Firstly, Florida is as famous for Disneyworld as it is its sumptuous beaches. 100 miles west will land you at what is arguably the state’s most beautiful beaches at Clearwater and St. Petersburg. The total serenity of the faultless white sand and crystal clear waters of the gulf are something truly to behold. En-route you can take in the city of Tampa which is packed with activities for both adults and children alike such as the nearby Busch Gardens theme park in Tampa Bay, the Museum of Science and Industry, The Florida Aquarium and Adventure Island.

From Clearwater, let Interstate 275 take you across the bridge over Tampa Bay to another popular destination on the Gulf Coast – Sarasota. The drive down to Sarasota in the warm Florida sunshine will quickly indicate you to the sheer magnificence of western Florida. Sarasota itself is perfect for the culture vultures out there thanks to the number of museums, superb restaurants, shops, nightspots, theatres and more. The beaches here are also to be marvelled at, likewise the opportunities open for the outdoor types, with golf, tennis and water sports always popular.

The adventure continues from here with a two-hour drive on Interstate 75 to Naples. Again, the possibilities are endless. As well as the truly stunning beaches there is also an excellent zoo and boat tours to Marco Island to busy yourself with. Naples also boasts many pretty parkland areas simply to relax in.

Stopping at Naples perfectly breaks up the journey as you head for the unforgettable Everglades National Park. This internationally-famous World Heritage Site is the home to crocodiles, manatees, 350 species of birds, 300 species of fish and has the largest mangrove ecosystem in the Western Hemisphere!

After this adventure, get yourself back to civilisation by visiting the unmistakeable city of Miami. Go to South Beach, visit the art deco buildings, laze by the beach, enjoy cooking from around the world or go on a shopping spree; Miami is a true one-off.

As the journey heads north back towards Orlando there is still much to discover and enjoy. Fort Lauderdale for example is famous for its canals and waterways, plus the Florida Riviera is always on hand should you be ready to get yourself back on the beach! In fact there is almost 190 miles worth of golden sand to spoil yourself with (including sumptuous Palm Beach) until reaching Kennedy Space Centre, where you will be bowled over at the incredible feats achieved by America’s space program and be able to see shuttles from past missions, artefacts and also the devastatingly huge hangar where the next shuttle for launch is being prepared.

This leaves you just 44 miles from Orlando, or if you’re still not tired of the beach; Daytona is just 80 miles north!

The CN Tower – this is Toronto's tallest structure – one of the tallest in the world - and one of the most popular tourist attractions. It features a glass floor and observation deck, where you can see the city from a whole new perspective, 342 metres above. From Hotel to History - Touring Barcelona by Bicycle

Boasting the second largest population of any other city in Spain, Barcelona is certainly not an exemplary city when it comes to reducing environmental impact. However, Barcelona does have a number of programs already in place and others that are on the way which aim to reduce the amount of pollution for which this popular tourist destination is responsible. A fairly efficient public transportation is just one way Barcelona city managers hope to cut back on unnecessary pollution. Another more controversial effort that is being made is with their efforts to become a more bike-friendly city.

Barcelona city has promoted the usage of bicycles throughout the city in a couple different ways. First off, bike lanes have been put in place in some of the main sections of the city. Separate bike lanes have historically proven to encourage bike usage simply because riders feel a little more safe being separated from the regular flow of cars and buses in the streets. In addition to bike lanes, a number of solutions for bike storage have also been proposed and implemented to address peoples’ fear of getting a bike stolen or not being able to find a parking space when they arrive at their destination.

In 2007, Barcelona also implemented a fairly controversial bike-sharing program available to all residents. This program again was after other similar programs in other cities throughout Europe. The program works like this; registered riders can pick up a bike at any of several hundred bike stations and ride for up to 30-minutes without a charge. When the rider arrives at his or her destination, the bike needs to be returned at any other bike station. Thus far, the program has been fairly successful. A few quirks in with the availability of bikes are being dealt with but overall, the program seems to be working.

Unfortunately, the bike-share program is not currently available to tourists but the city’s other efforts to become more bike-friendly are starting to effect tourists, too. Several bike tour and bike rental companies offer tourists a cheap alternative to public transportation. Since Barcelona has become fairly bicycle-friendly, many tourists find that bicycle tours and rentals are a safe and fun way to explore the city, especially in the late summer months. Guided tours typically provide visitors with everything they need for a brief 3 hour tour. Many of these tours cover several attractions in just a short amount of time, leaving time at each attraction for a quick break and chance to take photos.

Bike rental services are also becoming more popular in some of the more popular hotels in Barcelona. Typically, guests can arrange for a bicycle, gear and tour map from the concierge. This is often the most convenient way for tourists to see the city as they can leave directly from their hotel.

As with any public service project, the success or failure of Barcelona’s bike programs will be guided by the public’s reaction and utilization of the program. For now, it looks like the positive response will drive the government to expand its greening efforts and hopefully encourage other cities to follow suit.

Le Reve Review

I had the pleasure of seeing Le Reve last weekend at the Wynn in Las Vegas and was quite taken by the whimsical approach to the famed spectaculars from Franco Dragone. I’m not a regular to the theater and have only seen 2 other cirque du Soleil shows before. I saw Mystere years ago which was my first introduction to the acrobatic, sensual style of movement from Cirque du Soleil and then I saw O at the Bellagio more recently which was on a completely different level. If O was ethereal and mystical, then Le Reve would fall into sultry, dark and sensual...teasing the senses with hints of eroticism in the dancing and movement.

The show is a mix of comedy, lust and the mystical underworld. If you are scared off by mystery and demon-like creatures this may not be the show for you. I happen to be enthralled by darkness and loved the play between the good and evil and passionate dancing. Because the show is literally portraying a dreams it seems to jump without a transition from theme to theme without warning but it works.

If you are a fan of Dragone you are in for a treat. Unlike O, there is Latin influence in the dancing and I loved the passionate tangos performed. The circular stage rises up and down with splashes of water emphasizing the strike of every precise step. In one scene a beautiful fountain rises from the pool of water and the male dancers take turns ravaging their women and then diving off into the water only to come back for more. Your breath will be taken away by the beautiful dancers and creatures soaring through the sky flipping, twisting, turning and leaping in and out of the water with precision and beauty.

The icing on the cake was ogling at the chiseled perfect bodies of all the dancers causing me to feel a bit guilty for downing a bag of caramel corn. I would highly recommend Le Reve when you are in Las Vegas next. I was there for a bachelorette party and it fueled our fire for a night of fun!

When you think of Las Vegas, the first that probably comes to mind is gambling, followed by the notorious “sin city” name that was dubbed many years ago. However, Vegas can provide an excellent family vacation experience with its many kid-friendly hotels – but more importantly, its kid-friendly thrills.

The Adventuredome is Vegas’ premier indoor adventure theme park. Located at Circus Circus on the Strip, the Adventuredome offers a variety of entertainment options from gut-wrenching roller coasters to more subtle adventures to the younger kids. For those too small for rides, jugglers and magicians entertain. Families can purchase individual ride tickets or full day fun passes.

Also located on the Strip is Coney Island Emporium at the New York, New York Hotel. (There seems to be a theme with double word hotels offering kid-friendly entertainment.) The Emporium offers an afternoon of fun-filled arcade entertainment. With over 200 video, midway, and carnival games to choose from, excitement abounds from every corner. Entrance is free and games can be paid for individually. While at the New York, New York, don’t forget to ride the roller coaster!

There are other kid-friendly entertainment options that abound in the Las Vegas area. If you do an Internet search for kid-friendly entertainment in Las Vegas, you will have plenty of options. One thing to consider before heading off to fun land is the purchase of a Las Vegas PowerPass. The PowerPass offers a sampling of the best twenty things attractions and adventures in Las Vegas. The pass can also save quite a huge chunk of change in admission costs.

Must-See Museums of Madrid

As the capital city of Spain, Madrid is considered to be a cultural center while also boasting the liveliest nightlife in all of Europe. Throughout the city, visitors find medieval architecture, monolithic cathedrals and museums housing artifacts and art work from around the world. One could easily spend weeks in Madrid and still not cover all the notable museums so here’s a list of the most notable of all the Madrid museums:

El Museo del Prado
Since 1819, El Prado has housed artwork from some of the most notable artists in the world and is considered to be the largest art gallery in the world. With over 1,000 paintings and several thousand other drawings, prints, sculptures and other pieces of art, el Prado acts as a Mecca for art lovers worldwide. Notable artists whose work you’ll find here include Rafael, Rembrandt, Bartolome Bermejo, El Greco, Hans Memling, Diego Velazquez and many, many more. The most notable pieces of artwork include Las Meninas (Velazquez), Decent of Christ from the Cross (Weyden) and The Annuntiation (Angelico).

El Prado is open 6 days per week while remaining closed on Mondays. Tickets are fairly cheap (around $10 for adults) or free (weeknights from 6-8 and Sunday from 5-8). For about $50 per year, a membership can be purchased allowing unlimited access to the museum. Group rates and tour guides are also available for an extra fee.

National Archeology Museum
There’s no better way to learn about the archeological history of Spain than with a visit to Museo Arqueologico Nacional. The main collections which can be found in the museum include Prehistory, Settlers, Egypt, Greek and Rome, Modern Age and Coins & Medals. Additionally, the National Library is part of the museum.

The National Archeology Museum is open from 9:30-8:00 Tuesday-Saturday and on Sunday from 9:30-3:00 and is closed on Mondays. Currently, there is no charge to access the museum and weekdays are the best time to avoid the crowds. Group tours are also available for an extra fee.

There is no doubt that the many other museums, galleries and attractions are worthwhile visiting points on any trip to Madrid. However, if your time and short and you want the most bang for your buck, consider El Museo del Prado and the National Archeology Museum as your first choices. Within these two museums, you’ll be exposed to highlights of the artwork and history of Spain and from around the world.

The Boneyard

The strip has undergone some dramatic changes through the years. The people who lived in Las Vegas before the Strip became known as Sin City will recall the dawn of the neon signs. Bright, flashing lights flooded the streets as hotels, mega-resorts, and casino’s began to blossom along Las Vegas Boulevard.

Some will recall the yesteryear that was the Golden Nugget, Binion’s Horseshoe, and the Silver Slipper. Once these buildings were demolished, the signs were rescued and left for viewing pleasure at what is now known as the Neon Boneyard. According to the boneyard’s website, “The Neon Museum’s mission is to collect, preserve, study, and exhibit neon signs and associated artifacts to inspire educational and cultural enrichment for diverse members of our international community.”

The collection is unparalleled and can be viewed through private walking tours. Situated on three acres, these signs are sure to impress. Tours are offered Tuesday through Saturday, twice daily. Be sure to check their website as the times for these tours change throughout the year. Could you imagine a walking tour during high noon under the beaming Las Vegas sun? Neither can the tour operator which is why they choose to change the time.

Las Vegas is rich in history and seeing how far the city has come in terms of its neon propaganda is truly amazing. No trip to Las Vegas would be complete without seeing the amazing feat that was once Las Vegas. Be sure to book your tours far in advance as they sell out quickly!

Golfing in Las Vegas

Not every vacation destination is home to world-class golf courses but did you expect Las Vegas to be one of them? Of course not. In the midst of a desert this city boasts some of the most beautiful greens in the country. Las Vegas is quite an expansive city; however finding a golf course right along the strip is not as difficult as one may think.

Like the themed hotels along Las Vegas Boulevard, Bali Hai Golf Course transports visitors to another world full of lush tropical foliage. The course features seven acres of water hazards, 4,000 trees and 100,000 other tropical plants. White sand and volcanic rock brings the island feeling right to your feet.

If 18 holes and a Par 71 does not appeal to you, take your game to the Callaway Golf Center. Located on the south side of the strip, Callaway is a par-three course with a Golf Performance Center and Golf Shop. If you would rather work on your swing and avoid a long day of golf, grab your clubs and head to their 100-stall driving range.

The last course situated on the Strip is the Wynn Golf and Country Club. Designed by Tom Fazio and Steve Wynn, this course takes golfing in the desert to a whole new level. This 18-hole, Par 70 features actual elevation changes not see in the other Strip courses. Over 800,000 cubic yards of dirt were moved to create the 45 feet of elevation on the course. Along the course are 100,000 shrubs, two marshlands, and roughly 1,200 trees. The centerpiece of the 18th hole? None other than a 37-foot waterfall.

There are other courses throughout Las Vegas; however these are the only ones you will find on the Strip. Be prepared to pay a hefty fee. The Wynn Golf and Country Club green fees can run up to $500 while Bali Hai starts at $200. A multitude of other courses are available, if you are willing to head away from Las Vegas Boulevard.

The Prairies and Lakes Region of Texas is a large region that houses famous cities like Dallas and Fort Worth. The old cliché saying “everything is bigger in Texas” rings true in this region that spans more than 350 miles from its northern to southern border. There is something about the vibe that Texas gives off, whether you are in a busy city or a more laid back farming locale. The Prairies and Lakes region has endless activities to offer, both in the city and in the country. You are sure to find something for everyone on your trip.

Dallas, Texas has been the center and heart of many famous movies and films. It is no wonder, considering Dallas is one of the largest cities in the entire country. Here you can tour the largest honky tonk in the world, Billy Bob’s Texas. If that isn’t cowboy enough for you, take a tour at the Stockyards National Historic District. Here you will find the Stockyards Collection & Museum, which gives a great view of history. The Fort Worth Zoo is fun for the family, with over 200 native Texas animals. Another unique and fun activity in Fort Worth is the National Cowgirl Museum

Waco, Texas is located in the southern part of the Prairies and Lakes region. Waco is considered the heart of the region, and the busy city holds up to its name. If you are looking for an outdoor oasis, then look no further than Tryst. The second of the Wynn nightclubs, Tryst is an outdoor (but indoor) masterpiece. As you enter, directly ahead will be a giant waterfall, viewable from most places inside the club. Yes, I said it – a waterfall inside Tryst, inside the Wynn. D.J. Justin Hoffman spins the latest Top 40, hop-hop, mash-ups and house music while you tear up the dance floor or sit at one of the many tables surrounding the lagoon.

If you are looking for an Asian-inspired night, then you are in luck. TAO, located inside the Venetian, offers Asian-influence in the heart of Sin City. This nightclub has everything you are looking for – lounge, restaurant, dance floor, all in a separate space. If you are interested in an intimate dinner for two or a night of power-dancing, this club has it covered. Then entrance is lined with rose petal-filled bathtubs and red mood lighting. The first floor houses the lounge and restaurant area complete with a giant Buddha while the second floor houses the club area. Each room offers unique music and different bars, one of which is adorned with hundreds of Buddha’s and candles.

The entrance to LAX is grandioso at its best. Housed in the Luxor, huge, gothic-style gates greet clubbers as they make their way in to the club. The club is covered with lots of red and black and low sexy lighting sets the mood. LAX is two stories, connected by a grand entrance staircase. Each level houses a VIP seating area, dance floor, and bar with an elevated DJ booth in between. In the center is Noir Bar. Gothic accents are carried throughout that mimic the entryway. D.J. Vice spins a variety of music each night.

Alcatraz is probably the most famous federal penitentiary in the United States. Dubai has become a regular subject of many documentaries and news stories. This is no surprise when you consider how massive the latest hotel and resort project is in Dubai. The group of manmade islands, created solely for a resort-atmosphere, is breathtaking when viewed up close and through satellite view. One of the most outstanding creations to come from this resort plan is the Burj Al Arab Hotel.

The Burj Al Arab Hotel is currently the world’s tallest hotel that is open for business. During the Dubai hotel building, there were other hotels that were taller but were not completed. This is still true today, leaving the Burj Al Arab to hold the title. The Burj Al Arab is not only tall, it is
one of the most luxurious hotels in the world.

As with the rest of the new Dubai hotel creations, the Burj Al Arab was literally built from the ground up. The islands in the new Dubai resort area are almost exclusively manmade. This is also true for the island that the Burj Al Arab is on. The island is about 920 feet off of the main beach called Jumeirah beach. The only thing connecting the hotel to the beach is a private bridge, which makes access to the hotel even more exclusive.
