Anyone else have a garden hose that looks like this 99% of the time? Yeah, me too.
My husband and I decided to fix this issue with a cute & simple DIY hose stand!

What You’ll Need

• White paint or primer
• Hose hanger
• Concrete mix
• Post cap
• 4×4 lumber
• Black paint

 We constructed this almost exactly the same way we built our DIY Address Post.

1. Paint your 4×4. We went with white for a classic look.
2. Dig a hole for your post and set it in concrete. Using a standard 6 foot post, we set 1.5 feet into the concrete and left the remaining 4.5 feet above ground. You can make your post shorter depending on how much hose you need to hang. Allow time for the concrete to set up properly.
3. Paint and attach your post cap. We painted ours black for a similar look to our DIY Address Post.
4. Attach the hose hanger to the post.

And DONE! Now instead of a messy pile of hose in our flower bed, we have a cute DIY hose stand to keep the hose untangled and off the ground.

 It’ll look even better once my flowers start filling in behind it!

I’ll be honest here. I didn’t know what Columbines were until they just appeared in our shade garden last spring, but they’ve grown well and we’ve since added additional varieties. Columbines come in different shapes depending on the type.  The wildflower varieties are a unique shape which includes rear spurs, and the double flower varieties have tons of petals for a luxurious look. Being wildflowers, they are super easy to grow from seeds!

Hello, helleborus! These winter bloomers come in many stunning varieties, particularly the double petaled ones. Always nice to have early flowers to brighten up your shade garden!

Hepatica

This beautiful wildflower can be hard to find at nurseries, but it’s certainly worth the hunt! One of the first wildflowers to bloom in the spring, hepatica thrives in shady environments and can be found in white, blue, purple, and pink.

Bleeding hearts

Bleeding hearts are classic shade flowers that come in yellow, pink, red, and white. They bloom in spring and may rebloom during the summer in cooler climates. Plant these to add a cottage feel to your garden.

I’m a sucker for the soft, cotton candy-like astilbe! We have pink and peach ones in our garden, but they also come in other colors such as white and red.

Spanish Bluebells

Spanish Bluebells can be planted in full sun to full shade and are available in white, pink, and blue varieties. These late spring bloomers grow to about 16 inches tall.

Vintage Inspired Gallery Wall

I may have spent the past year stocking up on antique frames, vintage paintings, and beautiful prints to hang in our living room… I love the idea of a gallery around the TV. Giant TVs can just look out of place in old houses, but arranging it within a gallery helps it blend in better especially if the wall behind it is dark.

I have a few antique paintings and signs, but those can get pricey so my other gallery pieces include vintage map prints (like this one of South Carolina where my husband and I got married), vintage etchings, classic painting reproduction prints (I LOVE the gorgeous light and colors of antique artwork!), old book plates, and of course a dash of something modern like the a beautiful bison print.

With a few simple tricks, I can save money on everything I buy. I recently began implementing these methods, and oh how I wish I knew about them years ago! These tricks can be easily combined to save even more, and I have already saved nearly $1,000 over the course of a few months (and I’m not even a big shopper!). I’ve also included some bonuses to help you guys save too!

1. Use Cash Back Programs

I saw commercials for Rakuten (formally called Ebates!) for years before I finally decided to give them a try. Waiting so long to sign up was a huge mistake because I have already earned over $100 from Rakuten in about 4 months. I usually get around 2-10% cash back on my purchases, and that really adds up since I buy most of my household and pet supplies online. The savings are even sweeter when I’m buying higher priced items like electronics or furniture. And since Rakuten works with my go to stores such as Amazon, this really is a no brainer.

P.S. They even offer a sweet $10 welcome bonus when you sign up!

Bonus Tip: You can book stays at most major hotels through Rakuten and get up to 10% cash back. It’s an easy way to save $100s on your next vacation!

Ok, but what about getting cash back on in store purchases? This is where Ibotta comes in. Ibotta is an app for your phone that gives you cash back on specific items you purchase. This app is what I use for grocery shopping and Target runs, and they will also give you a $10 bonus for trying it out (Use code HQLCTLT to get your bonus!).

2. Use Amazon’s Subscribe & Save

One of my favorite ways to save on Amazon is to use their Subscribe and Save program. This is an easy way to save 5-15% on your regular household purchases, plus it saves you trips to the store each month!

Just add your supplies to your cart and let Amazon know how often they should deliver them (don’t worry, you can cancel and add items any time before your month’s box ships!). You’ll automatically be given a discount on most items (usually 5%), and if you have five or more items being shipped in a month Amazon will bump your discounts up to the next savings tier (usually 15%).

So what can you find in Amazon’s Subscribe & Save shop? Lots! Groceries, cleaning supplies, make up, skin care, pet supplies, baby food and diapers, vitamin and medicine, and even car care supplies.

Since I mostly use this service for household supplies & pet food, I looked up a large bag of dog food as an example. As you can see, using the Subscribe & Save option saves you $3.75 on just this one item. I also use a cash back card on top of this for even more savings (see #3 below).

As an example of how the savings tiers work, you can see how I need to add one more item to August to get the higher discount on everything. I’ve already achieved that with October’s order.

3. Take Advantage of a Cash Back Card

This is a sure way to save money on everything you purchase. If you are responsible with credit cards, you’re leaving money on the table by not utilizing a rewards credit card. I love cash back cards, and the Discover It card has been my favorite so far. I haven’t even had it for a full year, and I’ve already gotten over $200 back!

You earn 5% cash back on rotating categories such as gas, groceries, and restaurants, and you get 1% cash back on literally everything else. And I love that at the end of your first year, they’ll match any cash back you’ve earned over the last 12 months. So you basically get 2% & 10% during your first year. You even get a $50 bonus when you sign up with this link.

4. Buy Discounted Gift Cards for Your Favorite Stores

I use Raise & Gift Card Granny to find discounted gift cards for the stores I frequently shop at. These sites have excellent refund policies and money back guarantees, so you’ll never need to worry about purchasing a bad card.

5. Get Discount Codes Automatically Applied to Your Online Purchases

I used to use RetailMeNot to look up discount codes for my online orders, but now I primarily use Honey because it’s so much easier! Just download the browser extension, and it automatically finds coupons to apply to your purchases. When you are ready to check out, Honey will remind you to apply the coupons it found. Ebates will also give you a reminder to activate your cash back if you have that installed, too! These two handy services will help you save money on everything you order online.

6. Find Out if a Local Store Price Matches

I love our local pet store, but they don’t always have the most competetive prices, so sometimes I would have to drive across town to Petsmart for certain items or order them online. But I recently found out that my local pet store has a price match policy. While they won’t match prices to online-only stores like Amazon and Chewy, they will happily match prices to Petsmart.com. I just have to show them the product page on my phone. It’s easy, saves me a few bucks, and allows me to continue supporting a locally owned business. Plus my dog loves the shopping trip!

When I first began designing our farmhouse dining room, I was feeling a bit hamstringed when choosing a rug. There are tons of beautiful neutral farmhouse rugs, and I love the look of jute and sisal rugs that perfectly embody farmhouse style. Inspiration for using beautiful Turkish rugs as part of your decor

Beautiful Turkish rugs can be used in any type of decor—from rustic farmhouse to sleek modern. I used to think a rug was just something to throw on the floor to protect it from chair legs and dog nails, but so many of these designs almost look like pieces of art and they add so much warmth and character to any room. In fact, I have so many favorites that I’m a bit sad I don’t have more rooms to use them in!

White shiplap walls, breezy white curtains, and beautiful neutral furniture make for the perfect farmhouse living room, and I love the idea of using an ornate Turkish rug for a pop of color and an added layer of traditional style.

The rug in the photo above as well as the rug pictured below both have a traditional look with a modern spin to them—they blend a timeless design with a modern color scheme.

I’ll let you in on a secret. This rug is one of my absolute favorites. I just bought it for our farmhouse dining room, and I will admit that I was nervous at first if it would would go with our farmhouse look. But it turns out, I didn’t have anything to worry about because the colors are neutral enough to go with the rest of our decor, and the antiqued design looks amazing with our old farmhouse look!

A more colorful option could work well in a neutral space.

Colorful rugs (like this one!) can also be a great way to add some fun and whimsy to a nursery, kid’s bedroom or playroom while still looking sophisticated.

I’m in love with this blush toned Turkish rug, and I have my eye on it for my someday dressing room! I originally wasn’t planning on putting a rug in my dressing room, but there are so many pretty options that it’s hard to keep a floor uncovered…

What You’ll Need for Your DIY Address Post

• Your choice of address numbers
• Minwax stain (recommended if you choose white or light-toned metal address numbers) OR
• White paint or primer (recommended if you choose dark address numbers)
• 4×4 lumber
• Solar light cap
• Plant hook bracket
• Hanging basket
• Concrete mix

I loved the idea of a DIY address post planter, so we set off to get our materials. We began by digging a hole for our post and setting it in concrete (sorry, I spaced and didn’t take photos of this part!). I chose dark bronze numbers and a medium brown stain for this project.


After a quick coat of stain, we realized we hadn’t made the best decision ever… The post and numbers were almost the same shade, and you could hardly make out our address from the road!

We ran to the barn to get a can of white primer left behind by the previous owner. (Thanks, previous owner!) Painting the post white worked out much better!After painting, we added a plant hook, a basket full of lovely purple asters, and a solar light cap to the top since it’s really dark on our street at night. Our DIY address post is complete and looking pretty dark good.

We simply placed some stones around the base of the post for now, but we’ll probably plant some flowers around it come springtime.

This is the very first step we’ve taken to fix up our home’s exterior… It’s a baby step, but one that’s a big improvement to a weedy barrel! Next step, freshen up those doors!

It’s no secret that I’ve hated our bathroom since day 1. Dingy beige tile that’s falling apart and missing in places, a broken medicine cabinet, and a generic laminate vanity… It doesn’t exactly have the farmhouse charm that this old house deserves.

I’d love to do a full gut remodel in the future featuring a claw foot tub, a beautiful tile floor, and beadboard that matches the original stuff in our kitchen, but that’s likely years away. We finally decided we couldn’t live with this ugly little room anymore and set aside a weekend for a quick makeover to transform it into a light, bright farmhouse style bathroom.

Here’s what we started with:

Our #1 priority is getting rid of the dingy square tiles on the walls. I believe it dates to the 60s or 70s, and I feel a tad guilty getting rid of something that’s been part of our house for that long, but man… it’s bad. Tiles are missing or broken in places, and previous owners already removed them from the other side of the room. (Now if they were 1950s pink tiles, that would be another story entirely. You better believe I’d be keeping those!).

The laminate vanity was in good shape, but the printed-on wood grain looked pretty bad in person. Nothing a bit of paint can’t fix! We had also been having issues with our old faucet for a while, so I jumped at the chance to try out Moen’s new Hamden faucet. Finally, we wanted to replace the medicine cabinet and add some vintage style decor to the space.

Here’s what that dingy old bathroom looks like after just two days!

How to Complete a Farmhouse Style
Bathroom Makeover in One Weekend

Luckily, there isn’t much we needed to do with the tub, so this farmhouse style bathroom makeover mainly consisted of just a few parts: giving the old vanity a makeover, replacing the tile, upgrading the hardware, and adding vintage style decor.

Step 1: Revive an old laminate vanity

We began by removing the vanity so it could be painted. Painting laminate sounds tricky, but really all you need is a good primer. I cleaned the vanity with TSP substitute and then applied two coats of Zinsser primer. I love this primer because you don’t need to sand first, and it covers nearly any kind of surface (including slick laminate!).

Here’s a quick progress shot after I applied the first coat of primer (and before we installed our pretty new faucet):

After two coats of Zinsser primer, I applied two coats of Benjamin Moore’s Opal Essence. A $6 sample can was more than enough for this project. I’m absolutely smitten with this adorable shade of mint! It’s a bit more saturated in real life than it came out in the photos, and I love it so much that I’m planning to use it in a few other places in our home.

We also replaced the metal knob with a leftover glass knob we had on hand from another project.

Step 2: Refresh the walls with DIY shiplap

There are already dozens of helpful and thorough shiplap tutorials out there, but here’s the gist of this super easy DIY:

• Purchase 4×8 sheets of 1/4 inch plywood and rip them down into 6 inch wide strips. Tip: Save time on sanding by making sure the face of the plywood is already pretty smooth. We messed up here and had to sand the boards to get rid of all the rough spots.
• Prime and paint your boards. In a moist environment like a bathroom, it’s a good idea to prime both sides of your boards. Some people paint their boards after installation, but we painted ours prior to attaching them to the wall. We ended up applying two coats of primer and two coats of Sherwin Williams Pearly White.
• Apply your boards to the wall. Start at the top and work your way down. Because our walls are uneven, my husband measured and cut each individual board before installing them to the wall. We used nickels between the boards to ensure even spacing. Using a nail gun to attach the boards to the studs is the recommended method, but we simply used a few tubes of heavy duty liquid nails. My handy husband was pretty confident in this method, so time will tell if we experience any issues.
• Finish off with trim pieces. We used a coved corner piece to hide the gaps where the walls met and a vinyl trim piece where the shiplap meets the shower. You can’t see this piece in the photos, but it will help protect the ends of the boards from any overspray from the shower.

The other side of the room is a wall to wall storage cabinet, so we were able to shiplap this room with just two 4×8 sheets of plywood. The total cost for this DIY shiplap project (including primer, paint, liquid nails, and trim pieces) was about $105.

Step 3: Add beautiful & functional hardware

This beautiful faucet is Moen’s new Hamden Spot Resist Brushed Nickel Two-Handle High Arc Bathroom Faucet. We had been having problems with our old faucet, so I was really excited when Moen asked me to try out this new model. I honestly just thought it would be a pretty but average faucet, but I’ve actually been super impressed with this little beauty!

My absolute favorite thing about this faucet? The spot resist finish! Our old faucet was spotty again just hours after cleaning it, but this finish stays blemish free. It’s like freaking magic.

Another reason it’s a million times easier to keep clean than our old faucet? No lift rod in the back! That rod made it so hard to clean behind our old faucet, and how often do you actually use it anyway? Instead of pulling up on a lift rod to engage the stopper, all you have to do is push down on the stopper itself. Whoever invented that feature is an absolute genius. I love our new faucet and can’t recommend it enough.

Step 4: Add vintage style decor

Nothing adds character and charm to a room like vintage style decor. I love unique items that tell a story or could have even been in our home 100 years ago. I found this vintage barber shop ad on eBay and paired it with a vintage frame from a local antique shop. The antique comb basket was an Etsy find, but I saw quite a few on eBay as well. It holds small jars we use to store small items like cotton balls and cotton swabs.

The enamel soap dish and green wall pocket both came from Craft House Designs. You can’t beat beautiful decor that also serves a functional purpose! Even if you’re not a big user of bar soap, one of these soap dishes could hold some of your everyday makeup or a contact lens case. We’ll use the green wall pocket to hold everyday items like toothpaste, hair products, and makeup.

Finding a budget mirror was no easy task, but I finally stumbled on this beautiful rope mirror from Kirkland’s for a steal! It adds the perfect amount of modern to the space. We ended up shortening the rope and hanging it from picture wire for extra support. We anchored 3/4 inch plywood into the wall cavity left behind by the medicine cabinet, so this baby is extra secure!

Overall, I’m thrilled with how easy this room was to do, and I’m so happy I don’t have to look at dingy, falling apart tile anymore! *happy dance*

Just getting rid of the dingy square tiles will make a huge difference in this room. The vanity can stay (for now), but the fake printed-on wood grain looks pretty terrible up close. I’d love to paint it a mint or green color like this beautiful green vanity. Our wish list also includes a new mirror (goodbye broken medicine cabinet!), an antique style soap dish, and a few pieces of farmhouse style organizational decor. I especially love this galvanized divided organizer and this rustic green wall pocket.

Since we no longer have a medicine cabinet, this adorable green wall pocket will hold some of our most used products such as makeup, hair gel, and toothpaste. It’s so handy, and it’d be a great addition to a kitchen or entryway as well.
And I’m pretty sure our new mint enamel soap dish is officially the most adorable thing in our house (excluding our furballs of course). Even if you’re not a big user of bar soap, one of these soap dishes could hold some of your everyday makeup or a contact lens case. It would also make a perfect sponge holder above the kitchen sink. I even had someone comment on Instagram that they have one in their entryway to store their keys. I’m sure there are tons of other creative uses and at under $10, it’s definitely hard to pass up!

Vintage & Farmhouse Style Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans get a lot of hate in the design world, but I’d love to have any of these in my house! And even if you still really hate the look of blades, there are options that don’t even look like fans like this chandelier fixture and this funky globe fixture. Ceiling fans are a must in our home, especially the bedrooms. They’re one of the reasons we don’t need to use AC at all! Using Fans to Stay Cool

You’re probably skeptical about my claim that we don’t use AC in our house, but I promise it’s true! It actually still stays cool even when it’s in the 90s outside all summer. A lot of it has to do with our trees and how our house was built (high ceilings and lots of windows), but fans help a ton. Here are a few tips, but please be sure to read this post for more: 10 Ways to Keep Your Home Cool Without AC.

• Keep windows, blinds & curtains closed during the day. Use black-out curtains or UV-blocking film to keep out unwanted heat.
• When the sun goes down, open your windows to let the cooler night air blow in.
• Put fans in your bedroom window at night to bring in the cooler outside air. We put a floor fan in front of our bedroom window, but you can also set a box fan right into the window.
• Make sure ceiling fans are set to counter clockwise. This will help distribute air down and throughout the room.
• To add a chill to the air, place a bowl of ice in front of a fan. The ice cools the air and the fan helps circulate that cooler air around the room.
