The Study Guide Given in class is not to be returned to class. It is a reference for the content of the test.

The Math test will cover the following areas:

Perimeter of closed shapes. (Not Circles)

Areas of triangles, squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids.

Volume of rectangular prisms.

Study for Geometry test on 2/13.

Please bring home all paperwork from your Portfolio on Thursday. Those documents are great study tools.

Please use the textbook in homeroom to take home for study purposes. Every child has a textbook.

I will provide notes in class to be written in your Math Journal. I will also provide the SITES available for studying.

Valentines Day/Exchange

Please prepare for the exchange of Valentines on the 14th. We will place a class list in the Thursday folders next week. The classroom policy is that all students who choose to participate must have a Valentine for every child in the class.

The students will keep their regular schedule throughout the day, then children will exchange Valentines and have a snack at 1:30.

Greyhound Gala

Dear Parents,

I just wanted to let you know that, as a gala auction item, Mrs. Nelson and I are offering "Mini Golf and a Treat."

This will be for the auction winner plus a guest. Approximately 2 hours of fun miniature golfing and special treats at Mountasia off of Barrett Parkway. Date and time to be worked out between teacher and parents.

The Gala Auction will be held February 4, 2012 at Olde Towne Athletic Club from 7 to 11 PM. Tickets are on sale at http://gmefoundation.org - $35 and $45 at the door or you can Download 2012GALATicketformto purchase tickets in advance. Visit the website for a sample of items to bid on. All proceeds go back to GMEF.

The proceeds will be used to improve our school by providing funding for programs such as technology, educational curriculum and facility improvements. The GMEF will accumulate and distribute resources beyond those provided by Cobb County or the PTA, in order to further enhance, foster and enrich the educational experiences of all students at Garrison Mill.

Science Fair

Science Fair Project

Dear Parents,

It was such a pleasure to witness the amount of knowledge the students gained through the learning process while completing their science fair projects. The students clearly demonstrated a thorough understanding of the scientific process and science inquiry standards. We are blessed to have parental support of this process. We would like to thank Mrs. Haas in the Media Center for giving up her space for two days and the independent judges from Lasstier Science Honor Society who spent hours judging the projects. Students will be given their rubric back on Monday.

Congratulations to Ashton and Kate for winning with their magnificent scientific procedures! ALL of the students did a great job! We are very proud of you.

As we prepare for the New Year expectations, please take time to complete the Fact Fluency Tests that are posted as assignments in the Skills Tutor area of the Weblink Notebook. This is a mandatory assignment.

All students are to complete all four Fluency tests (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). They may complete it at school or home. It is DUE by 8am on Tuesday the 17th of January. ALL Students are held accountable for this in technological format regardless if they also test with paper and pencil by choice.

Third Nine Weeks:

Geometry:

M5G1 Geometry: Figures/Congruence

Students will understand congruence of geometric figures and the correspondence of their vertices, sides, and angles.

Students will understand the relationship of the circumference of a circle to its diameter is pi (3.14).

TESTING - PARENTAL SIGNATURE REQUIRED ON STUDY GUIDE

Dear Parents,

This is the moment you have all been waiting for...Happy Holidays! :)

The parental ban on helping students with Math homework has been lifted!

We are able to form groups, move students, reteach and assess, categorize, redirect, discuss with students and otherwise determine strengths from weaknesses in other formats now.

There is a study guide coming home today for the final test in the second nine weeks on Monday December 19th and you may help your child as much as you would like. It has a teaching section at the top and you can study with your child if you would like to help them do their homework.

Regardless if they receive help or not, it must be signed and turned in as they are handed their post test for the second nine weeks on Dec. 19th.

It will be a fair trade; study guide for test.

NO OTHER HOMEWORK will be given between now and then in Math Class. It is their sole responsibility to study and practice fractions.

Most of the students are self sufficient in this area, so do not be pressured into doing this with them unless it is your personal desire.

Field Trip on December 6th to the Symphony

The fifth grade will be traveling to the Cobb Energy Center (Cumberland) to see the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. We will leave at 10:45am and return to the school at 2pm.

The students will eat lunch at school around 10am before we leave.

DRESS CODE:

Young Ladies....Dress pants or skirt or dress. Comfortable shoes.

Young Men....Nice pants, collared shirt tucked in, nice shoes.

The 5th grade 2nd Nine Weeks Post Test will be given on Monday the 19th of December. The school wide Spelling Bee will be held at 9:15 am on Tuesday the 20th.
