THE FINAL STOP OF THE NIXON WTA 2009

The Vans Triple Crown on the North Shore of Oahu will mark the end of Nixon's WTA (Winner-Takes-All) for 2009. After an exciting year of WTA events that spanned the globe and varied in challenges from Highest Heat score to Heaviest Wave, the WTA will conclude the year by awarding a custom watch valued at over $10,000 USD to the overall Vans Triple Crown winner.

This years Vans Triple Crown events roll out with the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa and will continue at the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach from November 24 - December 6. The last event in the three part series will culminate at the Billabong Pipeline Masters at Banzai Pipeline December 8 - 20, where the Nixon WTA Overall Triple Crown Winner will be announced.

This years 2009 Nixon WTA Overall Triple Crown Winner will take home a custom watch featuring a ceramic band, a three-hand Swiss made automatic movement adorned with four large baguette cut rubies and seven large baguette cut diamonds with Hawaiian flag at the 12:00 position and a custom engraved caseback commemorating the event.

More than 12,000 skaters competed in over 100 cities in more than 25 countries around the world in the éS game of SKATE Global Tour. It is that time of year again where we get to have some fun with a holiday celebrating time. Sunday, November 1st we will be celebrating Daylight Saving Time by turning our watches and clocks back one hour at 2AM.

Daylight saving time in most of the United States ends this at 2 a.m., local time, on Sunday, November 1. Contrary to popular belief, no federal rule mandates that U.S. states or territories observe daylight saving time. Most U.S. residents set their clocks one hour forward in spring and one hour back in fall. But people in Hawaii and most of Arizona - along with the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands - will do nothing. Those locales never deviate from standard time within their particular time zones.

TIAGO PIRES, WINNER OF THE NIXON WTA MUNDAKA

Tiago Pires (PRT) was officially declared the winner of Nixon's third WTA (Winner-Takes-All) of 2009 for Longest Tube during The Billabong Pro Mundaka. Though the contest was rife with less than desired swell conditions, Pires managed to secure himself 2.81 seconds on the clock of barrel time and walked away the winner of a custom Nixon watch valued at over $10,000.

The WTA Mundaka was open to all surfers from trials to finals during the eighth stop of the ASP World Tour, but it was Michel Bourez (PYF) and Kekoa Bacalso (HAW) who locked down tube times of 2.06 and 1.11 which put them in the running against Pires for the WTA title.

"After ten years on the Nixon team this feels like a great achievement," stated Pires. "I got a taste of what Mundaka has to offer and although I wanted to ride some bigger tubes, I'm stoked to have won this amazing watch."

Each WTA watch features a Swiss Made chronograph with day and custom color date, a titanium carbide coated case and band with rotating bezel and countdown timer, sapphire crystal, a custom-engraved caseback commemorating the event and custom set diamonds and rubies in the face.

Now in its third year, WTA Mundaka winners for Longest Tube have included Royden Bryson (2008) and Bobby Martinez (2007). The fourth and final stop of Nixon's 2009 WTA series will wrap up at the Triple Crown in Hawaii this coming December.

For the third installment of the four part, limited edition Fluro Rubber Player series, Nixon is set to launch a pink colorway on October 15 with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Boarding For Breast Cancer (B4BC).

Following up the recently released Orange Fluro (August) and Green Fluro (September) colorways, The Pink Fluro Rubber Player is the perfect match for the month of October.

Internationally recognized as the official month for Breast Cancer Awareness, October was the obvious choice for launching The Pink Fluro Rubber Player. As a longtime supporter of B4BC's mission it was a natural fit for Nixon to join forces with the organization and donate a portion of the sales of these watches to help support their cause.

The Fluro Rubber Player series is a four-month, four color limited edition watch program from Nixon. Beginning on the 15th of each month from August through November, a new secret Fluro Rubber Player colorway will be released. Due to the limited nature of The Fluro Rubber Player, once they are sold out, these watches will not be available again.

Surfrider Foundation 25th Anniversary Gala

Do you like clean oceans and beaches? If so, join in the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Surfrider Foundation. The event will take place this Friday, Oct 9th , at the California Science Center in downtown Los Angeles and will be hosted by Blink 182's Mark Hoppus.

The celebration will include a live auction featuring 25 artistic interpretations of the world's most famous surf breaks, created by some of the biggest names in the modern art world, including Shepard Fairey, Thomas Campbell, Raymond Pettibon, Andy Davis and Barry McGee to name just a few.

In addition to the live auction, they will also take time to recognize members of the bands Incubus and Pearl Jam, as well as actor David Chokachi, with the Keeper of the Coast Award for their countless hours of support and for using their influence to help Surfrider further their mission.

The evening will close out with a performance by CAMP FREDDY, featuring members from Jane's Addiction, The Cult and Guns n' Roses. That alone should make the night worth attending!

THE THIRD STOP OF THE NIXON WTA IS HEADED FOR MUNDAKA, SPAIN OCTOBER 5-17, 2009

The countdown for the third stop of the Nixon WTA (Winner-Takes-All) is now underway and will take place during the Billabong Pro in Mundaka, Spain. From trials to finals surfers will compete for the Longest Tube at this picturesque beach in hopes of winning a custom Nixon 51-30 watch valued at over $10,000.

"We're back at the birthplace of the Nixon WTA and we're looking forward to this years event," stated Nixon's Director of European Marketing, Henning Erlandsen. "The level of competition that goes on between all of the surfers for this watch is all in good fun, but when it comes down to it, everyone seems to be quite serious about winning it. It's anyone's game from trials to finals!"

Paul Rodriguez, Danny Way and Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins all took home the gold at the X Games 15 this past weekend. With a perfectly executed switch kick flip and switch heel, Paul took the gold medal for the skateboard street competition on Saturday.

Danny Way took home the gold in the Big Air Rail Jam with his switch 50-50 while competing on an injured knee and ankle. Amazing.

And of course, Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins took the home the gold in the Women’s Skateboard Vert Competition.

DANE REYNOLDS WINS THE SECOND STOP OF THE NIXON WTA AT JEFFREY’S BAY

Congratulations to Dane Reynolds who won the second stop of the Nixon WTA in Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa during The Billabong Pro. Reynolds secured the honors, and a custom Nixon 51-30 watch valued at over $10,000, after earning the highest heat score during the weeklong event, which took place July 9-15.

Even with the trying conditions and howling offshore winds, Reynolds was able to solidify his win with a total heat score of 19.20, which included a perfect 10 score combined with a 9.20. It was Reynolds display of a shocking air reverse combined with a few solid barrels that earned him the WTA win. Narrowly missing the win, was 9x World Champion Kelly Slater and Sean Holmes with total heat scores of 18.84 and 18.60, respectively.

"I'm glad that the Nixon WTA is a part of these select events around the globe," stated Nixon Marketing Manager, Mike Murciano. "The WTA has played a key role in highlighting special moments like Dane's heat and memorable waves at this year's J-Bay contest."

DUSTY PAYNE VOTED ONTO NIXON SURF TEAM

Nixon is pleased to announce Dusty Payne as the newest addition to the Nixon Surf Team. Keeping in true Nixon tradition, new riders are only added after a majority vote by the current Nixon Surf Team; a policy that has existed for all of the brands 11 year history.

Hailing from Lahaina, HI, and currently rated 10 in the World Qualifying Series (WQS), Payne is the youngest member of Nixon's Surf Team and was the first rider added to the team in over two years. In addition to his many recent accomplishments, including runner up at the 2008 Triple Crown of Surfing, winning the Kustom Air Challenge and the Oakley Junior Pro, Payne has been an integral part of the Nixon family for the past two years at the pro team level.

States Nixon Marketing Manager, Mike Murciano, "Dusty is a strong believer in the Nixon motto of ‘team designed, custom built'. He continues to infuse his sense of style into Nixon products and has shown his commitment and love for the brand over and over again. Milo Ventimiglia launches his new comic book series Berserker

Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announces the release of Berserker #1, a comic book published in conjunction with Milo Ventimiglia's production company, DiVide Pictures.

The brutal new series, which debuted Wednesday June 24, offers a blend of Norse mythology with contemporary characters. The story focuses on an American war veteran and a high school athlete coming to grip with the animalistic and uncontrollable rage living inside them.

"Berserker is a feel good kill. This is the book I wish I read as a kid," explains Venitmiglia.

"We are incredibly excited by the way Berserker has come together. On every level, from the concept to Rick's writing to Jeremy's art to Dave McCaig's colors to the involvement from Milo and Russ at DiVide, this book is firing on all cylinders," added Filip Sablik, Top Cow Publisher.

Mos Def has announced the release of his highly-anticipated new album, The Ecstatic, available now on Downtown Records.

Tony Hawk skateboards at The White House

Tony Hawk took a brief ride at the White House as part of a Father's Day celebration. Hawk skated in the grand foyer and the nearby Old Executive Office Building, with the permission of White House officials, and posted photos to his website and Twitter page. This photo shows Hawk on his skateboard with his hands in the air in what appears to be a hallway.

"...and here is my exit," he wrote in a message on Twitter, which linked to this picture of him skating. "Supposed to return at noon for the First Fathers event if they let me back in." Hawk posted other insights from his Washington visit on his Twitter page, telling fans about eating Frosted Flakes cereal inside the gates of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. In another tweet, he says "back at White House, Tweeting live from the Diplomatic Room. Unbelievable."

Tony joined other dads, athletes and celebrities at a Father's Day forum hosted by President Obama. Celebrity chef Bobby Flay helped man the barbecue grills for a White House picnic for the attendees, which included NBA players Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat and Etan Thomas of the Washington Wizards. "The Prez addressing all of us fathers before we split up to visit DC charities," Hawk tweeted. "D Wade & Etan T make me feel short."

Paul Rodriguez to star in Street Dreams

Paul Rodriguez stars in the feature film Street Dreams, in theaters now. Street Dreams tells the story of Derrick Cabrera who, like all skateboarders, dreams of being sponsored one day. He has all the talent in the world to make it happen but some major roadblocks to overcome before he can make the dream a reality. He is receiving pressure from all sides, his parents are stressing him because he is failing in school, his girlfriend thinks he is a loser, his best friend has become his rival because he is better than him. Things come to a head after Derrick gets arrested and a fight ensues with his father resulting in him running away from home. He does the only thing he knows how to do and opts to follow his dream to the Tampa Am contest, one of the only ways an unknown skater can get noticed.

Bobby Martinez (USA) won the first stop of the 2009 Nixon WTA (Winner-Takes-All) at the Billabong Pro last week in Teahupoo, Tahiti. Martinez, currently ranked 7 in the WCT/ ASP ratings, beat out Josh Kerr (AUS), Dean Morrison (AUS) and Miky Picon (FRA) for taking off on the heaviest wave of the event. Wave conditions varied from small to medium throughout the week with Teahupoo resisting to show her true strength. None-the-less, in the final, Martinez was able to snag the heaviest barrel of the event solidifying both his overall win at the Billabong Pro as well as the award for Nixon's WTA "Heaviest Wave" title and a custom watch valued at over $10,000 USD.

"The WTA is a great way to recognize achievements during specific WCT events that might have otherwise gone unrecognized or not awarded", stated Nixon's Marketing Manager, Mike Murciano. "It's even better when the winner of the overall event is also the winner of the WTA! I was stoked to see Bobby win both. Despite the mediocre Teahupoo conditions, it was a solid wave."

Now in its third year, the Nixon WTA is a winner-takes-all event which awards custom, limited edition Nixon timepieces at four stops along the ASP World Tour. The first WTA will be awarded for heaviest wave in Teahupoo, Tahiti. The subsequent three WTA challenges include: highest heat score at Jeffrey's Bay, South Africa, in July; the longest tube in Mundaka, Euskadi, in October; and the overall Triple Crown winner on the North Shore of Oahu in December.

Each WTA watch will feature a Swiss Made chronograph with day and custom color date, a titanium carbide coated case and band with rotating bezel and countdown timer, sapphire crystal, a custom-engraved caseback and custom set diamonds and rubies.

These four one-of-a-kind watches are valued at over $10,000 USD.

Nixon Marketing Manager, Mike Murciano, adds, "The goal of the WTA is to recognize achievements during the four events which are not focused on points or overall standings. The WTA promotes the idea of observing a standout performance and awards the world's top pro's something unique from Nixon for a truly memorable moment."

Silversun Pickups to release Swoon, their sophomore album

Swoon, the sophomore LP from Silversun Pickups, will be released April 14 on Dangerbird Records. The L.A. quartet has emerged from the depths of recording studios and is ready to flaunt their new material.

“I’m really proud of Swoon,” singer/guitarist Brian Aubert says. “I felt that we started this thing with a complete blank slate just kind of staring at a big mountain, not knowing where this was going to go. Everyone worked so insanely hard and I feel like you hear that we were in there every day trying to make the best songs that we could.”

A pair of these new songs will be unveiled just prior to the album’s release as part of an exclusive Silversun Pickups Track Pack for the top-selling video game Guitar Hero® World Tour. In April, players will be able to take the SSPU challenge with three downloadable tracks: two new songs, “Panic Switch” and “Nice to Know You Work Alone,” or “Well Thought Out Twinkles” from their breakthrough, Carnavas.

With only a short month off following an exhaustive two-plus year tour schedule behind their debut, SSPU locked themselves in a rehearsal room to begin work on their follow up. Aubert points out this scheduled seclusion was a different approach for the band: “During Carnavas we were in and out of the studio often because we were touring behind our EP Pikul. We had to stop and start and stop and start, which was a little frustrating and crazy. This is the first time we’ve ever actually written anything straight through, then gone into a studio.”

With the help of the Carnavas producer and mixer team of Dave Cooley and Tony Hoffer, Silversun Pickups churned out an album that Aubert says, “sounds like a nervous breakdown.” The songs are taut, embellished in places with string arrangements that appear like a drizzle of mercury over the SSPU's trademark distorted density. The band's music acts as a shadow to Aubert’s lyrics being pulled on a chain by his every vocal whim. His words narrate personal traumas, as though they could be commentary on headlines of any day’s newspaper. As a whole, Swoon is a tapestry of beauty and aggression.

In honor of this release, Gibson/Epiphone will create limited edition guitars with custom SSPU artwork, to be displayed at indie retailers across the country, timed with the annual Record Store Day on April 18. Borris Vallejo + Nixon

Nixon and legendary Sci Fi artist, Boris Vallejo, have linked up to create a limited collection of men’s watches, wallets, accessories and softgoods aptly titled, The Fantasy Collection.

Two hyper colored, super future art pieces created by Vallejo were applied to products ranging from Nixon’s 51-30 to t-shirt graphics, belt buckles and more.

Vallejo is best known for his paintings that illustrate fantasy and erotic genres and have been used in everything from books to movie posters including the films Tarzan, Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Conan The Barbarian. Vallejo’s frequent theme and use of fantasy has garnered him a loyal, worldwide cult following. With a bit of mystique, Vallejo notes that when it comes to creating his art, “We search for ideas, we open our minds and let the ideas come to us and then we grab them! Although we start with a concept, the final result is often a surprise, even to us.”

The Malloy brothers have been heading over to Ireland for several years to charge some of the largest cold water waves in the world. They will be featured in the Irish surf documentary “Waveriders” where they're doing just that. The film will debut in Europe on April 3rd, but should be making it’s way over to North America relatively soon so keep your eyes out for it.

A little about the film: After winning the audience award at the Dublin Film Festival '08 and the inaugural George Morrison Feature Documentary Award at the Irish Film and Television Awards '09, the film has gone on to win Best Feature Documentary at the Beloit Film Festival in Illinois, USA (22 Feb 2009) and Best Sports Documentary at the Celtic Film Festival (25 March 2009 . 'Waveriders' has been selected for the upcoming Newport Beach Film Festival at the end of April in California and also for the Riverrun Film Festival in North Carolina. Further film festivals throughout Europe and USA will be announced in the coming weeks.

DYLAN GRAVES CROWNED NIXON’S 2009 HIGH TIDE HOLD’EM WINNER

Dylan Graves won the title of overall winner at the 2009 Nixon High Tide Hold’Em which took place in Tavarua, Fiji February 12-21.

Now in its third year, The High Tide Hold’Em is an all island challenge ranging from poker to spearfishing, surfing and karaoke to fishing and ping pong- all in the name of fun. Attendees for this years High Tide Hold’Em came from the world of surf, skate and snow, and included: Andy Irons, Tony Hawk, Travis Rice, Danny Way, Dusty Payne, Claire Bevilacqua, Hana Beaman, Cheyne Magnusson, Lyn-Z Adams, Mark Cunningham and Mike Escamilla.

Graves had a strong showing across the board with wins in both surf events, including an entertaining showing at Kiddieland with Triple Crown runner-up, Dusty Payne, in a pirate themed kayak. Snowboarder extraordinaire Travis Rice took to the mic and showed he had what it took to be crowned the islands first official karaoke champion but only after narrowly nudging out Payne for the final win in this category. In the end, who would win the weeks overall High Tide Hold’Em title came down to a final bout of pong between Graves and T.Rice, which extended into three game point duce’s before Graves was able to walk away victorious. Said Graves about his win, “ I can’t even express how psyched I was to be a part of the whole crew that was in Fiji this year. I’m so stoked to have been a part of this event at one of my favorite places on earth.”

Kevin Pearce took the Silver medal at X-Games 13 in the Superpipe event. Regardless of snowy conditions and a sore eye where he had gotten 3 stitches the day prior due to a bad fall, he was able to pull it together and have one of the strongest runs of the event. Kevin’s had a busy few weeks where prior to X-Games he won the European Burton Open and received 3rd in the second stop of the Dew Tour. Way to go Kevin.

Nixon is pleased to announce Joel Parkinson as the winner of the fourth and final stop of the 2008 Nixon WTA, after winning the Vans Triple Crown.

Parkinson made a solid showing in this year’s three events, kicking off with a fifth place finish at both the Reef Hawaiian Pro as well as at the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing. He rounded out his performance with a ninth place finish at the Billabong Pipe Masters. Hailing from Australia’s Gold Coast, Parkinson has been a key player on tour all year with perhaps one of the most memorable achievements when he scored the first ever 20 out of 20 at Pipeline.

“It is great to award this very special watch to Joel. Not only does he represent the spirit and drive of today’s top surfers, he also has a serious sense of humor and will be showing off his new watch to all the boys,” stated Chad DiNenna, Nixon co-founder and Marketing Director.

20-year-old Davis’ style and amplitude top the competition in Breckenridge, CO

Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California (December 22, 2008) – Danny Davis takes first in Superpipe at the debut of the Winter Dew Tour over the weekend. Following a forced season off due to injury, Davis built his strength back over the summer and with this win proves that he’s back in winning form for this contest packed season.

“I’ve been riding for the summer and I was hurt last year so it’s just nice to come back and ride well and land a run,” says Davis. “The pipe was perfect, and the riding was unreal today, I am stoked.”

Davis cleanly linked together a series of tricks he’d never done together before in a contest. The fresh, winning run included a switch backside 720, a backside 900, a frontside 1080 into a cab 1080, to finish with a frontside 900. His score of 94.75, the best of the day, landed in front of Shaun White and Scotty Lago.

As the Michigan native moves on to the next Dew tour stop in Mount Snow, VT, he’ll be packing 100 points toward an overall win. Similar to the Dew Tour’s summer competition structure, the Winter Dew Tour is based on a cumulative points system as the top snow athletes battle it out for a piece of the $1.5 million prize purse and the chance to take home the Dew Cup at the conclusion of the season in February.

Along with competing in the next two Dew Tour stops, Davis is competing in the Winter X Games, Burton Open Series and Grand Prix events in preparation for the 2010 Olympic qualifiers. Between his ambitious contest schedule, Davis is looking forward to filming with the Burton team and riding some powder with his Frends.

Chris Malloy is a surfing archetype-the kind of globetrotting, wave-discovering swashbuckler that defined the sport before things like a "sponsorship" or a "Nine Time World Champion" existed. For the better part of 20 years, Malloy has spent more time traveling than he's spent at his home near Ventura, California. Now 36 and building a family, Malloy's cutting back a bit. "I've been doing this since I was about 18," he says. "I used to be in one place for, at the most, two months. Now I'm home a lot-at least six months out of the year."

Racking up more travel time in a year than most surfers do in a life, Malloy has found himself way off the beaten surf map. Ask him how many countries he's visited and he'll begin pointing to an imaginary map like a sixth grader taking a geography test. He knows 10 times as many countries as most sixth graders, but he still can't give you an accurate answer. What he can tell you, however, is a few pointers on how to make surf travel easier. For example: leave your bags at the airport.

"If you don't want to deal with your boards, just get in the car and leave," he says. "They think they got your boards too late, and it's their fault. They usually show up at your door the next day."

Also, never show fear: "When you get brought to secondary at customs, the first thing you should say to the guy is, 'Where's the dog? This is so cool!' And they instantly go, 'Get out of here.' Because no one who's carrying anything illegal would ever ask that kind question. If they think you're actually excited to be there, they'll just let you go."

See? When it comes to surf travel, no one's done more thangs than Chris Malloy. So listen up, because he's not usually around to dispense such advice. "The last eight years, we've been really looking for places no one wants to go. There's probably 15,000 good waves left that haven't been surfed."

TransWorld Snowboarding Reviews the Delta

The new issue of TransWorld Snowboarding features a review of the Delta SS/PU and here's what they had to say:

KEY FEATURES: Compass, altimer functions (tracks total and average vertical ridden), elevation, and slope and speed sensors (find your top and average speeds).

PROS: Chris says, "I was surprised at how easy it is to set the watch up and use all the features." Once on-hill, he found several good things to say about the watch: "The vertical tracking is fairly accurate- I tested it several times taking runs, and the average was close each time. The compass and elevation both checked out, too"

CONS: Chris says, "The speed feature of the watch wasn't very accurate. I tested the feature several times and felt like I was going much faster than the watch said." The speed feature works by setting the angle of the terrain, so we're thinking it might work best on slopes with a consistent angle.

VERDICT: If you're a numbers rider who's stoked on tracking your total vertical for every day of your vacation, you'll love how easy this watch is to use and how accurate it is. It never hurts to have a compass out on the mountain either- just in case. The speed function was a litte iffy, but overall Chris thought all the functions made for "a really cool watch."

2008 Nixon LTD Collection Launches

Dean Morrison's Ordeal at Sea

So what does a pro surfer get up to when he has an enforced 3 month lay-up following a hip operation? You grab a bunch of your craziest mates, buy a new boat, fill it up with fishing tackle and cases of beer, tow the whole act 2,000kms north and head out into the wild blue yonder. Dean Morrison's fishing vacation with Dean & Sean Harrington, Paul Fisher and another young madman was always a disaster waiting to happen, but little did any of them realize it would be over before the first day was out.

After failing to catch a solitary fish, Dingo put one of the Hazza's in charge of the outboard engine, while rest of the gang sipped on a couple cool ones as the sun was setting in the west. They were miles from land, there was not another vessel on the horizon, they were completely alone as nightfall approached. Hazza of course was skylarking, running the boat at full throttle. The boys all gripped their tinnies and piled down the tail-end of the boat to avoid the spray that was being whipped up by the boat as it bounced flat-chat across the sea.

For a real laugh, Hazza spontaneously down throttled to zero, the wake overtook the boat, flooded it, and it sank within 10 seconds. Suddenly, the boys were in the deep blue, still holding their beer cans, and before the realization that they were in a life threatening situation, Paul Fisher was diving for his SIM card. But alas, the phones had gone with the boat and the gear to Davey Jones' locker.

The boys swam 5 kilometres to an island, separating on the way and dragging themselves up on the beach in the pitch black. To their dismay, the casataways discovered that the only inhabitants of the island were big, venomous black snakes. The boys, dressed only in their boardshorts, huddled together for warmth. It was like Gilligan's Island, except there was no captain, no professor, just five Gilligans. In the morning they walked around the island and when Dean accidentally kicked an 8 foot black snake, which reared up, they went screaming back into the water.

And that was the plan, just run screaming into the surf and start swimming for another island. What they did not know was that this stretch of water is infested with big crocs and big tiger sharks, as well as deadly box jelly fish and strong currents. They somehow avoided all these predators, however the current got them and once again they split up and swam across the current to another distant island.

On reaching this island they regrouped, estimating that it had been a 15 km swim. They were dehydrated and in full realization that they were lucky to be amongst the living. They found a couple swimming and raised the alarm. Soon the police and Volunteer Marine Reserve turned up. They called the boys the "Walking Ghosts", because they just should not have survived. They soon learned that all swimming had been banned in the area due to an agressive 15' crocodile that had been terrorizing lately.

And that's how Deano Morrison wiled away the time as his hip rehabbed. Oh yeah, he was the weak link - the hip was not up for a marathon swim leg and he lagged behind the group. It was a close call and he is looking forward to going back to more mundane activities, such as ping in at Pipe.

Dusty Payne wins Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge

Dusty Payne (Maui) barrels his way to victory in the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge to claim the world’s biggest ever pay-day for a pro junior event in Bali, Indonesia. Payne, 19, rode barrel after perfect barrel to beat French surfer Marc Lacomare (Hossegor) in an extended 45-minute man-on-man final. The innovative natural footer collected US $20,000 for his efforts!

ROYDEN BRYSON WINS THE THIRD STOP OF THE 2008 NIXON WTA IN MUNDAKA, SPAIN

This past weekend, South African surfer Royden Bryson claimed victory at the Nixon WTA in Mundaka, Euskadi, for getting the longest tube. The first South African to win a WTA title, Bryson snagged a 3.14 second barrel during heat 13 of round two. Despite the less than stellar conditions, there was a burst of activity during the second round with Jordy Smith and Fred Patacchia following closely behind Bryson with tubes at 3.12 and 3.09 seconds, respectively.

"Mundaka came through for us again this year with some small tubes which created some fierce competition," explains Nixon Europe's Director of Marketing, Henning Erlandsen. "After the burst of rides that made the leaderboard late in round two, we were stoked to see Royden come out on top."

Bryson joins the ranks of this year's WTA winners Ryan Hipwood (AUS) for riding the heaviest wave in May at Teahupoo and Taylor Knox (USA) for achieving the highest heat score at J-Bay. The WTA will reconvene on the North Shore of Oahu next month where the final prize for the year will be awarded to the overall Triple Crown winner.

NIXON WTA MOVES ON TO MUNDAKA SEPTEMBER 29

The third stop of the 2008 Nixon WTA will take place at the Billabong Pro in Mundaka, Euskadi, from September 29 through October 12. The WTA in Mundaka will be awarded to the surfer who clocks the longest tube from trials to finals.

"We are really excited to be back in Mundaka, the birth place of the Nixon WTA - Winner Takes All Competition," noted Nixon Europe's Brand Manager, Henning Erlandsen. "The competitive nature of the surfers has already kicked in- previous winners of the WTA are getting their mileage out of teasing their mates and our goal of sparking some fun competition between the Top 45 is evident on the tour."

Ryan Hipwood of Australia kicked off this year's WTA victories after taking home the prize this past May at Teahupoo for riding the heaviest wave. Taylor Knox followed suit in July at J-Bay for achieving the highest heat score in the first round of competition. After Mundaka, the WTA will head on to North Shore of Oahu in mid-November where the final prize for the year will be awarded to the overall Triple Crown winner.

Now in its second year, the Nixon WTA is a winner-take-all event, which awards a custom, limited edition Nixon timepiece at four different stops along the ASP World Tour. Each of the custom Nixon 51-30 tide watches feature a gunmetal finish, a custom-engraved WTA case back, and diamond baguette indices alternating with hand applied flags representing each of the four contest regions. These four one-of-a-kind timepieces are each valued at over $10,000 USD.

CASEY BROWN TAKES THE TOP SPOT AT THE 9TH ANNUAL NIXON SURF CHALLENGE PRESENTED BY VANS

Wrapping up this past Sunday, American surfer Casey Brown walked away victorious from this year's Nixon Surf Challenge. Losing the first day to poor conditions did nothing to hamper the competition or the high spirits of the surfers. Josh Kerr (AUS), Hira Terinatoofa (PYF), Eric Rebiere (FRA) and Casey Brown (USA) were the final four to hit the water. In the end it was Casey Brown who stood out from the pack and went home with the €5000 prize money, the largest amount given to the first place winner in the contest's nine-year history. Brown locked in his win by getting the best barrel of the event, following it with a massive front-side air.

"This is the ninth year that Donostia, San Sebastian has given us her best. We have been blessed with great weather, great waves and an insane final, so again, we want to say thank you to the people of San Sebastian for hosting our event, the local surfers for lending us the beach and we look forward to returning for the 10th Surf Challenge next year," said Nixon Europe's Director of Marketing, Henning Erlandsen.

Additionally, winner Brown added, "The waves were so fun, the food was amazing and I won €5000. I'm psyched. It was such a great event hanging with all the boys with no pressure. The Surf Challenge was just all about trying to get sick waves."

Casey Brown joins the ranks of previous Nixon Surf Challenge winners who include Tiago Pires (2007 and 2004), Dylan Graves (2006), Josh Kerr (2005), Micky Picon (2003), Fredo Robin (2002), Jonathan Gonzalez (2001) and Eric McHenry (2000).

THE GUMBALL 3000

The Gumball Rally 3000 kicks off this Saturday (August 9th) in San Francisco, and will feature a Nixon car (for the North American leg of the rally) driven by team riders Todd Richards and Mike Escamilla. This year's Gumball Rally will feature 150 celebrity and high profile entrants including everyone's favorite, David Hasselhoff in the legendary Knight Rider car, K.I.T.T.

After driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas, all participants will be flown to Pyongyang - in the first ever passenger flight from the US to North Korea. The following morning participants will be flown on to Hangzhou, China, where their cars will be waiting, and the rally then continues over three days via Shanghai and Xuzhou, to cross the finish line in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, during the Olympics on Saturday August 16th.

The event will be televised each day worldwide on MTV Networks and CNN.

For those who live in the San Diego area, make sure to head downtown to The Ivy hotel on Sunday, August 10 where the rally cars will be on display (see attachment for more details).

NIXON TEAM RIDERS SWEEP THE X-GAMES

Nixon team riders cleaned up this past weekend at X-Games 14 in Los Angeles, nabbing three gold medals , three silver medals and one bronze. Bob Burquist took gold in skateboard big air with Danny Way right behind him taking silver in what was the most exciting big air final ever. Ryan Sheckler edged out fellow Nixon rider Paul Rodriguez in street, taking gold and silver, respectively. In the women’s vert division Lyn-z Adams Hawkins took silver with Mimi Knoop taking bronze. Once again proving that he goes fast in anything with wheels, Travis Pastrana took the gold medal in rally car.

VICTORY FOR TAYLOR KNOX AT THE NIXON WTA J-BAY

This week, the second stop of the 2008 Nixon WTA wrapped in Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa. Taylor Knox claimed top honors, after scoring the highest heat score early in the competition, during heat seven of the first round. With a heat score of 19.70, one of the highest in J-Bay contest history, the tour veteran set the bar high and held his position through the end of the competition.

The Nixon WTA is a winner-take-all event, which awards a custom, limited edition Nixon timepiece at four different stops along the ASP World Tour. Each of the custom Nixon 51-30 tide watches feature a gunmetal finish, a custom-engraved WTA case back, and diamond baguette indices alternating with hand applied flags representing each of the four contest regions. These four one-of-a-kind timepieces are each valued at over $10,000 USD.

“I’m just happy to do it in a year that so many good surfers were there,” stated Taylor of his win at J-Bay.

Last year’s winner at J-Bay was Kelly Slater, who took the WTA title with a heat score of 19.23 during the quarterfinals.

With competition now complete in South Africa, the WTA will reconvene in Mundaka, Euskadi, in September where the award will go to the surfer who gets the longest tube ride. The last stop of the WTA will be held on the North Shore of Oahu this winter, and the final prize for the year will go to the overall Triple Crown winner.

MALOOF MONEY CUP WINNERS AWARDED EXCLUSIVE NIXON WATCHES VALUED AT $10,000 USD

The first annual Maloof Money Cup went down July 11-13 at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, CA, offering the largest purse of any professional skateboarding competition to date with over $450,000 in prize money up for grabs. In the spirit of breaking records, Nixon crafted two unique timepieces to present to the winners of street and vert to commemorate the inaugural event.
To compliment the record setting prize money, Nixon worked with event visionary Rob Dyrdek to produce a pair of extremely covetable timepieces each valued at over $10,000 USD. Each watch awarded is the 51-30 model featuring a custom 300 meter Swiss-made automatic movement with 23 karat gold plated stainless steel case, sapphire crystal and custom rounded bezel set with 76 white baguette diamonds equivalent to one and a quarter carats. These unique pieces are additionally highlighted with genuine white stingray bands and custom engraved casebacks.

“In keeping with the theme of ‘the best and biggest’ in the sport’s history, we were honored to have the opportunity to create something so unique for skateboarding’s top pros. The watches represent the best in materials, design and craftsmanship and are two of the most valuable watches to date that we’ve had the opportunity to create,” stated Nixon co-founder and Marketing Director Chad DiNenna.

With no expense spared on the street course and vert ramp created solely for the Maloof Money Cup, the biggest names in skateboarding were present to showcase their talents. When the dust settled it was Nixon’s own Paul Rodriguez taking top honors in street while Pierre-Luc Gagnon captured the watch and title in vert.

Andrew Reynolds Voted Onto the Nixon Pro Team

We are proud to announce the addition of Andrew Reynolds to the Nixon Pro Team.

Reynolds joins an elite team including Bob Burnquist, Tony Hawk, Rick McCrank, Colin McKay, Paul Rodriguez, Ryan Sheckler, and Danny Way. The first addition to the team in nearly two years, Reynolds sailed through Nixon’s team policy requiring a team vote for any new additions.

“Andrew is one of the most influential skaters of all time,” affirms Nixon’s Sports Marketing Manager, Brandon Lillard. “Putting him up for a team vote was a no-brainer. Needless to say it was a unanimous vote from everyone and I look forward to seeing what Andrew brings to the table.”

Born in Lakeland, Florida, Reynolds has been skating since the age of nine. Australian surfer Ryan Hipwood captured the first stop of the Second Annual Nixon WTA, which just wrapped in Tahiti. Nixon is pleased to announce Ryan took home the prize for riding the heaviest wave at Teahupoo during the first round trials of the Billabong Pro.

Ryan clenched the victory early in the game during the first round of trials when he dropped late into one of the few 8-foot set waves that surged at the usually heavy Tahitian reef break of Teahupoo.

“Teahupoo has definitely seen heavier waves but Ryan was lucky to be in the right place at the right time,” states Nixon’s Director of Marketing, Chad DiNenna. “With no hesitation, he pulled into what ended up being one of the biggest waves of this year’s event.”

For his efforts, Ryan was awarded a custom, limited edition Nixon 51-30 tide watch with a gunmetal finish and a custom-engraved WTA case back. The watch also features diamond baguette indices and the Tahitian flag at the 3 o’clock position to commemorate the event at Teahupoo. This one-of-a-kind timepiece is valued at over $10,000 USD.

The Nixon High Tide Hold’Em is an invitation-only event which pits some of action sports’ biggest names against each other in a series of friendly competitions ranging from poker to ping-pong, Guitar Hero to fishing and spear fishing along with two separate surf challenges. The format of The High Tide Hold’Em is friendly and informal and every event is peer-judged. The High Tide Hold’Em gives invitees the opportunity to showcase some of their talents in a variety of challenges that are not exclusive to surfing.

Maui's Cheyne Magnusson earned the overall winning title at this year’s event by consistently placing in the top three winner slots in three out of seven of the week’s events. Said Cheyne of his first time participating in the High Tide Hold'Em: "I am so psyched to have been a part of this year’s event. The main objective was to have fun and that took the pressure off! Being here was more like a vacation with your friends than a high-pressure contest." Cheyne walked away with an armful of prizes which included a Mac i-book, an Olympus waterproof digital camera, a custom Riffe spear-gun and an invitation to next year’s High Tide Hold’Em event.

The most competitive of the week’s events was the surf contest, which was won by Carlsbad's Ricky Whitlock. During his week in Tavarua, Ricky consistently charged the hardest and was the most enthusiastic in the water, earning him the respect and votes of fellow participants at the event. Nipping at his heels for the top surfing title was Hawaii's Casey Brown who nearly took the first place honors but missed out by only a handful of votes. Last year’s High Tide Hold'Em overall winner, Amion Goodwin, and Cheyne Magnusson tied for third place and rounded out the remaining slots for this competition. "Winning this one event was way better than winning any other surf contest I have been in,” explains an enthusiastic Ricky after having won the surf title. “I loved being a part of this trip!"

NIXON ANNOUNCES DATES OF SECOND ANNUAL HIGH TIDE HOLD’EM IN TAVARUA, FIJI

Nixon is once again taking over the island of Tavarua in Fiji this month for the second annual Nixon High Tide Hold’Em, with some of action sports’ biggest names in tow. The invitation-only event, taking place February 15-22, gives competitors the opportunity to showcase some of their lesser-known skills in a series of challenges that make good use of all the activities Tavarua has to offer.

Taking advantage of Tavarua’s setting and exclusive access to the world famous waves Cloudbreak and Restaurants, invitees will be put to the test in competitions in poker, ping pong, Guitar Hero, fishing, spear fishing and two separate surf challenges. From the results in these seven events, an overall High Tide Hold’Em champion will be crowned. The format is friendly and informal and every event is peer-judged. Despite the high energy on the island, the Hight Tide Hold’Em provides a solid reprieve from the taxing, high-stress professional contest circuit in addition to bringing athletes from different sports into the mix.

“After last year’s success at the inaugural event, we have been working like crazy with the staff on the island to make this year even better,” explains Nixon’s Sports Marketing Manager Brandon Lillard. “Then again, we will be on Tavarua, and if you can’t have fun there you probably can’t have fun anywhere. We have a few veterans from last year with a solid new crew, so I am excited to see how it all goes down.”

SurfAid International, a non-profit organization dedicated to the alleviation of human suffering through community-based health programs. With the support of the New Zealand and Australian governments, the global surfing community, and most importantly the Mentawai people of the affected areas themselves, SurfAid has come to exemplify the healing power of cross-cultural partnerships.

By fostering community participation SurfAid's goal is to empower people and provide community based health and development programs to control malaria, improve nutrition, and hygiene; and decrease the rate of deaths from respiratory infections and diarrhea. Ryan Sheckler Launches Fundraising Effort for Children’s Cancer Research Fund

Ryan Sheckler has partnered with Children’s Cancer Research Fund (CCRF) to raise money to help children with cancer. As part of the three month charity program, Sheckler is donating his personal Ranger Rover to the donor who raises the most funds for CCRF. Sheckler is launching the “Sheckler Family Foundation” in further support of philanthropies.

Children’s Cancer Research Fund is dedicated to providing national support for clinical research in pediatric cancer, while improving the medical environment for all children. A Healthier and Happier tomorrow is the mission and promise of CCRF to children and their parents everywhere.

The Range Rover will be presented by Ryan himself to the individual who raises the most money for CCRF at their annual 5k RUN/WALK on April 27, 2008. The winner will also receive two tickets to Los Angeles, accommodations and transportation to the event.

“Cancer has affected our family and so many of our loved ones. We want to help make a difference and raise funds to find a cure. Our goal is to raise at least $100,000.00 if not beyond. I am very excited to get this event going as it will be the first of many. The Sheckler family will soon be launching our own foundation “Sheckler Family Foundation.”

Durbidge’s victory in the final stop of the Nixon WTA has been a culmination of solid competition in all three Vans Triple Crown events on the North Shore of Oahu. He placed 2nd in the Reef Hawaiian Pro, 9th in the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing and the sealed his WTA win with his 1st place sweep in the Billabong Pipeline Masters.

Durbidge walks away with a one-of-a-kind Nixon 51-30 tide watch with Swiss automatic movement and custom-fitted with a white diamond baguette adorned bezel including two red rubies and a blue sapphire to represent the Hawaiian flag. Nixon is set to release the 2007 LTD Collection this November with a portion of the proceeds to benefit The Tony Hawk Foundation.

The LTD Collection is a group of limited edition watches made entirely of skateboards and snowboards from some of the sports best athletes including: Tony Hawk, Danny Way, Danny Davis, Romain DeMarchi and others.

Limited to 500 pieces worldwide, these one-of-a-kind, handcrafted watches are created through a labor intensive process which includes planing the boards top sheets down to .4mm. The plies, which include the boards graphics, are then individually die-cut and inlaid by hand into Nixon’s Rotolog and Chalet links. Case and link plating options include black, gunmetal, gold, antique silver, antique brass and blue metallic finishes and are topped off with custom engraved casebacks which bear the LTD logo, the athlete’s name, number in edition and the collection year.

Due to the nature of the process, each piece is unique, with no two watches alike. Distribution is limited to select skate and snowboard specialty shops and all watches will be available November 15, retailing between $399 and $499 USD.
