Bogert Park, Bozeman

10k and 5k

9 years running! Trot along a scenic 10k or 5k course through Bozeman, MT. Drop and do pushups before the race to deduct time from your run. Dogs welcome at the run! We have excellent prizes for people and pooches. Dress in purple to kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.  All proceeds from the run benefit HAVEN’s victim services.

Where: Bogert Park, Bozeman

Push-ups begin at 8:30am, 5k starts at 9:00am, 10k at9:05am.

How: Registration is open online at www.active.com under “Drop and Trot”
Participants can register the day of the race until 8:30am at Bogert Park.  Online registration ends September 23, 2010.

HAVEN participates in DVAM by Painting the Town Purple. For a few weeks in October, local supporting businesses use purple Christmas lights to decorate their windows. Many businesses use purple merchandise to create a themed window. By painting the town purple, we hope to raise awareness about domestic violence. Many other awareness raising events happen in October and HAVEN works with other organizations in Bozeman to plan and promote educational events for the community.

 HAVEN collaborates with police and other community responders in a group called the Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT), a collaborative organization of multiple disciplines working to provide the best comprehensive services to victims in a seamless and easy process. This group includes representatives from HAVEN, Bozeman and Belgrade Police Departments, Sheriff’s Department, MSU VOICE Center, MSU Police Department, Sexual Assault Counseling Center, City and County Prosecutors, Hearts and Homes, Probation and Parole Department, and Victim Services.  Each member of this eclectic group brings a different perspective to the community approach to domestic violence. The monthly meetings help to encourage collaboration and communication across services.  

 DVRT is currently working to evaluate and possibly change  police protocol for police response to domestic violence calls, and to include a trained HAVEN advocate on the initial call to support a victim immediately after an incident of violence.

 Thank you to the local police departments and the members of DVRT for collaborating with HAVEN on this important community issue.

People often ask “what is a healthy relationship?” It’s almost laughable that I, a 22 year old, with all of one serious relationship under my belt should be the one teaching others about healthy relationships. However, being a firm believer in HAVEN’s values of an individual’s rights to self-determination and respect, I feel that even at a green age, I have the determination and zest needed to teach our youth about the subject. A healthy relationship is one built on respect for both partners, one where both individuals encourage each other to grow independently and together. This is what I tell my students and now offer to you.

In an attempt to not sound overly sentimental and clichéd, I am willing to brand my time with HAVEN as one of the best years of my life so far. Not only have I had the opportunity to work closely with Gallatin County’s amazing community, I have grown to know an organization that has a huge impact on so many individuals.

I understand all too well the human need to want everything to be simple and good, and domestic violence is an issue that often gets side swept due to its sheer ugliness and brutality. Domestic violence is a worldwide epidemic, one that affects even our community.  I know that the only way that we as a community can eradicate domestic and all violence is to not condone any. It is my personal philosophy that if you don’t say anything, you are accepting the violence and therefore speaking volumes in its favor. I might not be able to do much by myself, but we can. I encourage you to help HAVEN take on this problem in our community and help HAVEN make a bigger impact; in the words of Mahatma Ghandi “be the change you wish to see in the world,” and may that change you wish to see be respect for all. Thanks to everyone who has touched my life this year, I will forever and always look back fondly on my experience in Montana.

Kristin also offered us valuable information about Native American culture, with a focus on tribes in Montana.  We asked her about family dynamics and gender relations in different tribes because we understand that culture has a lot to do with a victim’s action or lack of action in response to an abusive relationship.
