The original track – taken from Joshua’s phenomenal recent album (I Know You’re Hurting, Everyone Is Hurting, Everyone Is Trying, You Have Got To Try) – felt like a paranoid walk around the capitol during covid. Colleen Murphy’s Cosmodelica remix parts the clouds that shrouded that version and brings the sunshine right in. A bassline that bounces through the middle of the track, an irresistible percussive rhythm, and Joshua’s voice, just floating above it all. Play loud, day or night – this is the sound of the summer.

Talking about the track, Kevin Rowland said:

“When we started writing, I went to Mike [Timothy], and said: have you got any ideas? and he sent me some, and I picked out two or three, which ended up on the album, and this was one of them. It was really simple. I was seeing a woman at the time, and I wrote the lyric, and Mike and I messed around until we were happy with it. The woman is not in my life anymore, so I’ve never told her I wrote it. I suppose I should. It might be nice for her to know.”

Talking about the remix, the original of which appears on his recently released debut album, ‘I Know You’re Hurting, Everyone Is Hurting, Everyone Is Trying, You Have Got To Try’ which was out in March, Joshua said:

“This is two stories: my neighbour from my old flat in Grondal. His partner has dementia. One time when we shared a lift, he mentioned how she likes to go for walks so she has a phone on her in case she ever gets lost, but now they’re worried she might not even remember to call. The other is about a toilet attendant i met at Hootenanny Brixton (For a time, most of the toilet attendants in nightclubs around London came from my hometown of Benin City). His name was Osahon. He said back home, he was a dentist.”

His musical partner, Ludvig Parment added:

“I remember this one being one that we had a lot of discussions about and Josh originally wanted me to extend the verse with like 20 bars because he had a long story about rappers. So I was a little bit… curious, when he finally came in to record the vocals. But then he came in with those verses that I think are among my favourite lyrics of all time. I also finally got to play the vibraphone that’s been taking up like half the space of my studio for two years and mostly been functioning as a table.”

When is a record ever finished? Baxter Dury’s eighth album, Allbarone, seemed to be done and dusted after release last autumn, yet super-producer Paul Epworth (Adele, U2) decided it was a good idea to work on extensions of five of tracks from the album. Not just extensions – full on electro-disco mixes that take tracks apart from the edges and reorder them into relentless dance floor tools built to perfectly soundtrack the small hours.

For the music video we wanted to capture the essence of Irish nonsense at its best so we created “The Fairest Man” concept, inspired by Ireland’s love for a kitch & very-country pageant. Think Father Ted in 2026! Our director Olivia Mcloughin knew exactly how to bring the idea to screen and absolutely smashed it! And as for the all star cast, they had us rolling around laughing from the second the filming started. We hope everyone loves it as much as we do!“

Talking about the track, Kevin Rowland said:

“We put out a version of this song on a compilation album in 2003, but I felt we could improve on it. I wrote it a long time ago with Jim [Patterson], along with ‘My Life in England Pt. 2’. It’s all memories of my own experiences. Pete, that’s my brother. In my book [Bless Me Father], I changed his name to Pat. There’s quite a lot of overlap with the book in this one. We were in England dreaming of America: it was pre-Beatles, so it was Elvis, it was Sonny Liston, Cassius Clay, clothes, all of it was America. In the second verse, I’m remembering being in a social club listening to everyone singing Kevin Barry [a song about 18 year-old medical student and IRA soldier Kevin Barry, executed by the British government on 1st November, 1920] and my mum telling me ‘This song’s not allowed in England’. It was daytime, and all the curtains were drawn, everyone drinking, singing an illegal song. I remember thinking, Wow, yes, exciting! My childhood memories, I just wrote them down. You can’t really write on behalf of anybody else. Though I realised later that when I was growing up in north-west London, loads of the kids around there were second generation Irish. All obsessed with being up the front with the best clothes, with dancing to the new records.“
