By following the above tips, you should start to gain body fat gradually and easily. However, once again I must repeat that to gain weight this way is not very healthy.&lt;br /&gt;

If you are exercising, plan to drink 8 ounces of fluids every 15 minutes to stay hydrated.&lt;br /&gt;

If you wait until you are thirsty to hydrate yourself, you might be reacting too late. By the time you feel the sensation of thirst, significant fluid depletion may have already started. You should maintain fluid replacement on a regular basis before thirst occurs.&lt;br /&gt;

Summer is a good time to begin a program of regular hydration to maintain health. It should also become a habit throughout the seasons. Chronic mild dehydration may be the cause of dry skin, constipation, muscle cramps and generalized fatigue. If you take diuretics or antihistamines, take heed, and more importantly take water -- you may be at extra risk of dehydration. Consuming alcohol on hot summer days may also put you at increased risk of dehydration.&lt;br /&gt;

64 ounces of water is recommended daily, and increase that with exercise. It is easier to drink 8 cold glasses of water throughout the day than to drink all 64 ounces at once, such as just before you go to sleep; or you may need to read an article about sleepless nights.&lt;br /&gt;

Over the years half of my mom&#39;s family died of lung cancer.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
My dad&#39;s only sibling died of lung cancer.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
My mom died of a brain tumor-she used to be a heavy smoker.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
My dad got lung cancer.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
After he got lung cancer he visited me; he was a pathetic skin over bones man now, wearing a corduroy suit, BUT STILL SMOKING IN MY GARAGE.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
My brother&#39;s wife has breast cancer; my brother still smokes cigars.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I started having coughing spells at night and the vision in my left eye was deteriorating.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Me quitting smoking? Impossible- I have no willpower.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Because I knew I could not quit I never even bothered to buy Nicorette or any other stuff.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
So after a whole lifetime of smoking I was going to die of lung cancer too.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
BUT WAIT: the story is not finished yet.&lt;br /&gt;

On September 4, 2002 I was in Calgary browsing in a bookstore called Brown and Noble and a book jumped out at me.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The book was called &quot;How to stop smoking&quot; and had 385 pages in it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I glanced at the first couple of pages where the author boasted that this book was the only way to quit smoking without any withdrawal symptoms or without the Patch.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I bought the book because I was curious as to what you could write 385 pages about how to quit smoking.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It took me 9 days to read the book.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
On September 13, 2002 at 3 PM I took my last drag and exhaled it through a Kleenex.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
That was my last cigarette. I have never even thought about smoking. People can smoke around me and I don&#39;t give it a thought.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The book changes your Mindset.&lt;br /&gt;

If all these people can do it (60 MILLION OF THEM!) - and they include EVERY TYPE of person imaginable - surely that is PROOF that IT IS POSSIBLE to successfully quit smoking.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Here&#39;s another Fact.&lt;br /&gt;
We now know from the latest scientific research, that although nicotine is one of the world&#39;s fastest acting drugs --- the actual PHYSICAL withdrawal pangs when you give up ARE SO MILD, YOU WILL HARDLY BE AWARE of THEM WHEN YOU STOP.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
YES, you have read that sentence right!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I know you will want to argue with me on this point, but, first, let me first make the following points.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Desire to Smoke&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Yes, when you stop smoking you will feel the desire AGAIN and AGAIN to smoke.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We all know that feeling -- &#39;I must have a cigarette&#39;. But that desire in itself is not bad or painful.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It is just a feeling, a sensation we feel in our body.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
However........this is where, for most of us our problems start.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If we start to fear that &#39;craving&#39; or try to use &#39;Willpower&#39; to REPRESS it or FORCE it go away, -- &quot;I wish this feeling would go away&quot; we WILL create pain and tension.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This is what as smokers we have all done in the past.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
That &#39;feeling&#39; of wanting to smoke then becomes painful, annoying and terribly irritating.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Now this is the hard part to realize.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The pain, the horror does not come from the desire to smoke, but from HOW we deal with this desire, moment-by-moment WHEN we stop.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Can I emphasize this.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You do not have to experience ANY pain or agony when you stop. Yes, when you stop you WILL experience a.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Temporary feeling of loss&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A feeling that you are being deprived of something&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A feeling of emptiness&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A feeling that you will never be able to enjoy yourself again.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A feeling that you must have a cigarette&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
These feelings, although very real in themselves are not inherently bad or painful. What is important is how you deal with these feelings when you QUIT SMOKING.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The key part of quitting smoking naturally is learning how to deal with these cravings when you stop.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Conflict&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Right now, you don&#39;t want to give up smoking because you are TERRIFIED of how you will FEEL when you can&#39;t smoke.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Let&#39;s be honest.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You smoke now because you enjoy it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Or -- to be more accurate: You smoke now because you have conditioned yourself to enjoy it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It is important that we are honest with ourselves here.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In fact, even the &#39;THOUGHT&#39;, the mere &#39;thought&#39; of not been able to smoke probably fills you with complete dread now.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
But there is another undeniable fact: This &#39;pleasure&#39; is killing you. Again we must be brutally honest here. Everyday, you are systemically destroying your health.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This is the conflict all smokers face.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
On the one hand, smoking is killing you and you desperately want to stop.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
..And yet on the other hand, you don&#39;t really want to stop because you believe you really enjoy it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Yet, one other truth cannot be denied and this applies to every smoker.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We are terrified of how we will F-E-E-L when we can&#39;t smoke. We are convinced it will be unbearable and impossible.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
FEAR&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Right now, the ONLY thing -- yes, THE ONLY THING stopping you from quitting smoking is this fear of how YOU WILL FEEL WHEN YOU STOP.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
And yet this very fear is the actual key to quitting smoking naturally.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Quitting smoking is really all about learning HOW to deal with the cravings and feelings you WILL get when you stop.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When you learn how to do that - you will realize that there is nothing to fear when you give up.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
What is there to fear?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When you get the craving to smoke, which you will, again and again - - you will now take the OPPORTUNITY to &#39;change&#39; or &#39;transform&#39; that craving so that it is actually enjoyable or at least tolerable to experience.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Imagine.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You have decided to give up smoking. It&#39;s dinnertime.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You have finished a day&#39;s work.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You finish your meal and ..... subconsciously, you reach for a cigarette. But then, of course you remember you no longer smoke.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Bang! At that moment, certain gut feelings will arise.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Feelings of regret........a feeling that you are missing out on something important and then maybe..... terrible feelings of emptiness..... We all know how it feels.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
But the real question is: How will you deal with this feeling -- this craving to smoke?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Will you just suffer it, try to repress it and hope that it will go away? That is one option. The old willpower method.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Or will you give in to the feeling -- and start to smoke again (promising to start again tomorrow)?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Or will you - - for the first time ever: - - follow our instructions and actually ALLOW yourself to transform the feeling/craving so that it is actually enjoyable or at least pleasant or tolerable enough to experience.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You see, when you can do that, you will no longer be AFRAID of these cravings when you stop smoking.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In fact, you will start to WELCOME them because they will give you another opportunity to RESPOND and DEAL with them in this NEW WAY.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This process is the essence of quitting smoking naturally and finding it a pleasant and life-affirming experience.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Weight-loss?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Are you now beginning to see how these principles can also apply to losing weight.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You see a beautiful cake. You want to eat it....when BANG! -- You remember you are on a diet.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Now watch HOW YOU feel when this happens?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Couldn&#39;t we describe it as.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&#39;Feelings of regret........a feeling that you are missing out on something important and then maybe..... terrible feelings of emptiness.&lt;br /&gt;

Isn&#39;t it essentially the same feeling as not being able to smoke?&lt;br /&gt;

However, the real question is the same with smoking: How will you DEAL with this feeling - this craving to eat?&lt;br /&gt;

Will you GIVE IN to it -- and eat the cake or will you try and FORCE yourself not to eat it- and be miserable?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Why not consider our alternative?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Accept this feeling, this desire to eat. But, instead of giving in to it, learn how to deal and respond to it in a NEW way so that you don&#39;t MIND experiencing it?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Transform the craving so that it is actually enjoyable or very pleasant to experience.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Joy of quitting Smoking?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Remember, when you stop - yes, you WILL feel something but there will be no physical agony, only a temporary feeling that you are MISSING OUT on something. A feeling that you are being deprived of something SPECIAL --- but these feelings will ONLY be temporary.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
However, to quit smoking successfully and to start to enjoy doing it we must go deeper than these temporary cravings.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We must realize that:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You find it difficult or impossible to stop smoking now because......... you BELIEVE ABSOLUTELY that you NEED to smoke and even deeper, you BELIEVE that if you give up smoking now, your life will never be as ENJOYABLE again.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In one sentence: You believe your life will be intolerable.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It is these beliefs that makes quitting smoking difficult NOT Nicotine addiction.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Right now, you are not only physically addicted to smoking but you are psychologically dependent or addicted to smoking.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If your addiction were purely physical wouldn&#39;t all these nicotine patches have a 100% success record!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Yet, we all know that even if we use a nicotine substitute, we will still continue to feel a terrible desire to smoke.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Again and again, we&#39;ll feel we must have a cigarette. At times, it will even get to the stage where we just don&#39;t care - even the most dire health warnings will have no affect on us - we just WANT to smoke. Where does this desire come from ?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It comes from our conditioning, our beliefs about smoking.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This moment, we believe that smoking is an essential pleasure. In fact, most of us have a terrible resistance to EVEN thinking about quitting smoking.&lt;br /&gt;

Why ?&lt;br /&gt;

Because we believe that in order to do anything about our addiction, i.e. give up smoking -- we would have to end our pleasure and ending pleasure is something we have NO DESIRE to do.&lt;br /&gt;

It seems that the areas of weight control and nutrition are amongst the most popular of all reading materials, with many well-known stores stocking no fewer than 80 different dietary plans espousing the various virtues of high fat vs low fat, high protein vs low protein and high carb vs low carb. There quite simply has never been a time in history when so much information has been made readily available to us in the fields of human nutrition and biochemistry. As fitness professionals we should be jumping for joy!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;a name=&#39;more&#39;&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Yet, before we pat ourselves on the back and congratulate ourselves for a job well done we would do well consider the fruits of our collective labour.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Despite (or perhaps because of) our increasing knowledge of the chemical qualities of foods, it is a sad fact that there are currently more clinically and morbidly obese people on the planet than at any other point in history, with statisticians from many first world countries predicting worse yet to come. And it?s not just obesity that?s on the rise; Diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, mental illness and even cancer have reached record levels too, signifying that the human metabolism has finally reached breaking point and can no longer cope with the excessive demands placed upon it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Clearly, our understanding of nutrition is lacking. It is time to examine the wisdom of our current nutritional strategies and change our paradigms regarding the dietary advice we give our clients.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Problem&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As fitness professionals we are often called upon to make judgements about the quality and quantity of food that our clients eat in order to maintain and improve their health. Armed with our nutritional advisor certifications and a little extra reading we often find ourselves advising our clients about the foods that they should or should not eat, classifying some foods like fruit and vegetables as ?good? whilst we advise that red meats and saturated fats are ?bad? and should be avoided at all costs.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
These generalisations allow fitness professionals to offer non-prescriptive advice to the masses, for what is generally regarded as ?healthy eating? or a ?balanced diet?. The advice we give our clients has become so accepted as fact that rarely, if ever, do we stop to question the efficacy of this advice, the wisdom behind it and the effect it will have on those that follow it. Rarer yet do we ask the most important question of all;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Good or bad for whom?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Case For Biochemical Individuality&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When Lucretius first said ?One man?s food is another man?s poison? he hit the nail right on the head as far our individual nutritional requirements are concerned.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Indeed, the ancient Romans of Lucretius? time, the ancient Greeks of Hippocrates era and the ancient practitioners of Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine were very well-studied in human health and were fully aware of food?s amazing power to heal and revitalise as well as it?s potentially destructive properties. Yet, far from the prescriptive ?one size fits all? approach offered by modern nutritional experts, these healers of yesteryear recognised that the healing powers lay not in the food itself but more specifically, how that food interacted with the individual.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In more recent times, researchers like Dr Weston A. Price and Dr Royal Lee have noted from their observations of the indigenous cultures from around the globe, that macro and micro nutrient intake varies greatly from region to region without impairment to the health and well-being of those that survive on their own native diets.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For example, the Inuit Eskimo?s of Northern Alaska subsist almost exclusively on seal and whale meat and fat with kelp, nuts and berries forming the remainder. This diet, high in saturated fats and protein breaks every ?rule? of modern western diets yet the Inuit people living on it lead healthy, vital lives and are virtually disease-free. Similarly, yet at the other end of the nutritional spectrum, are the Quetchus Indians of South America who live on predominantly vegetarian diets and yet are still afforded the same benefits of disease-free good health.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It is interesting to note that in each of these cases, that the indigenous peoples surviving on very different and even what would be considered extreme dietary variations are able to maintain a level of health and wellness that is virtually unheard of in western society and yet, when introduced to foods not native to their own geographic regions they exhibit the same illnesses and diseases that are now so rife in the industrialised world.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Quick to pick up on this fact was Dr Roger Willams Ph.D an outstanding biochemist who noted that just as we all have unique fingerprints, iris patterns and external physical characteristics, so too do our internal environments exhibit a distinct individuality also. In fact, Williams discovered that on every level from organ size and shape, to acid/alkaline balance to endocrine system dominance we are each individually unique with unique responses to each and every stimulus that is presented to us?including food.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It would seem that Lucretius was right all along!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Metabolic Typing ? Identifying the biochemical types&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Our modern knowledge of biochemical identification owes a lot to the work of three men in particular, Dr William Kelly, Dr George Watson and William Wolcott. These men, through extensive research and more than a little trial and error, spent years identifying and recording the characteristics of foods and their interactions with human biochemistry. This accumulated knowledge has resulted in the science that we now call metabolic typing.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Far from the trial and error that it once was, metabolic typing has developed into a science founded on strict principles that allow practitioners to identify specific biochemical interactions that are of benefit or hindrance to each individual. In particular, metabolic typing advisors are trained to identify and understand nine separate systems that are responsible for maintaining biochemical homeostasis.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
These are:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
?The oxidative system ? The rate at which fuels are oxidised after consumption. For example, fast oxidisers will use up glucose rapidly and run out of available energy for maintenance and repair. These individuals will require diets that are higher in fat and protein, providing a ?slow-burn? of fuel. Slow oxidisers on the other hand will not be able to get their energy from fat and protein fast enough and will require greater carbohydrates in their diets in order to remain balanced.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
?The Autonomic Nervous System ? The ANS controls all ?automatic? bodily functions such as heart rate, respiration and digestion. Divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic branches, the ANS can provide either an excitatory stimulus ?fight or flight? or an inhibitory one ?rest and digest?. We are usually more dominant in one of these areas than the other and can have our balance thrown out further still by ingesting foods that stimulate either branch.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
?Catabolic/Anabolic balance ? The human body regularly fluctuates between anabolic and catabolic cycles as part of its natural diphasic rhythm. Often though, as a result of a stress that the body cannot cope with it becomes locked into one cycle with energy system disruption occurring as a result. In response to this disruption the cell membrane will either increase or decrease in permeability making nutrient provision and retention difficult.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
?Acid/Alkaline Balance ? George Watson?s excellent book ?Nutrition and your mind? highlighted the importance of acid/alkaline balance in treating psychological disorders without drugs. Specifically, he noted that rather than the acid/alkaline qualities of the foods consumed it was their interaction with the biochemistry of the individual that determined their effects. Imbalances here will often cause respiratory and renal stress to increase.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
?Endocrine type ? Research has found that we are each dominated by one of our four endocrine glands. For some it will be adrenal or thyroid whilst for others it may be pituitary or gonads. These glands determine how much excess weight may accumulate on the body. In addition, it is known that specific foods can stimulate specific glands into over or under-production and create unnecessary weight retention.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
?Prostaglandin Balance ? Prostaglandins are made from fatty acids and are involved in virtually every metabolic activity. Disruption to prostaglandin balance can affect hormone production, neurotransmission, immune efficiency, circulation and inflammatory processes as well as others. It is vital to regain balance of PG1 through the reduction of trans-fatty acids (PG2 ?vegetable oils) and the correct ratio of PG1(omega6) to PG3 (Omega 3).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
?Blood Type ? In Dr Peter J. D?amo?s book ?Eat Right for your type? he introduces the concept of blood-group biased diets that identify our nutritional requirements based upon our ancestral genetic biochemistry. Metabolic typing recognises this as a contributory factor to biochemical balance yet due to global migration and inter-racial breeding across the last few generations this is seen as less important. However, blood typing gives us a good idea about foods that you should avoid.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
?Constitutional Type ? Probably the least ?proven? yet still highly effective area of metabolic typing relates to your constitutional type. Based upon ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine this relates to the elements wood, fire, earth, metal and water and how they present within the individual foods and the individuals themselves.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
?Electrolyte/fluid balance ? When the body fluids become imbalanced or depleted the ability to transport vital nutrients is also seriously affected. In the case of dehydration for example, fluids become more concentrate and ?sluggish? affecting the delivery of nutrients to where they are needed. This can alter endocrine response, acid/alkaline balance and create further negative consequences ?downstream?.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The resulting information from a metabolic typing assessment will lead the advisor to steer their clients to one of three primary dietary protocols:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The carbohydrate type, for example is instructed to eat from carbohydrate rich food groups with plenty of starch and moderate glycemic index values. Although encouraged to eat proteins at every meal their quantity will be low-moderate and ALWAYS of the lower purine, leaner types.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Protein dominant type on the other hand is encouraged to eat diets high in fat, high in protein from heavier, darker meats and lower in carbohydrates.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Mixed types as you may well guess are allowed to eat from both ends of the spectrum.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Far from these three base types however, are myriad permutations allowing for individual factors to be addressed in relation to specific foods and macronutrients ratios. It is this flexibility and adaptability to individual needs that makes metabolic typing such a powerful tool in the arsenal of the health and fitness professional.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In short, metabolic typing is NOT about addressing the effects of ill health such as obesity, hypertension and heart disease, rather it focuses on the simple premise that ??the quality of every activity in the body, whether it be physiological, psychological or biochemical in nature, depends on the rate, quality and amount of energy available?. In other words it addresses the root cause of our clients? health problems and focuses on building health rather than tackling disease.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The question that we should be asking ourselves then is this; ?if the cause of ill health no longer exists, how can there possibly be an effect??&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

What makes green tea so special?&lt;br /&gt;

The secret of green tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant: besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots. The latter takes on added importance when you consider that thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Links are being made between the effects of drinking green tea and the &quot;French Paradox.&quot; For years, researchers were puzzled by the fact that, despite consuming a diet rich in fat, the French have a lower incidence of heart disease than Americans. The answer was found to lie in red wine, which contains resveratrol, a polyphenol that limits the negative effects of smoking and a fatty diet. In a 1997 study, researchers from the University of Kansas determined that EGCG is twice as powerful as resveratrol, which may explain why the rate of heart disease among Japanese men is quite low, even though approximately seventy-five percent are smokers.&lt;br /&gt;

Why don&#39;t other Chinese teas have similar health-giving properties? Green, oolong, and black teas all come from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. By contrast, black and oolong tea leaves are made from fermented leaves, which results in the EGCG being converted into other compounds that are not nearly as effective in preventing and fighting various diseases.&lt;br /&gt;

Kale, collards, mustard greens, and spinach are supreme in the vegetable world. About 700,000 strokes occur each year in the United States, approximately one-fourth of which are fatal and an additional one-fourth of which leave patients permanently disabled, according to background information in the article. There are two main types of stroke: ischemic, the more common type, in which a blocked artery causes a lack of blood flow to the brain; and hemorrhagic,&lt;/div&gt;&lt;a name=&#39;more&#39;&gt;&lt;/a&gt;which occurs when a ruptured blood vessel causes blood to leak into the brain. Several individual risk factors, including smoking, exercise and body mass index (BMI), have been linked to stroke. However, in contrast to studies assessing risk for heart disease and diabetes, researchers have not previously examined how the combination of these behaviors may contribute to stroke.&lt;br /&gt;
Tobias Kurth, M.D., Sc.D., Brigham and Women&#39;s Hospital and Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, and colleagues studied the association between healthy lifestyles and stroke risk in 37,636 women age 45 years or older. At the beginning of the study, in 1993, the women answered questions about their smoking habits, alcohol consumption, diet, exercise routine and body mass index. From their responses, the researchers gave each woman a health index score that ranged from zero to 20, with a higher score indicating a healthier lifestyle. Healthy behavior was defined as never smoking, consuming four to 10.5 alcoholic drinks per week, exercising four or more times per week, having a body mass index of less than 22 and maintaining a healthy diet. This included consuming high levels of cereal fiber, folate and omega-3 fatty acids, a high ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fat and low levels of trans fat and glycemic load.&lt;br /&gt;

During an average of 10 years of follow-up, 450 women had strokes; 356 were ischemic, 90 were hemorrhagic and four were undefined. The 4.7 percent of women with 17 to 20 health index points had a significantly lower risk of stroke overall and of ischemic stroke specifically than women with zero to four health index points. This association remained significant even when the researchers considered some of the common consequences of unhealthy lifestyles, including high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.&lt;br /&gt;
