By 2020, four out of five of your friends, coworkers, family members and neighbors will be overweight or obese, and half of them will be diabetic or pre-diabetic, according to researchers at Northwestern University. Less than 5 percent of Americans enjoy ideal cardiovascular health and today’s teens will die younger of heart disease than people of prior generations. According to Dr. Donald Lloyd-Jones, professor of medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, the current generation of teens—characterized by high blood sugar, surplus weight, poor eating habits, smoking and limited exercise—are the unhealthiest in our history. Dr. Jones bluntly predicts, “Their future is bleak.” Public health officials joylessly report another first place: obesity has replaced smoking as the leading cause of preventable death, according to an article published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine However, “Today’s reality does not dictate the future,” says Carole Carson—dubbed “An Apostle for Fitness” by the Wall Street Journal and author of From Fat to Fit: Turn Yourself into a Weapon of Mass Reduction. Here are trends and predictions that can create a positive turning point in the battle of the bulge: Exercise Trends Whole-life training, encompassing a comprehensive and holistic approach to changing one’s lifestyle to achieve [...]

It Is Not a Small World After All is an article from: Hello Boomers Magazine for the baby boomers and the baby boomer generation

By Dr. Walter St. John - Don’t try to be a preacher, doctor, or therapist. Just be you. In many ways patients aredifferent from the healthy individuals they once were. But they can still tell when you’re being phony, masking your feelings, or playing a role (especially if they know you well). It’s natural to feel uncomfortable around chronically ill people—at least initially—but the best course of action is to simply be you. If your loved one detects that you’re putting up any sort of façade, he’ll begin to wonder what your true purpose is; for example, whether you might be hiding something important from him. “When you’re around someone who’s ill, you’ll do the most good if you focus on being genuine and real,” confirms St. John. “For example, don’t feel that you have to put on a constant show of cheerfulness if you’re normally a blunt straight-shooter. And don’t feel that you need to suddenly ‘have all the answers.’ Without being insensitive, let your natural mannerisms, feelings, quirks, and words shine through. This is the best way to maintain trust and a relaxed atmosphere.” Don’t squelch uncomfortable conversations. Your chronically ill loved one will probably still want to talk about things like [...]

15 Tips for Relating To Someone Who Is Chronically Ill is an article from: Hello Boomers Magazine for the baby boomers and the baby boomer generation

“This is the kind of day a mother dreams of, watching her daughter face charges of violating a temporary restraining order. We’re just so proud”, Mom said, gushing sarcastically” The wacky Spellman family is at it again. This is a funny, funny follow-up to Lutz’s first book, the Spellman Files. Isabel Spellman may be a couple of years older, but she has no apartment (lives “between” places), has her mail forwarded to her favourite bar, and this time she picks the wrong suspect to stalk and survey. Rae, her younger sister, is now 16, finally obtains a driver’s license – I’m sure that will usher in a whole new era for the Spellmans. Rae has been in the family business, private investigation, since she was four, so I can only imagine the adventures Rae will have in a car with a GPS! Perfect brother David, well not so perfect in this novel. He’s drinking, he spends hours in his pj’s, and doesn’t show up at his law firm. Why? Well, you just have to read this romp through the streets of San Francisco. It’s hysterical how this dysfunctional family keeps laying down rules and regulation which they all break!
