Despite mounting scientific evidence of serious health risks, a state panel in California decided not to declare exposure to the plastics chemical bisphenol A (BPA) toxic to the developing fetus and child. Not a surprising decision given this panel's rather undistinguished record protecting public health. What are they thinking? Why is it so difficult to err on the side of caution and make the chemical companies prove to us that their products are safe before they are accepted into the public marketplace? Now that the public is becoming aware of BPA health risks, BPA-FREE products are showing up all over the place. Now that they are money-makers, that is. I even bought a BPA-FREE water bottle at Wal-mart the other day. So, we must educate ourselves as much as possible and take our health into our own hands. We must protect ourselves and our families from the health risks of chemical exposures and not expect our government agencies to do it for us.

The Beijing Olympics of 2008 were the most polluted games ever with athletes and spectators exposed to dangerous level of smog, researchers have concluded. Do you find this ironic? "China's Olympics had double the level of soot as Athens, triple the levels as Atlanta and 3.5 times higher than as Sydney." The level of toxic smog of soot particles in the air was so high that at times the sun was blotted out. Despite the last minute efforts of Chinese officials, dangerous pollution persisted though factories were shut down, travel was restricted and construction was limited. "Researchers found for four fifths of the time athletes were exposed to levels of coarse particular matter higher than considered safe by the international health watchdog, the World Health Organization."
