This is my 1st post here on headwayexpert.com,
Corey asked me if I would be interested in providing headway tutorials
and I of course jumped at the idea

In this video I will cover how to setup and use custom post types with the headway theme.

Fun Facts About This Video

• The website I was upgrading was for my Mom, who creates interior design soft products (pillows, curtains, duvet covers, etc.)
• I have never used Theme Test Drive before this video.
• I was going to make a video about adding a favicon to 3.0.5 when I realized Mom’s site was running the old version of HW.
• This is my first non-child-theme website with Headway, since I wanted to stray from using too much CSS.
• I forgot to go back to wp-admin–>appearance–>themes and click “activate” on 3.0.5 so the live site is using it too.

This problem can be fixed with some simple CSS. Copy and paste the following code into the Live CSS editor or into your child theme’s style.css file:

}

Now you can have a twitter button and working design! Woohoo!

Headway Expert Gets a MakeOver

In just over a month, HE has reached over 1200 unique visitors and over 9,000 pageviews (It’s over 9000!). Sadly the current design, while pretty, doesn’t lend itself to being as helpful as it could be. So in the wake of giving you 10,000 words to run through, I’ll be rebuilding the website and updating some tutorials that were offset by Headway 3.0.4.

So yeah. I’ll see you next week, and go ahead and grab the guide.

Adsense is the most basic way to monetize your content, and putting ads right into the post content makes it extremely visible. In this code snippet, I’m going to show you how to embed adsense into your content automatically with PHP. Let’s assume that you’ve already got your adsense code ready.

Copy and paste the following code into your functions.php file:

Replace the <!–Adsense Code–> with your actual javascript code.

Changing the Alignment with CSS

Now you might want it to align properly within the content. That’s easy using a bit of css. Copy and paste the following code into your style.css file in your child theme:

body.custom .entry-ads {float: left; display: inline; border: 1px solid #ddd; margin-right: 10px;}
body.custom .entry-content {margin-top: 0px;}

The first line of code aligns our ad block to the left, and the second line makes the content line up vertically with the ads. You can also change “float: left;” to “float: right;” and “margin-right” to “margin-left” to change the alignment to the other side.

By default, Headway displays links at the bottom of your blog posts on the single posts page that show the names of the previous and next post. They look like this (click to enlarge):

Obviously if you have long post titles like on my personal blog, there’s going to be overlap. So it would be helpful to modify the links to say something like “next post” and “previous post.” We can do that by adding two functions to our functions.php file in a child theme. Copy and paste the following code into your functions.php file:

The first function is used to customize the “next” link. The second function is used to customize the “previous” link.

All you really need to modify is the plain text “Next Post”, “Previous Post” to fit your blog or your language.

For the purposes of this tutorial, I’ve removed the ASCII code for those little arrows that usually appear. You can find special characters to use here.

It’s kind of hard to describe in text, but you follow these steps to enter multiple block movement mode:

1. Double click on a block you want to move.
2. Double click on other blocks you want to move.
3. Move said blocks.
4. Click the little “x” button on the mass selection message to exit the mode.

Aj Morris of the Headway Team totally did a tutorial about mass block movement today too. You can check it out here. His is two-minutes longer giving him time to talk about hitting the ESC button for exiting and de-selecting blocks by double clicking on them again.

Give Us Your URL and Describe the Problem as Calmly as Possible

If you’ve ever had a computer just up and shut down on you, then you know the feeling of a complete and utterly frustrating problem that has to be fixed right now. The problem is that as a support provider, it’s hard to distinguish what’s “this should work WTH I’m so angry” from the “I think my hard drive got water on it.” Put plainly:

Describe the problem as calmly as possible.

After doing so, link us to your website. I’m talking the full http://mysite.com/. If it’s on a specific page, link to that specific page.

Always include the FULL URL. This is to make it easier for us to get to your site, as opposed to copying&pasting URLs without the http or with that weird xxx.mysite.com formatting. Nobody will be angry. Go ahead and link that site!

Take Your Website Off Maintenance Mode

The number one thing that makes it easier to diagnose a problem on a website is to see it for ourselves. If possible, take your website off of maintenance mode or a “coming soon” page so we can see the problem first-hand.

(Consulting) Have Specific Questions Ready

If you’ve only got a certain block of time to get support or if you’re doing a consulting session, have a list of specific questions/problems ready.

This means something like “how do I make a static front page” as opposed to “How do I make a website like headwaythemes.com?”

When it comes to broad questions, there’s not a good place to start and we might answer the wrong issue. Knowing what you want solved cuts down on the confusion and makes solutions easier & faster.

Please Don’t Private Message/Email Members with Support Questions

This one is going to sound weird, because you’d think speaking “directly” to a certain member would be more efficient. Believe me when I say you will get an answer faster if you don’t private message/email a support member directly without being prompted first. To that extent, if you want 1-on-1 help/support from me personally, please please please set up an appointment.

When you post a problem on the forums, two things happen. First, other headway users can help you. There are thousands of them and although they don’t work for Headway directly, some are just as willing to assist as the paid staff. Secondly, the paid staff is paid to view all of the posts. Every single issue in the forums is viewed by a support team member.

Create a New Thread for Your Questions/Concerns

Sometimes it looks like another member is having the same issue as you are. They probably aren’t. Websites, like well-driven cars, all have minor variations and different circumstances where they might break down. Because of this, you should always create a new thread to ask about your website.

As a side-note, it usually makes it harder for the OP (original poster) to get their answer if you “jump in” with your own questions. Don’t worry about causing “clutter.” Go ahead and make a new post!

Hopefully these tips make using the support forums easier. Incidentally, if you aren’t using the support forums, give it a try. The team members are ready to help!
