Steampunk Collection

I am very happy to announce that all 9 of the steampunk pattern series are now online in the shop, so if you have been waiting patiently while this series is completed now is your chance to get your hands on all of the patterns.

Number 8 in the series is an intricate ray gun. All those sittle curves and details seem to take forever if you are doing needle turn applique, but the overall result is worthwhile.

Pattern 9 (or pattern 1 if you'd prefer) is the cogs, or gears. This pattern has three sizes available in the download - a 5", 10" or 12" option, and you will be able to move around the gears until you have a layout you're happy with on your quilt block. A great idea for this pattern would be designing 9 or 12 blocks with slight variations and stitch them all together for a gorgeous steampunk gears quilt.

Things have been a bit quiet with a few too many commitments taking me away from sewing. As this is still a fledgling hobby business it often has to take a back seat to other things in life.

Octopus Applique Pattern

I really like this new addition to the Steampunk Applique Series. This little octopus is a little quirky, but if you have been following the Steampunk movement you will know it is a popular symbol.

The octopus pattern is provided in two sizes just like all the others and as usual is exactly the same pattern that I printed and stitched up myself so you can see what result you may get if you use the same methods.

Are you contemplating what you could make with some of these designs, or are you waiting for the whole set to be released? (of course there will be a special price available for the whole set if you want them all!!)

ATC Swaps

Just for fun, I've created a little activity group to experiment with techniques and meet some new people. Would you like to join me??

ATC swaps are becoming really popular and I thought it would be a great little project to try out some new things. ATC stands for Artist Trading Card, which is a small piece of art around the same size as a baseball card (3.5" x 2.5") - a perfect size to complete in an afternoon - which is usually created to be swapped with other artists.

My aim is to try out something new each month. It might be something I've never done before, or an older technique I can just play around with, and I'll explain how to do each technique then you'll have a couple of months to complete a little piece of art and send it to a partner.

This month the swap is for Loom Flowers. We have 3 people joining in the swap so far, however if you'd like to have a go at the technique but don't want to swap your finished product with someone else you are more than welcome to just try the method.

Sign up for the swap ends on the 15th of April so you still have time to decide if you'd like to join in. You will have a month after this time to complete your ATC and send it to your partner. Inspirations Magazine

I've doubled up on some magazines and the benefits go to you. These magazines are the beautiful Inspirations magazine from Country Bumpkin, an Australian Publication. Crown Applique Pattern

As I was finishing off this crown pattern today I couldn't help but think what it might look like as a cushion or a hanging piece in a little girls room. I think I shall have to do up another of these when I have more time in blues or pinks.

This design was created as part of the Steampunk pattern series however I think it could be a versatile pattern. Free Cross Stitch Pattern

A new pattern for cross stitch was added to the store today, and best of all... its FREE!

The cameo cross stitch design is based on the steampunk cameo silhouette applique and was drafted up using the same program that I use to make the little free designs on the Free Smapler Patterns blog. It is sized at 54x75 stitches and I think it would look best stitched on a 32 count linen. If you already have some evenweave fabric on hand, you can work out the size of this design when finished with this cross stitch calculator.

Are you unsure about buying electronic patterns in an online store? Are you worried about how to download your pattern, how to get it straight away or even if you can open the file and print it? You need not worry as you can try out the whole process before you make a payment.

There are two FREE patterns available on the Happy Bobbin Website. All of our patterns are in PDF format therefore if you can download and open one of the FREE patterns you will have no trouble with any of the other patterns. Simply add one pattern to your shopping cart, create an account and checkout as normal. Follow the prompts and on the Order Confirmation Screen you will see a download link. This is exactly the same as if you had chosen any other pattern and paid for your purchase with Paypal.

If you would like to view an example of the Order Confirmation Screen you can do so by clicking here.

If you navigate away from the Order Confirmation Screen all is not lost. There is a second download link that you can access for a short time after your purchase. Access the second link through the My Account link at the top of the Happy Bobbin Website. You will see a list of your previous orders. Click "view" next to your most recent order and on the Order Summary Page you will see a download link next to each e-pattern.

Wonderland Stitchery Pattern

I've had this cute Wonderland stitchery pattern drawn up for a while, but it has taken me until last weekend to get the stitching finished. I absolutely love the white rabbit from this set of 4 designs. I think he's possibly the cutest rabbit I've seen in a long time. What do you think?

Maybe the best thing about the Wonderland embroidery pattern is that each of the 4 designs comes in two sizes. Now that I've finished stitching the smaller size I want to experiment with the larger size and see what else I can make. I have a few more ideas for this embroidery pattern which I hope to share with you soon.

The pattern includes four designs based on Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll and influenced by paper doll styles. The designs are Alice, the Queen of Hearts, White Rabbit and Mad Hatter.

Perfect Bows Pattern

Today I've added a great pattern to the collection which can come in handy for so many uses. Do you make costumes, clothing, bags, accessories, soft toys? Then you can use this pattern and make perfect fabric bows everytime too!

I love making these bows and then attaching a badge back instead of sewing them directly on. This allows me to mix and match, taking a bow from my garment and putting it on my bag, or pinning it in my hair.

They also look fantastic if you dress them up with some lace. Add it into the seams, or down the centres, or add some dangly beads from the centre join. There are so many possibilities.

I first started seeing this style of fabric bow a couple of years ago when I was heavily into Lolita Fashion and Costuming (or Cosplay), however they were also used a lot on Victorian and Rococo Era clothing. I can also see them applied to Steampunk outfits and many other styles. Smaller fabric bows are ideal for hair pins or hat ornaments and larger ones look great on bags. Soft toys are another application I can think of, but I'm sure you'll have many other ideas as well.

The pattern includes the method I use to make these bows and I've also included instructions on working out your pattern to make any size bow you like.

Steampunk Cameo Pattern

You knew this one was coming, so it is about time she had her debut. Here is one of my favourites - Steampunk Cameo of a Woman.

She is a little intricate, but her beautiful upstyle hair bun with strands coming loose is what I love about this image. Many cameos feature images of older ladies and it is only more modern cameos that feature youthful faces, however this beautiful young woman is a perfect mix of old and new, well suited to join the steampunk silhouette pattern range. I hope you like her.

Happy New Year! + Pattern

Happy New Year everyone! I hope the festive season brought you everything you wished for and you and your family are happy and healthy. If you've got a little time off I hope you've been getting some relaxation in like I have, and hopefully some stitching as well.

I'm very happy to share the first pattern of the new year - Steampunk Airship.

This design is one of my favourites from the Steampunk Series. I love the little smoke trail coming from the smoke stacks. This was fun to design, based on a zeppelin and a sailing ship. The thin areas connecting the ship and balloon/zeppelin are tricky, but can be achieved using the needle turn applique technique. You could also do this using a normal applique technique if you carefully stitch along all the edges. I'd love to see how you sew this one!

Steampunk Keys Pattern

Introducing the second pattern in the Steampunk series. Crossed Keys features two vintage style keys in two sizes. Use the small pattern and enlarge with a photocopier to your desired size, or utilise the large design and get started now.

Husqvarna / Viking Accessories

Sorry for the lull. There will be a few more patterns released very soon. In the meantime I'd like to draw your attention to some pre-loved Husqvarna/Viking accessories you could pick up for less than half price.

There is a Machine Insert for a Horn Sewing Cabinet to enable you to do flatbed sewing. Usually these are approximately $80, but due to a few minor scratches I'm letting this go for AU$20.

There is also a Buttonhole Sensor Foot and Utility Foot B for a Husqvarna/Viking Machine. These usually retail for $120 and $25 respectively, but I'm selling these as new feet for AU$60 and AU$10.

Shipping together is cheaper. Buy all three items for AU$100 including postage anywhere in the world - this is a saving of between AU$5-20 depending on your address. Email me to arrange the special price.

Steampunk Pattern

There is a set of Steampunk silhouette designs on the horizon. This is the first - a Fleur De Lis. Best known as the stylised lily from many French heraldic crests, its history and romanticism lends itself well to Steampunk.

The Fleur De Lis pattern is available in the shop right now. The set will contain either 9 or 12 designs which I will release over the course of making a quilt with these designs.

Add the needle-turn applique instructions to your shopping cart as well if you would like extra instructions to help you use this pattern.

What is Steampunk? It is a relatively new branch of science fiction and speculative fiction. It is the imagining of an alternate history where we think what would today be like, if technology had continued its focus on steam power and clockwork rather than advances into electricity. It usually borrows heavily from Victorian era clothing and aesthetics including the colours, textures (wood, brass) and technology.

Hoot! It's Woodland Owl

Everyone loves owls right? This is a design I completed several months ago, but I wanted to make sure I was able to provide some good instructions for needle-turn applique as well.

Introducing the woodland owl: He has a lot of love to give so that is why his heart is so big! This guy started as a small sketch in my art journal and was made into a 16" cushion. I loved getting whimsical and picking a couple of unusual colours. Who has ever seen a pink and blue owl??

You can find the pattern with two size options in the shop now. If you would like to adopt the owl in the photos he is also available to buy as a one of a kind original.

Writing out the instructions for needle-turn applique meant that I had to sew up a little demonstration piece, so this week there is a second pattern available and this one is FREE! The instructions are based around what works for me and everyone has their own preferences, but I believe this is a good starting point for beginners and will have you stitching with confidence in no time.

The free pattern is a simple 6" x 4" butterfly who can be sewn up in a variety of ways. Download him by adding the needle-turn applique instructions to your shopping cart and checking out.

Key Cosy Pattern

Hi everyone. I'm pleased to announce a new pattern has just been added.

I had this idea on the bus while patting my pocket for the 20th time to check my keys were still there. I've been downsizing my handbag and now only take my purse to work with me. I'm very happy that my mobile phone fits inside my purse making it a compact little unit to carry, however what to do with my keys...?

The idea for a key holder or key cosy apparently isn't a new one, however I do hope you'll enjoy my designs. First up is a little house, perfect for your house key! I have a list of about 30 other design ideas which I hope to make as nice little afternoon projects over the coming months.

You can find the house key cosy in the shop. While making the pattern I ended up making two cosys so I'm offering one for sale as well if you'd like a Happy Bobbin original. Prototype Two is up for sale, though being a prototype doesn't mean he is inferior! He was made to test out the pattern and he turned out great! I'm keeping the first one for now - my very first with all the little errors only I will notice.

Thanks for the support so far and a very special thanks to those of you who provided some super feedback. Of course with any grand opening comes minor teething problems. I've swapped the Paypal gateway I was using. We're still using Paypal, but it should work 100% now!

Grand Opening!

Welcome to the beginning of the start of my dreams. It has taken me a long time and many late nights to get to this point and I have a sketchbook full of ideas with not enough hours in the day to stitch up all of them so far.

This is a very humble kind of beginning but I hope you will share this with me as I am pleased to announce the opening of my online store.

It is a humble start because at the moment there is only one lonely little e-pattern but I have a few more that are just waiting for me to finish off the PDFs.

The first pattern to be listed in my little shop is a sweet chicken purse. This tiny purse would be perfect for small change, business cards or a little make-up bag and also great for children! The pattern is electronic, which means that as soon as you have completed your payment you may download the pattern and get started!

The two prototypes which I made up to test the pattern are also up for sale if you would like a Happy Bobbin original. The purses are fully lined with cute fabric and are made from 100% cotton. They are one of a kind items so grab them quick!

Lastly a FREE design to celebrate this beginning. This little red space invader is a pieced quilt block. I've made mine into a wall hanging for my front door which I shall have to share with you all as soon as I've got the binding onto it.
