Fifty-four years ago today, a beautiful 17-year-old girl from Finland was crowned (by Hollywood actress Piper Laurie) the first Miss Universe at a glittering ceremony at The Municipal Auditorium in Long Beach, California, with a court of honor composed of Hawaii’s Elza Kananionapua Edsman (first runner-up), Greece’s Daisy Mavraki (second runner-up), Hong Kong’s Judy Dan (third runner-up) and Germany’s Renate Hoy (fourth runner-up).

Her name: Armi Helena Kuusela.

Nobody could have imagined that Armi would become an adopted daughter of the Philippines when she married Virgilio Hilario. Their love story was immortalized in a movie entitled Now and Forever.

On March 9, 1953, nine months after she won the Miss U title, Armi was invited by the Philippine International Fair Committee to crown that year’s Miss Philippines. During her stay (until April 11, same year), Armi paid a courtesy call on then President Elpidio Quirino, Supreme Court justices, senators and congressmen; laid a wreath at the Bonifacio Monument; visited Maryknoll College (now Miriam College), UP, Ateneo de Manila, the Balara Filtration Plant and Baguio City where she met Virgilio through a blind date.

Funfare’s "other beauty expert" Celso Caparas (now working in the Middle East) recalls the rest of Armi’s memorable stay in the Philippines:

On March 12, the lawmakers discarded their usual "parliamentary sobriety" when Armi called on then Senate President Eulogio Rodriguez and Speaker Eugenio Perez. Smitten by Armi’s beauty, then Rep. Ferdinand E. Marcos (Ilocos Norte) introduced himself as the only eligible bachelor in the House and confessed that his knees gave way after meeting her up close and personal.

Prior to the Miss Philippines coronation night, Armi had a personal appearance in the Show of Shows topbilled by Dolphy, Katy dela Cruz, Bayani Casimiro, Chichay and Tolindoy at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. On March 20, Armi crowned Cristina de Leon Galang (1953 Miss Philippines), with Benigno Aquino Jr. as her escort. Cristina’s court of honor included Violeta Villamor (1953 Miss Visayas and Pearl of the Orient), Gilda Gruet Walstrom (Miss Mindanao), Norma Jimenez (Miss Manila) and Imelda Trinidad Romualdez (Muse of Manila).

Two days before her departure, Armi danced the rigodon de honor with the winners of the Miss Philippines contest and prominent social figures during the Farewell Ball held at the fair’s open auditorium. Shedding tears, Armi left the country on April 11 for Hong Kong and Japan with a heavy heart. She expressed her desire to stay in the Philippines because of the warm hospitality accorded to her.

Indeed, she won the hearts of the Filipinos particularly then 25-year-old Virgilio "Gil" Hilario who studied banking, marketing and foreign trade in Columbia University and at the same time worked with the Philippine National Bank in New York. Friends in the know believe that one of the reasons why Armi was swept off her feet by Gil was because of his dancing skills. Gil was an expert in mambo, samba, rumba and other ballroom steps.

Gil followed Armi on her trip to Tokyo where they arrived on April 26 on separate planes. Their romance blossomed in Tokyo until they mutually agreed to get married on her 19th birthday on Aug. 20. He gave her a three-carat diamond engagement ring. But love couldn’t wait. On the wee hours of May 3, Gil was involved in a scuffle when he defended Armi from a drunken American newspaperman who tried to harass Armi inside the Cosmopolitan Nightclub.

Before the incident, Armi chose to give up her Miss Universe crown and title, her plans to take up physical education and language and make more movies but decided to marry that day instead. Gil was sporting a black right eye when he exchanged marriage vows with Armi (who wore a blue nylon lace gown and carried a small bouquet of roses), officiated by Rev. Fr. Bruno Blitter, at the St. Ignatius Church in Yatsuya, Tokyo, with her sister Irma Kyromies as matron of honor and Roberto Villanueva (then VP of Chronicle Publications) as best man, Gil’s close friend. She received a brand new 1952 Cadillac as a wedding gift.

After their two-month honeymoon in the US and Europe, the couple settled in the Philippines. Their love story was immortalized into a movie, Now and Forever, which was shown on Dec. 29, 1953 at Center and Palace theaters.

Back home, Armi had a film under her name, Maailman Kaunein Tyttö (or The Most Beautiful Girl in the World). In 1955, Armi (with Gil) visited Finland for the first time since 1953, and the couple did a Finnish documentary film, Pohjolan Tähtitaivaan Alla (or Under The Northern Stars).

They had five children and six grandchildren who now live in different parts of the globe, namely: Arne, Anna-Lisa, Jose/Jussi, Eva-Maria and Miguel/Mikko (the only one based in Manila).

Gil and Armi were active in the Barrio Leaders Association of which Gil was the president. Gil was even named the Honorary Consul of Finland which elated Armi no end. From 1954 to 1956, Gil played the role of John in the passion play, Martir sa Golgota, staged at the Manila Grand Opera House, with Gloria Romero as the Virgin Mary. Armi became a Camay Girl and she posed with her family for print and commercial ads.

Gil died on Sept. 7, 1975. Armi remarried, to Albert Williams, a US diplomat, on June 8, 1978. They are now living in La Jolla, San Diego, California, where she is active in various community undertakings and deeply involved in cancer research.

First Miss Universe - Armi Kuusela of Finland

I arrived in the Philippines in February 1953 as a young and impressionable Miss Universe to attend the official opening ceremonies of the first international fair in Manila. I was completely overwhelmed by the outpouring enthusiasm, warmth and adoration of the crowds of people wherever I went. I had never expected anything quite so magnificent – nor the extraordinary and special arrangements that were made to make me feel welcome and comfortable.
I was invited to stay in the Presidential Suite of the Manila Hotel.

I had my own Miss Universe committee to take care of my every need and to provide advice and companionship throughout my stay. Among the many exciting events that I particularly remember, was the party in my honour in Malacanang Palace given by the President of the Philippines, President Quirino. It was truly like living a dream. I remember shedding copious tears as I waved my final goodbyes to the many who came to see me off. Little did I know then that I would return so soon.
When I returned to the Philippines some months later as a young bride, married to Virgilio Hilario a new chapter in my life was to unfold. I was faced with a great many challenges and obligations – many of which I had not foreseen. For one, I had naively thought that I would live a quiet and peaceful life of a wife away from the limelight, responsibilities and obligations of the first Miss Universe. That of course was not to be. I soon began my first public appearances in charity events and involvements in many facets of the community, adjusting to the totally different environments, climate, culture, customs of the country and my new home in Malate. It was exciting, but not without its problems and demands. Virgilio’s family and friends were always kind and ready with their advise – a big help to an inexperienced and often perplexed newcomer.

Some years later we started a family which eventually grew to include five children: three boys and two girls – a great joy to both of us. I was a busy mother as well as a business partner as I was always included in our business ventures. One of them being the Gilarmi Apartment Hotel, our first effort together as partners. It is still in existence and doing well, I hear, under new ownership.

We were active in the Barrio Leaders Association movement and traveled the country as Gil was for many years the President of the organization. Our social life was busy with a great deal of entertaining for business and friends. We were even busier after Gil was named the Honorary Consul of Finland, a great honour that he was very proud of. He loved Finland and its people.

The position gave us the opportunity to meet many important Finnish people from the world of business and diplomacy. One of our principal responsibilities was to arrange their schedules and official meetings with the leaders of the Philippines. We were able to bring together key representatives from both countries to further our mutual interests.

The years from 1953 until 1979, when we lived in the Philippines, were years of great personal growth, fulfillment and happiness for me. I will always remember the great kindness and affection of the Filipino people, and will always be grateful for the opportunity to have had this experience to live among these extraordinarily hospitable and generous people.

I never lost touch with Finland as we were frequent visitors there. When the children were old enough to travel, they came with us almost annually for long visits.

Now the children live in five different countries: Arne in Santiago, Chile with his wife Carol, a son Cristobal (23 years) and daughter Maria Elisa (16 years); Anna-Lisa lives in Barcelona, Spain with her husband Luis, a daughter Katrin (18) and a son Alejandro (16); Jose/Jussi lives in Vancouver, Canada with his wife Jaqueline; Eva-Maria in Foster City, California with Carl, a daughter Natalie (14) and a son Eric (11); and Miguel/Mikko lives in Manila, Philippines.

The children have their roots in the Philippines where they grew up and will always feel a part of the country although they live so far away now. Mikko is the only one who remained there. They, however, feel also great affection for Finland and its people whom they admire.

They have happy memories of their visits there. Now, having lived most of their lives abroad, I believe they feel like citizens of the world, but enriched by their multi-cultural and multi-national backgrounds.

As for keeping in touch with the news of the Philippines, I do have the opportunity through my friends who live there and who keep me informed of the current political events and new developments. I always read with great interest all the news I find in the press or see on television.

My wishes for the Philippines are that people live in peace, prosper and continue to live by the democratic principles and succeed in all their aspirations both at home and in the global arena.

In the tradition of this year’s Miss People’s Republic of China, Bing Li, I’d like to make the following apologies:

First, to Henrique, Ed, and Marcio of Global Beauties: Sorry for failing to post my annual “homestretch” review for this pageant. Work commitments, physical exhaustion, and illness have prevented me from coming up with my review, even though I took the time to view the “You Decide” show.

Second, to all those expecting my choices for the Top 10 for this pageant: I am sorry for not being able to provide the list for the reasons mentioned above, plus the fact that my home computer has been acting up and breaking down – so I cannot connect to the net to post my Top 10 the eve before the pageant. Anyway, better late than never, these were my choices for the Top 10 based on my impressions of their photos, buzz, and the “You Decide” show: Aruba, Ukraine, Chile, South Africa, Venezuela, United States, China, Tanzania, Thailand, and Nigeria.

Yugoslavia was in my “shortlist” along with Bolivia, Australia, Brazil, Croatia, Nicaragua, Switzerland, India, Lebanon, and Spain. Russia and Scotland were in my list of possibilities along with so many others. Six out of 10 of my Top 10 list made it, plus two of my shortlist and the other two were included in my possibilities list.

My predictions this year were a major improvement from last year (see the Global Beauties coverage of last year’s Miss World to check my predictions), where only two of my Top Ten list made it (India and Turkey, by the way), plus only one in my shortlist (United States), and the rest except for Ukraine (who I failed to list even though I had a good regard for her) were in my possibilities list. I think seeing the “You Decide” show helped me get a better batting average this time and helped me weed out the hype.

I hope all of you will accept my apologies.

Now, let’s proceed to the review of this year’s Miss World 2001.

This is the first year of the Miss World wherein Julia Morley was completely at the helm, and she wasted no time developing some new innovations, namely:

1. Part of the criteria for selecting the Top 10 will be based on telephone votes by the general public around the world.
2. There will be a pre-pageant show shown to audiences around the world called “You Decide”;
3. There will be a running tally of the leaders known as a “leaderboard” during the broadcast of the pageant coronation night.
4. There are new special awards like a “Miss Talent” and a scholarship award.

I was expecting there will be a “Top Model” award, but apparently that didn’t push through. Anyway, these innovations provided much needed excitement to the proceedings. On a minor note, Julia likewise put her own spin on the announcement of the winners, varying a bit her late husband’s famous lines (repeat after me): “As is customary I shall announce the results in reverse order.” This lady is now definitely in complete command of the pageant.

It was a wise move for Miss World to be held at Sun City again. Sun City provided a venue that combined glamour with hip modernity, and the vast stage reflected that. It looked like a pageant held in this millennium, instead of the early 1970s vibe that permeated last year’s pageant. Another wise move was to allow Jerry Springer to host again, along with a former Miss World 1st runner-up – Claire Smith, who represented the United Kingdom in 1992 – to act as backstage commentator.

Jerry Springer fortunately toned down his famously off-color jokes for the occasion, and it worked to this pageant’s benefit. Claire Smith proved to be extremely competent as a backstage commentator; she’s very considerate to the girls, even with the time restraint – take that, Rebecca de Alba! I wouldn’t mind seeing Jerry and Claire do this gig for five to ten more years – maybe even beyond. The new male voiceover was likewise topnotch, though unlike the very cheeky British accents of the previous two voiceovers, this one has a standard American accent – he reminds me of those voiceovers we hear in 1940s and 1950s newsreels, with the same amount of observational humor as his British counterparts (“Queen of Karate” for Miss Yugoslavia, for instance).

Originally, the entertainment was to be provided by international-caliber recording artists like what they have done in the past three editions. This year, it was supposed to be Diana Ross doing an opening number (I bet she would have done “I’m Coming Out” – they usually put “veteran” artists as an opening act; Errol Brown of Hot Chocolate in 1998, Robert Palmer in 1999 and Bryan Ferry in 2000) and Abba-esque British pop quintet Steps performing somewhere in between.

I think the events of September 11 prevented the slated entertainers from going, so they relied on local talent instead. Fortunately, the use of (presumably less expensive) local talent turned out to be a stroke of genius, as the audience around the world was treated to a showcase of South African cultural pride, what with the stunning “Umoja” opening number, and the Mary J. Blige-esque vocal stylings of Lebo Makossa (the bleach-blonde black girl), who likewise danced up a storm in the two numbers she performed. I especially dug the “Try A Little Tenderness” number, where Lebo duetted with Loiso and it climaxed with a gospel choir. If there was any quibble in the entertainment, it’s basically about Lebo’s first number – I think the leather get-up doesn’t seem to match with the Latin stylings of her number. Lebo redeemed herself in the “Try A Little Tenderness” number with her red dress.

All in all, the entire Miss World presentation was near flawless and top-notch. But of course, there will always be quibbles, and here are mine – and let me note, these are really very, very minor and I’m sure easy-to-do for the next edition.

1. For the “Leaderboard”, I think the first batch was at a disadvantage, as we all see the near “cellar-dwellers” in that batch – so surprising to see Mz. Australia, Brazil and Croatia near the bottom of the Top 10, beaten by Mz. Argentina, American Virgin Islands and Angola. Miss Argentina was overrated, in my opinion, while Angola and American Virgin Islands were pleasant surprises. I think viewers from the other batches would also like to know how their countries fared even if they belong to the later batches. And I think it can demoralize some delegates when the leaders are announced in front of them like that. Here’s my suggestion: how about simply announcing the Top 5 of each batch of delegates (preferably without the delegates’ hearing the results) and do without the progressive Top 10 “Leaderboard”. This can still create added suspense during the announcement of the Top 10.

2. Corollary to the “Leaderboard” issue, although Jerry Springer claims that the order was random, the semifinalist announcement was actually based on rank, with Miss Nigeria in 1st place (ergo, called 1st) and Miss South Africa in 10th place (ergo, called 10th). I think we need to preserve the randomness of the announcement, so mix up the order of the Top 10 next time. Fortunately, though, there was still a major shakeup in the standings with the semifinal interview playing a major part, so this gaffe was forgivable.

3. I wish the Miss World Organization should have the foresight to even the timing and the number of questions asked to each semi-finalist. They should have standardized the format that Jerry will ask two questions to each semifinalist, with or without translators on hand. As it was, Jerry took his sweet time with the first half, then rushed through his questions with the second half.

The selection of the Top 10 was an exemplary bunch – not satisfactory, like last year, but truly exemplary. It’s surprising to see the early bettors’ favorites like Mz. USA, India, Venezuela, Chile and Brazil fail to make the cut, and I don’t think they’re mediocre delegates at all. Those who made the cut truly deserved to be there, and I have no questions at all with their selection (well, maybe one – I think the articulate Miss Thailand would have been a better choice than Miss People’s Republic of China, but the latter was stunning nevertheless and a worthy Top 10-er).

Miss Universe 2002 Review: A Return To The Classics: Visions Of The Fairest Maidens In White

The title of my review has three key words: Classic, Fair, and White… These terms seem to be very apt in depicting the telecast and the outcome of this year’s Miss Universe pageant. And what makes the experience of watching this pageant richer is how the various contexts of these terms came into play…

A WELCOME RETURN TO THE CLASSICS

Guy-Rex (who was tapped to handle the production of this pageant) is not the only comeback in this year’s pageant. Many beloved elements that pageant fans missed have made a welcome comeback, to wit:

1. “Say My Name”. After muzzling their voices in 1998, all the delegates finally get to introduce themselves again. Sure, it’s a simple mention of their name and their country (without any description), but it’s still a wonderful development – having them describe their country like “from the land of blah-blah-blah…” might seem too dated, too perky, and too time-consuming, hence it’s eschewed for simplicity.

2. Party-Vibe Opening Number. The opening sequence hearkens back to the pageants of the 1980s, where the delegates are in their costumes partying in the streets. Although this time they do not go up the stage like in those years, it’s still a welcome comeback.

3. Semifinalists’ Voices. Since the year 2000, we don’t have the opportunity to hear the semifinalists who did not make in the Top 5. I’m sure the Donald and company are adamant to retain the “looks-only” format of the semifinal round, but a satisfying compromise came when the non-competition “fashion walk” (initiated in 2000, cancelled in 2001, and revived again) now features vidclips of the semifinalists and the semifinalists introducing themselves in-depth. If you retain the looks-only semifinals format for years to come, retain this year’s semifinalist voice-overs, too.

4. Competent Hosting. Daisy Fuentes is a gem, even better than her stint in Namibia 1995. I hope we can see her in many more years. Phil Simms, well, he made a big boo-boo in the final question round (thanks to the initiative of the other finalists, who proceeded to walk to their earphones, he realized his boo-boo and fixed it), but in general he’s a more competent host than many male hosts that were hired at this event in previous years.

5. Focus on the Beauties, not the Entertainment. Finally, the focus is back where it belongs: the beautiful delegates of the pageant, not the extras. Trump & Co. has finally realized that the Miss Universe Pageant is about the delegates who competed in this pageant, not the extraneous elements like the intermission numbers (like Ricky Martin last year, for instance). Marc Anthony, though, gave a couple of great performances, and his live version of the hit “You Sang To Me” has a more palpable vibe than the original recording conveyed. I’ve heard rumors that he clashed with the organizers as he wanted to sing a song in Spanish. I think they should’ve let him, because it would give it a more Puerto Rican flavor.

6. Focus on the Beauties, Part 2. This is not related to the finals telecast, but I just have to send my compliments to the Miss Universe website, as it featured delegates’ interviews on video, and video captures of their presentation show. This is a big, big improvement over previous coverages, and I hope it would be maintained in subsequent years. The delegates have voices, have views that have to be heard, and it’s wonderful that we get the opportunity to hear them in depth, finally. Not many of us have the Quicktime Player required to view them, but I am willing to part with my income to spend time in an internet café with one and download all of them…

There are also some parallelisms I observed between this pageant with the 1989 Cancun pageant won by Holland’s Angela Visser, such as:

1. Commanding Lead. In both cases, the winner has a commanding lead over the rest of the competition. Angela led over her closest competitor by almost 0.5 points, while Oxana led by a commanding 0.7 points. The usual lead by the leader over her closest competitor was about 0.2 points or less.

2. Germany-by-way-of… In both cases, Germany made the semis. The German representative landed in 6th place, barely missing the Magic Five. And, the German representative was neither born nor raised in the country she represented. 1989’s Andrea Stelzer was originally from South Africa (and attempted to compete in Miss U 1985 as Miss South Africa, but was prevented to do so). This year’s Natascha Börger was originally from Venezuela.

3. Beauty in the Highest Extreme. Angela Visser was adjudged by Global Beauties as the Most Beautiful Miss Universe in the last 50 years. Apparently, with this year’s winner, that title seems to be under threat, as this year’s winner has a lot of pageant aficionados and non-pageant watchers enraptured by her beauty (I’m one of them).

VISIONS OF THE FAIREST MAIDENS

This year has featured a bevy of superbly stunning ladies of all shapes, sizes, and yes, colors. When I refer to the “fairest maidens”, I refer to their physical beauty, not their complexions. It’s inevitable that several stunners would be unfairly shut out, because there are simply too many of them this year. It definitely did happen this year.

Michael Jackson’s song “Black or White” seems to be a perfect theme for this year’s pageant. I admit that I am one of the instigators of the hype of “El Año de las Negras Latinas” and “El Año de las Bellezas Negras”. Simply because I am in awe with the stunning black delegates out there. And on top of that, there are more delegates of color this year than we had in the past, many of them coming from countries that are not necessarily known for having significant populations with colored people, or having crowned delegates of color before. They all deserve our respect and our high regard.

Of course the outcome turned out to be the opposite… there wasn’t a single dark-skinned delegate selected for the semifinals this year (the two Indians and one Chinese lady who made it are fair-skinned). Uh-oh, I can hear Survivor: Marquesas’ Sean Rector ranting about the outcome: “What?! No phyne black sistahs in there?! Why are they always puttin’ down the black race?!” In my opinion, perhaps bubbling under the Top 10 are the dark ladies. I can imagine an alternative Top 10 featuring delegates of color. Who shall I include in this “alternative” Top 10? Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Curacao, Ghana, Nigeria, Colombia, U S A, Cayman Islands, Honduras, and Kenya.

Now, with the outcome known, was the decision of the preliminary panel fair? Though personally, I wish that they include one or two (or maybe even three or four) delegates of color in the Top 10, I am actually very pleased with the official results – every one of the semifinalists deserve to belong there.

Of course, I should end this section of my review by noting that in most Miss Universe pageants, the prettiest, most physically stunning delegate rarely wins. This year is the rare exception. Indeed, the fairest maiden won.

MAIDENS IN WHITE

White is the dominant color in this year’s pageant, and I’m not even referring to the complexion of the delegates who made the cut. We of course know about the “White Party” (officially the “Make-A-Wish Fundraiser” ball) held earlier in the delegates’ stay. Then, the color of the gowns of the five finalists are white, plus Miss Cyprus. Only Miss Germany got away with a high score wearing a non-white gown (she wore pink, and garnered 4th place in this portion). So, what’s the color of the competition swimsuits: you guessed it, white. Oddly enough, in the semifinal swimsuit round, the non-finalists paraded in their black swimsuits. Oooh, Michael Jackson’s song is playing again: “It’s black / It’s white / It’s tough for you to get on (yeah-yeah-yeah)…”

One might wonder – Miss India wore a black gown this year (it resembles the famous Elie Saab worn by Halle Berry in this year’s Oscars, except that it has a satin shawl), and she got the lowest score among the semifinalists. Is it because the gown is colored black, is it because the final panel of judges are tired of gowns following Oscar patterns, or is it just all a mere coincidence? Discuss amongst yourselves.

DELEGATES REVIEWS

I’ve already mentioned about the high quality of this year’s batch. Before I proceed with my usual review of the semifinalists, I will give my citations on the non-finalists who received significant airtime during the telecast:

• Miss Kenya citing herself five times when asked who she thinks deserve to be in the finals. I’m sure she meant that in jest instead of saying that out of any form of egotism.

• Miss Bolivia wore a different gown in the finals other than that fiasco at the presentation show. I think she should have worn the gown on the telecast in the presentation show, as it would probably have improved her standing.
• Miss Ireland gave bubbly greetings to her folks back home. We Pinoys can relate to that sentiment.

• Miss Philippines, Miss Ecuador, Miss Netherlands, Miss US Virgin Islands, and Miss Jamaica graciously and happily previewing the new crown with Daisy Fuentes.

• Mz. Singapore, Namibia and Northern Marianas for their intelligent and lively discussion on the status of women in their countries. Miss Singapore of course stands out here – she’s a lawyer, you know.

• When the delegates are polled on who they thought was the most athletic, the answer is obvious: Miss USA.

• Last year’s Miss South Africa, Jo-Ann Strauss can now turn over her title as the Non-Semifinalist With The Most Airtime Award to: Miss USA, Shauntay Hinton. She gets interviewed twice, first in the panel discussion about their local pageants, and then about staying fit. In my opinion, comparisons to Halle Berry are justified not only because of her hairdo, but also because of her speaking voice. Definitely a great personality – it’s such a shame reports have it that she was so disappointed about not making the Top 10 that skipped the coronation ball and did not walk with the other losing delegates in the semifinal swimsuit and gown rounds.

• In contrast, apparently there is no one to succeed last year’s Miss Panama Ivette Cordovez for the Losing Delegate Desperate for Airtime Award, as we don’t see any losing delegate jumping about and bandying her sash before the cameras. This year’s batch seemed relatively well-behaved.

The selection of the Top 10 turned out to be surprising, yet superb, group. I got five of my choices in the actual Top 10, but if you extend my list to my 27 possible choices, my batting average is a very good 8/10. Not-so-flattering photographs in the presentation show made me overlook Miss Albania, and to a lesser extent Miss Cyprus. Miss Cyprus, though, was bubbling under in my book. I’m actually glad that USA and Puerto Rico gave way to these worthy choices. Definitely breaking the “Sash Factor” rule in this case.

It should also be noted that this year’s semis features the interesting competition between a powerhouse country, and a powerhouse surrogate. For this year, the powerhouses that made the cut are India and Venezuela, and the powerhouse surrogates are Canada and Germany respectively. Some interesting coincidences, such as:

1. The powerhouse and powerhouse surrogate are ranked consecutively: Venezuela is 5th and Germany is 6th; and India is 9th, and Canada held up the rear in 10th place.

2. The powerhouse country likewise outranks the powerhouse surrogate this year.

Here's how it goes:

1. Swimsuit Competition: The 16 Semifinalists will compete in Swimsuit. Halimbawa ang Top 16 Semifinalists ay binubuo ng mga delegates mula sa:

Parang walang nagaganap na isang major international pageant.Bakit ito nangyayari?Sapat na nga ba ang mga info na ibinibigay sa mga pageant followers at mga pageant websites para sila ma-excite sa pageant na ito? 1. Stage Design

This is an international event so dapat lang na pagtuunan ng pansin at sapat na budget ang stage design ng Miss Earth. Miss Universe and Miss World are both outstanding in stage management. Since naungusan na ng Miss Earth ang Miss International, dapat lang na ang sinusundang standard ng Miss Earth ay ang pagpantay o paghigit sa Two Giants.

2. Finals Night Venue

In my opinion, may mas nararapat na venue para sa pagtatanghal sa Miss Earth Pageant kaysa UP Theatre. Like I said, this is an int'l event na ibini-broadcast worldwide kaya marapat lang na ang Finals Night ay isang Big Event din. Kapag nanonood tayo ng Miss Universe at Miss World at ang camera ay pumupunta (camera pan) sa audience ay siguradong malulula tayo. Di nga ba't marami ang na-impressed sa laki at lawak ng Impact Arena, ang venue ng Miss Universe 2005 sa Thailand?

3. Opening Number, Choreography, Musical Scoring, Camera Movements, Interpreters and Production Designs

Hinangaan ng marami ang unique na Opening video (Montage) ng Miss Earth, Pinaboran ang Opening Number nito noong 2004, Pinuri naman ang Musical Scoring sa kabuuan ng Miss Philippine-Earth 2002, Pinalakpakan ang Production design nito noong 2003, Habang patuloy namang pinapaboran ang mga top-notch interpreters sa Miss Earth. Marahil ang hinahanap natin para sa Miss Earth ay ang taong may passion sa Beauty Pageant. Iyon siguro ang kulang kay Mr. Manahan - himself is no fan of beauty pageants. Actually, mula Director hanggang Production Staff, dapat ang lahat ay may passion sa pageantry, nanonood ng mga beauty pageants at alam kung ano ang beauty pageants.

Kung iisipin ay ilang years na ring hinahawakan ni Direk Manahan ang Miss Earth Pageant pati na rin ang Miss Earth Philippines, isama pa natin ang ilang edition ng Binibining Pilipinas noong 90's na hinawakan na rin niya noong ang Binibining Pilipinas ay nasa ABS-CBN pa. Marahil ang nakikitang conflict ng mga fans ay ang pagkakaroon ng 'similarity' ng Miss Earth sa mga TV Variety Shows na idinederehe rin ni Direk Manahan sa ABS-CBN.

6. Judges

Tulad ng Miss Universe, Miss World at Miss International, ang Miss Earth ay hindi rin nakakaligtas mula sa mga kritiko pagdating sa paraan ng pagpili ng mga hurado.

Ang Miss Universe ay pinapansin sa pagkakaroon ng majority of Americans at Europeans at pagkawala ng mga Asians at Africans sa panel of judges.At ang Miss World naman ay sinasabing naiimpluwensiyahan ng mismong si Mrs. Morley ang resulta ng pageant sa pamamagitan ng pag-upo nito bilang Chairman of the board.

Samantala, ang Miss International naman ay hindi nalalayo sa Miss Earth. Kung ang Miss International ay ay binabatikos sa pag-upo ng majority ng mga japanese bilang mga hurado, ang Miss Earth naman ay pinupuna sa pagkakaroon nito ng majority ng mga Filipino sa panel of judges at ang pag-upo ng mga 'sponsors' bilang mga hurado.

Ganito ang way ng pag-presenta ng award sa Miss Universe: Ia-announce ang winner. Pupunta centerstage ang nanalo at aabutan ng crystal trophy. Fast-pacing. No sash. No envelope. Walang maraming presentors.

Sa Miss Earth naman ay ganito: Ia-announce ang winner. Pupunta centerstage ang nanalo. Palilibutan siya ng dalawa hanggang tatlong presentors (o higit pa). May magsasabit ng sash (na kung minsan ay baligtad), Ida-dagdag ang bulaklak, ang plaque, ang envelope, etc. hanggang sa tuluyang matabunan ng mga bagay na ito ang mismong awardee (na very 80's ang dating). And worst, nagagamit ang mahabang minuto sa ganitong klaseng pag-present ng award.

8. Beauty for a Cause

Noong 2003, nang tanggapin ng kontobersiyal beauty na si Vida Samadzai (ng Afghanistan) ang award na ito, we thought, magiging isang tradition na ito ng Miss Earth. Pero last year missing na ang special award na ito.But just in case na muling ibalik ito this year, may suggestion po ako:

Before Finals Night, ang Miss Earth Organization ay pipili ng 5 nominees para sa Beauty for a Cause Award. Ang criteria: Mga activities, foundations, charity works, social works at environmental contributions na nagawa, na-itinayo o nai-contribute ng mga ito sa kanilang bansa o sa pangkalahatan.

Lahat ng candidates ay eligible para sa award pero ang 5 na may pinakamalaki o pinaka malawak na nagawa o na-contribute ayon sa criteria ang siya lamang mano-nominate. Bago ang Finals Night ay ilalabas na ang list of nominees at sa Finals Night ia-annonce ang winner ng Award.

9. Quantity

The more... the better, ika nga. Ang Miss Universe ay may 70+/80+ na participants habang 50+/60+ naman ang Miss International. Pinakamalaki ang Miss World na umaabot na sa100+ delegates.Ang Miss Earth ay nagsimula sa 60+candidates.

In future, we hope to see at least 80+/90+ participants but please NO to fictional country names at half-pinay kind of candidates (tulad na lamang ng half Filipina na si Shenevelle Dickson na nauna ng nagwagi bilang 2nd runner up sa Miss Filipino-Australia bago pa kinatawan ang Australia sa Miss Earth last year. Shenevelle placed among the Top 8 Finalists at lumikha ito ng protesta mula sa ilang pageant directors lalo na't less than a week before the grand final nag-participate sa contest ang pinay-australian beauty na ito.Maging ang half pinay na si Juliana Drossou na kumatawan sa bansang Greece noong Miss Earth 2002 ay pumasok ng semis at naging 3rd runner up (Miss Earth - Fire).

It seems like half-filipina representing OTHER nations really do well in this pageant at hindi kataka-taka na ganitong formula o pattern ang gagayahin ng ibang pageant directors para mag-succeed sa Miss Earth.

10. Quality

Miss Earth should attract top-notch ladies just like how Miss Universe and Miss World do. Sa Miss Universe at Miss World ay punumpuno ng mga de-kalidad na mga candidates. Dapat nating isipin na -fair man o hindi- ay dito nakasalalay ang quality ng pageant.

Last year, naging tampuhan ng tukso mula press at fans ang overweight beauty na si Simone Roethlisberger ng Switzerland, ang petite representative ng Portugal na si Frederica Santos at ang sana'y inaasahang top quality na candidate na kakatawan sa USA.

"The Worst in Swimsuit goes to Switzerland's Simone Roethlisberger. We don't want to sound harsh but Simone didn't obviously meet the requirements of the swimsuit competition. Yeah, she's beautiful in her own right but her national director should've sent her to the gym to workout & maintain her figure. This type of body is a no-no in a major pageant such as Miss Earth where the physical form of a woman is one of the vital parts of its judging system."

Maging ang mga Asian Countries na Japan At China ay hindi na rin nagpapahuli.Ang Miss Earth daw ay very non-traditional pagdating sa pagpili ng kanilang mga semi-finalists.

Sa Miss Universe, Miss World at Miss International ay very unlikely na mawala ang Venezuela, India, o USA sa semis. Sabi nga'y a pageant contest will not be the same without them. Madalas na kasalanan ito ng mga fans at pageant websites dahil na rin sa mataas na expectations o standards na ibinibigay ng mga ito sa mga tinaguriang pageant powerhouses. 12. When to be held?

Ano nga ba ang ideal date para sa staging ng Miss Earth? Masasabing malaking factor sa tagumpay ng Miss Universe ay ang attention na naibubuhos ng media, fans at mga pageant websites dito. Nangyayari ito dahil na rin sa walang iba pang malaking pageant event na sumasabay sa Miss Universe tuwing May/June. At ito rin ang nagsisilbing unang malaking pageant event na ginaganap sa taon.Factor din na 5-6 months ang pagitan nito sa Miss World na siyang huling malaking pageant event (December of previous year).

Nagkakaroon ng long break at nagbi-build up ito ng anticipation mula sa media, fans at pageant websites. Hindi tulad ng Miss Earth (October) na nakikipag-agawan ng attention sa Miss international (September) at Miss World (November/December).

Si Miriam Quiambao at Ang Huling 10 Taon ng mga Binibini

Hindi ko napanood ang Miss Universe 1999 noong nanalong First Runner-up si Miriam Quiambao sa Trinidad & Tobago. Nainis ako. Matapos kasi ang Miss Universe sa Manila noong 1994 ay wala akong naging palya sa panonood ng Miss Universe finals mula Windhoek, Namibia noong 1995 hanggang Honolulu, Hawaii noong 1998. Sa mga taong ito ay hindi pinalad makapasok sa Top 10 ang ating mga binibini. Pero kung kailan naman nanalo ang Pilipinas ng 2nd place noong 1999 ay saka naman hindi ko ito napanood.

Nakakainis talaga.

Naalala ko pa noon. Nasa frontpage ng ilang broadsheets ang larawan ni Miriam na kuha mula sa Presentation Show ng Miss Universe sa Chaguaramas. Naging maingay noon ang pagkadapa ni Miriam sa evening gown round ng Preliminary Competition. Maging sa column noon ni Ricky Lo sa Philippine Star ay laging may update kay Miriam. Sa Column na ito rin una kong nakita ang larawan ni Miriam suot ang Oscar Dela Renta swimsuit at talaga namang napahanga ako.

Kaya't ng manalo bilang 1st runner-up si Miriam at hindi ko napanood ang telecast nito ay talaga namang nainis ako.

Mula noon ay ayaw ko ng pumalya pa. Simula Miss Universe 2000 ay tumutok ulit ako. Baka sa susunod ay ang korona na ang masungkit ng Pilipinas. Ayaw ko ng mapag-iwanan pa.

Ang sumunod na 10 taon ng mga binibini sa Miss Universe, mula 2000 hanggang 2009, ay sampung taon din ng aking pagsubaybay at pagbibigay pagsuporta sa kanila. Ang kanilang laban ay siya rin naging aking pakikipaglaban. Ang kanilang mithiin ay siya rin naging aking pag-asa at pangarap.

Miss Universe 2000: Nicosia, Cyprus

Inabangan ko talaga ang telecast ng Miss Universe 2000 sa RPN9. Malakas at popular ang ating pambato - si Nina Ricci Alagao. Tulad ni Miriam, itinuturing din na strong contender si Nina Ricci. Inabangan ng marami ang tunggalian nila ni Miss India Lara Dutta.

Nabasa ko ang interview ni Nina Ricci sa kanyang profile sa official website ng Miss Universe. Matalino at palaban ang naging impression nito sa akin. Malakas ang personalidad niya.

Nainis ako sa sobrang delayed ng telecast ng Miss Universe 2000 sa RPN9. Paglipat ko sa Startalk sa GMA7 ay ibinalita ni Butch Francisco na hindi nakapasok si Nina sa Top 10. Nagkaroon ng phone patch kay Nina mula Cyprus at bakas sa boses nito ang pagkadismaya.

Tulad ni Nina Ricci ay nadismaya din ako.

Paglipat ko ulit sa RPN9 ay nagsisimula na ang telecast. At tulad ko ay tila nadismaya din ang dalawang anchorwomen na sina Ali Landry at Julia Moran sa di pagkakapasok nina Miss Philippines at Miss Germany.

Sa huli, ay kinoronohan ang sinasabing mahigpit na katunggali ni Nina Ricci - si Lara Dutta ng India.

Lalo akong nadismaya.

Matalino si Lara. Papalakpakan mo ang kaniyang talino at poise sa pagsagot. Pero sa panahon ng pag-aangkin sa kung sino nga ba ang tunay na reyna ng asya pagdating sa beauty pageants, nakakadismayang makita na maiwan si Miss Philippines habang kinokoronahan si Miss India.

Sana ay nanalo na lang noon si Miriam. Kahit papano sana ay nakita natin kung paano "ipinasa" ni Miss Philippines ang korona kay Miss India.

Miss Universe 2001: Bayamón, Puerto Rico

Ang Miss Universe 2001 batch ang isa sa mga pinaka-paborito kong grupo sa kasaysayan ng Miss U. Sa headshots pa lang ng mga delegates ay makikita mo na ang maraming standout beauties. Kaya't alam ko na hindi magiging madali ang kumpetisyon para sa ating binibini na si Zorayda Ruth Andam.

Sa taong ito una kong nakilala ang Global Beauties. Ang Globalbeauties.com ang sinasabing leading pageant website. Marami ng kwento ang nabuo, mula noon hanggang ngayon, tungkol sa relasyon ng Global Beauties at mga filipino pageant fans. Para silang dalawang bata na minsan ay magka-away at minsan naman ay magka-sundo.

Ang evening gown presentation ni Zora ay binigyan ng magandang review ng Global Beauties. Komento nga ng GB kay Miss Philippines matapos ang Presentation Show ay: "She's now a favorite!"

Pero hindi rin pinalad si Zora na makapasok sa Top 10.

Nakakapanghinayang lang dahil interesado akong malaman noon kung paano bibigyan ng score ni Dayanara Torres si Miss Philippines kung nakapasok ito sa finals. Si Dayanara Torres at ang dating asawang si Marc Anthony ay umupo noon bilang mga hurado sa finals ng Miss Universe 2001.

Naisip ko na baka malayo ang pwedeng narating ni Miss Philippines sa mga kamay ng dating itinuturing na Dancing Queen ng Pilipinas.

Miss Universe 2002: San Juan, Puerto Rico

Kahit na mas pinaboran ko si Katherine Anne Manalo noon sa Bb. Pilipinas 2002, nakita ko naman ang tila kakaibang dating ni Karen Loren Agustin na nagi-standout sa marami.

Sa Miss Universe 2002, kumpara Miss Universe 2001, ay wala akong masyadong naging mga "sentimental" favorites, kaya't todo talaga ang naging cheer ko para kay Miss Philippines.

Ang Miss Universe 2002 Fashion Show ang pinaka-paborito ko sa mga naging Fashion Show series ng Miss Universe. pero hindi masyado pumabor sa akin ang performance dito ni Karen. Sa Preliminary Competition ay nagpapansin at pinag-usapan naman ang kaniyang infamous red gown.

Sa finals night ay hindi muling pinalad si Miss Philippines na makapasok sa semis. Hindi yata napansin ng mga preliminary judges ang kakaibang karisma ni Karen.

Miss Universe 2003: Panama City, Panama

Ang underdog beauty ng Pampanga na si Carla Gay Balingit ang kinoronahan bilang Bb. Pilipinas-Universe noong 2003. Ang pagkapanalo ni Carla sa local pageant ay umani ng iba't ibang reaksyon mula sa ilang pinoy pageant fans. Sa interview ng Global Beauties Kay Carla sa Panama City ay binuhos ni Carla ang kaniyang sentemyento sa tila pagbibigay higit pansin ng mga fans sa mga mestizas pagdating sa mga beauty pageants.

Naging memorable sa akin ang evening gown presentation ni Carla sa preliminary competition ng Miss Universe 2003. Pinuri ng pageant website na Tom's Page of Miss Universe Mania ang kaniyang presentation at ibinilang si Carla sa mga favorites. Samantalang pinuna naman ng Global Beauties at sinabing tila pang-1980's relic ang necklace na isinuot ni Carla na ipinagtanggol naman ng pinoy pageant critic na si Joseph Vitug.

Sa taong ito, mula 10, ay itinaas sa 15 ng Miss Universe Organization (MUO) ang bilang ng mga semifinalists. Ganunpaman, tila naging mailap pa rin ang korona kay Miss Philippines dahil hindi pa rin ito pinalad na mapabilang sa finals.

Miss Universe 2004: Quito, Ecuador

Isa ng international beauty titlist si Maricar Balagtas bago pa man siya sumabak sa Miss Universe. Si Maricar ay kinoronahan bilang Miss Globe International sa Istanbul, Turkey noong 2001.

Maganda ang mga naging review ng mga kritiko sa evening gown presentation ni Maricar sa Preliminaries ng Miss U. Ang experience ni Maricar sa Turkey ay nakatulong upang maging polished at solid ang kaniyang performance. Umaagaw-pansin din ang Pintados national costume ni Maricar na tila iniiwasan naman mahagip ng mga camera sa Miss Universe 2004 telecast.

Hindi nakapasok si Miss Philippines sa semifinals haabang kinoronahan naman si Jennifer Hawkins ng Australia bilang bagong Miss Universe. Ang imahe ni Jennifer Hawkins - at Amelia vega ng nakaraang taon - ang pagbibigay senyales ng MUO sa pagbihis sa pageant patty looks ng isang typical na beauty queen at pagyakap sa makabagong larawan ng isang Miss Universe.

Miss Universe 2005-2007: From Thailand to Los Angeles & Mexico

Paborito ko ang edition ng Miss Universe sa Thailand noong 2005. Mayaman at makulay ang kultura ng Thailand na bagay na lalong nagpatingkad sa prestihiyosong Miss Universe. Ang introduction ng mga candidates mula sa iba't ibang scenery ng Thailand at ang maigsi ngunit nakakasindak na opening dance number nito - ay perpekto para sa akin. Pero higit sa production at cultural values at mga higanteng elepante ng Bangkok ay mas inabangan ko ang magiging kapalaran ng Miss Philippines na si Gionna Cabrera.

Ilang oras bago ang Miss Universe 2005 finals ay may lumabas na "leakage" sa internet ng umano'y kopya ng Top 15 Semifinalists. Sa listahang ito ay napabilang ang pangalan ni Gionna. Ngunit matapos ang Miss Universe 2005 at makoronahan bilang bagong Miss Universe si Natalie Glebova ng Canada ay walang Miss Philippines na nakalusot sa Semi Finals.

Sa sumunod na 2 taon, hindi pa rin pinalad na makapasok sa finals sina Lia Andrea Ramos (kahit na umabot sa 20 ang bilang ng semifinalists) sa Miss Universe 2006 sa Los Angeles, California at Anna Theresa Licaros (na tinalo ng nagbabadyang bagong powerhouse ng Asya - Si Miss Japan) sa Miss Universe 2007 sa Mexico City, Mexico.

Sa mga taong ito, mula 2005 hanggang 2007, hindi man pinalad na maiuwi ang korona o makapasok sa semifinals ay napagwagian naman nina Gionna, Lia at Theresa ang Miss Photogenic Awards sa Miss Universe. Ang Miss Photogenic o ang online voting ang tila naging bahikulo ng mga pinoy pageant fans na muling mailagay si Miss Philippines sa gitna ng entablado ng Miss Universe - ilang taon matapos ang glorya ni Miriam Quiambao.

Miss Universe 2008: Nha Trang, Vietnam

Inabangan ko ang transformation ni Jennifer Barrientos mula sa kaniyang koronasyon sa Bb. Pilipinas Pageant hanggang sa paglapag niya sa Vietnam bilang si Miss Philippines. Sa umpisa pa lang ay naisip ko ng tila hindi magiging madali para sa pinay "conservative" looks ni Jennifer ang umagaw-eksena sa panahong ang nagre-reyna sa Miss U ay ang mga imahe nina Amelia Vega, Jennifer Hawkins, Natalie Glebova at Zuleyka Rivera.

Sa Presentation Show ay pinuri ng mga fans ang agaw-pansing pagrampa ni Jennifer sa Swimsuit Competition habang pinuna naman ng marami ang colombian-designed gown na ipinarada niya sa Evening Gown presentation.

Sa panahong tila humihina ang popularidad ni Miss India - na siyang itinuturing na mortal na karibal ng mga pinay - ay siya namang unti-unting pag-agaw eksena ng mga asian beauties mula Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand at Japan.

Sa huli, iniwan nina Misses Vietnam at Japan sina Misses India at Philippines patungong Semifinals.

Dumarami na nga ang katunggali ng mga pinay sa Asya at siyam na taon na ngang hindi nararamdaman ang presence ng minsang tinaguriang pageant powerhouse ng asya sa Miss Universe - si Miss Philippines!

Miss Universe 2009: Nassau, Bahamas

Sa agawan ng Bb. Pilipinas-Universe title noong 2009 ay mas pinaboran ko si Marie-Ann Umali kaysa kay Pamela Bianca Manalo. Alam nating mas napapansin ang mga "asian looks" sa Miss World kumpara sa Miss Universe ni Donald Trump. Para sa akin, ang chinita feature ni Bianca ay tila mas perpekto para sa Queen of Asia & Oceania title sa Miss World.

Pero sadyang may taglay na karisma si Bianca. Mula sa kaniyang arrival sa Nassau hanggang sa Preliminary Competition ay naging kapansin-pansin ang kaniyang bubbly personality. Madali niyang nakuha ang simpatiya ng mga fans at naging paborito among asia delegates.

Tulad ni Jennifer Barrientos, binatikos din ng ilang fans ang colombian designed-gown ni Bianca sa Preliminaries at sinabing humila pababa sa magandang performance ni Bianca sa Swimsuit Competition.

Habang nirarampa ni Miss Japan ang mga gowns ni Gucci, si Miss Philippines ay tila nakatali na kay Barraza. Habang sumusubok maging mapangahas ni Ines Ligron sa mga evening gowns ni Miss Japan ay tila nakuntento na tayo sa mga "Hit or Misses" designs ng Colombian designer na si Alfredo Barraza.

Hindi man pinalad na makapasok sa semis at maputol ang 10 taong "drought" ng Pilipinas sa Miss Universe, ay naging instant favorite ko naman si Bianca. Standout para sa akin ang pagiging "kikay" at bubbly personality niya. Si Bianca ay hindi nakakakahon at hindi isang stereotype na Beauty Queen. Hindi ko man siya naging top favorite noon sa Bb. Pilipinas ay maituturing ko naman siya bilang isa sa mga paborito kong Bb. Pilipinas-Universe winners.

Fast-Forward:

Napagwagian na ng pinay ang ikatlong korona sa Miss International (Precious Lara Quigaman) at ilang ulit na rin nating pinasok ang Top 5 ng Miss World (Mafae Yunon at Karla Bautista) sa nakaraang 10 taon. Pero bakit tila naging mailap sa atin ang Miss Universe?

Nagpalit korona na ang Miss Universe at kasabay nito ang tila pagpapalit larawan ng isang Miss Universe. Mula sa isang imahe ng isang konserbatibo at intelihenteng Beauty Queen - si Miss Universe ay larawan na ng kasalukuyang kababaihan - supermodel, brave and bold.

Ngunit sa gitna ng mga pagbabagong ito, si Miss Philippines ay tila hindi na nakawala sa iba't iba at walang katapusang mga isyu. Mula sa usapin ng tamang criteria sa pagpili ng Bb. 1993, nanalo bilang 2nd Princess si Ruffa Gutierrez sa Miss World Pageant sa South Africa. Nasa elementary ako 'nun at wala pang masyadong muwang sa mundo ng beauty pageants. Hindi ko masyado napanood ang telecast noon at halos patapos na ng maabutan ko.

Ganun pala ang pakiramdam, kakabahan ka rin pala. Iba pala kapag nakikita mo ang "Philippines" sa mga international contest. Hindi nga nagtagal at hinirang sina Misses Philippines at South Africa bilang runners up at si Miss Jamaica naman bilang Miss World. Naalala ko, tuwang tuwa lola ko nun at talagang inaway away pa sina Miss Jamaica at Miss South Africa dahil di hamak naman daw na mas maganda pa si Ruffa Gutierrez sa dalawa. Sa kulay pa lang ay talbog na sila. Kung di ninyo alam e mga dark beauties po ang dalawang tumalo kay Miss Philippines (tingnan po ang larawan sa ibaba).

Dati kung hindi bahay-bahayan o tagu-taguan ay naglalaro kaming mga bata ng Little Miss Philippines ng Eat Bulaga. May isang tatayo sa amin na gaganap bilang host habang ang iba naman ay magtutunggali bilang mga contestants. Kadalasan walang gustong maging host, lahat ay gusto na maging contestants.

Gamit ang mga kumot o anumang mga tela o plastic na makita namin ay gumagawa kami ng kani-kaniya naming gown at tulad ng tunay na Little Miss Philippines sa tv ay nagsisimula kami sa pagpapakilala kasunod ang talent portion kung saan tulad ng sa tv ay mayroong kumakanta (na suklay ang mikropono), sumasayaw at tumutula. Pagdating naman sa question-and-answer portion ay kami kami na lang ang nagtatanungan.

Wala kaming hurado. Wala ngang gusto na maging host lang, hurado pa kaya? Saka sigurado ako na away-bata lang ang magiging ending namin kung may magkamali ng pili ang tatayong hurado. Kaya madalas ay dinadaan na lang namin sa usapan ang lahat: ako ang mananalo ngayon at siya naman bukas habang ang iba naman ay sa mga susunod na laro na lang. Lahat kami winners ika nga.

Pero matapos ang Miss World ay namulat ako sa mas exciting na mundo ng beauty pageants. Ayaw ko ng maglaro ng Little Miss Philippines. Miss World na lang. Matapos makumbinsi ay pumayag naman ang mga kalaro ko. Mula sa mga pinagdikit-dikit na papel ay nakagawa kami ng mga kaniya-kaniya naming sash at dahil ako naman ang pasimuno ng lahat, ako na rin ang nagmagaling na mag-designate ng mga "country" namin. Dahil sampu kaming lahat na maglalaro, ito ang mga inilagay ko sa sash namin:

Miss South Africa
Miss Jamaica
Miss Valenzuela
Miss Japan
Miss California
Miss New York
Miss Australia
Miss Brunei
Miss London

Inilagay ko ang mga "bansa" na malimit kong marinig sa telebisyon at mga usapang matanda noon. Wala akong masyadong alam sa mapa. Sa iskwela, ang itinuturo pa lang sa amin noon ay mga Region I hanggang Region.. ano na nga kasi yun? Ang South Africa at Jamaica naman ay nanggaling mismo sa naabutan ko sa panonood ng Miss World. Nagkamali pa ako sa spelling ng "Miss Philippines" dahil imbes na double 'P' ay double 'L' ang nailagay ko, kaya't galit na galit ang nagsuot ng sash na iyon dahil may naiwan pang bakas ng mga bura at dumi ang sash niya.

Wala namang kumontra sa mga isinulat ko sa sash namin. Yun nga lang ay muntik nang maiyak ng kalaro naming si Maita ng ipilit naming siya ang magsuot ng "Miss South Africa" sash. Si Maita ang pinaka-maitim sa aming lahat dahil na rin sa maitim ang pinagmanahan niya - ang kanyang tatay. Mga bata pa lang kami pero parang may discrimination na kaming nalalaman sa buhay o sadyang naniwala lang kami na lahat ng mga Miss South Africa at Miss Jamaica sa mundo ay "maiitim." Sa huli ay napapayag din namin si Maita. Bilang pakunswelo ay sinabi ko na lang na tingnan niya si Roda at di umaangal sa "Miss Jamaica" sash niya. Ang sagot niya: "diba siya naman ang tumalo kay Ruffa?"

Taong 1994 ng muling itanghal ang Miss Universe sa Pilipinas. Nauna na raw dalhin ang Miss Universe noong 1973 dito sa atin. Hindi pa ako ipinapanganak noon. Sa Miss Universe Manila ako nagsimula na maging ganap na fan ng mga beauty pageants. Di ko pinapalagpas panoorin noon ang mga trivia ng ABS-CBN para sa Miss Universe. Maging ang mga kaliwa't kanang guestings ng mga candidates sa mga tv shows ng dos ay nakatutok ako. Gandang ganda ako sa kanila.. lalo na pag suot nila ang kanilang mga sash.

May kung ano ang sash nila at naeengganyo ako.

Mula noon ay naging interesting na para sakin ang mga beauty pageants. Kasabay ng mga prestihiyoso at makukulay na mga pagtatanghal ay natutunan kong makilala at tanggapin ang iba't ibang kultura at kaugalian ng mga bansang lumalahok sa Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International at Miss Earth.

Higit sa lahat ay natutunan ko rin sa wakas ang mapa at ang heograpiya.

-Nalaman ko na hindi pala tama ang mga sash na ginawa ko noong bata ako. Ang California at Las Vegas ay hindi pala mga bansa kundi mga states ng Amerika. Ang mga representatives ng California at Las Vegas ay lumalahok sa taunang Miss USA Pageant at ang mananalo dito ay siyang kakatawan sa Miss Universe bilang si "Miss USA."

-Venezuela pala at hindi Valenzuela. Ang Valenzuela ay matatagpuan lang pala sa Metro Manila habang ang Venezuela naman ay makikita sa northern coast ng South America. Kung ikaw ay mula sa Venezuela, itinuturing kang beauty powerhouse sa mundo ng beauty pageants.

-Tulad ng California at Las Vegas, ang London ay hindi rin pala isang bansa kundi siyang capital naman ng England. Sa Miss Universe huli nating nakita si Miss England kasama sina Miss Scotland at Miss Wales ay noong 1990. Noong 1991 ay pinag-isa na lang ang mga British Isles bilang si "Miss United Kingdom." Mula 1992-2000 naman ay naging "Miss Great Britain" ito at muling ibinalik sa titulo bilang Miss United Kingdom noong 2005. Hanggang sa maging "Miss UK" na lang ito last year (2008).

-Natuklasan ko rin na hindi pala lahat ng ng Miss South Africa at Miss Jamaica ay "maiitim." Sina Claudia Henkel (South Africa) na naging semi-finalist sa Miss Universe 2005 at Christine Straw (Jamaica) na hinirang na Continental Queen of the Caribbean sa Miss World 1998 ay mga mapuputi naman.

-Wala palang "Miss Brunei" na lumalahok sa mga international beauty pageants. Konserbatibo ang pananaw ng mga kapatid nating Muslim pagdating sa mga beauty pageants. Sina Miss Indonesia-Universe 2005 Artika Sari Devi, Miss Indonesia-Universe 2006 Nadine Chandrawinata at Miss Afghanistan-Earth 2003 Vida Samadzai ay ilan lamang sa mga controversial figures na naharap sa isyu ng swimsuit at beauty pageants.

-Na ang mga lumalahok sa mga international beauty pageants ay nagmumula sa iba't ibang grupo o kontinente ng mundo. Sa Miss Universe noon ay magkahiwalay na ipinakikilala ang mga delegates mula sa Mediterranean, South America at North America. Habang sa Miss World naman ay may Caribbean group at iniisplit ang Europe sa Northern at Southern group.

Hindi rin maputi si Chelsi Smith, ang nanalong Miss Universe 1995, na na nagmula sa USA.

-Nalaman ko rin na napakarami palang salita o language sa mundo. Sa India lang, ayon kay Sushmita Sen ay maraming ginagamit na wika. Para maintindihan ng majority ng english viewers ay kumukuha ng interpreter ang mga non-english speaking candidates sa pagsagot sa kanilang question-and-answer portion. Nakakapagtaka lang na ang ibang latina beauties ay kailangan pa ng interpreter para maintindihan ang tanong gayung kapag sumagot naman sila ay sa ingles.

-Higit sa lahat, natutunan ko na ang pangalang ng bansang nakasulat sa sash ng isang contestant ay malaking factor para mapansin, makakuha ng atensyon at manalo. May magkaibang perception o pagtanggap ang mundo ng beauty pageants (halimbawa na lang) kay "Miss Venezuela" kaysa kay "Miss Ecuador."

Marami at iba-ibang bagay pa ang mga natututunan ko sa pagsusubaybay sa mga beauty contests. Hanggang ngayon ay malawak pa rin ang mga kaalaman na natutuklasan ko. Marami tayong mga kultura, kaugalian at kasaysayan na matututunan sa mundo ng beauty pageants maliban sa "world peace."

The quest for the fairest-of-them-all is on once again. The tropical heat of the impending summer is a perfect excuse to flaunt beautiful bodies. Contests abound, from the best-in-bikini contests to the prestigious Bb. Pilipinas, which just recently presented their candidates.

Many mothers, maybe with secret and unfulfilled dreams of being models or beauty queens themselves, love to see their teenage daughters walk the pageant or fashion runway.

We got hold of Lia Andrea Ramos, 2006 Bb. Pilipinas Universe and Ms. Photogenic winner in the Miss Universe pageant that year, to share her beauty contest experience and how it changed her life.

PHILIPPINE STAR: Was being a model and beauty queen ever part of your dream list when you were young?

LIA ANDREA RAMOS: Being a model and beauty queen was not on my dream list. When I was asked to join Binibini in 2001, I said no because I never imagined myself as a beauty queen. Five years later, I decided to give it a shot. When I won, the opportunity to become a model just happened and I found myself traveling to South Africa for my first full-time modeling stint. There are opportunities in life that you can’t allow to slip by. I don’t want to look back one day and regret not grabbing the opportunities that came my way.

What preparations did you do for the pageant?

Physically, I had to train at the gym and go on a strict and healthy diet. I wasn’t in my best shape because I didn’t really work out before that and I wasn’t engaged in any sports. I had to work out and I had a personal trainer working closely with me. I also had to learn to walk on three- to four-inch heels, know more about makeup, and polish my skills on public speaking.

Were you regularly working out even before you got into this beauty contest?

Unfortunately not. I have always been slim so I thought I didn’t need it, but I realized working out is not just about losing weight. It’s also about having a healthier body. And as one gets older, one’s metabolism slows down so it’s important to include working out in one’s fitness regimen.

What were your preparations during the Miss Universe competition?

I had a more rigorous training at the gym. I did weight training, Pilates and cardio-dance classes. John Cuay (personal trainer) and Cristy Marasigan (senior dietitian) from my gym helped me with my training and diet. I cut down on carbs and increased my protein intake. I ate more vegetables, fruits, and nuts. I stayed away from chips and chocolates.

What part of your body are you most proud of? Why?

I’d have to say my abs because I work very hard to keep it toned.

What part of your body needs further improvement?

Definitely my thighs. I have the tendency to put on weight there so I have to constantly work them out.

What is your fave gym exercise?

I enjoy my Pilates and boxing classes.

Do you follow any strict diet?

I used to when I was preparing for the pageant and modeling abroad. But now, I am more lax. I try to avoid eating my carbs at night, and I try to stick to my white meat and veggies. But sometimes, I grab some pizza and chips. I also love pasta!

How much sleep do you get every day?

On the average, eight hours. I feel tired or cranky when I get less.

Any vices?

I drink, but as I’ve grown older, I drink less.

Do you have cheat days when you don’t watch what you eat at all?

Any day can be a cheat day as long as you make up for it the following day at the gym.

What food cravings do you succumb to?

I love potato chips! I always have a stash at home.

What is your current fitness goal?

To lose some inches off my thighs and be very toned again.

What is your current regular exercise and diet regimen?

I go to the gym three to four times a week. I started boxing classes a month ago and I try to do that at least three times a week. I do Pilates class once a week. I regularly eat chicken, lean red meat, fish, and salad. For my carbs, I eat brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, and potato.

After winning the pageant, what other projects did you get into?

I worked as a model in Cape Town, South Africa where I did TV commercials and print jobs for the European, American, and South African markets. Recently, I finished some work for The Asia Foundation, an international NGO, on a human rights innovation marketplace project. I am also doing something exciting with Gold’s. We are setting up Estudio at Gold’s Gym, an academy that offers development programs on fitness and character development. We will be tapping certified gym trainers, nutritionists, life coaches, top models, former beauty queens, photographers, and stylists, among others, to handle the classes of Estudio (call Luisa Beltran at 994-2930 for details).

Do you believe that beauty is a total package?

Beauty is definitely a total package. It’s physical and inner beauty combined. Beauty is about exuding confidence, grace, charm, and intelligence. I find someone who carries herself well and comfortable in her own skin beautiful.

After about a decade in the Gulf, Samar-born Michael, a fine arts scholar of the University of the Philippines, is moving into the international limelight.

Most of my clients are women from the Gulf area. At first I had clients who had doubts about me because of my nationality. Monica Kanari was born in 1971 in Nairobi, Kenya. She grew up with a strong influence in fashion from her mother who was a tailor and had a Dressmaking business. In 2006 she won The Redds Fashion Awards, Kenya.

Monica is the only Kenyan fashion designer to win three International fashion awards, two before she did any professional training. In 2003, Monica visited Australia and had the opportunity to train under Tracy Seywell, a professional fashion designer, to enhance her skills.

Fashion is Monica Kanari’s passion. She is greatly inspired by our African Cultures,
especially the traditional dress of Kenya’s Maasai, Turkana, Pokot and Kikuyu and
more recently the newly designed Kenya National Dress. She is particularly known for her modern dress designs with an African flair. She has also become well known for her beautiful African bridal gowns and evening dresses. She gives traditional ornaments a very modern look.

Rebecca Stirm

Born and raised in Belize, self taught clothing designer, Rebecca Stirm, began sewing her own clothing at the age of 11. “My parents were very supportive; they saw potential in me and managed to get me Brother sewing machine on sale at ‘Courts’. Since I had been sewing by hand for a long time, I was eager to learn to use the machine. I cut apart old clothes to see how they were made, and cut and re-shaped old patterns to make them my size. I basically learnt to make patterns and sew them together through trial and error while sewing for myself as a preteen.”

Sketching designs and sewing were merely a hobby for her until 2009, when she was encouraged by a close friend to hold her first fashion show. In early 2010, she was given the opportunity to show a few dresses in a charity fashion show (Help for Haiti). Inspired by seeing her pieces on the runway for the first time, Rebecca created her first collection of day dresses and cocktail dresses - paying for the fabric and trimmings by working Friday nights playing the acoustic guitar and singing at a coffee house. Close friends and family pulled in to help Rebecca plan, advertise, and execute her first show. The “August Fashion Show” was a success- and she received her first orders for dresses from her collection.

Latvia

Natalija Jansone

Natalija Jansone is a well-known and recognised designer in Latvia. She has been invited to design for various stage shows and performances, to create advertising collections for different brands and has done styling for popular public places such as hotels, bars and restaurants. Her interest in Asian especially Korean culture comes through in her work – Natalija has studied the Korean language and tradition.

From 1985-1990 she studied at the Faculty of Eastern Philology at St Petersburg University and in 1994-1995 she extended her knowledge at Yonsenj Universitu, Seoul. 2005-2007 she has won a completion organised by the EU for European designers, the prize for which is the chance to participate in the exhibition “EU Gateway to Japan” and in 2005 she signed up the first order for clothes production so now her designs are not alone available in Latvia but also in Japan. This is why Natalija was nominated for “Eksporta gada balva 2006”

Wenxia Yu, China PR
I will sing a song called Luhua (flower) in the talent show. The song is composed by Yin Qing and He Dongjin. It is selected from the famous musical, A Soldier’s Diary and is about a girl desperately waiting for her lover – a soldier – to come back so they can be together forever.

Deanna Robins, Jamaica
I am performing modern and contemporary dance to Bob Marley’s Redemption Song. The dance is a reflection of the hardships overcome and the eventual deliverance felt by the Jamaican slaves as a result of their perseverance and subsequent freedom.

Karoline Owen, Norway
My talent is singing, and the song I’m going to sing is Autumn Leaves in the style of Eva Cassidy. This song holds a lot of meaning for me because it was my inspiration to start singing.

Maricely Gonzalez Pomares, Panama
Colors of the Wind reminds me of my childhood. When I was five years old my mother gave me a cassette with Disney songs and I wouldn’t stop singing - especially this song that shares such a beautiful message with the world.

Queneerich Rehman, Philippines
Beatboxing is a skill where a person uses their mouth and throat to produce different kinds of sounds – imitating certain beats and melodies. The first time I heard Justin Timberlake beatbox in his music video, Rock Your Body in 2003, I was so amazed and thrilled to learn it. Finally, I recorded it in my phone and listened to it over and over again until I learnt the basics. From then on, my beatboxing skills developed as I watched tutorials online, the rest was history.

China PR: Wenxia Yu of China PR glides onstage in a red gown with jewelled waist. Huge roar from the crowd. Her voice is high and lilting and fills every corner of the theatre. A poignant performance, her vocal range is incredible. she hits high notes with ease. it's awe inspiring and very accomplished.

Huge applause, the audience are simply in awe..

Jamaica: The familiar opening chords of Bob Marley's Redemption Song sound and Deanna Robins of Jamaica appears in a dazzling sequinned headband with a black leotard striped with the Jamaican national colours.

She is lithe and gazelle-like doing splits and moving so fluidly, plus the joy on her face is captivating. She moves between the stage floor and then arcs heavenward with a series of leaps. Though it's graceful it's also incredibly boisturous and fun and the audience are awestruck!

Norway: The gentle guitar intro of Autumn leaves begins and Karoline Owen of Norway crosses the stage. Her voice is soft but piercing and the way she plays round with the notes is astounding.

It's simply beautiful, the strength yet the fragility in her voice has the audience captivated.

Panama: Maricely Pomares of Panama takes the stage in a gorgeous gold and pink lame corset dress as the opening bars of Disney's Colors of the Wind are heard

She starts the song in English and her voice is clear and pure. As she hits the middle of the song - and some stunning high notes - she changes to Spanish. It's such a lovely touch and the audience really enjoy it.

Philippines: Now for something very unique, our first beat boxer with just a mike. Philippines, in a slinky black fringed catsuit sings the opening lines of a ballad and THEN.....

it sounds as if a drum machine has come on, but NO! it's her!! Drum beats, remixing noises, scratching and beeping noises! She does it all! The tempo picks up, everyone is astounded, they're going mad!! She breaks into Usher's Yeah! which goes down so well. She hits us with some actual drumrolls and drops her voice oto a growl. Jaws hit the floor and the crowd go wild!

The host invites her down to the crowd to teach some beatboxing to a lucky audience member! The crowd cheer as they perform a duet.

Miss World 2012 Designer's Dress: Red Alert!

It is very interesting to take a look at Chinese fashion specially their choice of color. Red can’t go wrong in China. The 2012 Miss World Designer Award Competition held in Ordos, Inner Mongolia China has actually lots of red dresses: elegant, stunning and powerful!

BARBADOS
Marielle Eoen Wilkie

A luxurious, one shoulder, floor length gown with flowing train. The beautifully handcrafted bodice is made of delicately ruched black polysilk which is adorned with hibiscus flowers of embroidered ribbon. The flowers are further accentuated with red gems and sequins. A jewel encrusted asymmetrical strap stretches diagonally across the chest, whilst gauzy tulle cascades in gentle waves over the shimmery red sequin skirt which flows off into beautiful sweeping train.

How to help fast-track Miss World Philippines’ chances in China finals

There is a new way for Filipinos to support 2012 Miss World Philippines Queeneerich Rehman in her quest to become the country’s first Miss World titleholder.

During her visit to the Inquirer office in Makati City last Friday, the 5’8” Pakistani-Filipino stunner said the global pageant will introduce a new “fast-track” method to advance to the competition this year—the Multimedia award.

Miss World holds fast-track competitions where the winners get closer to the coveted international title by gaining extra points. Previous years’ editions had the Beach Beauty, Top Model, Sports, Talent and Beauty with a Purpose segments.

For the Multimedia award, each contestant will have a section in the Miss World website (www.missworld.com) where they can upload photos and videos to update fans. Contestants can also use various social networking sites to generate support. “Malakas ang laban natin, since the Philippines is the ‘Facebook capital of the world,’” the 23-year-old Rehman told Inquirer.

Rehman will need all the support she can get, especially since the Miss World finals will be held in China, which is embroiled in a territorial dispute with the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea.

Despite the political tension between the two governments, however, Rehman maintains a positive outlook. “Whatever the controversy is between China and the Philippines, I’ll try my best to be friendly and to be sociable. I’m taking Mandarin lessons so I can impress the Chinese people,” she said.

But Rehman won’t rely solely on fan votes to bag the elusive title. Since her coronation as Miss World Philippines last June 24, she has been busy training for the big league.

“Aside from Mandarin lessons, I also did catwalk training and went to the gym. I also trained for the talent portion and the cultural dance segment,” she said. “I’m going to do beatboxing for the talent. And for the cultural dance, I’m going to perform an Igorot dance,” she added.

For the Beauty with a Purpose competition, Rehman said she will present the plight of children with hydrocephalus. She has already donated part of her P1-million cash prize to the Philippine General Hospital for the treatment of children afflicted with the disease.

No Filipino woman has won in Miss World’s 61-year history. The closest the Philippines has ever gotten to the title were Gwendoline Ruais’ second place finish last year and Evangeline Pascual’s first runner-up in 1973. Actress Ruffa Gutierrez finished third in 1993.

“I invite all Filipinos to ‘like’ the Miss World Philippines official Facebook fanpage,” Rehman appealed. “It’s the one with the Miss World Philippines logo as the profile picture,” she noted.

Rehman left for China last July 18. The 2012 Miss World coronation night will take place in Ordos, Inner Mongolia in China on Aug. 18. TV5 will broadcast the international pageant live.
