Open Lectures Series: Multilingualism and Student Identity

There is a lot of fear in the UAE – as in many other parts of the world – that our students, when having to learn a second or even a third foreign language – whether at high school or at university – lose mastery of their mother tongue, or even their personal identity. This presentation aims to show that these fears are unfounded, that even the opposite can be true, and that language learning can mean much more than acquiring a mere communicative tool. It will refer to international scholarship, the author’s language learning history, research and publications, and some famous historic language learners and travelers. But otherwise the presentation will deliberately have an everyday level of expression of experiences, and should therefore interest language students and teachers, and anybody open to interactive change and intercultural enrichment in today’s globalized world.

Thursday, March 1^st, 2012: 7 HCT male colleges across UAE will participate in the HCT Sports Day. It is a national Olympic Movement activity of sports organized by Dubai Men’s College.

HCT Sports Day is known to be the most popular sports events among HCT communities. In addition of promoting mass participation, it will be a sporting celebration for youth Emiratis students to observe and practice the values of Fair-play, Perseverance, Respect, Team Spirit and Sportsmanship.

A 6 wide array of Olympic style events will take place at Dubai Men’s College between 8 am and 5 pm, featuring athletes, young people, and local citizens of all ages. Below is the program and details of the day

The 18th Annual TESOL Arabia Conference

The 18^th Annual TESOL Arabia Conference will be held at Dubai Men’s College from March 8-10, 2012. The theme of this year’s event is “Achieving Excellence through Life Skills Education”. Plenary and invited speakers will present on a wide range of topics that touch on aspects of an English language educator’s personal and professional life. More than 300 concurrent sessions featuring locally-based experts will take place over the three- day event.

Pre-conference development courses will be held on March 7^th and feature topics like teaching and learning through the arts, personalized professional development and teaching and learning online. Development courses also make up part of the TESOL Arabia Conference program. Courses taking place during the conference include: Achieving Excellence through Life Skills Education and Young Learners.

An exhibition that showcases new and innovative books and software will also be an important part of this conference. For those looking for a job in the region, TESOL Arabia features the largest English language teacher recruitment fair in the Gulf.

Theatre Workshops at Madinat Zayed and Ruwais Colleges

The workshops will be held by Maggie Hannan who works with the Resuscitation Theatre group in Abu Dhabi. She is being sponsored by ADMAF and this initiative is being coordinated as part of the Abu Dhabi Arts Festival. The workshops will be an opportunity to explore how movement and voice can help to understand important themes and relationships between characters. There will be a chance to look at texts and how to interpret them through voice and movement.Maggie Hannan grew up in NYC and has been involved in professional theatre since the age of fifteen. Her credits include off-Broadway Theatre, Regional Ballet Companies, Las Vegas Cabaret and a Broadway National Tour. She has led performance groups at various venues across the Middle East and has worked as an actress, dancer, choreographer, director and teacher.

Open Lectures Series: Promoting Learner Autonomy in the ESL Classroom: Can Using Technology Help?

The goal of learner autonomy, as worthwhile as it is to many teachers and learners, is not one that is easily reached. ESL students bring with them their rich cultural backgrounds and expectations of learning, which may not include becoming an autonomous learner. If this is the case, a teacher need not give up on the notion of fostering learner autonomy, but rather work at designing tasks that will provide the life-long learning skills students need to become autonomous. Little (2008) believes that “our capacity for autonomous behavior in any sphere develops not in isolation, but in interaction with others. Thus …. growth of learner autonomy is stimulated above all by interaction” (p. 256). Interaction in the classroom can be achieved through group work, pair work, large class discussion, etc. Outside the classroom, modern technologies have opened up many interactive options for the autonomous learner to continue his/her quest for knowledge. Carefully chosen activities that utilize technology effectively is one alternative open to teachers who wish to promote learner autonomy in the ESL classroom. This presentation will first give a brief definition and overview of learner autonomy, then look at the teacher’s role in promoting learner autonomy and finally, discuss some web-based activities that can be used to help promote learner autonomy.

Insight Dubai Conference

Each spring Dubai Women’s College hosts Insight Dubai, an interactive conference that brings together 60 young women from around the world and pairs them up with DWC students for five days of learning, sharing and growing together. Participants develop their global awareness, intercultural understanding and leadership skills through working together in small groups, listening to expert guest speakers and panelists, going on field trips and taking part in role plays and other simulations. The issues explored vary from year to year and include topics as diverse as inheritance under Sharia law, Arabic governance, promoting peace, and combating human trafficking.

Using IPad and IPod Applications as Assistive Technology for Individuals with Special Needs Workshop

The Special Needs Department at the Higher Colleges of Technology is inviting all interested people to attend a workshop entitled Using iPad and iPod Applications as Assistive Technology for Individuals with Special Needs, to be held on Monday April 2, 2012 from 9am-4pm at the Dubai Men’s College in room B104.

Workshop participants will learn evidence-based strategies to utilize the iPad as an educational tool for individuals with special needs.

The course includes a lecture and interactive opportunities to demonstrate applications in the areas of Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC); literacy and learning; social skills; and behavioral strategies.

The workshop’s featured speaker will be Angela Desideri, who is an internationally recognized Speech Language Pathologist. Angela specializes in the use of assistive technology for individuals with complex communication needs.

The workshop cost is AED150 per person and the maximum number of participants who can be accommodated is 50. Registration is on a first come first served basis.

eLearning in Action 2012

eLearning in Action is an event where teachers, eLearning developers and educational technology specialists from HCT and other educational institutions convene to share, connect, discuss and learn about the best ideas and technologies for eLearning. The aim of the conference is to provide a platform for teachers to demonstrate how technology has been employed to create pedagogically sound, meaningful learning opportunities for our students. The sessions will provide you with a chance to learn tips and tricks, explore new technologies, discuss best practices with your peers and view eLearning projects that have been successfully developed and implemented.

UAE Innovation Challenge

Following on from the huge success of the 2011 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle competition, in which teams from a number of HCT Colleges designed, built and flew their own UAVs, the HCT is again proud to collaborate with Northrop Grumman to present the 2012 UAE Innovation Challenge.

Once again HCT students will be invited to compete for major prizes and the honour of designing, building and flying their unique Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.
