The island of Maui in the Hawaiian Islands is one of the best vacation destinations in the world: It's amazing beaches, very calm ocean bays and world class surf, lush mountain and volcano vistas, upcountry ranches, beautiful waterfalls and pools and thrilling mountain roads.

Maui has a cowboy side to its personality, and a great way to experience it is to go horseback riding. Some of the excursions visit waterfalls and pristine valleys.

Scuba diving and snorkeling in Maui is fantastic. The most popular dive spot is Molokini, a partially submerged crater off the coast of Kihei. Another place to enjoy snorkeling from the beach in summer months is in the marine reserve at Honolua Bay. The Lana'i Cathedrals is considered by some to be among the world's most beautiful dive spots. Expect to pay US$42-$160 for a one- to two-tank dive.

Most of the big resorts on Maui have tennis programs and several courts, and most allow nonguests to play for a small court fee.

Eating in the Hawaiian Islands is an experience you will be pleasantly surprised. In recent years, the Oahu dining scene has been dominated by the locavore trend of sourcing fruits, vegetables, fish and meats locally.This trend has its roots in the 20-year old Hawaii Regional Cuisine movement that blends Asian, Polynesian, mainland U.S. and European traditions, and focuses on supporting local farmers, ranchers and fisherman.Oahu is a true melting pot, and you'll also find excellent Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai and Laotian restaurants, as well as some very good Italian ones.Fresh seafood is plentiful, and it is almost always on the menu. The shrimp trucks and shrimp shacks of the North Shore are practically legendary. Be sure to sample a casual plate lunch consisting of a Hawaiian-style entree plus two scoops of white rice and another scoop of potato-mac salad. Other local treats include saimin (noodle soup), shave ice (snow cones), malasadas (hot Portuguese doughnuts sprinkled with sugar) and manapua (Chinese steamed buns filled with red pork).

Experience The Exciting Marine Life In Oahu

On my last trip to Hawaii I had one of the most enjoyable experiences in my life snorkeling with Hawaiian Real Nature Tours on the Island of Oahu in Hawaii.

They took us for a ride along the coast on highway 94 past Makaha and explained their special relationship with a school of local wild dolphins that knew them well. Bobby, our guide is a staunch environmentalist and instructed us as to how we were to handle ourselves once we were among the dolphins so we didn't disturb them.

We spotted a pod of dolphins swimming about a 100 yards off the beach, parked, dawned our snorkeling gear and swam out to the dolphins, passing a large turtle on the way. Before we knew it we were surrounded by playful, curious dolphins that swam and dived around us for a full hour thrilling all of us to no end.

Aloha Lopez Surfing Honolua Bay In Maui

Maui Guide is the most popular vacation island in the world and has been for decades. The awesome variety of scenic attractions are a magnet for vacationers from all around the world.

Haleakala National Park is a spectacular place to view extraordinary sunrises, enjoy exhilarating downhill biking, hiking into the crater and driving through the varied landscape at the different elevations on the drive up and down the volcano.

The road to Hana is a heavenly experience with incredible tropical bamboo forests, verdant valleys and dozens of spectacular waterfalls along the way. Don't do this if you get car sick as there are many tight curves along the way. If you are an adventurist you can drive all the way around the volcano and enjoy a full days experience, one that few try, but well worth the trip. There are no restaurants or food once you pass the Hana store.

Lahaina is the most popular place on Maui with many exciting shops, great restaurants and other fun attractions on Front Street. The harbor in Lahaina has lots of charter boats, big game fishing boats, whale watching boats and a ferry to Lanai Island that only takes 45 minutes.

Ka'anapali is where the majority of resorts are located new Lahaina. There is a great shopping mall called the "Whalers Village" that is walking distance from the resorts. A nice aspect of Ka'anapali is the fact that you can stroll along the beach walk and visit other resorts attractions and restaurants. There is a nice golf course walking distance from here.

Kapalua Guide is just a few minutes around the islands from Ka'anapali and has a great golf course at the Ritz Carlton Resort. A good tip for golfers thing about trying this one is to remember that it gets very breezy in the afternoons, so mornings are better. Honolua Bay is just around the corner from Kapalua and is a renowned surfing spot that has drawn big name surfers from around the world.

Wailea is an hour from Lahaina in the other direction and is home to some of the finest luxury resorts in the world with incredible golfing close by.

What Would You Do, Book Yourself, Or Use A Travel Advisor?

Two Brothers from Chicago planning their 7 day Maui Vacation. Johnny booked his own on-line. Frank used a professional travel advisor, (Travel Agent). Let’s compare their experiences.

Johnny spent two weeks searching the internet for hotel deals in Maui, the air tickets and the car rental and booked all of his and his wife’s air tickets, room and car.

Frank used a professional travel advisor to take care of everything. He called from home after work. It took him only 30 minutes chatting his to his travel advisor, explaining what they were looking for.

Johnny paid a total of $5680.00 for his vacation. Frank paid $6212.00
When Johnny and his wife checked in at the Chicago Airport they were surprised to find that they had to pay $50.00 extra for each bag of luggage. They departed from Chicago at 6:AM in very tight economy seats; stopped in Las Vegas for two hours, then in Los Angeles where they had to change planes. 6 hours later they departed for Honolulu, still crammed into tight seats in the back of the plane, eight rows apart from each other. When they arrived in Honolulu they had to wait for their luggage, then had to get it inspected; then two hours later they boarded their inter island flight to Maui. They finally landed in Maui at 4:30 PM totally exhausted.

Frank and his wife left Chicago at 10:30 AM on a non-stop flight sitting together and landed in Maui at 12:30 PM, a 7 hour flight.

Johnny and his wife waited for their luggage at Kahalui Airport in Maui. Then they carried it over to the curb and waited for the shuttle bus to take them to the Budget Car Rental. Their car wasn't ready. They waited an hour for it, then they headed for Ka’anapali, a bit confused about the directions. They finally arriving at the Hyatt Regency Resort at 8:30 tired and hot. The air conditioner in their compact car was inefficient.

Frank and his wife were met at the airport, presented beautiful orchid leis. Their entire set of luggage was carried out to a new Ford convertible equipped with a GPS. They arrived at the Hyatt Regency at 2:30.

Johnny and his wife got in line at the Hyatt registration desk and had to wait 15 minutes. They got their room keys and headed to their room, it was facing the parking lot, directly over the disco and smelled of cigarettes. They called the manager but there was nothing else available in their category for two days, so they settled for that room.

When Frank and his wife arrived they were met by the manager in the foyer who introduced himself and escorted them directly to their ocean view room on the fifth floor. He told he had upgraded them two categories at no extra charge; asked them if he could make their dinner reservations; gave them a bottle of wine; some flowers and an assortment of Hawaii fruit; filled their ice bucket, and carefully explained how everything in their room worked including the safe.

The next day they all met for breakfast. Frank and his wife’s breakfast was included in their package.

They went to the Hyatt spa next, Johnny paid the going rate. Frank and his wife used a $100.00 hotel credit that was included in their package.
This is just the first half of the comparison. Needless to say, Frank and his wife had a much better experience. And by the way, Johnny and his wife never used the Budget car the whole trip, preferring to be in the convertible with his brother.

Most of you relate to Lahaina, Kaanapali or Wailea when you think about Maui, however there is a whole lot more to experience and explore here.

No matter where you begin your day there is a plethora of exciting places to explore on Maui. You may want to just enjoy sunbathing your whole vacation, however, if you are the curious type you are on one of the most exciting islands in Hawaii.

Just up the road from Kaanapali is Kapalua, a lush and cooler part of Maui. Here you can golf, snorkel, scuba dive, visit the art center and even zip-line through the tropical forests.

A little further up the road in Honolua Bay, a world renowned surfing spot where you can watch world class surfers from up on the cliffs over looking the bay.

My all time favorite day trip is to do the Hana Highway loop, starting in Paia then take the Hana Highway around the island. This is an incredible experience with awesome scenery all the way, bamboo forests, glorious waterfalls around every curve, the scenic Keanae Peninsula, the Waianapanapa State Park, Hana Bay, and make sure not to miss Hamoa Beach and Koki Beach. Then Ohe'o Gulch, called the Seven Sacred Pools by the locals, and the Haleakala National Park. This part takes about half a day driving.

Myself, I don't go back the same way, I keep going all the way around that end of the island, stopping at Kaupo, then all the way through upcountry and back to Paia. I recommend a convertible so you can take in all the extraordinary scenery.
