesticides. Strawberries topped the list this year beating out apples which held that top spot for the last five years. More than 98% of strawberries, peaches, nectarines and apples tested positive for at least one pesticide residue. It’s important to note that even after being washed or sometimes even peeled, much of the residue levels still remained in the produce. The EWG also found that non-organic hot peppers and kale contained trace levels of particularly toxic pesticides. These didn’t make the list for containing the most pesticides but were important to mention due to the particularly dangerous toxins found in them.

These fruits and vegetables are a very beneficial part of our diets, however! Buy these organic whenever possible from your grocery store or local farmer’s market or grow your own!

The fact is that people, who eat organic, eat fewer pesticides. But organic produce is not readily available in some stores and when it is, it is going to cost more. The good news is there is a Clean 15 list of conventionally grown produce that tested low for pesticide residue. These are considered safer options for purchasing when organic items are not available or too expensive.

Asparagus is often an expensive produce so being on the Clean 15 list can really make it more affordable. Packed with nutrients and a wide variety of antioxidants, asparagus is an important vegetable to include on your grocery list.

The 2016 clean 15 list for conventionally grown produce:

Avocados

Sweet Corn

Pineapples

Cabbage

Sweet Peas

Onions

Asparagus

Mango

Papayas

Kiwi

Eggplant

Honeydew Melon

Grapefruit

Cantaloupe

Cauliflower

Avocados topped the clean list for this year with less than 1% of samples showing any detectable pesticides. No single fruit sample from the clean 15 tested positive for more than 4 types of pesticides and very few (5.5%) for more than one. It is recommended that folks opt for organic sweet corn and papayas, though, because they are common GMO crops.

Pesticides can over-tax the body causing trouble with gut health and poor immunity. Studies have found that children exposed to high levels of pesticides were at greater risk of impaired intelligence and ADHD. Other conditions linked to pesticide exposure are birth defects, Parkinson’s disease, leaky gut syndrome and certain types of cancer.

These lists should educate and empower you! Eating a variety of fruits and veggies, and lots of them, is very important. Now we have the knowledge to make the best choices for our families.
