Lord Mountbatten: The Last Viceroy

Lord Mountbatten, great grandson of Queen Victoria, was a celebrated British naval officer who oversaw the defeat of the Japanese offensive towards India during World War Two. In 1947, he was appointed the last viceroy of British India, charged with handing India back to its people. For six months, Mountbatten lived in Viceroy’s House which had been the home of the British rulers of India for more than 300 years.

Fit For Royalty

Hawes & Curtis dressed Lord Mountbatten for most of his life and he introduced members of the Royal Family to the brand, including Prince Philip who went on to grant Hawes & Curtis a Royal Warrant of Appointment. On the 20th of December 1920 he wrote a thank you letter to Mr. Curtis:

Hawes & Curtis harks back to royal heritage with Lord Mountbatten in new film Viceroy’s House

British heritage brand Hawes & Curtis is partnering with Pathé Films to co-promote the film Viceroy’s House. Hugh Bonneville stars as Lord Mountbatten opposite Gillian Anderson as Edwina Mountbatten in Gurinder Chadha’s film Viceroy’s House, in cinemas nationwide March 3rd. Viceroy’s House in Delhi was the home of the British rulers of India, but after 300 years, that rule was coming to an end. For six months in 1947, Lord Mountbatten, great grandson of Queen Victoria, assumed the post of the last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people.

Hawes & Curtis, the classic tailor, has served royalty and aristocracy since 1913, including Lord Mountbatten . Hawes & Curtis dressed Lord Mountbatten for most of his life and he introduced members of the Royal Family to the brand, including Prince Philip who went on to grant Hawes & Curtis a Royal Warrant of Appointment.

Under the current SS17 campaign ‘Great British Design Since 1913’, the Jermyn street shirtmaker has partnered with Pathé to co-promote the film and showcase its phenomenal heritage and product design, which has long been acclaimed by famous customers including the Duke of Windsor, Cary Grant and Fred Astaire.

Boasting fine materials and sharp 1960s tailoring, our new collection inspired by The Man from U.N.C.L.E features exquisitely tailored suits made from the finest Italian wool, luxurious shirts crafted from super 140s cotton and slick accessories. For women, statement monochrome blouses steal the show. The collection also includes several casual pieces such as a timeless leather biker jacket.

The collection was inspired by the iconic 1964 spy series of the same name, which has been remade into a Hollywood blockbuster directed by Guy Ritchie. Starring Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Elizabeth Debicki, Alicia Vikander, and Hugh Grant, The Man from U.N.C.L.E, in cinemas August 14, is set against the backdrop of the early 1960s period of the Cold War.

The day began at 7a.m.sharp at our Central London studio. After several strong espressos, our talented hair and make-up artists worked their magic on our models and transformed them into 1960s secret agents.

The carefully curated looks were put together by our in-house stylist who wanted to create ready-to-wear outfits that were suave and sophisticated. Every outfit from this collection nods to the 1960s whilst being contemporary and fresh. The result was a selection of looks designed to cater to the modern man and woman – whether their mission takes them to the office or a cocktail party.

Introducing Our New Collection Inspired by The Man From U.N.C.L.E

Espionage and looking smart have always gone hand in hand. So when we heard the iconic 1964 spy series, The Man from U.N.C.L.E, was being remade into a Hollywood blockbuster in cinemas August 14, we jumped at the chance to recreate the characters’ enviable wardrobe into a unique capsule collection.

Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin in director Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E., a fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series. Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. centres on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin. Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organisation.

The 1960s secret agent stands as an enduring embodiment of jet-age sophistication and impeccable style. Our aim was to create a truly stylish, unique collection that really stood out from the norm. To achieve this, our creative team replicated the key pieces in the film from the finest fabrics, with sharp 1960s tailoring. The premium collection features three piece suits crafted in Italy from Super 140s pure wool, exquisitely tailored shirts and slick accessories. It also includes several casual pieces, such as an iconic leather biker jacket as well as elegant women’s blouses.

We are thrilled to announce that we have partnered with the new Hollywood blockbuster The Man from U.N.C.L.E – creating a stylish collection of ‘60s inspired outfits influenced by the movie. Espionage and looking smart have always gone hand in hand, so when we heard the iconic 1964 spy series was being remade into a movie, in cinemas August 14, we jumped at the chance to recreate the characters’ enviable wardrobe.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E is a fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series starring Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin. Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E is a fast-moving, action-packed, sexy and stylish international adventure. The movie embodies everything that made the 1960s cool – from its art, fashion and music, to its attitudes and perspectives – into an accurate yet understated vibe that is both retro and undeniably 21st century. “What I remember most about the series was its tone,” Ritchie reflects. “And when the opportunity arose for me to make the movie, that’s what inspired me.”

Locations play a significant role in The Man from U.N.C.L.E, helping set the tone and authenticity. Producer Lional Wigram explains “Rome typifies the style of the ‘60s and Berlin is, of course, the focal point for all those Cold War movies.” The Berlin sets exude a cool, stark palette overall, in comparison to the more lush, bright and sensuous colours and textures of the film’s Italian locales. Ritchie wanted the look and feel of the ‘60s to be present, but not obvious or clichéd with hints of Cold War.

The work of award-winning costume designer Joanna Johnston harmonised with the tones selected by the production designer Scholl and his sets. “In Berlin, the overriding visual was concrete. Everything was cold, hard, and quite dismal,” she says. “Then in Italy, the colours are warm and it’s all very sophisticated.” How the era broke culturally from the immediate post-war drabness of the 1950s was what inspired Johnstone, who researched the period via fashion magazines of the time. Johnston dressed Henry Cavill in fine tailoring from Saville Row to create an appearance that was expensive and chic. “They were made of the most wonderful fabric and as soon as I put them on, I felt like Napoleon Solo”, Cavill says.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E exudes style and sophistication while being witty and humorous. Ritchie’s movie takes a classic genre and puts a contemporary twist on it. Tales of espionage still continue to thrill and entertain generation after generation, proving that saving the world never goes out of style.
