Herkimer County Community College has named two student-athletes to the Green and Gold Club for May 2013.

Men’s baseball player Brandon Overstreet, Martin County, Florida, finished the 2013 season with a .403 batting average, nine doubles, two triples and two homeruns. Overstreet was named 1st team All-Region and 2nd team All-American. “He is an outstanding catcher and shut down other teams’ running game,” said coach Jason Rathbun. Overstreet graduated in May with an associate in arts degree in Liberal Arts & Sciences: General Studies.

Women’s softball player Tina Karaqi, Thornwood, NY, was a standout player this year, contributing to the Lady Generals’ 3-2 season record and the softball program’s first National Championship title. Karaqi received the Outstanding Offensive Player award and was recognized as the MVP at the National Tournament, where she had a .833 batting average. She was also named to the Region III All-Tournament team and the Mountain Valley All-Conference team. Karaqi recently completed her freshman year a General Studies major.

HCCC’s Green and Gold Club honors an outstanding male and female athlete each month.

“HCTV 99 News” Earns Recognition in Associated Press Contest

Students enrolled in the Radio-Television Broadcasting program at Herkimer County Community College were recently awarded two “Special Mention” awards at the New York State Broadcasters Associated Press Awards. The presentations were made at the annual awards banquet held on Saturday, June 1 in Saratoga Springs, New York.

“HCTV 99 News” won special recognition from the Associated Press for “best news story” and “best regularly scheduled newscast” in the college competition segment of the awards. This marks the first time that Herkimer’s Radio-Television Broadcasting program has submitted entries into the AP contest. The college newscast is a production of one of the Advanced Video Production courses offered in the program. Assistant Professor Douglas Flanagan says that the entry “grew out of the student coverage of the recent shootings in Mohawk and Herkimer. We concentrated on the standoff and also on the way that the incident affected the college campus. With a campus wide lockdown, the students in the class concentrated on how the campus and the community were being affected by the ongoing crisis.”

Students who worked directly on the shooting story include Marc Barraco (Richfield Springs), who took video footage and served as the on camera reporter. Barraco also assisted in editing the final piece. David Glantz (Rome) and Adam Svereika (Hannibal) were involved in getting footage during the standoff. Jaclyn Milillo (Wading River) was the producer of the newscast that week. “This was a real world example of breaking news coverage, and the entire crew did a fantastic job under pressure. That kind of news experience, while a result of a tragic local event, is nonetheless a situation that is simply impossible to recreate in a typical classroom environment. They did a great job under the circumstances, and it is very gratifying that the Associated Press took the opportunity to recognize their hard work,” said Flanagan.

Herkimer County Community College was the only community college represented at the awards. The AP awards contest draws entries from around the state, mostly from professional news operations in traditional broadcast television, radio, cable, and web based outlets.

“HCTV 99 News” began in 2003 at Herkimer County Community College as a live 15 minute newscast. It has since grown to a full 30 minute show, produced each week by advanced video production students. Additional 15 minute live newscasts now supplement the original thirty minute show, produced by students enrolled in various media degree programs.

The feature story that generated the award submission can be found on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-chyXnbp5_M.
Herkimer County Community College’s 2013 Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held Friday, October 4 on campus, as part of the College’s Fall Fest & Alumni Weekend.

The College will honor five individuals and one team who have made outstanding contributions to the institution through intercollegiate athletics. The event will begin at 5 p.m. with a strolling dinner and cash bar, induction ceremony at 6:30 p.m. followed by a social hour with dessert. The fee is $35 per person. For reservations, contact the Foundation Office at shepardta@herkimer.edu or 315 -866-0300, ext. 8459.

The 2013 class includes: Jeanne Galvin, associate professor emeritus and field hockey coach; Todd Allen ‘07 baseball; Eileen Coyle ‘07 women’s soccer; Cynthia Wetmore ‘80 multi-sport athlete; John Fornino, contributor; and the 1987 Field Hockey Team, Herkimer’s first ever national championship team.
About the 2013 Inductees:

Jeanne Galvin, Richfield Springs, NY taught physical education and coached field hockey at Herkimer County Community College from 1971 until her retirement in 1995. As the first woman in the physical education department, Galvin began the women’s athletic department. Starting in 1971, she organized the field hockey, volleyball, women’s basketball and softball teams and coached all four sports for four years. At the time, the women’s division of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) did not exist, so Herkimer competed under the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. Later, when the NJCAA expanded to include women, Galvin became the women’s regional director and chaired the national field hockey committee for many years. She also served as president of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Under Galvin, the field hockey program won national titles in 1987 and 1991, and Galvin was named NJCAA Field Hockey Coach of the Year both years. She coached the women’s basketball team for 17 years, winning the regional championship in 1979 and 1980, and was named Regional Coach of the Year both times. Since her retirement, she has remained active in golf and curling.

Todd Allen ‘07, Oriskany, NY played baseball for the Generals, and was named to the All-Conference team in 2006 as well as 1st Team All Region and 1st Team All-American. In 2007, Allen was named All-Conference player, 1st Team All-Region, 2nd Team All-American and HCCC Male Athlete of the Year. He holds the second highest batting average for a season at .480. Coach Jason Rathbun said “Todd led us to our first two World Series. He was the middle of our lineup both years. Todd was the first All-American in Herkimer baseball.”

Eileen Coyle ‘07, Oneonta, NY captained the women’s soccer team and played in both 2005 & 2006. She was named Mohawk Valley Conference Player of the Year for both years, and was a two-time first team NJCAA All-American. In 2005, Coyle played 21 games for Herkimer, scoring 29 goals and having 7 assists. She was also first-team All-Region and NSCAA All-American. Coyle scored 43 goals in 19 games in 2006, had 15 assists and was NSCAA All-American. Coyle also played women’s lacrosse at Herkimer and SUNY Geneseo. Coach Amy Dommer said, “Eileen was an absolute game changer. Her speed and ability were unmatched throughout the country, which made her such a threat to opposing teams. Eileen is truly an icon of the Herkimer women’s soccer program.”

Cynthia Wetmore ‘80, Ithaca, NY was a multi-sport athlete at Herkimer, outstanding in field hockey, softball and women’s basketball. In her freshman year, her field hockey team finished 16-3 and second place in the Regional Tournament. Wetmore scored 22 goals and was named to the All-Region Team. Her sophomore year, the team had a record of 17-2-3, a regional championship and finished third in the national tournament. Wetmore was Field Hockey MVP, First Team All-Region, First Team National Tournament and All-American. In two years she scored an unbelievable 46 goals, an accomplishment that will stand forever in Herkimer’s record book. As a freshman, Wetmore’s basketball team finished 21-3, won the Region III championship and competed in the national tournament in Kansas. The following year her team, 16-2, won the regional championship and again traveled to the national tournament in Kansas. Wetmore scored 18 points in the double overtime regional championship game to help her team qualify for nationals again. Wetmore also played two years on the softball team. She continued her education at the University of Rhode Island on a field hockey scholarship. After college, she continued to distinguish herself and may be the only former Herkimer athlete who has coached a team to a NCAA national championship. She is currently the head field hockey coach at SUNY Cortland, a position she has held since 1998.

John Fornino, Frankfort, NY, has made special contributions to the quality, growth and reputation of HCCC’s intercollegiate athletic program. A player and coach for over 30 years and an avid Generals soccer fan, Fornino has made extraordinary contributions to players, coaches and the sport of soccer at Herkimer. Fornino has received the Coliseum Presidential Award for going over and above in his contributions to soccer at Herkimer.

The 1987 Field Hockey Team won the first ever national championship in the history of the College. Herkimer defeated Becker Junior College, Leicester, MA 1-0 in the national championship game. The team also won the NJCAA Region III Championship game that year. Team members, coached by Jeanne Galvin, were: Deda Wojcik, Shelly Fallon, Beth Grouch, Tracey D’amore, Kathy Hawk, Sue Yerina, Terri Dean, Michelle Dudrak, Dori Yerina, JeRae Benedict, Laura Zerillo, Pam Comins, Wendy Russell, Mary Clifford, Christine Battisti, Terri Scoville, Lori Lupini, Dana Alberico and Carol Ann Champlin.

Five members of the Herkimer County Community College national championship women’s softball team have been named to NJCAA All-American Teams. First team selections include freshman catcher Samantha Smaldone (Delmar), sophomore infielder Jessica Patterelli (Canastota) and sophomore outfielder Stephanie Siriano (Sherrill). Making second team All-American are freshman DP/Utility Delaney Buckley (Utica) and freshman pitcher Toni Secreti (Baldswinville). Siriano and Patterelli are the first two-year first team All-Americans in the history of the Herkimer softball program.

Head Coach PJ Anadio said, “I am very proud of these young ladies being named NJCAA All-Americans. There are only 22 spots to be filled from the entire country, so for Herkimer to be recognized with five is amazing and a true sign of respect for the program. This is also a team accomplishment. Without the rest of the team pushing these five day in and day out to achieve excellence, they wouldn’t be where they are today.”

The Herkimer County Community College women’s softball team won the 2013 National Junior College Athletic Association Division III National Championship on Saturday, May 18 in Rochester Minnesota. The Generals had a 4-0 record in the national tournament and a season ending record of 43-2. They also won the NJCAA Region III women’s softball championship.

Siriano was named the Region III Player of the Year and Patterelli was named to the Region III All-Tournament Team. Siriano, Secreti, Patterelli, Smaldone and Buckley were named to the First Team All-Region.

Ashley Sterritt (Accord), Rebekah Kitchen (Delmar), Secreti and Siriano were named to the All Tournament Team at the World Series. The National Tournament MVP was awarded to Tina Karaqi (Thornwood) who was also awarded the Outstanding Offensive Player award. Secreti was recognized with the Outstanding Pitcher Award for the tournament.

Three Herkimer County Community College employees are recipients of the prestigious SUNY Chancellor’s Award. The three were presented with the awards at the College’s recent commencement.

Sharon Gleasman-Howell ‘79, Professor of Physical Education, is the recipient of the 2013 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service. Professor Gleasman-Howell has demonstrated 32 years of expertise in her devotion to the College: she teaches, coaches and volunteers. She is relentless in her commitment to HCCC. In her early years, Gleasman was one of two females in a very strongly male dominated field. She continued to be an excellent role model for other females who had the same career interests, long before numerous federal laws helped enforce equity in athletic programs. Gleasman-Howell has coached nine individual athletic National Champions and won two titles as track coach. She is a member of the inaugural class inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

She spends countless hours volunteering with different clubs and student-based organizations, all appreciated by the HCCC community. “Sharon has dedicated countless hours of work to students with disabilities so they can succeed on campus,” said President Ann Marie Murray. “I am proud to present this award to Professor Sharon Gleasman-Howell in recognition of her mastering teaching and coaching techniques that inspire her students.” She holds an A.S. from HCCC; a B.S. from the University of Rhode Island and an M.S. from SUNY Cortland.

Associate Dean of Continuing Education Linda Contino Lamb is the recipient of the 2013 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service. Lamb has over 20 years of experience in Continuing Education and Online Learning. After 12 years in various roles in Herkimer’s Office of Continuing Education, she became the first Director of the Internet Academy, where she was able to work closely with faculty and returning adult students as they entered the online classroom. The Internet Academy currently supports 850 students who study exclusively on line each term.

Through Lamb’s efforts, a Teaching and Learning Collaborative (TLC) was developed to promote excellence in teaching and support the HCCC community of faculty. In its first year, the TLC offered 45 sessions for faculty on various topics. She was named Associate Dean of Continuing Education in 2005 and oversees the Internet Academy, TLC, Office of Community Education, College Now Concurrent Enrollment Program and the Office of Adjunct instruction. Dr. Murray said, “Congratulations, Linda, in receiving the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service for your strong commitment to this institution. I am proud to present you with this award.” Lamb holds a B.S. from Alfred University and an M.S. from SUNY at Buffalo.

Bonnie Wezalis ‘92 is the recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service. An Office Assistant II in the Humanities/Social Science Division, Bonnie began her employment at HCCC in 1992 as a part-time Secretary in the President’s Office. She became a full-time Stenographer in the President’s Office in 1995. Besides her general office work, she performed duties for the college attorney, Director of Institutional Research and Assistant to the President.

Wezalis became the Office Assistant in the Humanities/Social Science Division in 2003. She continuously demonstrates excellence in performing her job duties. “She’s both professional and courteous in assisting faculty, staff and students. Aside from being exceptional in every aspect of her job description, her enthusiasm, energy and gregariousness far transcend the requirements of her position. Bonnie continually goes above and beyond all endeavors she encounters. I am proud to present Bonnie Wezalis with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service,” said Dr. Murray. Wezalis hold an A.A.S. degree from Herkimer County Community College.

The recipients each received a Chancellor’s Award medallion from the State University of New York. Their names will be included on a plaque in the lobby of the McLaughlin College Center.

Herkimer County Community College’s Cogar Gallery will feature “Follow the Water,” Photographs of alumnus Kathleen Deep, ‘08, Ashford, CT from June 7-July 15, 2013 in the Cogar Gallery. An opening reception will be held Friday, June 7 from 7-9pm.

Kathleen Deep is a photographer from Upstate New York who continues to work in black & white film. She received her associate in applied science degree in photographic technology from Herkimer County Community College in 2008, and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. She then earned a bachelor in fine arts from Cazenovia College and in May 2013 graduated from the University of Connecticut with a M.F.A. in studio art specializing in photography with an art history minor, cum laude.

Deep’s work most recently has been exhibited at the Benton Museum in Storrs, CT, and at Sideshow Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. She currently lives and works in Connecticut. “I walk alone amongst the trees. I wade slowly and wait for the water to still,” she said. “By slowing my step and my seeing, I am more aware of my behaviors while wandering. I question what my connection is to the natural world, and where my comfort in silence and solitude derives from. The more I explore and photograph my surroundings; I develop an understanding of them. The more I understand, the closer I feel to becoming part of them,” Deep concluded.

The Cogar Gallery is located in the Hummel Corporate and Professional Education Center, at the main entrance to the McLaughlin College Center. It is open to the public free of charge Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. when the College is open. Visit online at http://www.herkimer.edu/cogar.

Herkimer County Community College students and faculty visited Gunther von Hagen’s BODY WORLDS: Pulse at Discovery Times Square, New York for the exhibit’s opening on April 26. The exhibit is the newest in the renowned BODY WORLDS series, which has presented the human body in groundbreaking ways for discovery to more than 36 million people around the world during its 18 year tenure. Anatomy & Physiology students enrolled in Herkimer’s Physical Therapist Assistant and Science programs were able to view real human bodies preserved with plastination technology to study the anatomy of the human body in its healthy and diseased state. Faculty chaperones in attendance included Dr. Catherine Delorme, PT, DPT; Dr. Karen Jones PT, DPT; Scott Miller, PTA mentor and Rebecca Ward, Assistant Professor of Biology. The trip was sponsored by HCCC’s Student Activities and Science Departments.

Herkimer County Community College is among 13 colleges and universities that recently earned national accreditation or reaccreditation for concurrent enrollment programs. The National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) establishes an autonomous Accreditation Commission to assume responsibility for peer review.

Herkimer’s College Now program allows high school students to take college level courses taught by high school teachers in their high school, during the regular school day. The program is available in 15 high schools in Herkimer and Otsego Counties and in Herkimer County BOCES, with approximately 40 different courses offered. It was first accredited in 2006, and has now been reaccredited for seven academic years. College Now classes are taught by high school instructors who have been approved by HCCC as part-time faculty members at the College.

Outgoing NACEP Accreditation Committee Chair Becky Carter of Indiana University’s Advance College Project remarked: “I’m very pleased to welcome these 13 colleges and universities to the select group of 89 concurrent enrollment partnerships nationwide accredited through NACEP’s extensive peer-review process. They each demonstrated to their peers from other NACEP accredited programs that the college courses offered in high schools are of the same quality as courses offered on campus.”

By taking more rigorous courses in high school, students can learn early about the expectations of college while getting a head start on earning college credits. Herkimer’s College Now Specialist is Dr. Eric Vernold. Jonathan Bryant is Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Adjuncts & College Now. Students may visit the College Now website at http://www.herkimer.edu/college_now or contact the College Now office at 315-866-0300 ext. 8743 for further information.

A Business: Sports & Recreation Management major, Wendall is a national qualifier in six events: the 100, 200, high jump, long jump and triple jump. He was named Region III Male Athlete of the Week and broke five school records. He is ranked #1 in the National poll in the 100, 200, long jump; second in high jump, fourth in triple jump and 5th in the 400m relay.

The Female Athlete of the Month is Jessica Patterelli, Softball, Canastota, NY. She is a Liberal Arts & Sciences: General Studies major. In 31 games, Patterelli has .583 BA, 15 2B’s, 7 HR’s, 45 RBI’s. She is 8-0 in the circle. Coach PJ Anadio said “Jess has taken the next step this year as far as a player, student and person. She is our leader on the field and one of the fiercest competitors I’ve ever known. Our success the last two years is largely due to Jess Patterelli.

HCCC’s Green and Gold Club honors an outstanding male and female athlete each month.
