type='text'>Small changes, big results

If your New Year’s resolution was to lose weight, don’t despair; it does not have to be stressful or complicated! The secret to success is taking one small step at a time.

It’s the end of January and most people’s New Year resolutions have already failed dismally – again! If your New Year’s resolution was to lose weight, don’t despair; it does not have to be stressful or complicated! The secret to success is taking one small step at a time. A few simple changes could make a big difference – over the long term.

We tend to forget that habits (both good and bad) are formed over years, and can’t expect to make a dozen changes in just a few weeks. According to experts, changing or forming a new habit takes at least 30 days and re-affirming the new habit requires another 30 days. The best way to achieve your goal is to break it down into small parts.

One reason small changes to habits work is because you build success quickly, experts say. Each time you follow through on a small habit, you build your confidence and feel more in control. As one habit becomes routine, you can add another small one to it. And soon those small habits turn into a big lifestyle change that you can be really proud of.

Here are four simple changes you could try – one at a time. This way you won't feel overwhelmed. With time, these changes will not only improve your health; they will also help to melt away the extra kilos.

Eat more fruit and vegetables. If you’ve never liked fruit and vegetables much, you can’t expect to start munching away on these foods all day long, forgetting about the existence of the less healthy snacks overnight. Start your new habit by eating one piece of fruit for breakfast and including at least one vegetable for lunch or dinner. Visit your nearest fresh produce market and choose a few brightly coloured fruits and veggies. Not everyone likes all fruit and vegetables, but by experimenting you are bound to find something you like. Gradually increase your portions per day, until you reach your 5-a-day requirement. Popular fruits to try are: strawberries, watermelon, bananas, apples, grapes, pineapple and sweet melon. When it comes to veggies, easy pleasers include carrots, baby tomatoes, cucumber, peas, sweet potato and mealies.

Stop drinking kilojoules. Fizzy drinks, sweetened tea and coffee, alcohol and even fruit juice are high in kilojoules – liquid kilojoules. Yes, even “healthy” fruit juice can be a kilojoule trap. Instead of drinking orange juice, for example, rather eat the fruit. The fresh orange will not only give you more nutrients, it will also fill you up more because of the fibre content. Many cups of sweetened coffee and tea, as well as alcohol contain lots of sugar which significantly adds to your daily kilojoule/energy intake. Rather fill up on water. Water is the perfect kilojoule-free weight-loss drink, while keeping your body hydrated and functioning in top form.

Plan your meals and remember to pack healthy snacks for work. If you plan in advance, you will be less tempted to buy quick kilojoule-laden fixes at the vending machine or corner shop. Opt for whole grains, low-fat protein, nuts, seeds, fruit and veg. Regular healthy snacks will also help to keep the hunger pangs at bay and make fatty, sugar snacks less appealing. Best of all, packing your own food will help you save money!

Get daily exercise. If you haven’t exercised for a while, start with just 10 minutes a day. It can be a brisk walk around the block, only taking the stairs at work, doing jumping jacks or rediscovering the fun of a skipping rope at home. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s a fun activity that you are willing to do once every day – whether morning, noon or night. Ten minutes of exercise might not sound like much, but it is far easier to achieve than attempting one-hour gym sessions from day one. Exercise helps to burn kilojoules, tone your body and up your energy levels. Soon you will feel more confident – and ready to increase your daily activity with five-minute additions until you can do 30 minutes a day comfortably.

These are just four suggestions. There are many more simple ideas, such as eating breakfast every day, cutting your salt intake and avoiding fatty, fried foods. Will they take you from overweight to slim and sexy in a month? No, of course not! But these small changes will all act as building blocks to gradual and sustainable changes, leading to permanent weight loss and a healthier lifestyle.

View the original article here

This post was made using the Auto Blogging Software from <a href='http://www.webmagnates.org' title'make money online'>WebMagnates.org This line will not appear when posts are made after activating the software to full version.

Top tips to downsize your portions

As portions have supersized over the years, so have our waistlines. Did you know that a large coffee shop muffin can equal up to five slices of bread? Here's help.

South Africans are eating too much and they’re eating the wrong foods. As portions have grown larger over the past decades, so have South Africans. Statistics show that increasing numbers of South Africans are overweight or obese with the problem at its worst among adult women and preschool children.

According to dietitian Celynn Erasmus, we are being hoodwinked into eating more than they need. "Dietitians refer to this trend as 'portion creep' as it takes only an additional 1 000 kilojoules (240 calories) a day to gain about 10kg over a year. 1 000 kilojoules are equivalent to a 50g chocolate bar, a sparsely buttered bread roll, a small kiddies milkshake, a quarter of a tramezzini or a small portion of 10 chips."

Many South Africans eat food prepared by someone else more than we realise - be it eating out, using the cafeteria at work every day, having take-aways, dinner parties and lunch with family.

Eating away from home is often difficult and means less control over the food that is available. According to the 2012 Sanhanes report (South African National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) 28.3% of South Africans eat outside the home every week.

Test yourself

Dietitian Karlien Smit says that people often overeat when there is a large selection of food available, like finger foods at cocktail parties, picnics and buffets. "Dish up a small plate of snacks and then move away from the food; focus instead on conversation with other guests."

According to Johannesburg-based dietitian, Cheryl Meyer, many people are not familiar with the appropriate serving sizes. "Everyone should test themselves every now and again – pour your usual bowl of cereal and then transfer it to a measuring cup!"

She suggests always using smaller plates, bowls and glasses allowing for less food on the plate and encouraging better portion control. "And never eat out of the box – put your snack in a small bowl or other container or alternatively opt for single-serving treat."

'Sharing is caring'

Supersizing is all around us. A coffee shop muffin can be equal to five slices of buttered bread and jam and provides almost 5000 kilojoules if served with a small portion of cheese, jam and a pad of butter. Sobering if you consider that an average adult woman that are inactive should consume only 6 400 kilojoules daily to maintain her weight.

Even salads can be distorted. Although perceived as healthy, those with generous protein toppings and dressing can be equivalent to a restaurant main meal. Dietitian Brigitte LeClercq suggests always asking for separate dressing, so you can control how much is used.

Celynn Erasmus says: "Sharing is caring – don’t buy into the idea that what the restaurant is serving you is an appropriate amount of food to eat as it is possible you are getting three to four servings at one meal. Most restaurant meals or take-aways can in fact be shared between two people."

Rather than cutting out food groups and going on extreme deprivation diets, South Africans should learn to downsize when they eat out, but also at home, where they have complete control over portion sizes, cooking methods and the type of food they eat.

Water at every meal

Dietitian, Mariam Forgan suggests including water at every meal as the body confuses thirst with hunger. "A tall glass before and a tall glass of water during the meal will make you feel fuller faster, avoiding over indulgence. "

Association for Dietetics in South Africa (Adsa) spokesperson, Maryke Gallagher’s top tips include: don’t cook more than what the family will eat otherwise everyone will have seconds and maybe thirds; eat slowly, so that you eat less; never place dishes of food on the table when having dinner and don’t keep unhealthy snacks somewhere visible – out of sight, out of mind!

Apart from using smaller plates and bowels, dietitian Jade Campbell suggests that lean protein portions should not be bigger than a deck of cards, carbohydrates the size of a tennis ball and fat the size of a dice – and don’t forget that half your plate should be filled with salads or vegetables!

View the original article here

This post was made using the Auto Blogging Software from <a href='http://www.webmagnates.org' title'make money online'>WebMagnates.org This line will not appear when posts are made after activating the software to full version.

Daily exercise does wonders for kids' health

In an after-school exercise programme that included 70 minutes of physical activity five times per week kids lost body fat and improved their heart and lung health.

A nine-month after-school exercise programme helped young kids lose body fat and improve heart and lung strength compared to kids who didn't do the programme, according to a new trial.

It's clear that activity is good for kids, lead author Naiman A. Khan told Reuters Health. But he was surprised at just how much of a difference this programme made.

"We saw their overall body fat, abdominal fat go down, and in the absence of the programme kids actually increased in overall body fat," said Khan, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Moderate to vigorous physical activity

For their study, the researchers randomly divided 220 kids ages eight and nine into two groups. One group participated in the FITKids programme, which includes 70 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity five times per week for nine months, and the other group did not.

In the exercise group, kids did 20 to 25 minutes of health-related fitness activities plus 50 minutes of organised non-competitive games meant to keep their hearts beating at 55 to 80% of their maximum heart rate. That's higher than most previous exercise studies have aimed for, which may be why this study got such good results, according to Dianne Stanton Ward of the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health in Chapel Hill.

Ward studies obesity prevention in children. She was not involved in the new research. During exercise, kids wore heart rate watches so the researchers could monitor their activity levels.

After nine months, the kids in the exercise group had lost an average of close to one percent of their total body fat and more than one percent of the fat around their belly area, as reported in Paediatrics. Both kids who were a healthy weight and overweight or obese kids lost fat mass, but overweight or obese kids tended to lose a bit more relative to their starting size.

Staying active

Kids in the comparison group gained a small amount of fat over the nine-month period, and didn't get any more or less fit. The researchers "did a lot of things right in this study", including measuring physical fitness as well as body composition, Ward told Reuters Health.

The results indicate that staying active at this age influences the development of body fat and produces measurable changes in physical fitness. "And the kids must have had fun, because they didn't have to do this," she said, noting that few kids skipped days of the programme.

"It doesn't really matter the particulars of what the kids are doing as long as they get up to a moderate or vigorous heart rate," Ward said. Better fitness means a healthier heart and increased bone density, too, she said.

"As kids move up from the pre-pubertal age, sedentary pursuits often take over and their willingness to be involved in active pursuits is reduced," she said. That can lead to greater weight gain later on.

Less and less activity in school

It would be reasonable for policymakers to put more emphasis on physical education (PE) classes or for more after-school programmes to make time for physical activity, she said. "The recommendation is that children get at least 60 minutes of activity per day, but those don't have to occur at the same time," Khan said. "It could be incorporated throughout the school day."

The curriculum used to develop the FITKids program was originally designed for use in PE classes, Ward noted. FITKids has been available for kids in Illinois for six years and is still an option for kids in that area.

There are likely similar after-school options in other areas of the country, Khan said. "We know children are getting less and less activity in school," he said. But no matter where it happens, he added, "Providing children with opportunities to be physically active is beneficial to their health."

View the original article here

This post was made using the Auto Blogging Software from <a href='http://www.webmagnates.org' title'make money online'>WebMagnates.org This line will not appear when posts are made after activating the software to full version.

Aspirin may help colon cancer patients live longer

Adding aspirin to the regular treatment of people whose tumour cells give off a specific antigen, or defence mechanism, may help them to live longer.

Recent research has raised the possibility that low-dose aspirin could add extra years to the lives of colon cancer patients. Now, a new study suggests that only certain patients may gain a survival benefit by taking aspirin after diagnosis.

The study of about 1,000 patients found that people whose tumour cells give off a specific antigen, or defence mechanism, gained most from adding aspirin to their regular treatment.

The findings, published online in JAMA Internal Medicine, aren't conclusive, and patients who develop colon cancer while already taking aspirin may not get any benefit. Also, aspirin, while inexpensive, comes with its own risks.

More research required
Experts asked if colon cancer patients should begin taking aspirin as a result of these findings were divided.

"Absolutely not," said study lead author Dr Marlies Reimers, a doctoral student at Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands. She believes more research is necessary.

But the author of a commentary accompanying the study, Dr Alfred Neugut, said he now plans to recommend aspirin therapy for specific patients.

The study adds to growing evidence that aspirin is helpful for certain colon cancer patients, said Neugut, an oncologist and epidemiologist at Columbia University Medical Centre in New York City.

In his commentary, Neugut writes he himself would add aspirin to his chemotherapy treatment regimen if he had a stage III colon cancer tumour, and he's ready to recommend that patients do, too. Stage III means the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, but has not yet spread to other parts of the body.

Bleeding in the digestive system
Together, this research and other recent studies "paint a very sound picture that warrants a change in standard of care – that aspirin can and should be recommended for use for stage III patients," he said in an interview.

But what about aspirin's well-known risks, especially the possibility of bleeding in the digestive system?

"Stage III patients have a 40 percent to 70 percent chance of dying. I don't think the possibility that 1 percent to 2 percent will have some significant bleeding should deter aspirin's use, given a potential 20 percent to 30 percent improvement in survival," Neugut said.

Aspirin is a "much easier and safer drug than chemotherapy, which we use without reservation," he added.

Neugut said, however, that he doesn't recommend aspirin as a way to prevent colon cancer.

Survival rates notably higher
The study examined tissue samples of 999 patients in the Netherlands who had surgery for colon cancer, mostly stage III or lower. Researchers then compared death rates for patients who were prescribed low-dose aspirin after diagnosis to those without the prescription, which is required in the Netherlands.

The death rate was 38 percent among those who took low (80-milligram) doses of aspirin after diagnosis compared to 49 percent among the non-aspirin users, the study found.

Survival rates were notably higher among aspirin-taking patients whose tumour cells gave off what's called HLA class I antigen – a type of substance that alerts the immune system to defend the body. About two-thirds of 963 patients whose tumours were analyzed fell into this category.

Aspirin had no apparent effect on the other patients who took it, the researchers said.

It's unclear why aspirin might help some colon cancer patients but not others. Reimers said researchers believe aspirin may affect a process involving tumour cells and the components of blood known as platelets.

Effective for other cancers
What's next? Neugut said researchers have launched studies to get a better understanding of aspirin's perceived effect on colon cancer. But the results won't be available for at least 10 years, he noted.

"There is a good chance that aspirin may also prove effective for other cancers in the future," Neugut said, "but there is much less data for any cancer other than colon."

Patients are not routinely tested for HLA class I antigens, but Reimers said it wouldn't be expensive to do so.

View the original article here

This post was made using the Auto Blogging Software from <a href='http://www.webmagnates.org' title'make money online'>WebMagnates.org This line will not appear when posts are made after activating the software to full version.

New app alerts doctors when diabetics need help

A French doctor is testing a smartphone app which will alarm doctors if their diabetes 1 patients need them to help them to manage their disease.

Dr Guillaume Charpentier believes a smartphone app he is testing on people with diabetes in France works best when it alerts doctors that frustrated patients need help managing their disease.

The Diabeo mobile phone programme, which recommends insulin dosages, helped people with type 1 diabetes lower their blood-sugar levels in a six-month study. Now a new analysis of the data shows the app markedly improved glucose levels among patients who used it relatively infrequently, raising red flags for their healthcare providers who then intervened.

"What the electronic system is not able to do is the magic of the doctor – to give motivational support to the patient, to encourage the patient to do what the patient does not want to do," Charpentier told Reuters Health. "This system is a very good tool to improve the contact between the patient and the doctor when the patient really needs the doctor. The system can alarm the doctor at the right time," he said.

Poorly controlled type 1 diabetes

Charpentier, from Sud-Francilien Hospital in Corbeil-Essonnes, France, co-authored a recent analysis published in Diabetes & Metabolism reviewing the results of a prior study he led on the Diabeo system, a smartphone coupled to a website.

The first study, completed in 2009, included 180 patients seen at 17 French hospitals with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes. The app, given to two-thirds of the patients, analysed self-monitored blood-glucose levels, carbohydrate counts, planned physical activity and other personal variables to calculate recommended insulin doses. Half of the app users regularly discussed their diabetes management on the phone with their doctors, who tracked information from the app online.

Those who used the app had significantly lower glucose levels than those who recorded their blood-glucose levels and other variables on paper, that study found. But the researchers wondered how much the automated advice on the insulin dose contributed to the improvement and how much the telephone consultations contributed.

To answer that question, Charpentier and his team re-examined the results and divided the patients who were given the app into one group that frequently used it and another that infrequently used it. Frequent users consulted the app for insulin doses at 90 percent of their meals, whereas infrequent users consulted it at less than one third of meals.

The app seemed to be most beneficial for infrequent users who had telephone consultations with their doctors, the study found. Low users reduced their glucose levels by more than 1 percent about 42% of the time, whereas high users lowered their glucose levels by the same amount only 16% of the time. However, the average drop in blood sugar was not significantly different between high and low users.

Patients veering off course

Charpentier believes the results highlight the benefits of doctors monitoring glucose levels in their patients with diabetes, particularly for patients struggling to comply with diet and exercise recommendations. In the current study, doctors reached out to patients in the group with phone consultations whenever the patients seemed to be veering off course, on average every 20 days, he said.

Generally-compliant patients tended to take advantage of the smartphone system to help them monitor their insulin needs, while noncompliant patients often did not. But doctors frequently could talk their patients into compliance when they tracked their progress online, saw they were not using the system and contacted them, Charpentier said.

"It appears that for a number of patients – most likely those who have the greatest difficulty in coping with diabetes and its constraints – the primary benefit of the device was to facilitate interaction with a caregiver. This aspect is essential to ensure that the tool is not viewed by patients as simply a gadget, but as a valid means of providing proper medical support," the authors write.

"What this really speaks to is personalizing medicine," said Dr Latha Palaniappan, from the Stanford University School of Medicine in California. "This could help us figure out who's going to need the telephone consultation. It's just better tailoring of therapy for the right patient population," Palaniappan told Reuters Health. She studies diabetes and cardiovascular disease but was not involved in the current study.

Past research has been mixed on the use of telemedicine, or diagnosing and treating patients using telecommunications technology, for diabetes. A review of 16 studies suggested that computer and mobile phone programmes that tailor advice and support to people with diabetes may do little to improve their health and quality of life.

Depressed and discouraged

But Charpentier said he believes the Diabeo system, currently being tested on 700 patients in France, will prove itself so useful that the French National Health Insurance system will pay to give it to all of the country's 200 000 people with type 1 diabetes. The system is not currently available in the United States, he said.

Palaniappan noted that the Diabeo system cut glucose levels in the current study by more than another common system has done in previous trials. "This is at least as good as continuous glucose monitoring, which is currently reimbursed by insurance," she said. A continuous glucose monitor helps patients detect when their glucose values are approaching dangerous levels.

People with diabetes frequently feel "depressed, discouraged", Charpentier said. With the app, he said, "You can help your patient at the right time. It is the best way to use the time of the doctor when the patient really needs it."

"Telemedicine is improving at a rapid rate," Palaniappan said. "As our technology is getting better, we're seeing better effects on chronic health conditions," she said. "We can't be stuck in the old conclusions. We have to continuously re-evaluate because there's some cool stuff going on with technology now."

Sanofi-Aventis and CERITD, a French nonprofit diabetes research organization, funded the study. Charpentier said neither he nor any of his colleagues on the research team have financial ties to the Diabeo system.

View the original article here

This post was made using the Auto Blogging Software from <a href='http://www.webmagnates.org' title'make money online'>WebMagnates.org This line will not appear when posts are made after activating the software to full version.

Six million South Africans living with HIV/Aids

In South Africa the estimated prevalence of HIV increased by almost 2% from 2008 to 2012, largely because of new infections and a higher survival rate.

An estimated 6.4 million people were living with HIV/Aids in 2012 in South Africa, a study by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) revealed.

The findings of the SA National HIV Prevalence, Incidence and Behaviour Survey 2012, was officially launched in Pretoria. said Dr Nadia Bandstein of the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm.

She helped lead the study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and presented at the cardiology college's annual conference in Washington.

Chest pain sends more than 15 million people to emergency rooms in the United States and Europe each year, and it usually turns out to be due to anxiety, indigestion or other less-serious things than a heart attack. Yet doctors don't want to miss one – about 2% of patients having heart attacks are mistakenly sent home.

People may feel reassured by being admitted to a hospital so doctors can keep an eye on them, but that raises the risk of picking up an infection and having expensive care they'll have to pay a share of, plus unnecessary tests.

The study included nearly 15 000 people who went to the Karolinska University hospital with chest pains over two years. About 8 900 had low scores on a faster, more sensitive blood test for troponin, a substance that's a sign of heart damage. The test has been available in Europe, Asia and Canada for about three years, but it is not yet available in the United States.

A huge waste of resources

The patients were 47 years old on average and 4% had a previous heart attack. About 21% of them wound up being admitted.

Researchers later looked back to see how the blood test and electrocardiogram would have predicted how they fared over the next month.

They figured that in order to find one heart attack in patients like this, 594 would have to be admitted – a huge waste of resources.

A test like this would be "enormously useful", and the study's results are "almost too good to be true", said Dr Judd Hollander, an emergency medicine specialist at the University of Pennsylvania.

He believes the test should be available in the US and that the amount of evidence that regulators are requiring to approve it is too high.

Unnecessary tests

Dr Allan Jaffe, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic, said the problem is not what the test rules out, but what it might falsely rule in. It's so sensitive that it can pick up troponin from heart failure and other problems and cause unnecessary tests for that.

"I think the strategy long-term will be proven," but more studies underway now in the US are needed to show that, he said.

View the original article here

This post was made using the Auto Blogging Software from <a href='http://www.webmagnates.org' title'make money online'>WebMagnates.org This line will not appear when posts are made after activating the software to full version.

A stronger joint isn't necessarily more addictive

A Dutch study found that in marijuana smokers THC dose is not the main determinant of who becomes dependent – their style of pot smoking is a better predictor.

<IMG style="MARGIN: 5px" border=0 alt="A stronger joint isn" align=left src="/9ad627d355b24907bd72e325604ddee4.jpg" width=300 height=300 addictive? more necessarily t>Marijuana smokers' behaviour is more important than the potency of their pot or how much of the psychoactive ingredient THC they take in for predicting who will become dependent, according to a small new study.

Researchers have debated whether smokers of high-potency cannabis varieties are at greater risk of addiction because they get more THC, or if they compensate for the pot's strength by using or inhaling less of it.

That doesn't really matter, say the authors of the new report. Smokers of potent pot do get more THC than smokers of traditional varieties, they found. But it's their style of pot smoking that predicted who was most likely to become dependent.

Determinant of dependence

"No drug use is without risk," said lead author Peggy van der Pol, a doctoral candidate at the Trimbos Institute of the Netherlands Institute of Mental Health and Addiction. "When using stronger cannabis you will likely take in more THC than when using less potent cannabis," she told Reuters Health in an email.

Most previous research into cannabis dependence has looked mainly at how frequently a person uses cannabis, Van der Pol and her team note in the journal Addiction. But the assumption that heavier THC exposure leads to greater addiction risk ignores the possibility that THC dose is not the main determinant of who becomes dependent, they write.

Van der Pol and her team analysed data on 98 young adults taking part in an ongoing long-term study of frequent marijuana users in the Netherlands. The participants were recruited from coffee houses where the sale and use of cannabis is permitted and via referrals. Each person reported smoking marijuana on at least three days a week for more than a year.

At the start of the study, three quarters of the participants were men and 23 years old, on average. One in three met the criteria for marijuana dependence at that point. A year and a half after recruitment, and then a year and a half after that, the participants were interviewed about their cannabis use and asked to smoke a joint in a comfortable setting while researchers documented details of their behaviour.

Exposed to more THC

To simulate real-world conditions, smokers were asked to bring their own cannabis and to roll their own joints. Contrary to the authors' original predictions, the smokers of the more potent pot varieties did not roll weaker joints. They used more cannabis in each joint than their peers who smoked lower-strength cannabis. Smokers of potent varieties did inhale less smoke and they smoked at a slower pace than their peers, the study team found.

"Users seem to partly adjust, or 'titrate' their THC intake, but not sufficiently so to fully compensate for the THC-strength," van der Pol told Reuters Health. "So users of more potent cannabis are generally exposed to more THC." These adjustments in smoking behaviour may not be intentional, she added.

"On average, users seem not to fully compensate for cannabis strength by inhaling less smoke. Yet, as the smoking behaviour may be an unconscious process, users are likely unaware whether or not they (partly) compensate their intake." Taking smaller and less frequent puffs on their marijuana joints did not appear to alter their risk of dependence either, the results indicate.

The decreased volume of marijuana puffs – determined by a device that measured puff volume, duration, and related factors – and the total number of puffs was associated with more severe marijuana dependence, both at the start of the study and at follow up, the researchers note. Total monthly exposure to THC did predict the severity of dependence at the three-year mark, but not independent of a person's dependence status at the beginning of the study.

Increasing blood levels of THC

Only smoking behaviours – like how much of a joint people smoked, or how frequently they puffed – predicted dependence at the three-year mark regardless of THC exposure or dependence status at the start, the researchers report.
Dr Wilson Compton, Deputy Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) told Reuters Health via email, "This is an important study that helps to understand that increasing potency of marijuana may be related to increasing blood levels
of THC, despite some reductions in how much people smoke when the marijuana is stronger."

Compton, who was not involved in the study, added, "This is an important area of research, and we do need a better understanding of it, but we remain concerned particularly for new and young users who may not titrate in the same way as experienced users, and thus may be exposing their brains to higher levels of THC from the outset."

View the original article here

This post was made using the Auto Blogging Software from <a href='http://www.webmagnates.org' title'make money online'>WebMagnates.org This line will not appear when posts are made after activating the software to full version.

Energy drinks increase heart strain

Healthy adults who consumed energy drinks high in caffeine and taurine had significantly increased heart contraction rates one hour later.

Healthy adults who consumed energy drinks high in caffeine and taurine had significantly increased heart contraction rates one hour later, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

"Until now, we haven't known exactly what effect these energy drinks have on the function of the heart," said radiology resident Jonas D?rner, MD, of the cardiovascular imaging section at the University of Bonn, Germany, which is led by the study's principal investigator, Daniel K. Thomas, MD. "There are concerns about the products' potential adverse side effects on heart function, especially in adolescents and young adults, but there is little or no regulation of energy drink sales."

Energy drinks represent a multibillion dollar industry that is growing every day. While teenagers and young adults have traditionally been the largest consumers, in recent years more people of all demographics have begun consuming energy drinks.

More emergency department visits

A 2013 report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration stated that in the US from 2007 to 2011, the number of emergency department visits related to energy drink consumption nearly doubled, increasing from 10 068 to 20 783. Most of the cases were identified among patients aged 18 to 25, followed by those aged 26 to 39.

"Usually energy drinks contain taurine and caffeine as their main pharmacological ingredients," Dr D?rner said. "The amount of caffeine is up to three times higher than in other caffeinated beverages like coffee or cola. There are many side effects known to be associated with a high intake of caffeine, including rapid heart rate, palpitations, rise in blood pressure and, in the most severe cases, seizures or sudden death."

For the study, which is ongoing, Dr D?rner and colleagues used cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure the effect of energy drink consumption on heart function in 18 healthy volunteers, including 15 men and three women with a mean age of 27.5 years. Each of the volunteers underwent cardiac MRI before and one hour after consuming an energy drink containing taurine (400 mg/100 ml) and caffeine (32 mg/100 ml).

Compared to the baseline images, results of cardiac MRI performed one hour after the study participants consumed the energy drink revealed significantly increased peak strain and peak systolic strain rates (measurements for contractility) in the left ventricle of the heart. The heart's left ventricle receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it to the aorta, which distributes it throughout the rest of the body.

Additional studies required

"We don't know exactly how or if this greater contractility of the heart impacts daily activities or athletic performance," Dr D?rner said. "We need additional studies to understand this mechanism and to determine how long the effect of the energy drink lasts."

The researchers found no significant differences in heart rate, blood pressure or the amount of blood ejected from the left ventricle of the heart between the volunteers' baseline and second MRI exams.

"We've shown that energy drink consumption has a short-term impact on cardiac contractility," Dr D?rner said. "Further studies are needed to evaluate the impact of long-term energy drink consumption and the effect of such drinks on individuals with heart disease."

Dr D?rner said that while long-term risks to the heart from drinking energy drinks remain unknown, he advises that children, as well as people with known cardiac arrhythmias, should avoid energy drinks, because changes in contractility could trigger arrhythmias. He also cautions that additional study is needed to address risks posed by the consumption of energy drinks in combination with alcohol.

<A href="http://www.health24.com/Medical/Heart/News/Energy-drinks-increase-heart-strain-20131202" to regular cigarettes - and the fast-growing market is largely unregulated.

The Dutch institute also recommended banning flavour and scent enhancers in e-cigarettes that contain nicotine because of concerns they may attract children to smoking.

Citing the institute's findings, Dutch deputy health minister Martin Van Rijn argued that e-cigarettes are as addictive as tobacco cigarettes because they contain nicotine, and he said there was no proof of claims by manufacturers that they help smokers quit.

"There is insufficient scientific evidence to be able to say whether the quantities of toxins in the exhaled air are dangerous for bystanders," the letter said.

Additional research will be conducted by the institute to learn more about e-cigarettes, the ministry said.

The warning came as Britain signalled it would force tobacco companies to scrap branded cigarette packaging on Thursday in an attempt to reduce the number of children who may be drawn to smoking by striking and brightly coloured packs.

The Dutch institute raised concerns on its website last week that e-cigarettes are attractive to young people because of bright colours, flashing lights and jewellery-like appearance.

Roughly 11 to 18 percent of Dutch smokers have tried the e-cigarette, while about 5 percent said they use it regularly, the ministry said.

More than $2 billion

Market consultant Euromonitor estimates the world market for electronic cigarettes was more than $2 billion last year, with the United States accounting for a quarter of that.

A few countries have banned them outright – such as Brazil, Norway and Singapore – while others are opting for varying degrees of regulation, in some cases including limits on advertising and curbs on their use in public places.

Big tobacco companies are grappling with declining sales of tobacco in a number of markets due to increasing government regulation and more health-aware consumers, as well as smuggling and an economic downturn.

Philip Morris International Inc, the maker of Marlboro cigarettes, said this month it plans to enter the e-cigarette market next year, saying it is the "greatest growth opportunity".

Imperial Tobacco Group plans to launch two electronic cigarettes in its new fiscal year.

<A href="http://www.health24.com/News/Dutch-government-warns-about-e-cigarettes-20131128" People who cannot help their gag reflex may unintentionally deprive themselves of the best dental care, write Giuseppa Bilello and Antonella Fregapane, both from the University of Palermo in Sicily.

Acupuncture may be one strategy to solve that problem, the pair suggests."It is a small study, and that is one weakness," Dr Palle Rosted told Reuters Health.

"But it is a good start."Rosted is a consultant acupuncturist with Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield, England. He was not involved with the current study.

The researchers recruited 20 people with a history of gag reflex in the dental chair to have upper and lower teeth impressions taken under normal circumstances and then immediately after acupuncture. Participants ranged in age from 19 to 80.

No comparison group

For the first round of upper teeth impressions, they reported an average gag reflex score of 7 on a 0-10 scale, with 10 representing the maximum nausea sensation. During the second round, the researchers applied acupuncture needles about 30 seconds before taking impressions and left the needles in until the procedure ended.

On average, gag reflex scores dropped to just 1.The pattern was similar for gag reflex scores during lower teeth impressions done with and without acupuncture, according to findings published in the journal Acupuncture in Medicine. The researchers point out that they can't be sure the improvements were due to the acupuncture needles themselves – in part because there was no comparison group that didn't get acupuncture.

Another possibility is that gag reflex scores improved because participants were more used to the impressions the second time around. Still, "It has certainly given us some more evidence that acupuncture may be effective," Rosted said.

The study's positive result "is something that we doctors definitely need exposure to and to keep in mind as a possible option," Dr. Preeti Nair said.

"We rarely think of acupuncture, and usually use local anaesthetics."Nair was not part of the current research. She has studied gag reflex at the People's College of Dental Sciences & Research Centre in Bhopal, India. One difference between a drug like local anaesthesia and acupuncture could be side effects.

"We haven't gotten all of the details in our hand, but with acupuncture, the side effects could be less," Nair said. Much more research is needed on the subject, she added. In order for a large, randomised controlled trial - the gold standard in medical research – to be done on this subject, dental offices and academic institutions may have to work together, said Chris Dickinson of King's College London Dental Institute at Guy's Hospital in England. In England, the British Dental Acupuncture Society offers training for dentists in certain dental applications of acupuncture, said Dickinson, who was not involved in the new study.

Simple technique

"There are very few contraindications associated with acupuncture and dental operations that we've experienced," Dickinson said. "But we don't use the technique in patients with metal allergies, pregnant women and those with needle phobias."

Dickinson noted that other acupuncture points could have been used for gag control such as ear points and LI4, also known as the Hegu point. Researchers in the current study placed needles in the PC6, EX 1 and CV24 acupuncture points on the face and wrist."The message to dentists is that it's a simple technique and easily learned," Dickinson said.

"It's also cost-effective. Even though it does not work in every case there's very little lost by trying it."In the US, acupuncture typically costs about $100 per session. One of the positive aspects of acupuncture is that after an operation, a patient may choose to drive home, which is not possible with other treatments, such as general anesthesia, Rosted said. "The risk of causing harm with this treatment is nearly non-existent," he said.

View the original article here

Blood vessels reorganise after face transplants

Blood vessels in face transplant recipients re-organise themselves, leading to an understanding of the biologic changes that happen after full face transplantation.

Blood vessels in face transplant recipients re-organise themselves, researchers have found, leading to an understanding of the biologic changes that happen after full face transplantation.

The results of the study have been presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America .

Face transplantation is a recent development in reconstructive surgery for patients who have lost some or all of their face from injury or disease. Sloan, an assistant professor of interdisciplinary social sciences and sociology at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee. "Based on the history of discrimination against African Americans in the workplace, we thought blacks would experience more negative emotions at work than whites. As it turned out, the opposite was true."

Titled, "Counting on Coworkers: Race, Social Support, and Emotional Experiences on the Job," the study considered more than 1 300 state government employees in Tennessee.

Sloan and her co-authors Ranae J. Evenson Newhouse, an assistant professor of sociology at Tennessee State University, and Ashley B. Thompson, an assistant professor of sociology at Lynchburg College, also found that the higher the percentage of minorities in a workplace, the more close friends blacks had and the fewer whites had.

Negative emotions and race

In workplaces with a low percentage of minority employees — 13% or less — black workers said they considered 39% of their co-workers to be close friends versus 61% for white workers. However, in workplaces with a high percentage of minority employees — 35% or more — black workers said they considered about 42% of their co-workers to be close friends versus 46% for white workers.

"What was surprising to us about these findings was that the percentage of minority workers in a workplace more strongly influenced the friendships of whites than blacks," Sloan said.

In addition, the study found that the more minorities in a workplace, the more negative emotions whites experienced at work. "This is a concern because the increased negative emotions of white workers in racially diverse workplaces can negatively impact the workplace atmosphere," Sloan said.

Sloan and her co-authors also discovered that while providing social support to co-workers negatively affected the emotional experiences of white workers, it was associated with increased levels of positive emotion among black workers. "By providing support to colleagues, black workers may feel valued and more integrated into the work environment," Sloan said. "In contrast, white workers who do not experience social isolation in the same way as black workers do, may find providing support to be a burden."

In terms of policy implications, Sloan said the study suggests that more research is needed to determine how to encourage people from different racial and ethnic backgrounds to develop supportive relationships with each other. "Simply increasing racial and ethnic diversity in the workplace might not be enough to foster social connections between workers with different backgrounds and, in fact, may elicit negative emotions among members of the majority group," Sloan said.

View the original article here

600 teens start smoking every day

The number of teenage smokers is increasing, with research showing that in London the daily tally is 67 new smokers a day.

UK national figures on smoking prevalence are available, but the researchers* wanted to estimate smoking uptake among children, to provide some baseline data to inform efforts for preventive measures, and focus attention and resources on what is "essentially a child protection issue."

This is because taking up smoking at a young age is an even greater risk to health than starting later in life, they say. Smoking at a young age affects lung development and boosts the risk of progressive lung disease (COPD).

And people who start smoking before the age of 15 run a higher risk of developing lung cancer than those who take up the habit later on, even if the cumulative number of cigarettes smoked is smaller, they add.

How the study was done

The researchers based their analysis on data taken from the 2011 'Smoking, drinking and drug use among young people in England' survey, which targets schoolchildren in England between the ages of 11 and 15 every year.

Questionnaires were completed by 6519 children in 219 schools. And by comparing the numbers of current smokers - regular and occasional - with smoking rates among the same age band surveyed the previous year, the researchers were able to estimate the numbers of new 11 to 15 year olds starting to smoke in 2010-11 in the UK.

To calculate the number of new child smokers for each locality, this estimate of 207 000 was then split across geographical areas according to population size and smoking prevalence among adults, on the assumption that there would be more child smokers where the proportion of adult smokers was high. Parental smoking is one of the strongest predictors of smoking among children.

The researchers then used population and adult smoking prevalence data for each of the four UK countries to calculate the number of new child smokers for each locality.

The analysis indicated that among the 3.7 million children aged between 11 and 15 in the UK, an estimated 463 start smoking every day in England, with the equivalent figures for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, 55, 30, and 19, respectively.

Of 74 000 children in this age group in Birmingham, nine take up smoking every day, while the daily tally in London is 67 out of 458 000 children in this age group.

The authors acknowledge that as their figures are calculated from survey data, they can only be approximate, but the fact that they are regional might be more helpful to healthcare professionals and regulators, they say.

Smoking rates among both adults and children are falling in the UK, but the figures are still high, so the pressure needs to be kept up to reduce smoking further, say the authors.

This means increasing taxation, curbing smuggling, and running well-funded anti-smoking media campaigns, as a well as banning smoking in cars and introducing plain packaging to reduce children's exposure to branding, they say.

"Smoking is among the largest causes of preventable deaths worldwide," they write. "The present data should help to raise awareness of childhood smoking and to focus attention on the need to address this important child protection issue," they conclude.

View the original article here

Party-season survival plan

If you've been watching your diet over the past months and getting ready to show off your new figure this summer, you may be approaching the party season with some trepidation.

Hooray! The end of the year is in sight and the party season has officially started. Though we're still slaving away at the office to get all the last things done before year-end, we're partying equally hard to reward ourselves for all the hard work.

If you've been watching your diet over the past few months and getting ready to show off your new figure this summer, you may be approaching the party season with some trepidation. Parties = foods and drink galore = kilojoule bombs = bikini crisis.

Before you sink into a deep pit of depression and deprivation, take heart: food fests and trim waistlines do not have to be mutually exclusive.

Follow these tips and you can have the best of both worlds:

Never go to a party hungry. Have a healthy balanced snack beforehand and you'll be far better able to resist temptations.

Once you're at the party, don't torture yourself by lingering near the buffet table. The persistent call of your favourite party snack will become totally irresistible if you hover there long enough.

When you do feel like having a snack, avoid the fried, fatty foods, chips, nuts and cheese platters which are very high in kilojoules.

Rather opt for the vegetable crudités and fresh slices of summer fruit. Watch out for the fatty mayonnaise and creamy dips.

When it comes to drinks, choose carefully. Alcoholic drinks, especially cocktails, can be loaded with kilojoules and they also tend to make you feel like eating unhealthy snacks.

Add soda water or ice to your wine, use sugar-free mixers with spirits and drink lots of water in between.

And finally, shake that booty. If dancing on the tables or jumping into the pool is not part of your party repertoire, make some time for at least 30 minutes of exercise every day - this will act as the perfect antidote to that forbidden snack that somehow snuck past your willpower right into your mouth.

Here's to a healthy, fun-filled summer.

View the original article here

Obese people do have more heart attacks

An analysis supports the idea that obese people who are otherwise healthy are still at risk of heart problems down the road.

A new analysis supports the idea that obese people who are otherwise healthy are still at risk of heart problems down the road.

Contrary to previous results

Researchers who reviewed past studies found that even heavy people who didn't have high blood pressure or diabetes, for instance, had more heart attacks and strokes over time than healthy normal-weight people. It's just that the risk may be lower (than among obese people who also have other problems) and it might take a little longer to see it."

Studies over 10 years or more

Hill, executive director of the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center at the University of Colorado in Aurora, co-wrote a commentary published with the new analysis. Canadian researchers pooled the results of eight studies that followed normal-weight, overweight and obese people over time. Some of those participants were metabolically healthy. Others had a mix of heart-related risk factors like a large waist circumference, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, low "good" cholesterol and diabetes.

The studies included just over 61,000 people. Over a period of three to 30 years, depending on the study, about 4,000 of them died or developed heart problems. At first, obese people without metabolic problems didn't seem to be any more at-risk than slimmer participants who were also metabolically healthy. Then, however, the researchers looked only at studies that followed people for 10 years or more. They found that over time, heavy but healthy people in those studies were 24 percent more likely to die, have a heart attack or stroke or develop heart failure.

View the original article here

Cape Town Marathon winner tests positive for banned steroid

The SA Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) has announced today that the Cape Town Marathon winner Lindhikaya Mthangayi tested positive for a prohibited anabolic steroid.

The SA Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) has announced today that the Cape Town Marathon winner Lindhikaya Mthangayi tested positive for a prohibited anabolic steroid, Methandienone, and will face a doping charge at an independent tribunal.

Lindhikaya Mthangayi tested positive in an in-competition test conducted by the SA Institute for Drug-Free Sport at the Cape Town Marathon on 22 September 2013.

This is Mthangayi’s second offence as the athlete tested positive in 2009 for the stimulant, methylhexaneamine during the Nedbank Marathon series and received a six-month ban.

Mthangayi has the option to request his B-Sample analysed to confirm A-sample result. This study, however, suggests that the rate of heart attacks and death among men and women with heart disease is similar.

Meanwhile, both men and women who don't have build-up of plaque in their coronary arteries have the same good chance of avoiding severe heart-related consequences, said lead researcher Dr Jonathon Leipsic.

Diagnose plaque

"If you have a normal CT scan, you are not likely to have a heart attack or die in the next 2.3 years - whether you're a man or a woman," said Leipsic, director of medical imaging at St Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia.

"That's an important new finding."

Leipsic said the ability to use a CT scan to diagnose plaque in the coronary arteries enabled researchers to determine that the outcomes are the same for men and women, regardless of what other tests show or what other risk factors patients have.

The results of the study were discussed at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago.

More on Coronary artery disease

When the coronary arteries - the blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart - start building fatty deposits called plaque, coronary artery disease occurs. Over time, plaque may damage or narrow the arteries, increasing the chances of a heart attack.

Dr Gregg Fonarow, a spokesperson for the American Heart Association, said coronary artery disease is associated with both fatal and nonfatal heart episodes, even when a person's arteries aren't narrowed. Fonarow was not involved with the new research.

What did the new find?

The new study found similar increased risk for major adverse cardiac events in men and women, even after risk adjustment, said Fonarow, who is also a professor of cardiology at the University of California in Los Angeles.

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in both women and men.

"Irrespective of sex, controlling the seven major heart health risk factors - smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, inactivity and poor diet - can substantially reduce the risk of the development and progression of coronary artery disease," Fonarow said.

What do the findings suggest?

These new study findings also suggest that effective medical therapy, along with lifestyle modification, should be started in both men and women who have mild heart disease, he said.

For the study, Leipsic and his colleagues used data from a large international study registry. That registry included nearly 28 000 people from six countries who had images taken of their hearts.

The researchers identified more than 18 000 people without known heart disease whose scans were normal or showed mild disease, in which arteries were less than 50% blocked.

These patients, including about 8 800 women and 9 300 men, were then matched with more than 11 000 similar patients.

Risk factors

Based on scan findings and standard risk factors for heart attack and death, the researchers calculated that men and women with mild heart disease had the same risk for death or heart attack.

In addition, men and women who didn't have any heart disease had the same odds for good outcomes, Leipsic said.

Over more than two years of follow-up, only about 250 of the 18 000 patients had a heart attack or cardiac-related death, the researchers said.

Because the new study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.

<A href="http://www.health24.com/Medical/Heart/News/Mild-heart-disease-may-pose-equal-risks-for-men-and-women-20131203" That leaves the rest of the time for sitting still or engaging in non-exercise activities, like home repairs, lawn care and gardening, car maintenance, hunting or fishing.

Low intensity activities

For older people, who tend to exercise less vigorously than younger people, spending more time doing low-intensity activities like the above could help cut down on sitting time, Ekblom-Bak and her colleagues write in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Between 1997 and 1999, more than 5 000 60-year-olds were invited to participate in the study, which began with a questionnaire about health history, lifestyle and daily activities, as well as medical tests and measurements.

At the study's outset, people who were more active on a daily basis, regardless of their exercise levels, tended to have smaller waists and healthier cholesterol levels.

The participants were followed for the next 12.5 years. Females, on average, appear to be better able to connect the parts of their brains that handle analysis and intuition.

"It starts when they're young," Verma said. "It manifests itself when they are adolescents."

To put the results another way, "men's brains are biased toward rapid understanding of a situation and how to respond to it, especially in how to act and move in response to information," Claremont's Zak said. "Women's brains are biased toward integrating information with feelings."

The findings suggest the hormones that begin to kick in during adolescence push the male and female brains in different directions, he said.

Why the man drives

Why the "It tells us why, almost always, when men and women are in a car together, the man drives," Zak contended. "His brain is biased toward being better at moving a vehicle along a road and going to the right place, the stereotype of the lost man notwithstanding."

Also, "women maintain and value friendships and other relationships better than men do. Men can have many friends, but on average we are less good at this," Zak said.

Verma, the study co-author, said the next step in the research is to figure out if people behave differently depending on how their brains are wired.

The study appears online in the journal Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences.

View the original article here

Childhood stress linked to higher blood pressure

A new US study offers more evidence that childhood experience may have health effects that echo into adulthood.

A new US study offers more evidence that childhood experience may have health effects that echo into adulthood.

Based on health data for 500 unrelated black men over age 20 enrolled in the Howard University Family Study, researchers found those who had lived with one parent rather than two as children had higher average blood pressure readings.

The men who had grown up in single-parent households also had a 46% greater risk of developing high blood pressure, also known as hypertension."These differences in mean blood pressure and the prevalence of hypertension among men raised in two-parent households vs. single-parent households during childhood are quite significant," Debbie Barrington said.

Barrington led the study at the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities with colleagues at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

Childhood living arrangements

About 1 in 3 US adults has high blood pressure, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. High blood pressure increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, which are leading causes of death.

Generally, the lower the maximum blood pressure (the top number), the better, with a reading under 120 millimetres of mercury (mmHg) considered best.

Previous studies have linked childhood living arrangements to aspects of high blood pressure, but this one is the first to examine black men a population at particular risk for hypertension.

Men who had lived with both parents as children tended to have a maximum blood pressure 4.4 mmHg lower than those who had never lived with both parents. The differences in maximum blood pressure between men raised by two parents versus one were greater than the changes produced by some common prescription blood pressure medications, Barrington said.

The men from two-parent households also tended to have a smaller difference between maximum and minimum blood pressure as the heart pumps, and a lower average pressure, all of which are usually for the better.

Single-parent households

The gaps widened further for men who had lived with both parents between ages 1 and 12, averaging 6.5 mmHg lower maximum blood pressure readings than men from single-parent households, according to the results published in the journal Hypertension.

It might not actually be the presence or absence of parents that directly affects blood pressure, but the number of parents in the home could indicate other important childhood risk factors, Barrington said.

Children who grow up in single-parent households are more likely to experience poverty, and early childhood poverty has been linked to later health problems like hypertension, she said.

Among the study participants, "Those men who grew up in two parent households during childhood were also more likely to experience less economic hardship and subsequently less stress in early life," she said.

"Less childhood stress potentially delays the rise of blood pressure that increases with age, lowering one's risk of hypertension in adulthood. "Childhood family living arrangements might, for research purposes, be equivalent to social and economic status, Barrington said, though she did not collect economic data on the men's childhood households.

If that kind of economic background information had been taken into account, she said, the protective effect of having two parents in the home might have been smaller or might have disappeared.

'Hard-wiring' for hypertension

Research has shown that living with two parents improves the social circumstances of black American boys, increasing their academic success and employment prospects and decreasing the likelihood of drug and alcohol abuse, Barrington pointed out.

"There is substantial evidence that changes in family structures can augment environmental stressors and unmask genetic, ethnic and cultural factors in the African-American predilection for hypertension," said Richard Millis, who was not involved in the study.

To begin to translate these results to useful principles in daily life, the medical community should begin by "educating the educators", namely nurses, doctors and health professionals, said Millis, an associate professor of physiology and biophysics at Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC. Doctors can then help patients understand how lifestyle choices might reverse "hard-wiring" for hypertension, he said.

One interesting place to start would be to research the "critical period" of childhood between ages 1 and 12, the study authors write. Until the new results are replicated, black Americans should continue to follow Institute of Medicine recommendations for blood pressure screening and decreasing salt, fat and sugar in their diets, Barrington said.

"Our study suggests that there may be a link between childhood family living arrangements and blood pressure in black men," she said. "It does not suggest that those men who did not live with both parents during childhood are destined to have high blood pressure in adulthood."

View the original article here

Charity sporting events a way to get fit

Fitness experts say raising money for a good cause is another incentive for people to get in shape.

Along with the usual reasons for losing weight, like fitting into a bikini and improving health, fitness experts say raising money for a good cause is another incentive for people to get in shape.

Entering a charity run in memory of a loved one or a bicycle ride for a worthy cause has pushed many couch potatoes from their sedentary lifestyle on to the path of fitness.

Kelly Flynn, running coach for Team In Training, a charity sports endurance program from the Leukaemia & Lymphoma Society, has been teaching novice runners to tackle the Boson Marathon since 2005.

"The people who've never run before and have a motivation, like a loved one, are the easiest people to coach," said Flynn, a 40-year-old Boston-based attorney. "They stick it out. In December, Sedgwick will host a ride for the Food Bank for New York City.

Zukerman believes charity fitness is here to stay.

"So many typical charity events involve going to speeches with a tedious sit-down dinner," she said. "People see this as an opportunity to contribute in a newer, fresher, more fun way."

View the original article here

Fertility doctors aim to lower rate of twin births

Fertility clinic doctors are reporting an epidemic of twins in the US and are now urging couples to try one embryo at a time.

Boston - US doctors are reporting an epidemic - of twins.

New federal numbers show nearly half of all babies born with advanced fertility help are multiple births.

In the five years since the "Octomom" case — when a California woman gave birth to octuplets — big multiple births have decreased substantially, but the twin rate has barely budged.

Twins aren't always twice as nice; they have much higher risks of prematurity and serious health problems.

Fertility help

Now fertility experts are pushing a new goal and that is a growing number of couples attempting pregnancy with just a single embryo, helped by new ways to pick the ones most likely to succeed.

New guidelines are also urging doctors to stress this approach.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention's most recent numbers show that 46% of IVF babies are multiples — mostly twins — and 37% are born premature. By comparison, only 3% of babies born without fertility help are twins and about 12% are preterm.

It's mostly an American problem and some European countries that pay for fertility treatments require using one embryo at a time.

Embryo transfer

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine is trying to make it the norm in the US, too. Its guidelines, updated earlier this year, say that for women with reasonable medical odds of success, those under 35 should be offered a single embryo transfer and no more than two at a time. The number rises with age to two or three embryos for women up to 40, since older women have more trouble conceiving.

The medical director of Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York, a Manhattan fertility clinic, Dr Alan Copperman, said: “Our goal in 2014 is to minimize the birth of twins.

"This year I'm talking about two versus one. Several years ago I was talking about three versus two" embryos.”

The one-at-a-time idea is catching on. Only 4% of women under 35 used single embryos in 2007 but nearly 12% did in 2011.

It's less common among older women, who account for fewer IVF pregnancies, but it is gaining among them, too.

<A href="http://www.health24.com/News/Fertility-doctors-aim-to-lower-rate-of-twin-births-20131202"
