Lots of people out there have great ideas of informative or comical information they’d like to toss out as a list and submit to digg or reddit, but they don’t want to setup a whole blog or website, and then get limited static functionality from it. ListZe is a bit different. On this site, anyone can create a list and add items to it. Then other members can come along and add their own items that might have been forgotten originally. This is a great social collaboration tool in itself. Next members can vote items on any list up and down, effectively sorting the list in decreasing order, polarizing the items with the best (usually the funniest) up top, and the worst items on the bottom.

Now, you’re probably wondering about the 2nd part of the title, Hairballs. My wonderful girlfriend, Laura, is a huge animal person, and recently started her own blog, which she cleverly entitled Laura’s Hairball. The interface is a work in progress (sorry for the horrible photoshop on the cat), however it’s off to a nice start. She’s planning on using it as a general topic blog, discussing anything from current news to posting random jokes or pictures. Again, it’s still in it’s infancy, however if you swing by and leave her a comment, I’m sure she’d appreciate the feedback (and encourage her to post more frequently)! Good luck Laura!

One of the most requested features for Google’s RSS Reader is probably search functionality. I complained about it a few months ago, and someone must have listened!

It’s very simple, and I question if it’s fully deployed to all users yet… however it is very functional. I don’t know how many hours I’ve spent digging through past feeds, searching Google Blog Search (to no avail), trying to find some interesting article I read weeks ago…. this feature is long overdue.

Now I can say without reservation in my opinion, Google RSS Reader is the best feed reader online.

I normally don’t track search engine trends or new product releases/updates… however to me, this is important. :p

The following are first-hand accounts of the devastation WoW has on it’s devoted players… all quotes are completely unedited and pulled from a number of online forum threads, discussing their experiences with WoW players. Posters and names are not included for anonymity.

I knew this guy in college that used to be really social. Had a hot girlfriend, lots of friends, was physically fit and looked decent.

He got WoW and within 6 months his girlfriend was gone. Started fucking his best friend who is also no longer his friend. Guy ended up gaining 30lbs and turned pale as a ghost. I went in his room and he had like 15 bottles of urine stacked up along his desk because he ‘couldnt leave the raid’

He had 20+ pizza boxes stacked up along the wall of his room. His room smelled like death. His sheets were stained brown from when he did sleep. he lost his job and flunked out of school. He lives at home with his parents now I think, I havent seen him in a year or so.

Im glad I never bought that game, cause I feel like I wouldve turned into something like the people in these stories. I never want to touch this game.

my MMO horror story:

…played for over 4 days straight, 103 hours.. was camping for a Ghoulsbane in Guk.. I only stopped after 103 hours because I fell out of my chair and passed out from exhustion .. spent the next 6 days in hospital .. still didn’t get the bloody sword.. a guildy gave me one off of one of their twinks..

my friends brother was married, had two children and a home and all that stuff.

he got hooked into wow and quit his job and stopped supporting his family.. his wife eventually left him and took the kids/house, he moved back in with his mother. the guy had met some girl in wow that lived 1000 miles away and actually disappeared to go meet her/live with her. fast forward a few months, my friend brings over his brothers computer asking if theres anything i can do to help find him. all they knew was he left to go meet a girl he met online.

well, i dug through the computer and found wow screenshots and chat logs of the girl and her name, and eventually found an address and we tracked him down.. but afaik it’s done no good, he’s still living with the girl he met in-game and has completely abandoned everything here. his ex-wife and children live with her mother i think.

I’m 22 now, and the guy I’ve been best friends with since we were 14 started playing WoW about a year ago.

He never leaves his house, I could never get him to go outside and do anything, and now he doesn’t work or go to school. He lives with his mom, and just recently, he stopped returning my phone calls because he couldn’t put down his mic during a “raid”

Now we’re not really friends anymore, and I can’t even remember the last time we spoke.

Fuck WoW.

Friend of mine went from a B student to a D-E student in the last year because of WoW… I tried to warn him, tried to get him to quit but “my guild needs me”

My best friend was into WOW.. bad.. Like your story bad. It got to the point where he would shower by sitting in the chair and pour bottled water on himself.

Well, Me and my buddy went over one night because we were going to just have a few beers and his parents weren’t home. Turns out my buddy invited a few more people and when I arrived there were 10 people with us.

Anyway the WOW guy thought they were from the computer game and came to invade his house. WTF! This is when he really fucking lost it.. I mean mental hospital “lost it” So I sat there and was like I got in one little fight and my mom god scared, said your moving with your auntie and uncle in belair.

I had a room mate in a guild that he said required him to play like 48 hours a week. He spent everyday in his room on WoW and hardly ever went to class. The only time we saw him is when he ran in the kitchen to get a hot pocket.

i have a buddy i work with who is a heavy WoW player. his wife is also a heavy WoW player.

i don’t really understand the details, but he almost went through a divorce with her because of this. apparently he noticed she’d been on a different “server” than usual. something seemed amiss. there were like five nights in a row she was up all night playing. she didn’t want to play the game with him at all. turns out she was talking to some other guy and doing “quests” or something with him.

it really sounds ridiculous, but i can’t even describe the rage with which he realyed all this to me.

Another horror story Ive heard was about this one guy that was into WoW, and one day he ganked this shit out of this one low level guy. His girlfriend was a psychologist or something and was working on counseling a 12 y/o kid that one day went crazy and pulled a knife on his family. She was talking to the kid and found out he played WoW, she said her boyfriend played and told the kid his name and server he played on, and the kid went apeshit after hearing it.

Turns out her boyfriend was the one that ganked the kid, causing him to attack his family with a knife. There is audio somewhere of the guy telling the whole story

I buddy of mine in my Army unit dropped out of school (which was being paid for by the Army) and got out of the Army so that he could play WoW and work part time at a Walmart photo center.

I lived with this weird ass dude in college. He bought WOW…

…and stopped coming out of his room. He was literally home every time I was home and I only saw him 3 times in 6 months. He bought a refrigerator, did all of his dishes in his sink, and never let his two cats out of his room. He’d wait until I was gone and then put post its on my door to tell me things (bills, etc).

One day he showed me some character of his that was a girl and he’d solicit the other players to give him gold and pretend to be a girl.

Psycho.

dream comes true. we both get in. the dude gets ridiculously addicted to WoW. he completely stops going to class. academic probation -> flunked out. walking into his room was so nasty. he’d have 5 cups full of spit where he’d dip when raiding and not do anything about it. he wouldn’t answer anyones calls. he’d stay up all night and play… one time he fell asleep in his chair with his fingers still on the keyboard… and then we heard him bragging about it later on his microphone.

we actually stole his computer at one point to force him to not play for a few days and he threatened to call the cops on us

A guy I know through one of my best mates started playing wow roughly when it came out. He dropped out of school in year 10 (we are currently just about to finish year 12 and complete our HSC), he went to T.A.F.E for 6 months (aussie version of community college) then dropped out of that. Its taken him another year to get a f**king job, at pizza hut…and know all he does is punch cones and play wow.

He’s been doing this shit for 2 and a half years and is just turning into a degenerate, I feel sorry for all the kids who turn out like that.

A guy at the office used a vacation day last Friday just so he could be in on a raid.

kid failed out of college and and when he moved back home his parents knew it was because of WoW and would not let him play in their house. so he moved in with his guild leader (in france).

i failed out of med school and then went on to start a successful career as a night time rent-a-cop security guy because of WoW

In China, the parents of a 13-year-old Tianjin boy are suing the makers of “World of Warcraft” because they claim that the game was responsible for the death of their son! Seemingly, the boy jumped to his death after re-enacting a scene from the game, according to Chinese news agency Xinhua. Anti-Internet addiction advocate Zhang Chunliang is backing the parent’s suit against Blizzard Entertainment. Chunliang has apparently spoken to 63 parents whose children have allegedly suffered from online gaming addiction, and has a class-action suit in the works.

A Korean husband and wife are facing criminal charges after their baby daughter died when they left her alone in order to play World of Warcraft.

According to news site Chosun, police say the parents left their four month-old child alone in a bedroom while they went to play the MMORPG at a local Internet cafe.

When they returned five hours later, the baby was lying on her stomach and had died of suffocation.

“We were thinking of playing for just an hour or two and returning home like usual, but the game took longer that day,” the couple is reported as saying.

This is all from a video game… quite scary actually.

The only problem is airplanes aren’t the best vehicle for wardriving, so no internet. No problem. I’ve decided to promote Desktop Nexus through guest posting. Over the past six or so hours, I’ve designed, outlined, and written lengthy, high quality posts targeted to a few specific industry authority blogs that accept guest posts. Now granted, I’ve never guest posted on any of their blogs, however I’m assuming if they get an email with the post attached, and with as high quality as they are, the blogger would have no reason not to run it. Good, free, unique content is hard to come by these days, haha. At the end of every post, I’ve included a few sentences about me, with a few links to this blog and Desktop Nexus, as is the industry accepted standard for author citations and credit. I figure if I can get 4-5 of the articles to run, that’ll be about 10 high PR, high authority backlinks, with targeted anchor text… plus the traffic I might get from readers clicking on the links themselves. It makes sense. When I’m at home or at the office, I rarely have time to sit down and actually think out good content, as I’m usually programming or working on something seemingly more wholesome. Granted I could have written Digg-bait posts for the Desktop Nexus blog and hoped one of them went popular, however that’s very risky and borderline dirty SEO. Plus, (and more importantly) it also feels nice to help out some of the larger blogs I follow every day, as well as their readers. If any of the thousands of potential readers in these blogs’ audience are genuinely helped or inspired by my posts, then I feel like I’ve done something worthy of this time.

• Don’t eat breakfast – Just grab a glass of juice, and eat lunch early if you get hungry. When I eat a full meal in the morning, I feel weighed down and groggy all afternoon.
• Reward yourself – Tell yourself if you go to sleep early, you’ll get up a little earlier and swing by Starbucks, or some kind of reward. Motivate yourself to go to sleep early, as that’s the key.
• Don’t hit that snooze button – I know it’s tempting, and I know “a few more minutes won’t hurt anything,” however you must resist. You set your alarm for that time last night for a reason, and the voice of reason is dulled when you first wake up.
• Take a Shower – I’ve tried taking a shower in the evenings before I go to sleep, and in the mornings when I wake up… and I’ve found taking one in the morning works much better for me. That kick-starts my energy for the day, and without it, I’d never wake up.
• Play music while you’re getting ready – Some might not have this convenience (roommates, etc), however if you turn on the radio or TV while you’re getting ready, it helps get your mind thinking for the day, rather than enjoying it’s grogginess.
• Open your blinds before you go to sleep – What seems to be one of the smallest things makes a huge difference. If you open your blinds before you go to sleep, when your alarm goes off in the morning, the sun beaming in through those slats might just give you enough energy to smile and want to get up.
• Cherish the morning – There’s a certain empowering energy in being up early… the birds chirping, the dew in the air, serene tranquility… cherish it. Walk outside and take a deep breath. Learn to enjoy mornings, not dread them. They really aren’t so bad.

1. An already heavily requested feature… search within Google Reader. I read almost a hundred RSS feeds a day, and often times I’m wishing I could find a story I skimmed over again to show a friend… but it’s quite difficult.
2. Adsense integration with Google Analytics. I don’t use PPC campaigns so Adwords is useless to me, however I would be VERY interested in tracking my earnings with the ability to drill down to a page level. Google Analytics is a great, powerful system, and Adwords integration would be a nice touch.
3. Google Gears integration with Gmail. I love Gmail, but I find myself often wishing I could access it offline. I’ve setup Outlook (POP downloads) setup on my laptop, but I really don’t like the feel of it nearly as much as the Gmail web interface.
4. Google Gears integration with Google Docs and Spreadsheets. It would be great to simply have a link icon on my desktop that opened Google Docs, and no matter where I am (home, Starbucks, on a plane, etc.), I can always work on my documents whenever I’d like.
5. GDrive. I’d love an XDrive-style storage system run by G, where I can quickly toss any files I’d like, from MP3s to EXEs. Also knowing Google, I’m sure they’d be generous with space as well.
6. GoogOS. Okay, maybe I’m getting a bit far out now, but I’d LOVE a simple AJAX web interface with icons where I can open Google applications in smaller Meebo-style draggable CSS/JS windows. I would like a site I can go to, hit F11 to make it full screen, and no matter what computer I’m on, have access to everything in single one place.
7. Google Music Identifier. All the cell companies are doing it now (Cingular, Verizon’s V Cast Phone, etc)…. it’d be awesome if Google made a 1-800 number I could call, hold my phone up in a store or in my car, and have Google identify the artist and song for me. Bonus points if they automatically add a link to that Google Music page to my Google Notebook.
8. Google Accounting. Most of my daily operations are handed with Google’s systems (email, word processing, chat, search, etc)… but I’m still using QuickBooks to manage my finances. I’m sure they could easily create an easy-to-use personal expense tracking system, and even tie it into Google Checkout. I’d definitely use it.
9. Expand Google Blog Search to add trends and popularity. Without much work, they could become a direct competitor of Technorati and finally give them a run for their money. Google Blog Search is very bland and underdeveloped right now in my opinion. A little dedication to it would do wonders.
10. Folders in Gmail. I understand Google’s ideas for labeling emails and archiving… but I still like folders better… just drag emails and drop them in the right place. Very intuitive. I think this is one of the only flaws in Gmail and would be a radical (they seem hard-set on labels), but progressive modification.

These numbers are analyzing how many articles each top user got to the homepage (and not buried) from April 19th, 2007 to May 19th, 2007… the most powerful users on Digg.

I’ve also gone an additional step in this post and included how many friends each user has. A lot of people speculate one trick to help your articles get to the homepage is to build a large friend-base, and digging each other’s articles whenever one person submits something. That said, if anyone is feeling lonely, I’ll definitely be your friend. In the following list, I’ve excluded anyone with less than two articles hitting homepage. In the case of a tie, I ranked users with articles hitting homepage more recently higher.

I spent a good amount of time with Digg because it’s a great source for backlinks. Sure, I don’t make any money off this blog, but rather use it for experiments and giving back to the community. I occasionally post tutorials or reviews, building a small reader base and gaining decent weight in search engines, which becomes invaluable when I launch new products such as Desktop Nexus.

Most of my backlinks come from articles on Digg, but at what point does a supersite like Digg become too powerful? When does it gain wikipedia-like velocity, where no matter what happens, there’s no end in sight. I recently had an article hit homepage about Ubuntu Wallpapers, which received over 500 diggs. The problem, however, is after Google updated and reshuffled it’s results, the Digg article was crowned in the top space for ‘ubuntu wallpapers’ and number two (below) for ‘ubuntu wallpaper’, with my site below it at number five:

So Digg, receiving all it’s content from the community, has achieved such mass in search engines, that they themselves rank higher than the sites they promote. Should Google make adjustments to it’s algorithms, allowing less heavy sites to rank higher, based on the link structure? If a page has 50 backlinks, all pointing to it with no outgoing links from it (ie, no link exchanges), how can Google’s logic place one of the backlinks higher than the page being promoted? Common sense dictates that looking at a link structure such as that, Google should be able to decide which page is the source, and which are references.

However I’m tearing on Google mostly because they’re my main source of traffic, however Yahoo is even worse. Yahoo ranks both the Digg article and the DuggMirror on page one, but my site doesn’t come up at all in the first 10 pages. MSN, being clueless as usual, doesn’t rank the Digg article or my site at all.

Google is a great search engines, the best online today in my opinion, however I believe they’re over-tweaking their results. They’re degrading their overall quality by watering down the accuracy to help filter out spam.

Anyone else have any examples like this?

Completely member oriented, anyone can upload wallpapers, then the community votes if they’re a high enough quality to be added to the galleries, or if they should be deleted forever… all driven through the “Pending Additions” categories. Heavily endowed with AJAX and RSS, meta-moderation, voting and tagging, it’s truly fresh in this industry.

For example, if someone uploads a 1024×768 wallpaper, Desktop Nexus will automatically resize and remaster that wallpaper for another visitor who requests it in say, 1600×1200. It then goes a step farther and will show an AJAX script to allow any user to instantly crop (interactive) or stretch the wallpaper to create a widescreen version for anyone who requests it… so essentially one wallpaper of any size is uploaded, and Desktop Nexus will make it available to anyone with any resolution… completely bypassing previous limitations of wallpaper sharing, standard aspect ratio or widescreen.

Wallpapers can be tagged with descriptive words to link similar ones together. AJAX technology helps suggest commonly used tags as you type.

Our tag clouds are a great way of quickly seeing what’s popular in each gallery.

Every member (quick, free signup) gets a My Desktop Nexus profile they can tweak and customize, allowing them to share everything from their hobbies to their favorite wallpapers.

I have big dreams for this site, and for nearly a year I’ve poured my heart into it, spending a week on a small detail most users would never even notice. I honestly believe this site could become the next YouTube, as to this day there is no household name for wallpaper sites. There is a dominate site in almost every industry, but wallpapers is 95% scattered small sites. Before when I wanted a wallpaper, I went digging through Google Images, sorting through the low quality and odd size images. Sure, Webshots did pretty well, but I believe they shot themselves in the foot with advertising in their downloadable client. We can do better. I want someone to be sitting in their chair and decide their desktop background is getting old, and for the first thought through their mind to be “Desktop Nexus”.

We’re still tweaking the site and adding new functionality all the time, so stay tuned. I’d also appreciate any feedback you have on Desktop Nexus. Thanks!

Go There -> Desktop Nexus Wallpapers

That’s right, watch it once for entertainment, then watch it again for personal gain. Boiler Room has some of the best sales pitches and closes I’ve ever seen. The second time watching it, consider it instructional material. The hardest part of this is you have to separate yourself from the immoral side of what’s actually going on in the movie. Don’t get caught up in the characters or plot, but simply watch the techniques of selling.

Watch Giovanni Ribisi (the main character)’s rebuttals to common objections and excuses. Watch him move the conversation in any direction he wants, always aiming for a close. Watch his psychological techniques, saying lines like “I don’t care how much stock you pick up,” rather than saying “I don’t care if you buy stock or not.”

No matter if you’re cold calling clients, following up on hot leads, or talking face to face with a customer who just walked in the front door of your shop, this movie demonstrates some sales techniques, that if mastered, can prove invaluable to your business.

Here are some great quotes from the movie:

“Move around, motion creations emotion.” – Very true. When you’re selling your product, don’t be still. You need to be passionate and energetic, excited as if you honestly believe it’s the greatest product in the world. Stand up, walk around, move, get some blood flowing. Your pitch will increase in power exponentially.

“There is no such thing as a no sale call. A sale is made on every call you make. Either you sell the client some stock, or he sells you on a reason he can’t. Either way, a sale is made, the only question is who’s going to close, you or him?” – An absolutely brilliant line that I’ve never heard or thought of before. Your job in sales is to disarm any inhibitions and or excuses the other end might have. Consider each call a battle- either you win or they do. If you lose, at least go down fighting. You’d be surprised how many calls that seem hopeless can turn around in an instant.

“I just want you to test me out.” – This is a great quote for closing a new client. It shows you have confidence in your product, otherwise you wouldn’t say it. It’s an indirect way of saying “if I believe in my product, you can too.”

“… you’d be pretty excited about my next idea, right? Of course you would, you’d be out there handing out my business cards, wouldn’t you?” – This line was particularly interesting for me. It’s nothing revolutionary, but it’s a cool line to add to your book, and pull out at the right time. Often times during a sales call you come around to asking hypothetical questions about how good the outcome of them buying your product would be. An example of this in use, “If my widget increases your productivity by 500%, you’d be happy wouldn’t you? (I suppose so.) Of course you would! You’d be handing out my business cards wouldn’t you?” This is a great line for reinforcing their positive image of your product, while easing the mood a bit and still maintaining a level of professionalism.

Boiler Room, despite it’s immoral plot, is one of my favorite movies to date. Check it out.

How’s that for SEO? Legally prohibiting anyone from linking to their homepage with any negative associations. My favorite part was “This limited right may be revoked at any time”… so they could suddenly decide you’re not allowed to link to their website anymore, and sue you? Hah

Edit: Wow, it seems Verizon is even worse:

• Treat everyone like a hot lead – Sometimes the most apathetic-seeming person turns out to be your buyer. Never let yourself slip into the mindset of “this person isn’t going to buy it,” because then subconsciously (or consciously) your sales pitch will lose momentum and you will almost definitely lose the deal. The only thing lost from putting 100% effort the whole time is a little energy, as you’ll most likely never see the person again anyway.
• Clean out “junk” in door trays, etc. – Anyone coming to see your car is looking to buy a new car for themselves. Sure it’s old and used to you, but to them it’s brand new. The entire time they’ll be trying to visualize themselves owning and driving the car, and your personal nicknacks scattered around the car will cloud their imagination. When they see someone else’s things all over the car, it detaches them from it on a personal level, and makes it harder for them to see them self owning it.
• Make the car seem new – Again, your prospect knows the car is used, however it’s still a new car to them. A few bucks and a little attention to detail can greatly increase your car’s new-vibe, which is huge in convincing someone who comes to look at it. Aside from a good wash (inside and out), here are few cheap, but necessary things to do:
  • If you have leather seats, condition them. It’ll cost you $10 and take half an hour, but afterwards you’ll admit it’s a night and day difference. Strongly recommended.
  • Condition the rubber strips around the door and window frames. Everyone looking at a new car will notice this, if only subconsciously. When they open the door and get in the car, if they see the old, gray, cracking weather strips, they’ll psychologically apply it to the whole car. They last thing you want them thinking is the car is old and falling apart. If you don’t want to spend the money on actual conditioner, vasoline works really well for this as an alternative.
  • Spray on tire shine. Tire shine costs a few bucks and literally takes seconds to apply, however it’ll triple the external appearance of your car.
• Get a car fragrance – I recommend the “new-car” scent, as it goes with the vibe we’re aiming for. These can be picked up at any gas station and will only set you back a dollar or two, however it’s another thing your prospect will notice, and it’ll work hand-in-hand with all the other suggestions to truly feed that person’s internal desire for a nice, new car.
• Show off your air conditioning / heater – One of the best impressions on a perspective buyer is a nice heater or air conditioning system. Before the arrive, sit in the drivers seat and turn the air vents toward the driver’s face with a solid, but not overwhelming blast (maybe medium on the fan control). If it’s winter, warm up the car all the way just before the prospect arrives so the heater will already be hot. When they arrive and look around the car for a bit, they’ll most likely want to do a small test-drive. When they sit in the car and turn it on, the refreshing cold or hot blast will trigger a “ooh, nice” reaction in their mind. As soon as that happens, you can immediately step in and turn it down pretending it was an accident, rather than looking like you were showing off. A quick sorry and a small smile should be all it takes.
• Read your prospects mind – This is a huge tip that could make your sale in itself. Play a little psychological warfare with your prospect and predict their personality type, then act on that to keep them in the right mindset. For example, on the phone if your prospect seems to be a high-energy, friendly, fun, youthful female, consider finding a cute teddy bear and strapping it in with the seat belt on the passenger side. When she sees it, you’ll probably get an “awe….” reaction, and immediately increase her overall psychological attachment to the car. Granted this might backfire on some women, but that’s up to you to read them accurately beforehand. Another example is a male buying a sports car from you. When the topic of a test-drive comes up, consider throwing a few jokes out there such as “Are you sure you can handle it?” always followed with a huge grin so they know you’re teasing. When making jokes, ALWAYS keep your car in a positive light. This injects good thoughts in their mind. If it’s a guy buying a sports car, he’ll probably want a fun, fast car… so joking about it being too powerful or handling too well is usually a safe strategy. However for jokes to work, it requires you to be able to seem completely natural and friendly when saying them, otherwise the prospect will see through you as trying too hard.

Now, if you use any of these tips and they help you successfully sell your car, I’ll obviously retain a 15% commission payable to be through PayPal.

From the results:

I’ve finally finished adding up all the authors who’s submissions made homepage in the past 30 days (same as before, March 15th 2007 to April 15th 2007), and it had a strangely cool outcome. The number of users who had more than one article hit the homepage in the past 30 days works out to be EXACTLY 300. It’s the small things in life….

I submitted the article to Digg (link), and within 3 hours it had almost 100 diggs. It quickly became the most popular upcoming article, but even at 100+ diggs, it did not cross over to homepage. In fact, after sitting there at the top of upcoming for an hour or two, it got buried. Here’s an example of the comments posted on the digg article after it happened, “This should hit the front page, I can’t believe it got buried.”

I’m not saying anything that didn’t deserve it should have been homepaged, I’m just curious with such high support in upcoming, why it didn’t cross over.

Now, I’m not sure what happened with Digg’s system there, but this article has been attracting quite a bit of buzz on it’s own, including a post on seomoz: link. From that, I’ve decided to try again and see if things happen any differently this time. If you know what could have stopped this article from crossing over to the homepage last time, I’d be curious to know (please leave a comment here).

Engadget takes two from all the geeky pleasures Diggers get from prototype phones and ipod rumors.

#3 – www.nytimes.com – 44 homepage stories – 36487 total diggs
Usually hosting stories of school-related misconduct or political polls, the New York Times often provides a trustworthy medium for widely known stories. For example, today’s New York Times article about Google buying DoubleClick reached homepage, trumping over the dozens of other submitted sources about the same story.

“Caveat Emptor” is a widely popular theme among Diggers, and I believe the Consumerist is a medium Digg uses to connect together and raise awareness of corporate misconduct.

Going hang-in-hand with number 2 ranked Engadget, Gizmodo further supports with Digg’s geeky gadget addiction.

Another trustworthy medium (in Digg’s overall opinion) for high-profile stories and interesting oddball stories.

A fairly tight race against Yahoo News, the New York Times pulled ahead this month by a margin of 1-2 popular stories.

Yahoo News, like all the others on this list, highlight the quality of articles written or the quickness of news broken… as each submission gets on average 1665 diggs.

Gadgets are often a hot topic on Digg.

There has been a strong push for a pictures section on Digg, however while each submitted picture that hits the homepage gets a very high digg-count, only having 13 popular submissions from Flickr all month tends to show it might not be worth it to dedicate an entire section of the website to just pictures. Granted other many websites submit pictures as well, so this benchmark isn’t very accurate.

#8 – www.cnn.com – 32 homepage stories – 29821 total diggs
Many articles made popular, but usually not as highly dugg as articles from the New York Times (#4) or Yahoo News (#5).

#9 – www.washingtonpost.com – 30 homepage stories – 27867 total diggs
The same as CNN, many homepage articles, but few high-ranking submissions.

#10 – www.scribd.com – 9 homepage stories – 25474
An absolutely incredible ranking- Scribd hit the top 10 list with only 9 homepage articles. They hold the number two slot on the most popular submissions this month with “What you always wanted to write on your exams but couldn’t,” which greatly boosted their ranking (6500 diggs).

There you have it, the top 10 highest ranked domains on Digg, in order of homepage appearances and total digg count. If enough people enjoy this, I might do it again over a larger time-period (maybe even from digg’s very beginning until now, using archive.org).

- Thanks to my amazing girlfriend Laura for pointing this out to me. I’m the computer guy, and she’s still showing me things on the internet I’ve never seen before.

I stumbled across this site recently which has a large list of any and all high-priced items on Amazon, but in this post I’m only highlighting the ones I found particularly interesting.

How would you like to own your own, personal space suit for only a million dollars? Of course, if you got that, you’d also need your own $10 million space ship. With those you can bring back a $1 million space rock paperweight… a great addition to any office!

Read the reviews on the space rock, they’re pretty good.

People say BMWs have expensive parts (I drive an M3), but at least I don’t drive a Civic! They have to pay almost $900,000 for an aftermarket exhaust.

And I know Amazon sells a lot of random things like some auto parts (above)… but a full auto parts store?

If your a chemistry geek, Amazon has a great deal on a magazine subscription… only $6,000 per issue!

And of course, for the lady…. Amazon sells a certified, 7.12 carot, half-million dollar diamond.

This is a quite simple process. Let’s assume we have all the code already in place from the last tutorial. In your motionpack.js file, let’s add a new function at the very bottom, looking like this:

Now, stepping though this function is very simple. There’s an if-statement to check is the DIV is already hidden, or if it’s still visible. If the style.display property is set to “none”, then it’s hidden, so we slide the DIV down. If it is visible, the code jumps to the else statement, and slides the DIV up, using the same slidedown() and slideup() functions we used in the last tutorial.

Now, your link itself would look like this:

Hearing about AJAX constantly, but never have found time to read a lengthy, frustrating, complex tutorial? In the following post, I’m going to explain how to add AJAX functionality to your website in three easy steps. It’s actually quite simple, and I’m going to try and be clear and to the point, but not over or under-explain anything like most tutorials have a tendency to do.

Before you begin, decide what purpose or additional functionality adding AJAX to your website will accomplish. Will it be a live search feature? Something to save user preferences? In this example, we’re developing a simple calculator. Let’s dive in.

Step 1: Create the Intelligence
First let’s make the brain of the system. In our calculator, we’re going to need a PHP function to actually perform the operations. We’ll handle the front-end later, but for this file, we’ll take our input from GET request strings (variables passed through the URL itself, such as file.php?var=value&var2=test).

Now, let’s take a look at this file. We’re working with three variables passed from the GET string: the operation such as add/subtract/divide/multiple ($_GET['op']), and the two numbers we’re performing the math on ($_GET['num1'] and $_GET['num2']). For example, we might call this page like this: backend.php?op=add&num1=12&num2=4 . This is running our above file (backend.php), passing “add” as the ‘op’ variable, and 12 and 4 as the two numbers.

The first four lines of the above backend.php script checks to make sure all the variables were entered. If any of the three values are blank (“”), then it errors and exits. The next if-block is checking for a divide by zero error. If the op variable is divide and the num2 variable is zero, it errors and exits. Simple.

Next it checks to ensure you entered valid numbers with the is_numeric() function in PHP. If you enter a letter or something else in the field, it will show and error and exit.

The next (and last) block we get to is the switch statement. This goes through and checks the op variable to see what we’re trying to do here. Every case-statement represents one of the possible operations (add/subtract/divide/multiply). When it figures out which operation is being requested, it performs the math on num1 and num2, echo’s the result, and breaks out of the switch statement, thus ending the file. If you need to brushen up on how switch statements work, php.net has a great tutorial.

There, now you’re 1/3rd done with adding interactive AJAX functionality to your web application. Easy right?

Step 2: Create the Form
Now we’re going to create the frontend to the AJAX. This is the part the user sees, and is mostly basic HTML. You can add this to any PHP or HTML file you have, anywhere you want.

Here’s the frontend code for our calculator:

This is simple HTML, adding two textboxes, a drop-down (with values corresponding to the values of the case statement in backend.php), a button, and a DIV. Notice I’m not using a submit button (it doesn’t matter) because I’m not using a form. This might not be best practice, but it goes to show you’re not submitting anything to another page, like you traditionally would. The button has a function “doMath()” which is called from the onClick attribute. We’ll explain this function in step 3, but for now, just know that begins the AJAX and solves the math problem. Also notice we’re using id’s instead of names for the textboxes and drop-down field (select)- this is for us to reference the fields from Javascript in the next step. The last line is a simple DIV with a bit of CSS styling (display: inline makes it appear after the equals button, rather than on it’s own line, and the font size is for aesthetics). We set the id of this div to “answer”, and we’ll be using it later from the Javascript to output the answer.

Very easy. Now we have the backend setup to do the math, and the frontend to ask the user what kind of math he wants to do… so now the only piece left is connecting them together!

Step 3: Connecting the Frontend and Backend Together
This step is the trickiest, but stick with me, and you’ll see how easy it really is. We use Javascript (AJAX = Asynchronous Javascript and XML) to talk between the HTML and the PHP.

For this step, let’s create another new file, and call it ajax.js.

Now, your first reaction might be to panic, but stay calm, it’s not that bad. The entire getHTTPObject() function (half the file) you do not need to understand. It’s a standard function included in almost every AJAX script out there… simply copy and past that exactly as it is, and forget about it. There, now you’re just left with the first line, the doMath() function, and a small function called handleHttpResponse.

The first line is declaring an object to ask PHP for it’s result. Think of it as a mini web browser.

The doMath() function is where you actually send the AJAX request. Remember it being called when you click that button in the frontend? This is what’s run. The first three lines of this function are building a variable (url) that is the PHP page we’re going to request. It begins with “backend.php?op=” and grabs the value of the drop-down from the frontend to find out if we’re adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing. Then it adds the two numbers from the frontend on to the end of URL request string as well, using document.getElementById to find them (the textboxes’ values). Now the url variable is left with something similar to the example I gave right after the code in step 1. You could in theory plug this URL into your web browser, and see the result yourself, but instead we’ll let Javascript do it for us. The last three lines of the doMath() function pass that URL to our mini web browser (variable “http”), and essentially press the Go button. It sends the request, and tells it to notify us when it gets a response back, via the handleHttpResponse() function.

Now, the last function of our Javascript file is the handleHttpResponse() function… called automatically by our mini web browser when our PHP page finishes downloading (and it has an answer). The if-statement is basically saying “if the PHP site is done loading and you have an answer, continue.” The middle line is a call to set the innerHTML property of the answer DIV on the frontend to whatever the PHP page says…. in our case… the math answer.

Important!
Now, for this to work, you need to call the ajax.js file from the file where your frontend is. This is done by simply placing this line above the frontend somewhere in the code:

The best place to put this is between the HEAD tags of the file, but anywhere would work. If you do not add this line, your website will give errors when someone tries the AJAX, and it won’t work.

And you’re done!

Now, I’m sure critics are going to ask why do this with AJAX when I could easily accomplish the same thing with pure Javascript, and the answer is this is a tutorial to learn. Often times the PHP backend does MySQL calls, or things that Javascript couldn’t do. For example, live searches (results below the textbox as you type) are this same basic framework, but the backend searches a database for what the user is typing, and returns the results to set in the answer div (equivalent). Simple!

11. Throw away your sympathy card
Diggers are (by nature) cold-blooded, heartless, soulless creatures with no morals. If you want some e-hugs for losing your goldfish, reconsider your membership.

10. Learn to hate Microsoft
Remember when you were six years old and fell off your bike? It is Microsoft’s fault. Didn’t like your dinner last night? Blame Microsoft. Got herpes? Microsoft. Simple.

9. God is a figment of your imagination
The Digg userbase is predominately Atheist. Whenever Richard Dawkins sneezes, there’s a front page article about it. On Digg, evolution is not a theory, it’s a historical fact.

8. Long lists suck
The average digger has an attention span on par with an African Fruit Fly. If you see any list with over 20 items, it’s your obligation as a Digger to skip it without a Digg.

7. Don’t burn bridges
Unnecessarily calling out other diggers is a quick way to get blacklisted. Use your friends list on Digg to build a positive network, which is very beneficial when submitting articles.

6. Learn your meme’s
O rly? But does Chuck Norris blend in your base setting a trap that runs linux? Lollerskates!!

5. Thou shalt only speak praise of Ubuntu
“Have you lost weight? Haircut? Oh, no, you just installed Ubuntu on your laptop. Nice!” Ubuntu Linux is in, and if you don’t know about it, you’re not.

4. Forget your business classes
Digg users like fighting cell phone contracts, protesting lawsuits, abusing copyrights, and just about anything else to make a stand against corporate dominance.

3. Train your stomach
What a normal person would consider vile and disgusting, diggers bask in. For example, a top story might be about male bodily fluids in aMcDonalds milkshake (link).

2. George Bush is always wrong
If unsure about touchy political debates on digg, always default to Bush is wrong. He says send in more troops to Iraq? Your hero is whoever says to withdrawal from Iraq.

1. There is no website better than Digg
People say Apple has a cult-like following… I believe digg is worse. There is a huge population of diggers who are beyond dedicated, even going as far as vandalizing other sites that use similar technology.

There you have it. Study these simple bullet points and you’ll make it just fine on Digg.
