Hershey Camera Club Competition

I haven't blog for awhile, so I decided to post one of my entries for Hershey Camera Club print competition on 4/7/2011. It was the last competition of the year. The entry below got second place on Class B and pretty much forced me to move up to Class A next year due to the total points that I have received this year. I am actually looking forward to the challenge next year.

Since it was print competition, I can decide the orientation and for the competition, this was presented in horizontal format with the light coming from left to right. This was actually taken with my point and shoot camera at Baltimore Aquarium. And no, it wasn't that detail and the line was not that straight. You can see the original photo at the end of this post. Here are several things that I did to enhance the photo:

Saturation. The color coming out of the camera is not as strong.
Straightening the lines.
Sharpening to bring out the lines and texture of the wall. Unfortunately, I don't remember what technique to sharpen the photo. I may have used either Unsharp Mask or High-Pass Filter.

I went to Hershey Camera Club Model Shoot last weekend. The photographers had a blast and I thought the models enjoy it too. I think the models will even enjoy it again once they got the photos. Over the next few days/weeks, I will be posting some of the best photos here.

I took Adra's portrait at the same time with Carlie and Eden. It was slightly easier to shoot Adra's portrait compared to Carlie since she is less active and doesn't move around as much as Carlie.

This is Carlie, Eden's older sister from the previous post. I will have to admit it was a challenge to shoot Carlie. She was very active. When I got in front of her, she would have turned around and ran to a different direction. It became more challenging with the harsh noon time sunlight. No excuse though. I need to be able to get the shots no matter what. I know her mom loves the results and that is good. And I keep learning and improving my skills.

Her friend, Adra was there too and I got some shots of them together. I will post more photos of Adra on my next post.

I will be posting children portraits that I did a few weeks ago for my next few posts. I enjoyed doing the session. The weather was surprisingly nice that day. The shoot started around 11am, so I had to deal with harsh light through the session. I wish I had a reflector with me, but I think I still got some good shots.

These photos are not taken by me. It is actually not even taken by an adult. These photos were taken by my 3 yrs old daughter. It was probably the first time she was using my DSLR and having to look through the viewfinder instead of the LCD to take photos. But she did an amazing job that I have to share it.

A few weeks ago, I was asked by my friend to take photos for Pennsylvania United Cricket Association (PAUCA) Bash/Award ceremony. I accepted it not knowing what challenges will be ahead of me. This was my first time being the event photographer. Wow, what a different experience. First, I didn't even ask how many people would be in the event. I was surprised when I arrived there and see the number of tables and when I asked my friend, he told me there would be around 500 guests!!! Second, I knew that the event won't start on time. The published start time was 5pm. The event itself started after 6pm. My friend was not kidding when he said it was 5pm India standard time, meaning that the earliest it would start would be 5:30pm. And trying to deal with bad lighting and not getting in the way of the video guy make it more challenging too. But I think I get some decent photos. Photography Reflections for This Week

I remember reading Chase Jarvis' Shake your tree today post from last year. I decided to search for it again and see if I need to shake my tree this week, at least this month. Check out the post here. I will try to look at it either every two weeks or every month and commit to something based on that post. Here is one thing that I will commit for this year (hopefully, if my wife read this, she will be happy with this decision not to spend more money on another camera gear. Love you, Dear!)

#9. Remind yourself that the gear you can't afford is not the barrier keeping you from success. Gear has very little to do with photography.

I have been looking for new camera body, even though my Nikon D40 has served me really well. I was thinking of upgrading to Nikon D90. With this reminder, I decided that I will not upgrade my camera body at least for this year (unless the unfortunate thing happen to my Nikon D40).

Wow, it has been quite awhile since i updated this blog. I have been busy organizing Help-Portrait event and getting all the prints and frames ready. It is almost done. We have delivered the photos to Bethesda Mission Men's and Women's shelter. We still have some additional 8x10 photos to be delivered to Women's shelter once I got the photos delivered to me.

Anyway, Help-Portrait Harrisburg, PA event @ Bethesda Mission Men's and Women's shelters was a huge success. Everyone involved had a wonderful time. Those that have the portraits taken were so excited about it.

I would however say that I receive more than what we give to them. Here is the video recap of Help-Portrait Harrisburg, PA.

Help-Portrait Harrisburg

I am excited about Help-Portrait Harrisburg. This is the first time I actually organize this type of movement in my community/area/city. We got a good group of photographers and other volunteers, such as makeup artists that are going to join help-portrait harrisburg.

Anyone can be involved wherever you are. It is a worldwide movement. For Harrisburg, PA group, check out Help-Portrait Harrisburg website and/or community page.

Matt - the SVEFC sound guy [Harrisburg, PA Photography]

I am continuing on the theme of people from SVEFC. The featured person for this post is Matt. Matt is the "sound" guy. While I only run the sound board on sunday each month, he runs the sound board almost every week. In most cases, he will be there even during my scheduled week and helps out.
