Who Shot First?

An article about Al Franken warning against Nevada senate candidate Sharron Angle made the Drudge headlines the other day. In the article, Franken is quoted saying that Angle "who can’t stop bringing up the prospect of armed revolt.”

Though peaceful resolutions should always be the alternative to violent ones, it's the government that seems to make peaceful methods impossible (cue overused JFK quote). Here we have a man, who represents the government (not the people, politicians are not your servants), who criticizes the use of force by the people he supposedly represents, but then defends actions by the government who do the same thing.

Sometimes I wish politicians could see the irony in their arguments. If I refuse to pay taxes: the government uses force to arrest me, and puts me in jail. If I refuse to participate in a military draft: the government uses force to arrest me, and puts me in jail. If I refuse to follow drug laws: the government uses force to arrest me, and puts me in jail. If I refuse to obtain a building permit: the government uses force to arrest me, and puts me in jail. If I refuse to obtain a business license: the government uses force to arrest, put me out of business, and then puts me in jail. If I refuse to obtain permission to carry my firearm for self-defense, the government uses force to arrest me, and puts me in jail.

All of the above mentioned cause no harm to others, yet somehow, the government deems it necessary to use force against someone, and lock them in a cage. So, let me ask you this, who in the U.S. has already initiated force? Who does so everyday by arresting individuals for victimless crimes and locking them up like animals? Do you believe it's a good idea to lock-up non-violent offenders with hardened, violent, career criminals?

Franken defends the right of the government to intervene and force individuals to comply at gunpoint, but when one person mentions the possibility of the people to change a government that refuses to be changed, he has a conniption. A government, if needed at all, should lead by example. You cannot expect people to obey laws when the largest, and most frequent law-breaker, is their own government.

Once again, this is not an endorsement to go blow up Capitol Hill or storm D.C., just pointing out the irony in the situation. Personally, I prefer much more peaceful, public-outreach methods opposed to violence.

Veronique de Rugy at the Mercatus Center has created a chart showing the job growth in the labor market which seems to be only happening in the public sector. Like what was said before the "stimulus" package was passed, it is now quite obvious that the "stimulus," along with the rest of the bailouts, has contributed absolutely no growth to the job market.

Important note: government cannot create jobs. When the government adds positions in the private sector it does so by using taxes. These taxes come from individuals, small businesses, and corporations. This steals from the private industry the potential to create jobs. What happens when you no longer have a private sector? Who pays for the public sector jobs then?

More Guns, Less Crime

The new FBI criminal statistics report shows a dramatic decrease in crime throughout the United States. But how could this be? There is no assault weapons ban, more people are buying guns, more people are packing heat in establishments that serve alcohol, we have allowed people to carry in the sacred national parks, and finally, the Brady Campaign gave Obama a failing grade for his first year in office. Though Mexico's President would lead you to believe that Mexican cartels are buying grenades from gun shows in America. Because we all know that if the United States banned guns tomorrow the billionaires, if not trillionaires, of the underground drug business, would be unable to purchase or even manufacture their own weapons...

Just maybe, guns are not the problem. Maybe, it's the way we choose to handle the larger issue (ex: The Drug War).

Rand Paul Is Right!

Though Rand Paul is not a Libertarian, he does share a lot of similar libertarian views as his father, Ron Paul. He is also not a career politician and has principles that differ from a lot of the crooks in D.C. One of those principles being the right to private property without government interference. Recently, the issue at hand deals with Paul believing that a certain section of the Civil Rights Act should've been left out. Now, the media, with Maddow baiting Rand, have completely blown this out proportion trying to label Paul as a racist (haven't heard that one before...). However, if one truly looks at the issue, it is a deeper cause than just race of a person.

Jim Crow laws were widely enforced in the South until the mid 1960s. And, in all honesty, no libertarian would support such laws in place. It was the government that had established the laws, and like so many other things, it was the government that enforced them.

Rand's point was not that he believes that blacks or any other ethnic minorities should be kept out of businesses, but that it is not the role of government to impose their will on privately owned businesses. This debate continues today with other issues such as: gun and smoking rights. Should an owner of his own restaurant have the right to decide if he will allow his patrons to smoke? Should an owner allow his patrons the right to defend themselves if the need arises? Finally, who owns your business, you or the government?

This entire issue shows the need to keep the marketplace free. True business owners, that compete with others for business, could care less what the color of your skin is or what God you worship. The only thing they care about is your $. That is it. If they were to refuse service to anyone due to their ethnic status it would be suicide for their business. Consumers vote with their dollars.

This biggest problem here is not this whole controversy, but instead that people believe that government must do everything for them. If force is used by government, either that being with evil Jim Crow laws or countering it with the good-intentions, but wrong Civil Rights Act, than the problem is never truly solved. There will be resentment on both sides of the issue, and this is what had led to the high racial tension in our "Melting Pot" today.

Libertarians do not see a Jewish, Black, Asian, White, or any other person based on their race; all they see is a person, an individual. People today generally see the government as the solution to all their problems. It is unpopular to disagree with a piece of legislation that most see as the only way to solve a problem (even though most problems are created by governments). However, the "crazy" libertarians have strong principles. They will not budge one bit no matter how tempting something may be if it goes against their principles. This includes standing rock solid when it comes to telling the truth. Unlike career politicians, Libertarians will not lie to get elected. If you want to know something, they will tell you what their opinion is in all honesty. Maddow took advantage of this principle, and at the time, it seemed that Rand could not defend his libertarian position. However, this does not mean he is wrong!

China: Brady Campaign's Dream

Story out of China reports that 9 people, including 7 children, at a school have been killed by a knife-wielding maniac.

How could this happen in a country that has tyrannical weapons control laws?

How could this man kill 9 people in a short amount of time? I though this was only able to be done with guns?

You can ban what you want and restrict what you want, it doesn't matter. There will always be others that want to harm people. The least you could do is give others the fighting chance to defend themselves.

U.S. Involvement in Iran: 1950 to Today

Well it seems that the United States is at it again. H.R. 2194, Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act of 2009, is being pushed into the final stages and close to being sent to the President. Vice President Biden has also commented on the need for the U.N. to impose sanctions.

A history of U.S. sanctions against foreign countries should tell us that they have no effect on the leaders. Examples:

It has been proven time and time again that the sanctions that we impose cripple our economic growth and do nothing to help the people living in the burdened countries. Yet, somehow we continue down the same path.

So what has led us to this? In 1953, the United States' own Central Intelligence Agency assisted in the overthrow of the Iranian government. Ever since, there has been instability in the country. This has led to a rise in religious Muslim "Radicals" in the government. The very same government that controls Iran today. So, does Iran need more interference from the U.S.? I say we've done enough.

In all, it seems that the U.S. will be headed into another war within a few years. Israel is determined to stop Iran at all costs from obtaining nuclear capabilities. The definition of "capabilities" is still up in the air. If Israel attacks, you can rest assured that the U.S. will be backing them up. With soldier suicide rates in our military already soaring (here and here), and America's most prominent leaders believing we should "police the world," the expense of our troops doesn't matter to our "leaders." It isn't a matter of how we do it, it is only a matter of when we bring "democracy" to Iran.

Let it also not be forgotten that the number of civilian casualties from the Iraq War is now estimated between 95,000 and 1,100,000. A war in Iran would only bring further loss of human life.

The NRA and Harry Reid

Why has the NRA abandoned gun owners, once again?
