In ‘The Heat of the Moment’ an article by George Monbiot, published in the Guardian on 28th August 2012 he states ‘Climate breakdown is right here, right now’. Robert Skrzynski – Experimental Poland 1960 – 2012

As you could tell from the title of this mix, today’s podcast is experimental in nature. The selection of the acts comes courtesy of Robert Skrzyński, experimental sound and video artist from Poland, and spans some of the most essential Polish recordings between 1960 and 2012. This showcase features music by Polish Radio Experimental Studio recovered from archives by Bôłt, experiments with tape by Tomasz Sikorski, recorded in 1975, as well as selections from some of the most prominent Polish avant-garde and electro-acoustic bands. The mix also includes pieces by such modern Polish acts like Szymon Kaliski, Tomasz Bednarczyk and Wolfram, who should be already familiar to you from their releases on Monotype, Audiomoves and Few Quiet People. The great works of classical music were complex harmonic structures but still needed rhythm and repetition primarily as a means to give them form. If you’re a follower of ambient, experimental and abstract music, chances are that you have a favorite album from Machinefabriek. Rutger Zuydervelt is extremely prolific, producing close to a dozen albums, collaborations and EPs per year! I don’t even know when he found the time to make this exclusive mix for Headphone Commute! And a unique one at that. Either displaying a primal energy, or sublte micro-sound textures, the scope of possibilities of a drumkit (when played by a good drummer) is almost endless. Maybe if I thought about this a decade or two ago, I would have taken drum lessons and be a good drummer by now, but that never happened. Instead, I attempted to make a solo drum record by recording drums and then painstakingly editing and layering it for an entire album. This will be released by Eat, Sleep, Repeat later this year. I discovered Herd's sound only last year, when he released another installment in his Tangents series on Future Sound of London‘s own label, fsoldigital. I’ll be honest, being a huge fan of everything FSOL since the early 90s, I was immediately blown away! This mix is a nod to the legendary 3D Headspace and ISDN transmissions which were broadcast by The Future Sound of London in the mid to late 1990s. These soundscapes as well as the Radio One Essential mixes were what inspired me to begin making music many years later. It took me years to really learn to appreciate it. In 2009, Hawgood managed to publish eight releases, and this year he’s already on the way with another five! I spent a whole weekend enveloped in drones, early morning soundscapes, and experimental ambient music. And then I came up with a way to thank Ian. The following is a one hour mix composed entirely out of my favorite selections from Home Normal releases. It’s a perfect label sampler, if you will, showcasing the artist roster from one of the important, up and coming labels.

Hecq - Mixtape One

Oi oi oi! Do I have a treat for you! I'm about to set off for a two week vacation, but before I go, I want to present you with an amazing mix from none other than Ben Lukas Boysen, aka Hecq! As you could have already guessed from these pages, I am a big fan of Hecq's dark and crunchy IDM and his amazing modern classical compositions. I usually end up including at least one of his tracks in most of my mixes. In the beginning of this year I sang praise to his latest album, Steeltongued (Hymen, 2009), following up with Two and a Half Questions With Hecq. In 2008, his Night Falls (Hymen, 2008) album arrived at Tier 1 of our Absolute Musts, in Headphone Commute's Best of 2008. And when I revisited the Top 50 of 2007, his album, 0000 (Hyman, 2007) showed up on the list once again. Even the owner of Tympanik Audio, Paul Nielsen, has revealed that he would be honored to have a release by Hecq on his label, in our Tympanik Audio Label Profile. Enough said? The original purpose behind this mix was to compile some of my favorite modern classical recordings of 2008. As I progressed through adding tracks one after another, this one hour compilation turned into a journey, full of dark passageways, creaking stairways, and dusty light. Traversing the abandoned cathedral that houses this sound, one can imagine unlocking cobweb doors to reveal sighing ghosts and distant echoes. The mood changes from dark to light, from evil to beautiful, from present to nostalgic. I have finally decided to share this music, because the featured artists here deserve recognition and my highest regards. HC - Intelligent Breakcore

This mix has been in the making for quiet some time. Maybe not in its actuality, but at least in my head. It all started when I was compiling Headphone Commute's Best of 2008 list at the end of December last year. I wanted to select some of my favorite tracks and create hour-long sessions. That lead into separation of genres into Modern Classical, Organic Ambient, and this one, Intelligent Breakcore. Of course, I'm about six months overdue now, but that only allowed me for squeeze in a few of 2009 releases. A-n-y-w-a-y...
