    <description>&lt;p&gt;A few weeks ago I blogged about using index cards for a pedagogical exercise known as "think-pair-share" that can transform any classroom, meeting, or other event since it not only guides attention but it creates a better, more controlled and focused situation for conversation, collaboration, and exchange, removing the awkwardness of "alpha sociality" that hinders the introverted.&amp;nbsp; Here's the url for that device--it's not just a trick but a conceptual realigning of participation in a group and contribution to the group, without needing any bandwidth, clickers, apps, or anything but ind&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Are you 'game' to do science?</title>

    <description>&lt;p&gt;I had a long but playful day yesterday in the lab with my first year Uni students. We were exploring the mechanisms by which water, minerals and sugars move through plants - setting up experiments using dialysis tubing, cooked and raw potatoes, celery and various other objects, and looking at specimens using a microscope. Amid the noisy hubub and laughter of a biology lab class, all of us (yes even me) &amp;nbsp;were dipping in and out of our various digital communities, looking things up on the net, texting people, and playing games while waiting for our experiments to 'brew'.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Computers &amp; Writing 2012 - Roundtable on "Hacking the Classroom" (Sunday, May 20)</title>

    <description>&lt;p&gt;I'm really excited to participate in a roundtable of lightning talks on the topic of hacking the higher ed classroom at this year's &lt;a href="http://chasslamp.chass.ncsu.edu/~cw2012/cfp" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"&gt;Computers and Writing Conference &lt;/a&gt;held at North Carolina State University. Moderated by &lt;a href="http://www.jenterysayers.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"&gt;Jentery Sayers&lt;/a&gt;&amp;nbsp;(a HASTAC Scholar for many years, he's now professor at University of Victoria, and continues to be an active part of the HASTAC community),&amp;nbsp;the roundtable includes scholars from different universities and levels.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>What do Think Tanks Produce?</title>

    <description>&lt;p&gt;Watching Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner being interviewed by David Wessel about the U.S. economy and financial challenges (&lt;a href="http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/WithTr" rel="nofollow"&gt;C-Span; Peterson Institute 2012 Fiscal Summit&lt;/a&gt;) I pondered again how nuts&amp;amp;bolts technical communications might contribute to the project of producing a well informed citizenry. And more: how this might become part of our education system.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>The NYPL Renovation and the Future of Libraries</title>

&lt;p&gt;The New York Public Library has, for some time, been wanting to change the central branch at 42nd Street and 5th Avenue, known as the&amp;nbsp;Stephen A. Schwarzman building, into a more public, open space. How could this be a bad thing? The news is that virtually everyone in the scholarly, literary, and journalistic community thinks it is.&lt;/p&gt;
