TIL: the reason why lightning can do this is…The water is pumped through this area, upwards to the leaves. When lightning strikes, it brings this water to a boil, cause a steam explosion which blows the bark from the tree.

“Onement VI” from abstract expressionist painter Barnett Newman sold on Tuesday at a Sotheby’s auction for $43.8 million dollars.

OK, OK, the 8.5ft by 10ft dark blue canvas with Newman’s distinctive ‘zip’ running through the center, was painted in 1953…but its still just a blue canvas with a white line.

Until yesterday, Onement V held the previous auction record for Newman. It sold for $22.4 million last year.

If Newman was still alive, his next painting…a canvas painted red with a white line, would probably fetch $50 million.

That’s right… Over the course of 18 months, Frank Ohle figured out all of the ridiculously improbable steps involved in turning his chopper into a plane/motorcycle hybrid — that includes fitting a custom chassis, painting, suspension and electronics — and ended up with an absolutely insane, incredibly noisy nine-cylinder super-nut-job bike.

This is a man who doesn’t ask why but rather WHY NOT?
