The Male Athlete of the Month is Dequan Jefferson, Men’s Basketball, Utica, NY. A Human Resource Management freshman, Jefferson averages six points and six rebounds per game. Coach Matt Lee said, “Dequan leads us in minutes played, has made some big shots for us and is our best all-around defender.”

The Female Athlete of the Month is Sara Edenhofer, Women’s Bowling, Hilton, NY. She is a Liberal Arts & Sciences: Social Science freshman. Edenhofer is currently fourth in Mountain Valley Conference scoring, and led the Generals in back-to-back conference victories.
Herkimer County Community College announces upcoming non-credit health and fitness programming.

Jump in the pool and dance away the calories at AquaZumba with Hollie Raux. Classes are held every Saturday morning from 10:30am to 11:30am. The fee is $9 per class.

Zumba with Lisa Murphy features interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. This class is for all levels. Section W2 is six sessions on Wednesday evenings from 7:15pm to 8:15pm beginning February 22. The fee is $38.

Pilates is made up of exercises to strengthen and tone muscles and provide flexibility and balance. Section T2 is five sessions on Tuesdays from 5:15pm to 6pm beginning March 6. The fee is $33.

Pre-registration is required for all courses and can be completed by calling (315) 866-0300 ext. 8251, Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm or by visiting http://www.herkimer.edu/pay-ce.
Herkimer County Community College will hold Instant Admission Days in February at area high schools. High School students interested in attending HCCC in the fall 2012 semester will be able to apply and get admitted to the College in the same day. HCCC admissions counselors will be at the high schools at a pre-set time. There will also be giveaways of Herkimer gear.

“Typically, students send an application in for review and must wait to be admitted,” said Robert Palmieri, Associate Dean of Enrollment Management. “We can eliminate that wait and provide students a quick answer with instant admission.” Students should bring an official high school transcript or official GED test scores.

There will be an Instant Admit Day on February 6 at Frankfort-Schuyler High School and on February 7 at Dolgeville Central. Other locations will be announced soon. Students can check with their high school guidance office for specific information.

Area high schools interested in participating in Instant Admission Day on their campus should contact Herkimer’s Admissions Office at 315-866-0300, ext. 8278; or email: admissions@herkimer.edu.

Herkimer County Community College’s Gender Studies Program will present a lecture by Sally Roesch Wagner on The Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Influence on Women’s Rights. Free and open to the public, the event begins at 12:30pm Thursday, February 2 in the Robert McLaughlin College Center room 288.

This program is made possible through Speakers in the Humanities, a program of the New York Council for the Humanities. Speakers in the Humanities lectures are made possible with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the New York State Legislature, and through funds from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation.

Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner is the Executive Director of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation. She is one of the first women to receive a doctorate for work in women’s studies in the United States (UC Santa Cruz, 1978). Dr. Wagner is also a founder of one of the country’s first women’s studies programs at California State University, Sacramento (1970). A women’s studies professor for 37 years and now Executive Director of the Gage Foundation in Fayetteville, New York, Wagner is the nation’s foremost authority on Matilda Joslyn Gage. Wagner’s recent titles include: She Who Holds the Sky: Matilda Joslyn Gage (Sky Carrier Press, 2003); Introduction to the reprint of Matilda Joslyn Gage’s 1893 classic Woman, Church and State (Humanity Books, 2002); and Sisters in Spirit: Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Influence on Early American Feminists (Native Voices, 2001). Dr. Wagner also appeared in the Ken Burns documentary, Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.

Her lecture is about the influence that the Haudenosaunee had on the early American feminists. Native American women generally had a status which would be the envy of United States women, even today. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Matilda Joslyn Gage, the two major theoreticians of the early women’s rights movement, had direct knowledge of the Haudenosaunee, writing about the superior social, political, religious, and economic status of women in the Iroquois nations.

Since its launch in 1983, the Council’s Speakers in the Humanities program has linked distinguished scholars with a diverse audience through the presentation of lectures on a broad range of topics. Each year, hundreds of cultural organizations and community groups take advantage of this program, which offers the very best in humanities scholarship to thousands of citizens in every corner of New York State.

The New York Council for the Humanities is a not-for-profit, independent affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Through statewide collaborations; programs and services that encourage imaginative thinking and critical inquiry; the Council works to ensure that the humanities are present in the intellectual and cultural life of every New Yorker.

In conjunction with Herkimer County Community College women’s basketball game vs. MVCC on Tuesday, January 31 at 7 p.m., Herkimer County dairy farmers and their princesses will have a full-court press with the message that milk is a nutrient powerhouse containing calcium, protein and vitamin D. Bring your family for food, games, prizes, coupons and recipes.

Halftime games will include a “Mooove” It Course, “Pour One More Milk” Cup Stacking and Chug Contest and “Ahhh, The Power of Cheese” - Pizza Box Balancing Race. Courtside, the Herkimer General will take on the Herkimer Holstein Cow. T-shirts, got milk™? pencils, and cups are a few of the items that spectators will take home as prizes and giveaways.

“Dairy, fruits and vegetables are the fuel you need to play ball and have an active lifestyle,” says Jennifer Hula, 2011 Herkimer County Dairy Princess, from Jordanville. “In fact, milk is the optimum post-exercise drink because its high water content replaces fluids and prevents dehydration after a workout or game. Sore and tired muscles benefit from milk’s carbohydrate and protein content that is twice that of water or sports drinks.”

“Dr. Zimpher is a great leader. She has identified a course of action that is ambitious and will result in transforming our system and ultimately providing our students with the best chance for success. Her message matches our mission here at Herkimer County Community College by putting the emphasis on instruction and support of student services. Getting down to business means following through with the SUNY Strategic Plan and the performance measures that have been identified. This direction fits with our strategic plan and also complements our performance measures to which we hold ourselves accountable. We look forward to lots of good hard work that will benefit our faculty, students and our communities.”

“We applaud Governor Cuomo for his continued support of SUNY. The expansion of the NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant Act to all SUNY campuses clearly supports SUNY’s strategic plan and Chancellor Zimpher’s pledge for SUNY to be an economic driver for New York State. Herkimer County Community College and all community colleges will have equal access to funds that are vital in creating programs necessary to respond to the economic and workforce development needs of our communities.

“I am also grateful to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver for his pledge of support for increased funding for SUNY. Keeping our tuition affordable is so very critical in providing access to all New York State residents who can benefit from a higher education.”
