Today, our very own Sen. Voinovich (R-OH) announced that he will vote with the Democrats to stop the Republican filibuster of the small-business assistance bill in the Senate. According to Sen. Voinovich, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was threatening a filibuster to coerce the Democratic majority into allowing the Republicans to offer more amendments.

In Sen. Voinovich’s own words, the amendments “didn’t have anything to do with the bill“, and were just partisan messaging (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/09/09/AR2010090903599_pf.html). Perhaps this is why George Voinovich famously announced his intention to retire from politics back in January of last year (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0109/17324.html), after expressing frustration over how his party abandoned the same US auto makers that today, with our own Governor Ted Strickland, unveiled the newest car to be “Made in Ohio“: the Chevrolet Cruze.

This is why it is so important for you to come out and help elect Democrats in Ohio this year. Please attend at least one of the canvassing events this weekend (details below) to help us get SW Ohio out to the polls this year. We need to break records, and only with your help will we be able to.

If we don’t “Get Out the Vote”, we will be left with a group of lawmakers that will squander our precious time with partisan “messaging” instead of helping small-businesses and families. What other distractions from fixing our economy, balancing the budget, and rebuilding our infrastructure could a Speaker Boehner lead a Congress ruled by the GOP into? Oh, let me count the ways: Investigations into President Obama’s citizenship, Investigations into ACORN, de-funding programs created by the health care reform package, de-funding SCHIP, de-funding Medicaid, privatizing social security, and the list goes on and on. Notice that some of the items in that list consist of “de-funding” or “privatizing” something. This means job cuts, which means more people get placed onto the unemployment roles, which means higher unemployment.

This is why it is so important to work with your local canvassing office this weekend to ensure people are registered to vote, know how they can vote (early vote vs. polling place vote), and most importantly that they pledge to vote. The 2008 election was not the culmination of our best efforts, it was the proof-of-concept. Below are the office locations for canvasses coming up this weekend:

• Bond Hill, Jordan’s Crossing, 7030 Reading Road, Cincinnati, OH
• Woodlawn, 10036 Springfield Pike, Cincinnati, OH
• Northside, 4044 Hamilton Avenue, Cincinnati, OH
• Pleasant Ridge, 6109 Webbland Place, Cincinnati, OH
• Westwood, 3502 Boudinot Avenue, Cincinnati, OH

Canvasses usually start at 11:00am and 1:00pm. If these times don’t work for you, please visit an office when you can between 10am and 4pm and organizers will be able to find a way for you to help increase voter turnout this year.

Additionally, President Bill Clinton will be in town this weekend to headline a rally in support of Lee Fisher, Ohio’s Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate. President Clinton knows that Lee Fisher will stand up and fight for Ohioans and Ohio’s interests in the U.S. Senate. He knows that Rob Portman will enable the Republican “No” machine that has been fighting tooth-and-nail to block all regulations and reform efforts intended to protect Ohio consumers, families, homeowners, and jobs, because that has been Rob Portman’s track record in Congress and while he worked in George W. Bush’s administration.

The details for the Bill Clinton event can be reached by visiting the following website:

Hello Young Democrat,

Maintaining control of the US House of Representatives is key to maintaining the recovery. Just this past week, the Institute for Supply Management reported that its manufacturing index increased again, marking the 16th straight month…

Hello Young Democrat,

Maintaining control of the US House of Representatives is key to maintaining the recovery. Just this past week, the Institute for Supply Management reported that its manufacturing index increased again, marking the 16th straight month that the manufacturing sector showed signs of growth. This is yet another sign that the efforts led by Democrats to end the recession and speed the recovery are beginning to pay dividends. We all know that recovery will take time, and a lot of management and proper regulation will ensure that we avoid another economic meltdown. However, the Republican party is not only downplaying the recovery, they, led by House Minority Leader John Boehner, are flat out denying its existence! At the same time, Chabot, Schmidt, and Boehner are championing a budget plan that slices into Medicare, peels back state Medicaid assistance, increases taxes on the lower incomes while giving huge tax cuts to the upper 5% of tax payers. If you think that this sounds like a recipe for disaster, you are not alone. Newsweek’s article breaks down the numbers in a pretty straightforward manner, and it becomes evident that the budget “road map” is nothing more than a repeat of the same failed priorities that got us to where we were in 2008. It is no surprise, then, that the Republican Party is going back to those good ol’ days by bringing back John Kasich, Steve Chabot, Rob Portman, and Mike DeWine (just to name a few), because if you want to revive the failed plans of the past, you may as well bring along the team that helped to forge them.

Last weekend, OFA volunteers across the country knocked on over 200,000 doors and phoned nearly 150,000 people in an effort to reach out to voters, and get people engaged this fall. We can’t stop there though, we need to do it again every weekend until the election day. We’re putting together a special event, open for free to the public, at the Ohio Coordinated Campaign office in Woodlawn (details below) to help get people engaged. Bring a friend or two to this event, where you’ll have the unique and exciting opportunity to meet Steve Driehaus (Rep. for OH-1), Justin Coussoule (candidate for OH-8, challenging Boehner), and Surya Yalamanchili (who’s challenging Jean Schmidt in OH-2). We’ll need your help again this weekend, so please sign up for a canvass in your area using My.BarackObama.Com.

The event that we’ve got planned for this Saturday is a rally/forum with the three congressional candidates in Southwest Ohio.

Time: 2:00pm-3:30pm on Saturday, Sept. 4th
Where: Ohio Coordinated Campaign regional office – 10036 Springfield Pk 45215

Attached is a flyer for the event that we’ve put together.

Be part of the new generation of Democratic Party Organizers in Ohio. You are the future!

The Ohio Democratic Party will be holding a NextGen Dems summit in Columbus at the Ohio Democratic Party headquarters on Saturday, August 7, from 8:30AM until 4:00PM. This is held prior to the ODP’s annual State Dinner. This summit is FREE to attend, and we strongly recommend HCYD members to attend the summit as well as the dinner.

This summit will focus on campus organizing and registration. You’ll learn how to reach out and make an impact on young college students who may or may not yet have entered the job market. Encouraging the college vote and closing the enthusiasm gap will be essential to a win in November for the entire slate of great Democratic candidates who are up for election this year.
