Topics of the Woman’s Days at Zoutpan Struishuis Guest Farm

Usually we have a topic to explore.  The participants have lots of opportunities to laugh together and share their thoughts on the relevant topics, such as affirming each other.  The group are being guided through carefully selected topics and activities.  All of this happens in a safe and caring environment with a good measure of fun, laughter and reflection.

At a last gathering, we were all reminded by our friends of our value by being decorated by words describing our attributes.  It was good fun to be labelled – physically, this time in a positive way.

Other activities included creative expression through different mediums.  We painted a picture under the spell of beautiful music; we lost our self and our perfectionism and found the artist within.  We learned to let go of our perfect picture, by passing it on to our next friend to finish.  A great lesson in letting go as well as trusting that together we can create so much more!

Kattevigs in Mosselbaai – hoe raak dit my

Aangesien Kattevigs al hoe meer in die Mosselbaai area gediagnoseer word, is dit nodig om te weet van Katte Vigs. Die Oorsaak van Katte Vigs FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) word veroorsaak deur ‘n retrovirus wat die kat se immuunstelsel aanval en lei tot FAIDS (Feline Aquired Immune Deficiency syndrome). Dit onderdruk dus die kat se vermoë om infeksies te beveg en die verswakte immuunstelsel lei dan daartoe dat die kat baie meer vatbaar is vir virale, fungale, protosoale en bakteriaele infeksies.

Dit is nie oordraagbaar aan mense nie en menslike HIV is nie oordraagbaar aan katte nie.   FIV is die eerste keer teëgekom in Kalifornie in die vroeë tagtigs in ‘n katkolonie wat inflammasie van die mondslymvliese, neusuitskeidings en diarree gehad het en die onvermoë om geringe infeksies te baklei getoon het. Na vele navorsing is dit eindelik in 1986 geidentifiseer as FIV, maar daar is genoeg bewyse om te glo dat dit al baie eeue bestaan. Die FIV virus is teenwoordig in die speeksel van besmette katte en die hoofroete van oordrag is dan deur diep bytwonde vanaf besmette katte. Dit gebeur gedurende territoreale bakleiery of tydens paring wanneer die mannetjieskat die wyfiekat se nek byt.

Simptome van Kattevigs

Die siekte bestaan as drie fases:

Fase 1 = die akute fase : Wanneer die kat die eerste keer besmet word met die virus, mag hy/sy vir ‘n paar dae siekerig lyk, maar geen ander simptome wys nie. ‘n Ondersoek deur die veearts mag vergrote limfknope en ‘n effens verhoogde koors oplewer, maar geen ander tekens nie.

Fase 2 = die sub-kliniese stadium : Die kat mag geen simptome wys vir maande of selfs jare nie. Om die waarheid te se, ‘n kat met FIV kan vir dikwels ‘n normale lewe leef tot op ‘n hoë ouderdom. Hier is dit belangrik om te besef die siekte bly dormant, maar die kat dra die virus en kan dus ander katte daarmee besmet.

Fase 3 = chronies fase : Dit gebeur wanneer die virus “gereaktiveer” word en die kat dan simptome begin toon van immuunonderdrukking en herhaaldelike infeksies begin opdoen. Dit is ook dan op hierdie stadium wat die kat begin agteruitgaan en dit is onwaarskynlik dat die kat die aanslag van sekondere infeksies geassosieer met die chroniese siekte sal oorleef.

Voorkoming van Kattevigs

Die virus leef nie buite die liggaam nie, dus kan dit nie oorgedra word deur slaapplek of water- en kosbakke te deel of as katte mekaar sosiaal skoonlek nie. Vrylopende  gekastreerde mannetjieskatte dra die grootste risiko om FIV te kry aangesien hulle die meeste by territoreale bakleiery betrokke raak. Ooglopend is hierdie ‘n baie goeie rede om katte te steriliseer. In huishoudings waar verskeie katte saamleef, is dit ‘n goeie idee om katte te toets en enige nuwe aankomelinge te toets voordat hulle by die ander katte toegelaat word. Daar is ‘n FIV entstof beskikbaar vir katte was as hoe risiko beskou word.
