We have to take issue with calling the 2.5-inch driver in each satellite a "woofer," and just hope that Boston Acoustics isn't trying to get into a race for the "smallest speakers available that don't fit in your ears" <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/05/22/sonys-5-1-channel-ht-is100-htib-touts-golf-ball-sized-satellite/">title</a>. Most consumers don't want to convert their home PCs into media centers. That doesn't stop them from wanting a single device serving as both their TV and PC, however. That's where the 22- and 32-inch Bristol ViewSurfer PC/TVs carve out their niche. Each set features a FreeView tuner and an integrated, netbook-like, Atom-based Windows XP computer with 160GB of storage, 1GB of memory, 4x USB, and Ethernet. The PC lacks integrated WiFi, oddly enough, and the TV seems to function in complete isolation from the computer processing -- so no integrated DVR, for example. The £500 (about $814) 22-inch model does feature a 1680 x 1050 pixel resolution, well above the 1024 x 600 display found in most netbooks. Not that you'll be pushing Flash-based video from YouTube or BBC's iPlayer full-screen as these ViewSurfers are undoubtedly saddled with Intel's integrated <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/945gse">945GSE</a> netbook graphics. Bristol remains mum about the specs on the 32 incher. The no-frills enclosures would definitely be a hard sell in most domiciles -- unless you live in the Bat Cave or something -- but the bass performance is nothing to sneeze at. The latest IDS12-I mates a 12-inch INFRA cone to a 220-Watt onboard amp to deliver flat response all the way down to 18Hz. Pretty impressive for a little 15x18x15-inch box, and more than enough to rock the Shire, eh? Still, even with a claimed 231% jump over last year's YTD figures, that hasn't offset a 9.5% drop in sales of DVDs. that should move the needle well past <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/10/20/blu-ray-disc-sales-up-396-year-to-date-in-uk/">last year's figures,</a> where only 1.5 million were reportedly moved by October, but we doubt that's much comfort to employees of the nearly 900 retailers that have closed this year. Of course this time is no different as TiVo is offering up to $100 off a TiVo HD to existing Series 1 or 2 owners. So you probably figured out the catch by now, which is that if you have lifetime on your existing TiVo, you can't transfer it. If you log in and try the site actually suggests you give away your older TiVo or recycle it. It seems that TiVo knows there aren't any alternatives so what are you going to do if you're treated like crap? For its part, <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/dishnetwork">TiVo</a> repeated its praise of the "thorough and well-reasoned decision finding EchoStar in contempt of court for violating the injunction and awarding further damages" and is confident the ruling will be upheld, again. Still, at €500 (about $708 US) for the whole kit, it's not a bad deal if you planned on spending your weekend doing projects anyway. All the pieces come in four separate bundles -- HD optic, light, housing, and electronics -- and if you need some handholding (it's okay, so do we), there's a German-language instruction manual that's thankfully full of pictures and diagrams, and even more entertaining, we've got a video / picture slideshow of the process done to a playful techno ditty. That's thanks to the fact that Azentech is going to start shipping its X-FI HomeTheater HD sound card by the end of July -- no word on the price. Unfortunately just like the <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/xonar">ASUS Xonar</a> before it, you'll still need a separate video card for a complete solution. From there you'll connect the X-FI to your HDTV via <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/HDMI13/">HDMI 1.3</a> to enjoy your choice of bitstream or PCM lossless audio. You can even use analog outputs if you desire as well as other sources. There's also a pair of HDMI sockets, a DVI port and a 1,680 x 1,050 resolution, not to mention an automatic brightness sensor that responds to ambient light. Reported by <em>Video Business</em> and <em>Financial Times</em>, it seems like the studio is trying to save cash as the DVD market shrinks while Blu-ray and other distribution methods <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/06/15/analyst-blu-ray-cant-stop-video-sales-slump-sees-modest-growt/">aren't yet picking up the slack</a>. We're not sure if home viewers would notice any difference from such a deal, but with titles like <em>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen</em> and <em>Monsters vs. Aliens</em> releasing later this year it's worth keeping an eye on, if only for the slim possibility of history repeating itself and Paramount promising exclusive <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/cbhd">China Blue HD</a> format <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/08/21/the-ny-times-is-reporting-that-paramount-and-dreamworks-were-pai/">support in return for a huge bundle of incentives</a>. You either need to pay a monthly subscription or you need to get a CableCARD from your provider and give up access to other features your provider offers that you pay for. There are a few exceptions and the newest one is from Dish Network in the way of the DTVPal DVR. It doesn't require a monthly subscription, or even a cable or satellite provider because it works with free over-the-air TV. It does HD, has two tuners, and a 250GB hard drive; all for the reasonable price of $250. No word if sports hooliganism will be supported in this iteration, but judging from the screens the avatar support should also mirror its UK counterpart. This is likely not the end of tie-ups between the two either, with the partnership planned to eventually encompass other Canal Plus & Microsoft products. Specifically, why doesn't the <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/mtv">MTV</a> or VH1 HD simulcast channel air music videos in high definition? While it was news to us that MTV even aired music videos anymore, it's sad to see how poorly its handling the simulcast channel, though we don't have reception at this branch of the EHD HQ yet, word is they couldn't even keep simple things like the <em>Real World</em> HD broadcast straight last season. That's no surprise for a network that treats its simulcast like a redheaded stepchild (try finding a mention of it on MTV.com or Viacom's website) and staunchly refuses to loose any details of precisely which shows will be broadcast in high definition no matter how many times we ask, and we'll not even get into the endless loop of repeated programming that has become <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/palladia">Palladia</a>. We apologize for any inconvenience." Some odd glitch related to the recent 2.80 firmware update or other temporary problem, or is this the latest platform to <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/03/06/hulu-blocks-boxee-browser-entirely-gloves-get-ripped-halfway-of/">get the Boxee treatment</a> when trying to bring streaming video to TV screens? We've reached out to Hulu for an explanation but so far, haven't heard a response. Now let us tell you, we've been through more programmable remotes then most people know exist and we still have yet to find one we're satisfied with. All that being said, we just can't believe that it's been well over a full year since capacitive touch screen devices have been readily available to consumers and no one other than Apple seems to understand the potential. As cool as touch screen interfaces look, for the most part they down right stink at controlling anything in a home theater. The root of the problem is that most require you to look at 'em, instead of the HDTV. This is such a bad idea on so many levels, but most of all, it doesn't work because just drawing a regular remote with buttons on a screen really defeats the entire point.
