Entertaining without being over the top!

TL;DR: Visually stunning, action filled and down to earth action sequences (no over the top BS). Storyline with nice twists and pretty good for an action movie, though watching Ghost Protocol helps getting to know the IMF crew (there's no introduction this time around).

Rogue Nation, like the latest movies in the franchise and others in the spy/action genre, starts with a small crew, with little support, against huge odds, having to deal with challenges that seem impossible (no pun intended).

What makes Rogue Nation better than most is that it makes it all plausible without super-human characters, crazy gizmos (except one that I shaw not mention, but it is not overused like in M:I II), and brilliantly made down-to-earth action sequences. The latest 007 movies are following the same ideals, but M:I has made a solid choice of supporting actors (specially Simon Pegg) that add a subtle layer of comedy and improvisation, which helps a lot into building some suspense in the audience - it feels like as if they are as clueless as we are of what is going to happen.

Another great aspect that sets this moving apart are the terrific action sequences which are paired with outstanding sound effects and music score (without spoiling, there is an entire action sequence that plays with this very aspect). Was lucky enough to watch a pre-screening on IMAX, and strongly recommend watching it on IMAX or a theater with a good audio setup.

The storyline, while not hard to follow, benefits from having watched at least Ghost Protocol, since key characters are back and lack some introduction, and the story somewhat picks from what took place in the last instance. Much like Ghost Protocol, the storyline packs some interesting twists and doesn't seem obvious - even though we all know that the good guys win, Rogue Nation adds some shady characters which are not as black and white, making for some interesting development.

Overall a highly entertaining movie, packed with stunning action sequences and a storyline that is well thought-out and manages to keep the audience hooked until the end. A solid addition to the franchise that keeps one-upping itself on every new release.

Very good tale of redemption with a KO performance from Jake Gyllenhaal

As with most sports dramas, Southpaw is a film more about the man than the sport. Labelled by many as the 'modern day Raging Bull', I had high hopes for Southpaw and thanks to Jake Gyllenhaal, it duly delivered. This is a tale of one man's path to redemption through boxing.

Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) is the Light Heavyweight champion of the world and a boxer known for his unique style and impressive fight record. When his wife, Maureen (Rachel McAdams), is shot dead following a scuffle with title contender Miguel Escobar (Miguel Gomez), both Billy's career and personal life go in a downward spiral that sees him both lose his boxing licence and his daughter, Leila (Oona Laurence), to child protection services.

Billy turns to trainer Tick Wills (Forest Whitaker) to help him get his life back on track. Carry on down the same path and Billy could lose his daughter forever however, putting his focus into a return to boxing could see Billy regain everything he lost after the death of his wife.

As mentioned before, the film focuses more on the man than the sport however, Southpaw is one of the only boxing dramas I have seen where the sport of boxing actually feels like a character in the film, not just a backdrop for the drama.

Southpaw does become a bit predictable and features quite a few clichés, which can't be helped in this genre, but director Antoine Fuqua does a good job in making sure Southpaw has a bit of a cutting edge to it. This is a hard hitting drama that isn't scared to throw the hardest of punches at its audience.

After leaving the cinema, I read that Eminem had been lined up for the role of Billy Hope when the film first came into production. How different a film that would have been. I could not be more thankful that the studio decided not to follow through with that and instead decided to cast Gyllenhaal in the role instead.

Gyllenhaal is an actor who makes it clear that he takes his roles very seriously and you can see that from the transformation he has put his body through, becoming almost unrecognisable from the skinny Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler. His gruelling six month training regime certainly makes him look like a boxer but his decision to learn the boxing techniques means he moves like a boxer too, making the performance even more authentic.

The transformation would mean absolutely nothing without the performance to match though. As expected, Gyllenhaal gives an absolute powerhouse of a performance in Southpaw that really raises the quality of the film because without him, this would be quite an average film. I struggle to think of an actor right now on a hotter streak in Hollywood than Gyllenhaal.

Forest Whitaker, as usual, adds a quality to proceedings and Rachel McAdams does a fine job in her small role, which would have been better if we hadn't seen her characters outcome in the trailers. Oona Laurence gives an impressive performance as the young Leila and I didn't even mind 50 Cent or Rita Ora being cast in the film.

The boxing sequences are very good as well, with the use of POV shots in particular injecting the sequences with adrenaline and making the audience feel every single punch thrown.

While Southpaw isn't the masterpiece that Raging Bull is, it certainly sees Fuqua make his best film since Training Day. Led by another top performance from Gyllenhaal, maybe Southpaw will make the voters this awards season stand up and take notice of his talent, not ignore it like they did with Nightcrawler.

Back to the Jurassic world

I was surprised to hear this movie was coming to the big screen considering how disappointing the last outing Jurassic Park 3 was. My recommendation is that if you haven't seen any of the original 3 movies (unlikely but possible ?) don't be tempted to now, watch this and it will be all the more enjoyable, well they say ignorance is bliss ! Of course you probably have seen the original and best film from 1993 and even the still very enjoyable JP2 of 1997 which this film compares favourably to. It is leaps and bounds better than JP3 of 2001 which was inevitable because that film was scraping the barrel for ideas. The CGI has improved quite a bit and that is where the money has been spent I guess (another £100 000 000 film !) with the added bonus of 3D which I thought was really good. OK the story is obviously predictable , we aren't expecting all the dinosaurs to stay in their pens and behave themselves are we !? The newish ideas come in the form that we have trained the dinos to be more entertaining a bit like sea-world and for that extra wow factor that is of course needed we have a new chimera of a dinosaur in Indominus-rex a real badass monster who inevitably runs amok. There are some funny and romantic moments dropped in here and there and of course the baddies in the background with their own agendas for the dinosaurs. Chris Pratt shows us again how entertaining he can be as the action hero and will obviously be doing more comedy action in future. BD Wong is again the scientist from the original 1993 film, it would have been nice to see Sam Neil but you can't have everything ,maybe JP3 scared him or should I say scarred him ? Anyway ,if you want to see an action packed entertaining big blockbuster of a movie go and see Mad Max Fury Road, if you want to see an entertaining action movie about dinosaurs , Jurassic World is a good option.

Trainwreck Delivers a Full Force Crushingly Funny Comedy

In Trainwreck, (2015) Amy Schumer plays Amy (convenient), a 30 something serial dater with a strong opposition to commitment. She works as a writer for a men's magazine S'nuff, a playoff magazines like Stuff or Maxim. Her hard drinking, hard partying lifestyle is interrupted when a writing assignment has her meet Aaron (Bill Hader), a successful sports injury surgeon. We are left to see if true love can make this party girl see the error of her ways, amongst the obstacles of personal and professional misfortune. I am an Amy Schumer fan. I first heard her standup Cutting on Pandora, and have been on board ever since. Her television show, Inside Amy Schumer is in my humble opinion the closest Comedy Central has come to filling the sketch comedy gap left after Dave Chappell stepped away from the spotlight. Live and in person Amy does not disappoint either. I have seen her twice, each time she killed. So when I first saw the trailer for Trainwreck with Judd Apatow at the directing helm, I was giddy with anticipation. Now usually in my heightened anticipation like this, there is a hard or sometimes mediocre let down, not here. Trainwreck delivers a great comedy. Amy wrote the screenplay herself before Apatow was signed on. So Amy's brand of humor is the full driving force of Trainwreck. As a fan of Amy's stand up material, I did notice a stand up bit she does, brought to life in a scene involving a baby shower and a game of skeletons in the closet. Very funny stuff. Several other stand ups and ex SNL cast appear in this film as an added treat. My favorite is comedian Dave Attell as a homeless guy. Wrestler tuned action movie actor John Cena is scene stealer in this film as well. It's hilarious the way he plays fun with his ultra-macho image in this role. This film never ventures outside the painfully predictable conventions of a standard chick flick. It even pokes playful fun at itself as it does its obligatory falling in love montage of Amy and Aaron doing cutesy couple stuff in Central Park. Although in movies like this, the plot is just cheap cardboard packaging for the jokes and gags. It is essentially a reverse gender role version Jerry Maguire (1996), as far as the pacing, format and sport star cameos. Shout out to Tony Romo, LeBron James and Amar'e Stoudemire for better performances than Bret Farve's classic "I'm in town to play to the Dolphins, you dumb ass" in Something About Mary (1998). Amy's acting in this film is surprisingly believable in the emotional moments of this film. Nothing Oscar worthy, but for a freshman effort it's passable. This movie has heart, charm and re-watchability. If you own Bridesmaids (2011) you will no doubt want to add Trainwreck to your collection. What Amy and Judd have done is capture the chick flick audience and the guy comedy audience and made a hybrid film. If audiences bite, this could be the monster comedy hit of the summer. Not a film for the entire family by any means, there is sex, drugs and 4 letter words galore, but if you are a fan of sophomoric fun this is a must see. A Final Bow

It's been nearly a year since we lost Robin Williams to a long-standing bout of depression that eventually led to his suicide. This led to an enormous outcry of grief all over the celebrity and social media world from those who had grown up on his movies, television and standup and caused many to reflect on this talent that we had perhaps taken for granted. No one can deny that his movies weren't always diamonds, but his work in them was almost always admirable and memorable. The fact that he spent the last couple of years of his life giving great performances in terrible little-seen direct to VOD films ("The Angriest Man In Brooklyn", "A Merry Friggin' Christmas"), with the occasional cameo in something truly awful ("The Big Wedding"), is a rather tragic thought. But fortunately, with Dito Montiel's newly released film Boulevard, Williams goes out strong, if not quite on top.

Williams plays Nolan, a man who's stuck in your typical indie-film marriage, i.e. loveless. He's friendly and cordial with his wife, but is clearly missing something vital. One night he's driving home and spots a group of gay hookers on the sidewalk and after nearly accidentally running one over, he befriends him and starts to confront his closeted homosexuality.

He gets advice from his friend Winston, played by Bob Odenkirk, who brings all the levity and spontaneity that you'd hope for from the guy who plays Saul Goodman in a role that could have felt a tad superfluous. He's clearly only in the movie to give Nolan a person off which to bounce his thoughts, but with an actor like Odenkirk in the role, it's hard to complain about such matters.

If you feel like you've seen this film before, you probably have. We've seen this suburbia set-up many times over the last couple of decades, so when a film goes for this, you really have to count on strong performances and interesting surprises to make it worth your while. Thanks to Williams' tender, vulnerable, aching performance, the film always stays on the side of watchable, and often fascinating. An electronic synthesizer score often tends to call too much attention to itself and distract from the fine performances by not just Williams, but also Roberto Aguire as Leo, the young man whom Nolan befriends. Fortunately though, once the film firmly establishes what it's about, such distracting little director quirks either ceased altogether, or just stopped bothering me.

Certainly for someone like me, a huge fan of his work, it's impossible to watch Williams play such a sad, morose character and not be reminded of what happened shortly after this film was finished. It's just unavoidable. But thankfully, that would just be me reading too much into the story. The man was an actor, and an excellent one at that. Remove all of the comedies from his resume, and you're still left with one of the most impressive collections of dramatic performances in recent memory. This film is no exception. Every time he smiles to avoid confronting the pain and confusion that Nolan feels so strongly, we don't question him in the slightest bit. When we see him look at Leo with his expression of sorrow and pity, it's impossible not to feel right there with him.

It may not be best film of Williams' career, and it's a real shame that he never experienced the ultra renaissance that I'm sure was on the horizon for him, but as a film for an actor of this stature to go out on, he could have done much worse than "Boulevard".

Not so bad

Nice to see a clean film for once, no nudity or cursing and no boring gory overload like saw movies.

It made me jump a little, and it had a few brief humor moments that was different.

not a fan of movies filmed like this though, the camera made me wanna throw up, by the end i was nauseated and had a headache that was trying to split my skull open.

But on the horror level it actually wasn't that bad. I would've preferred waiting until i could watch it at home though, the only benefit to the theater was watching and hearing others jump and scream at the stupidest moments!

Lacks Heart, but All Ages should be Entertained,

Minions is a great movie with a well developed storyline and a terrific voice cast. Despite people's love for these characters, it seemed like a big risk to give the minions their own solo movie, for the fact that they can't speak, but it worked out very well and is probably one of the most impressive spin off movies to date, something Hiollywood have gotten right on very few occasions, the characters are very lovable and we genuinely care for them and support them in their journey. It suffers from the same problem a lot of these animated spin offs have (Penguins of Madagascar, Puss in Boots, etc.), it dosen't have as much heart as the movies it is spun off from have, no scenes that warm the audiences heart and make us feel sympathetic towards the characters to the same degree we do for Gru and his daughters, this is something I think should always be evident in animated films and it is a huge loss when it isn't. The voice cast is outstanding and certainly the highlight of the movie, Peter Coffin is obviously superb as every single minion, and there are also great roles from Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney and Geoffrey Rush, who all sounded like they really enjoyed delivering these characters dialogue and wern't just in it for the pay check. It's certainly not perfect, but Minions is definitely a very fun and enjoyable ride that I would recommend to anyone looking for a good family film.

After searching for someone to serve, the Minions become recruits for Scarlet Overkill, who hatches a plan to take over England, and eventually the world.
