Yes, it's finally Summer! Whether you are planning on spending your summer camping at the lake, strolling down the beach or simply sipping on a frozen daiquiri -make sure to also make plans for your most faithful companion and friend, dog.

The summer weather can be harsh on dogs: overheating, dehydration and burned paws are but a short list of things that could happen.

Here is a list of tips for a happy summer dog!

Exercise your dog either early in the morning or late at night
Leave the A/C or Fan on during the day
Keep your dog hydrated
Always keep a bowl (or two) of fresh water available for him to drink
Use doggie boots
The booties will protect your dogs' paws from the hot pavement.
Cooling bandana
This is a product that will help cool your dog for hours. Simply soak the Bandana in cold water for 15 to 30 minutes and tie it around your dog's neck as you would do with a regular bandana.
Did someone say pool?
What a better way to fight the heat than hitting the pool! If you don't have a pool at home or if dogs are not allowed at the community pool you can always get a "kiddy pool". They are really inexpensive and are easy to manage; in sum hours and hours of cool fun!
Frozen treats
Keep a couple of frozen bananas or yogurt cubes in the freezer and give them to your dogs as refreshment. Click here for more frozen treat ideas
Do not shave his fur!
It actually helps them fight the nasty UV rays and prevent sunburns.
Never leave a dog in a car
This is a NO, NO all-year-round, especially during the summer, "On a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 100 and 120 degrees in just minutes, and on a 90-degree day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 160 degrees in less than 10 minutes".
Shade
Try to keep your dog inside as much as possible but if for any reason you have to take them out make sure you keep them out of direct sunlight or give them a shady place to get out of the sun.

Inspired by a post on mom.me (read here) I decided to write a post listing sites that offer daily deals for dog related products. As it turn out there aren't that many (or at least that's what Google wants me to believe) because I wanted to include about ten but only found five that look legit.

I must warn you, I have not personally bought from any of the sites I am listing on this post (I live in Puerto Rico and most of this sites will not ship to this little island on the Caribbean) but the products they carry are super cool and I had to somehow participate!

Since then I have listened to hours and hours of programming dedicated to dogs in general.

The dog who couldn't bark

In my community lives an old grumpy lady who screams her guts out every time a neighbor's dog barks.

I always thought she just hated dogs but sometime ago while I was walking in front of her house with my dogs I noticed there was a big dog tied-up in her front yard.

The dog seemed to be barking but only a low scratchy sound was audible; he was a dog who couldn't bark!

I almost cried. I had read before about a surgical procedure for debarking a dog (cordectomy) but I have never seen a debarked dog before.

On the way back home I couldn't help feeling sorry for the dog. After all, debarking does not eliminate the animal's ability to bark after the procedure is completed. It just "lowers the volume" of the bark.

In my opinion debarking a dog is just a way to mask symptoms. You might not hear it but if uncorrected the dog might still engage in barking excessively and this type of behavior will affect him both physically and mentally.

So...what options does a dog owner have to get a dog to stop barking without resorting to debark him?

The answer is simple: training but first he will need to identify what is causing the dog to bark.

Ask yourself: What is causing my dog to bark?

Is my dog’s bark a territorial or protective barking? Is he alarming me of something? Is there something frightening him? Is he bored? Is he feeling lonely?Is barking part of his greeting or play? Does he bark to get my attention?

After you have pinpointed the source of the barking will you be able to start working on modifying the unwanted behavior (barking).

If what is causing him to bark excessively is an external stimuli try not to expose the dog to that particular stimulus. If that is not possible -there are things you can not control, work with positive reinforcement to help him feel comfortable with what is causing him to bark.

Barking is the way dogs communicate. It is part of their nature and for the love we have for them we should all pledge to try to understand them even if that means coping with their chit-chat!

Eulogy for Massimo

Passed: Sunday, March 25th, 2012

Born in Barrio La Perla in San Juan, Puerto Rico sometime in the year of 2000.

Lived most of his life as my Dad's best buddy in Bayamón, where he was known as Máximo.

He had a great soul, always gentle with the kids and a big "smiler" for the not so young.

I will always remember him as my first great dog. The one who teach me that connecting with animals was possible.

Now you and Papi are back together, like you always were.

Please keep him company and take care of of yourself.

We will one day re-unite.

So...What is it that you need to get awesome pictures?

First off - the camera.

Point and shoot, DSLR Digital Camera even a cellphone camera.

Second - location.

The good thing about this one is that a good photo can be taken anywhere. I mean there are advantages on choosing a controlled environment when you have a specific composition in mind but your porch, bathtub, backyard, just anywhere in the house will be a good scenario to take a good picture.

Third Plan ahead

Lighting - Photography is the "art" of writing an image with light -even if you are using a digital camera this principle is still valid.

If you overexpose or underexpose a picture you will get crappy results and yes...there are always creative ways to save a photo by using Photoshop or any other photo editing software but a good picture can also be altered afterwards, so just try your best to get a well exposed shot from the beginning.

Think about what you are shooting...Where is the light source coming from? Is it natural or artificial light? Is your subject in front of the light source? Are you going to use "flash"? Do you want to create a certain mood by using the shadows?

"The use of light in a photograph can be the deciding factor of whether that picture will be spectacular or terrible."

"Props"

Just because you are shooting at home does not mean you have to rely on "good fate" for a cool moment to arise when you can create it!

Use toys, fabric, water, chairs, toilet paper...be creative and let your dog be himself and have fun with whatever prop you choose.

And last but certainly not least have patience.

Most of the time one single shot will not do it...shoot, shoot, shoot.

The more you shoot, the best are your chances of an awesome photograph!

Looking for the perfect collar

Ever since we adopted @Paco_theDog we have been struggling with his health, his weight, his skin conditions and yeah...particularly with his walk!

He is a grand-master of many different walking techniques: the sideways walk, the round-around walks, the jumpy walks... Sometimes it seems as if he had little invisible wings attached to his legs that allow him to fly from one place to another other in record time and to add to the equation he also gets very anxious around other dogs.

So far I have tried using a regular flat collar and leash, a choke chain, a martingale collar, a regular harness and also the Easy Walk harness and even tough walks were kind of manageable with the later it was no easy task for me to walk both him and @Camila_Lab at the same time.

After reading a blog post from @SophiaYin "Which Types of Collars and Harnesses are Safe for Your Dog?" I made the decision to try yet another training tool: the head halter.

Since I decided to try this collar on my luch break and there was a PetSmart store close-by I went and bought the Grreat Choice® Control Ease Head Collar (off brand for Gentle Leader head collar) and to my amazement it seems to do the trick.

The collar helps you control your dog by redirecting the his attention/movement towards you.

The principle behind this is that as with horses, the dog's body tends to go where the head is pointing. In other words where you lead the dog's head their body will follow.

He is pulling less and it is easier for me to handle him. I do hope to be able to transition him back to the Easy Walk harness later on (it seems more humane to me) but for now I think I might have found the right dog collar for my spirited rescue dog.

Leash Training Cheat sheet

It is finally time for your puppy to learn how to walk on a leash and you are super excited with the idea of all the fun you are going to have together. Visits to the dog-park, strolls on the beach, even adventurous hikes, Life with a dog is so good!

You take out the super awesome collar and leash you bought awhile back, put them on and eh...Houston we have a problem!.

The dog won't move...and now what?

There are three basic stages your puppy needs to master before he actually sets-out for his first leashed walk.

Adjust to the collar: Using a light weight collar will greatly help your pooch get used to the feeling of having something wrapped around his neck. The best time to put it on will be when he is distracted doing something (like eating). At first he might try to get the collar off but don't let him. Help him to get used to it by distracting his attention from the collar.
After your puppy becomes adjusted to the wearing his collar it will be time to "introduce the leash". Again, using a lightweight leash will make it easier on him to get used to it. Have him walk around the house with the leash dragging behind him (under supervision). If the leash is "too much" for him to handle you can tie a shoelace or ribbon to the collar instead.
When he is comfortable with the collar and leash pick up the leash and walk around following his lead. At this point is more about him feeling "Ok" than you being the leader. Finally, making sure to hold loosely onto the leash (you don't want to bring-up his pulling instincts), start "leading the dance" and have him follow you around instead. At this point you should be able to bring him outside to get used to the surroundings and after a couple of back yard walking sessions you will be good to go!

However difficult this might sound, leash training is not as hard as you probably think it is.

A dog schedule

Every dog is different from each other. Some of them are mellow an easy going by nature whereas others are a little "more spirited" and headstrong. But no matter what their personality is...they kind of like to test our mental and in my case also physical strength (I usually walk two big dogs at the same time) from time to time.

It is at those moments that you have to take a big breath and remind your self how much you love them and continue your routine of reinforcing the good behaviors and not the negative behaviors.

In my case I use several techniques and tools to help me on my day to day with the dogs but if I were to pinpoint the most basic "tool" I used I would have to say "the dog schedule".

I know that it may seem like I am cheating a little...after all a dog schedule is comprised of several "steps" or "tasks" but if you look at it as a whole you will probably agree with me that the schedule is the back bone to your dog's life. A way to provide a proper structured environment on which they can rely to help them develop into a loving and stable family member.

I personally like the proposed schedule posted by Dr. Debra Primovic on PetPlace.com

An ideal schedule through the eyes of a dog might be:

7 am– 7:30 am

Wake up and go for a brisk walk with the opportunity to urinate and defecate.

If you have 10 minutes for a little playtime, that would be great. Fetch or something interactive is a welcome game.

Spend about 10 minutes of quality time just talking and petting your dog. Notice anything unusual about his demeanor, attitude, hair coat, look of his eyes etc.

7:30 am – 8:00 am

Time to eat; change the water to make sure the bowl is full and fresh.

Offer food if you feed your dog more than once a day.8:00 am– 9:00 am

Dogs like to have the opportunity to go out again after they eat for the opportunity to urinate and defecate.

9 am – 12 pm

Nap time!? Or time to follow you around as you do your housework. If you are off to work – then naptime it will be.

12 pm – 1 pm

Ideally, most dogs would enjoy some interaction again with the opportunity to go out, exercise or play.

1 pm – 5 –pm

Nap time again? Or another opportunity to observe you working!

5 pm – 7:30 pm

Drinks, dinner, and playtime. Again, change the water and offer dinner. Monitor your dogs' appetite. Offer a longer and more extensive playtime than this morning. Let him really play and burn off some of that pent-up energy.

7:30 pm – 11 pm
