In the end of 2009, I joined Project52 — suggesting people to sign up on their website and for a personal blog challenge. The challenge is to write at least one article in your blog every week during the whole year.

Project52 is a personal challenge geared toward getting fresh content on your website. The goal is to write at least 1 new article per week for 1 year. Because we all know what it‘s like to procrastinate on our content. A website is not just a fresh design that can be uploaded to the web and forgotten about!

My suggestion is that you join in and share your content. Happy writing!

One month after I applied for a beta account on Cargo Collective and set it up with some of my favourite current work, I get an e-mail saying that they will go public and out of beta. This means that you still have to apply and some seriveces will cost money. Like custom CSS, custom URL and other customizations.

Current members will have 50% off on the prizes, which is really good. But, I don’t want to pay for my heartworker.com domain AND my portfolio space.

My ambition was to blog here and use my second domain joelhelin.com as a business portfolio when applying for internships and so on. But this made me look for other alternatives.

Conclusion

I want to use heartworker.com as both portfolio & blog and link joelhelin.com directly to the portfolio part. I don’t want to pay more to have them seperated, when it acutally doesn’t do me any good.

So, my question is: how did you build your portfolio? Are you using plugins for WordPress or did you build you own CMS?

So, today I spiced up my desk at Hyper Island with some hand-crafted NES love. Sorry for the poor picture quality. Blame Apple.

A couple of days ago Petter Warnsberg, explorer within the digital media had a lecture about the footprints we make online, and what they really mean.

I won’t give you the whole lecture here, but I will share some of my insights that I’ve come up with applying this to the blogo-sphere that most designers are a part of.

The topic that I find most interesting is: how do you earn attention? And I don’t mean the fifteen minutes of fame-kind, I mean the real kind of followers that makes you into that rockstar designer we all/some of us wish to become.

My insights.

One of the conclusions I’ve come up with is that talent obviously has something to do with it, and that you’re digital footprints are one great way to achieve this.

This means that every comment you make, every blog post you write, every community you register to, and practically everything you contribute to online is in some way a business card linked to your website and/or portfolio.

If you make good comments or make a contribution in some way – people will notice you. It could be a feature in a css portal, a feature in smashing magazine, a comment on a famous persons blog etc.

So, what do I do?

Take initiative. Interview people for personal projects and gain some insights in how they’ve become successfull in the field you want to grow in. But the most important thing is to love what you do and embrace it.

I recently interviewed Elliot Jay Stocks for a school project about the future of digital media. At first, I thought he could be fairly easy to get hold of, and there was a chance that he might have a interest in talking to us about this since it’s kind of his area in some way. I never knew that he’d actually would be more than glad to do it and talk with a passion that I still today wonder if it’s scary or not (that’s a joke actually…).

The result? He followed me back on Twitter. Which I think really shows how you can get attention from the people that might not even spot you in all the information that is online today.

You own the internet, use it wisely.
