Number of Kids Swallowing Button Batteries on the Rise

A new study in the journal Pediatrics has found that the number of battery-related emergency department visits by children are on the rise. The smaller-sized button batteries are increasingly used in devices. Button batteries can be dangerous if swallowed by children. A new study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital found that the annual number of battery-related emergency department visits among children younger than 18 years of age more than doubled over the 20-year study period, jumping from 2,591 emergency department visits in 1990 to 5,525 emergency department visits in 2009. The number of button batteries swallowed by children also doubled during this period.

Gary Smith, MD, DrPH, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital, says, "We live in a world designed by adults for the convenience of adults, and the safety of children is often not considered. Products with easily-accessible battery compartments are everywhere in our homes today. By making a few simple design changes and strengthening product manufacturing standards, including products not intended for use by young children, we could prevent many of the serious and sometimes fatal injuries that occur when children are able to easily access button batteries in common household products."

The problem is not just the increased use of the smaller batteries, but the increase in power. Recent reports suggest that the number of fatal and severe button battery ingestions is on the rise. This trend is associated with the increasing use of the three volt, 20 millimeter, lithium button batteries.

Dr. Smith says, "The increased prevalence of the higher voltage 20mm lithium batteries is concerning because it coincides with an alarming 113 percent increase in battery ingestions and insertions by young children. When a button battery is swallowed and gets caught in a child's esophagus, serious, even fatal injuries can occur in less than two hours."

Chinese Police Cracking Down on Horrible Gutter Oil

China Daily reports Chinese police are tring to crack down on the use of a horrible product called gutter oil. Some underground workshops create the illegal and potentially toxic oil using decomposing animal fat, rotting meat, sewer waste and animal organs. This illegal oil, dubbed "gutter oil," is then sold to refiners and winds up being used unwittingly by restaurants.

NMA News, which animated the gutter oil story, says 3,200 tons of gutter oil was recovered from six illegal oil recyclers by Chinese police. Take a look:

Researcher Killed by Deadly Lab Bacteria

Reuters reports that experts from the CDC are seeking to confirm that a young research associated was killed by a bacteria from the lab. The bacteria was Neisseria meningitidis, a highly virulent strain of meningococcal disease. Richard Din, 25, died from multiple organ failure and septic shock. CBS News reports that there is concern Din's colleagues and families could become ill. They have all been given antibiotics, so hopefully there will no additional infections. Take a look:

HeartWare Announces New 450 Person Trial for its Ventricular Assist System

The Wall Street Journal reports that a federal advisory panel recently recommended the approval of HeartWare's ventricular assist system. The advisory committee voted 9 to 2 that the benefits outweigh the risks for the use of the HeartWare Ventricular Assist System as a bridge to heart transplantation in patients with end-stage heart failure. HeartWare recently announced a new 450-patient clinical trial for the device. The system, which is implanted inside a patient, keeps a failing heart pumping while a patient is waiting for a heart transplant to become available.

NMA News created an animation showing how the VAD works. Take a look:

London Ambulances to Trial Rhinochill Machine

London ambulances are running a trial of the Rhinochill machine, a portable brain cooling device. Cooling a patient's brain after a heart attack or stroke can reduce the amount of brain damage.

BeneChill says its RhinoChill intranasal cooling system can be can be initiated by non-specialized medical personnel in field, ambulance, ER and general hospital environments. RhinoChill uses a non-invasive nasal catheter that sprays a rapidly evaporating coolant liquid into the nasal cavity. Nasal prongs are inserted into the patient for directed and controlled delivery of the coolant and gas.

Study Links Infection to Dangerous Blood Clots in Veins and Lungs

A University of Michigan study has found that adults who get infections of any kind - such as urinary, skin, or respiratory tract infections - are nearly three times more likely to be hospitalized for a dangerous blood clot in their deep veins or lungs. The research, published in Circulation, found that infection is the most common predictor of hospitalization for venous thromboembolism.

Lead author Mary Rogers, Ph.D., M.S., research assistant professor in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School, says, "Over half of older Americans who were hospitalized for such blood clots had an infection in the 90 days prior to the hospitalization. This is important because infections are common and many people do not link infections with developing blood clots. In fact, many educational websites do not list infections as a risk factor for blood clots - but they are."

The study also found that other strong predictors of hospitalization for blood clots included blood transfusions and drugs prescribed to stimulate red blood cell production (known as erythropoiesis-stimulating agents), which are sometimes given to treat anemia. The risk of hospitalization for blood clots was nine times greater after the use of these drugs.

The researchers say that venous thromboembolism has been steadily increasing in the United States, with more than 330,000 hospital admissions for this condition a year.

Mayo Clinic Finds Dramatic Rise in Skin Cancer in Young Adults

The Mayo Clinic is seeing an alarming rise of skin cancer, especially among people under 40. According to a study by Mayo Clinic researchers published in the April issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, the incidence of melanoma has escalated, and young women are the hardest hit. The researcher looked for first-time diagnoses of melanoma in patients 18 to 39 from 1970 to 2009. The study found the incidence of melanoma increased eightfold among young women and fourfold among young men. The researchers speculate that indoor tanning bed use and childhood sunburns are key culprits.

Lead investigator Jerry Brewer, M.D., a Mayo Clinic dermatologist, says, "We anticipated we'd find rising rates, as other studies are suggesting, but we found an even higher incidence than the National Cancer Institute had reported using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Result database, and in particular, a dramatic rise in women in their 20s and 30s."

On the plus side, researchers also found mortality rates from the disease have improved over the years, likely due to early detection of skin cancer and prompt medical care.

Dr. Brewer says, "People are now more aware of their skin and of the need to see a doctor when they see changes. As a result, many cases may be caught before the cancer advances to a deep melanoma, which is harder to treat."

The researchers speculate that the use of indoor tanning beds is a key culprit in the rising cancer rate in young women. Dr. Brewer says people continue to use tanning beds despite abundant information about the dangers of using them.

Dr. Brewer says, "A recent study reported that people who use indoor tanning beds frequently are 74 percent more likely to develop melanoma, and we know young women are more likely to use them than young men. The results of this study emphasize the importance of active interventions to decrease risk factors for skin cancer and, in particular, to continue to alert young women that indoor tanning has carcinogenic effects that increase the risk of melanoma."

Study Finds Eating Raisins Regularly Helps Lower Blood Pressure

A study has found that eating raisins may help lower blood pressure. Research presented today at the American College of Cardiology's 61st Annual Scientific Session suggests that, among individuals with mild increases in blood pressure, the consumption of raisins 3 times a day may significantly lower blood pressure, especially when compared to eating other common snacks. Raisins are often cited as a food that can lower blood pressure and benefit heart health, but the researchers believe this is the first controlled study to scientifically support raisins' blood pressure-lowering effects, especially when compared to alternative snacks.

Harold Bays, MD, medical director and president of Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Research Center (L-MARC) and the study's lead investigator, says, "It is often stated as a known fact that raisins lower blood pressure. But we could not find much objective evidence in the medical literature to support such a claim. However, our study suggests if you have a choice between eating raisins or other snacks like crackers and chocolate chip cookies, you may be better off snacking on raisins at least with respect to blood pressure."

Dr. Bays and his team conducted a randomized controlled clinical trial to compare the blood pressure effect of eating raisins versus other snacks in 46 men and women with prehypertension. Participants were randomly assigned to snack on raisins or prepackaged commercial snacks that did not contain raisins, other fruits or vegetables but had the same number of calories per serving three times a day for 12 weeks. The study controlled for individual differences in nutrition and physical activity.

Data analyses found that compared to other snacks, raisins significantly reduced systolic blood pressure at weeks 4, 8, and 12, ranging from -4.8 to -7.2% or -6.0 to -10.2 mmHg (p values <0.05). Within group analysis demonstrated that raisins significantly reduced mean diastolic blood pressure at all study visits, with changes ranging from -2.4 to - 5.2 mmHg (p values < 0.05). Pre-packaged snacks (including crackers and cookies) did not significantly reduce systolic or diastolic blood pressure at any study visit.

The study did not identify how raisins can lower blood pressure, but they are high in potassium, and have fiber, polyphenols, phenolic acid, tannins and antioxidants.

Dr. Bays says, "Raisins are packed with potassium, which is known to lower blood pressure. They are also a good source of antioxidant dietary fiber that may favorably alter the biochemistry of blood vessels, causing them to be less stiff, which in turn, may reduce blood pressure."

Dr. Bays cautions that this was a single site study and larger trials are needed to confirm the blood pressure-regulating effect of raisins.

Study Finds Losing Belly Fat Helps Improve Blood Vessel Function

A new study from Johns Hopkins researchers has found that losing belly fat, whether from a low-carb or a low-fat diet, helps improve blood vessel function.
The results of the study were presented at an American Heart Association scientific meeting in San Diego on March 13.

In the six-month weight-loss study, Hopkins researchers found that the more belly fat the participants lost, the better their arteries were able to expand when needed, allowing more blood to flow more freely. The researchers also found that participants in the study who were on a low-carb diet lost about ten pounds more, on average, than those who were on a low-fat diet.

Kerry J. Stewart, Ed.D., a professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and lead author of the study, says, "After six months, those who were on the low-carb diet lost an average of 28.9 pounds versus 18.7 pounds among those on the low-fat diet."

Stewart and his colleagues studied 60 men and women who weighed an average of 215 pounds at the start of the program. Half of the participants went on a low-carb diet while the others followed a low-fat diet. All took part in moderate exercise and their diets provided a similar amount of calories each day.

The researchers used a blood flow test by constricting circulation in the upper arm for five minutes with a blood pressure cuff to evaluate the health of the participants' blood vessels before and after the weight loss program. With this type of test, when the cuff is released, a healthier artery will expand more, allowing more blood to flow through the artery. The researchers measured how much blood reached the fingertips before, during, and after the constriction of the artery. Stewart says this test can give an indication of the overall health of the vascular system throughout the body. The researchers found that the more belly fat a person had lost, the greater the blood flow to the finger.

Stewart says, "Our study demonstrated that the amount of improvement in the vessels was directly linked to how much central, or belly fat, the individuals lost, regardless of which diet they were on. This is important since there have been concerns that a low-carb diet, which means eating more fat, may have a harmful effect on cardiovascular health. These results showed no harmful effects from the low-carb diet."

FDA Approves First Generic Version of Boniva to Treat Osteoporosis

The FDA has announced approval of the first generic version of Boniva (ibandronate) tablets. Apotex Inc., Orchid Healthcare, and Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. have gained FDA approval to make generic 150 milligram ibandronate tablets.

The once a month pill is used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in women after menopause. Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue. It leads to bone fragility and an increased risk of fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist. The National Institutes of Health estimates that 40 million people have osteoporosis or are at high risk for it.

Keith Webber, Ph.D., deputy director of the Office of Pharmaceutical Science in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, says, "Men as well as women are affected by osteoporosis, a disease that can be prevented and treated. For people who must manage their health conditions over time, it is important to have affordable treatment options."

Surge in Liver Disease Deaths Reported in England

BBC News is reporting a surger in deaths from liver disease. A report from the National End of Life Care Intelligence Network says 11,575 people died from liver disease in England in 2009. This is a big 25% jump from the 9,231 people who died of liver disease in 2001.

Alcoholism, obesity and hepatitis are blamed for the rise in deaths. 70% of those who die of liver disease end up dying tin the hospital.

Mysterious Nodding Disease Outbreak Devastating Families in Northern Uganda

CNN reports that a mysterious disease, named nodding disease, is afflicting children in Ugana. The Wikipedia entry says the disease was first identified in Sudan in the 1960s. The disease appears to only affect children. More than 3,000 children have come down with the disease during the Uganda outbreak since 2009. Over 150 of them have died.

The disease is known for its nodding seizure, which often begins when the affected children see food or when the weather changes. Children will start nodding rapidly and then go into a severe seizure or freeze up. It is a progressive, debilitating and fatal syndrome. Another trait of the illness is that children with the disease tend to wander off.

The cause of the disease is unknown, but CNN reports that WHO officials say 93% of cases are found in areas known to be inhabited by the parasitic worm Onchocerca Volvulus.

The mother in this video from CNN has two children suffering from nodding disease. She has to tie them up when she leaves or they will wander off. Take a look:

Study Finds White Rice Consumption Increases Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

A new study claims that the risk of type 2 diabetes is significantly increased if white rice is eaten regularly. The authors from the Harvard School of Public Health looked at previous studies and evidence of the association between eating white rice and the risk of type 2 diabetes. The authors analyzed the results of four studies: two in Asian countries (China and Japan) and two in Western countries (USA and Australia). All participants were diabetes free at study baseline.

The researchers say a significant trend was found in both Asian and Western countries with a stronger association found amongst women than men. The researchers say their results also show that the more white rice eaten, the higher the risk of type 2 diabetes.

White rice has a lower content of nutrients than brown rice including fiber, magnesium and vitamins, some of which are associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. The researchers say that a high consumption of white rice may lead to increased risk because of the low intake of these nutrients.

Study Finds High Fiber Diets Don't Protect Against Diverticulosis

University of North Carolina researchers are challenging commonly-held beliefs about the causes of diverticulosis, a disease of the large intestine in which pouches develop in the colon wall. A new study of more than 2,000 people found that consuming a diet high in fiber raised, rather than lowered, the risk of developing diverticulosis. The study appears in the February 2012 issue of the journal Gastroenterology. Previously, scientists and physicians have thought that eating a high-fiber diet lowers a person's risk of diverticulosis.

Anne Peery, MD, a fellow in the gastroenterology and hepatology division at UNC and the study's lead researcher, says, "Despite the significant morbidity and mortality of symptomatic diverticulosis, it looks like we may have been wrong, for decades, about why diverticula actually form. While it is too early to tell patients what to do differently, these results are exciting for researchers. Figuring out that we don't know something gives us the opportunity to look at disease processes in new ways."

Diverticulosis affects about one-third of adults over age 60 in the United States. Most cases are asymptomatic, but complications from diverticulosis can be severe, including infections, bleeding, intestinal perforations and even death. An endoscopic picture of a clean colon (large intestine) with diverticula is pictured above.

The UNC study is based on data from 2,104 patients aged 30-80 years who underwent outpatient colonoscopy at UNC Hospitals from 1998-2010. Participants were interviewed about their diet, bowel movements and level of physical activity. The study found those with the lowest fiber intake were 30% less likely to develop diverticula than those with the highest fiber intake. The study also found constipation was not a risk factor and that having more frequent bowel movements actually increased a person's risk. Compared to those with fewer than seven bowel movements per week, individuals with more than 15 bowel movements per week were 70% more likely to develop diverticulosis. The study also found no association between diverticulosis and physical inactivity, intake of fat, or intake of red meat.

Researchers Say Fecal Transplantation is Effective New Treatment Option for Clostridium Difficile

A new study, published here in Gastroenterology, the official journal of the American Gastroenterological Association, says fecal transplantation through colonoscopy is an effective treatment for recurrent Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). CDI is a common cause of both community- and hospital-acquired diarrhea. CDI has become more frequent, more severe, more resistent to standard treatment, and more likely to relapse over the past few years.

Eero Mattila, MD, of Helsinki University Central Hospital, Finland, and lead author of this study, says, "Our results suggest that fecal transplantation is clearly better than any other treatment for recurrent Clostridium difficile infection. Although fecal transplantation is not simple to perform and it has potential risks, it is an effective option."

In the study, researchers reviewed records from 70 patients - across five hospitals - with recurrent CDI who had undergone fecal transplantation through colonoscopy. Donor stool was manually homogenized before transplantation, and fecal transplantation was performed during a colonoscopy by infusing fresh donor feces into the cecum. During the first 12 weeks after fecal transplantation, symptoms were alleviated in all patients who did not have the dangerous Clostridium difficile 027 strain. Of the 36 patients with the 027 strain, 89% had a favorable response. The study also found that after the initial 12 weeks of follow-up, no serious adverse events related to fecal transplantation could be observed during a one-year period.

Diet Low in Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Cause Brain to Age Faster

Researchers have found that a diet lacking in omega-3 fatty acids, nutrients commonly found in fish, may cause the brain to age faster and lose some of its memory and thinking abilities. They study was published in the print issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

For the study, 1,575 people with an average age of 67 and free of dementia underwent MRI brain scans. They were also given tests that measured mental function, body mass and the omega-3 fatty acid levels in their red blood cells.

The researchers found that people whose DHA levels were among the bottom 25% of the participants had lower brain volume compared to people who had higher DHA levels. Participants with levels of all omega-3 fatty acids in the bottom 25% also scored lower on tests of visual memory and executive function, such as problem solving and multi-tasking and abstract thinking.

Study author Zaldy S. Tan, MD, MPH, of the Easton Center for Alzheimer's Disease Research and the Division of Geriatrics, University of California at Los Angeles, said in a statement, "People with lower blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids had lower brain volumes that were equivalent to about two years of structural brain aging."

CDC Reports New Bat Flu Virus, Compatible With Human Flu Viruses

The CDC reports that a new bat flu virus has been discovered. The new influenza A virus was discovered in fruit bats in Guatemala. The CDC says the bat flu does not appear to present a current threat to humans, but should be studied as a potential source for human influenza in the future. Preliminary CDC research on the new virus suggests that its genes are compatible with human influenza viruses. The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Suxiang Tong, team lead of the Pathogen Discovery Program in CDC's Division of Viral Diseases and lead author of the study, says, "This is the first time an influenza virus has been identified in bats, but in its current form the virus is not a human health issue. he study is important because the research has identified a new animal species that may act as a source of flu viruses."

Dr. Ruben Donis, chief of the Molecular Virology and Vaccines Branch in CDC's Influenza Division and a study co-author, says, "Fortunately, initial laboratory testing suggests the new virus would need to undergo significant changes to become capable of infecting and spreading easily among humans. A different animal - such as a pig, horse or dog - would need to be capable of being infected with both this new bat influenza virus and human influenza viruses for reassortment to occur."

MicroChips Unveils Successful Drug Delivery Test With Implantable Device

MicroChips, a developer of implantable drug delivery devices and biosensors, have announced the results of the first successful human clinical trial with an implantable, wirelessly controlled and programmable microchip-based drug delivery device. The implantable device is about the size of a flash drive. The study was published in today's online edition of the journal Science Translational Medicine. The devices could be used to distribute a wide variety of drugs in the future.

Robert Farra, MicroChips President and Chief Operating Officer, says, "These data validate the microchip approach to multi-year drug delivery without the need for frequent injections, which can improve the management of many chronic diseases like osteoporosis where adherence to therapy is a significant problem. We look forward to making further progress to advance our first device toward regulatory approvals, as well as developing a range of products for use in important disease areas such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and chronic pain."

In the trial, seven osteoporotic postmenopausal women diagnosed with osteoporosis received daily doses of the marketed osteoporosis drug teriparatide through microchip delivery rather than daily injection. MicroChips says the resulting PK profiles from the implant were comparable to and had less variation than the PK profiles of multiple, recommended subcutaneous injections of teriparatide. The study also demonstrated that the programmable implant was able to deliver the drug at scheduled intervals.

The implantable device works as an alternative to shots. The drug is in a powder form inside the device. It could also be very useful for Alzheimer's and dementia patients who suffer memory problems. A downside with a device is that if there is a failure with the device a large amount of drug could be unleashed into a person's body all at one time. The Wall Street Journal says the device is still five years out for public use. Take a look:

Woman Claims She Has Sleep Texting Disorder

A paramedic named Kandi Gay claims she suffers from a sleeping disorder that causes her to text while she sleeps. Dr. Akshay Mahadevia says his sleep disorder patients share common traits. In addition to sleep texting, people with the disorder also eat, sleep walk and talk in their sleep. He says his patients are not totally in a deep sleep, but kind of in a limbo state. Dr. Mahadevia says a quick solution would be to take her phone away when she goes to bed. Unfortunately, she needs it for work. Take a look:

Video Shows Why Texting While Walking is Dangerous

This video - created by Casey Neistat for a New York Times story - explains why texting while walking is dangerous. Numerous people have sustained injuries from walking and texting simultaneously. A walking teen once fell down a manhole while texting. Doctors have been warning of the dangers since 2008.

The video shows how narrow your field of vision is when you are texting and walking at the same time. It also shows how walking while texting can be dangerous for other people as well. Neistat says the proper technique is to stop and put your back against a wall while you text. Take a look:

CNN and Today Report on Mystery of Twelve Girls in One School Suffering Tourette-like Symptoms

CNN has a report on the twelve girls at Le Roy JR/SR High School in Leroy, New York suffering from a mysterious Tourette-like illness. Health officials have found no evidence of infection, diseases or environmental factors at the high school. Dr. Laszlo Mechtler, a neurologist at the DENT Neurologic Institute in Amherst, N.Y. believes the girls are suffering from conversion disorder or mass hysteria. However, it is not clear what would have triggered the disorder. The girls don't feel like their lives are particular stressful. Take a look:
