In an effort to continue our discussions on Teaching as we Learn, Tom has enthusiastically agreed to discuss his experience before, during, and after the stroke.

Of course this is a very sensitive topic for Tom (and myself) as it was a frightening experience, and one that has altered him in many ways. We both feel the need to share this experience in an effort to support what we are doing on HelpMeCope.TV and to hopefully help others who are going through what we referred to in our earlier broadcast topic…. ” When Transformation Becomes a Crisis”.

Unbelievably, Tom will be doing the computer work, editing, and posting of this incredible conversation. The Audio Post will be up as soon as he can edit and process the recording, as he insists on positive recovery using the tools he knows.

We feel this must be a very important topic indeed. As the synchronicity of this event is astounding, and Tom has always maintained an amazing sense of humor…

Note from Tom: for those of you who aren’t familiar with just how warped I am, here is the song that keeps running through my mind for the last 2 days: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLHc-yIAPbg

Our next several conversations will generally be on the topic of “When Transformation becomes a ‘Spiritual Crisis’”. In addition to the recorded discussions we will be posing some articles as collateral information, the first of which is below.

Please feel free to add your comments and questions to these articles as we may use them in our discussions.

INTRODUCTION

“Life is full of challenges.” How many times have you heard that statement? If you are over the age of 2 you have met, and (hopefully) moved through many of life’s challenges. For some, those challenges were difficult and stressful, for others change comes and goes without any degree of effort or complication at all. Nonetheless our lives are rich with diversity and advancement.

Changes and shifts are constant in the universe. “The sum of all scientific exploration is the observance and notation of changes within the container of the experiment or that, which is being observed”. We are watching our universe grow and expand. We are a part of our universe, so we are growing and expanding right along with it. What causes that growth is movement and friction and this is where we perceive growth to be uncomfortable.

In 1961 a scientist by the name of Ilya Prigogine theorized through the study of our universe and the stars within it, that friction and subatomic movement was what caused planets to be born. Here he is quoted by a man named Buckminster Fuller (a genius in the field of personal growth and transformation among other things) to explain the need for pressure in growth.

“Recently, an acquaintance of mine who has been searching for many years for a sense of direction and purpose revealed that he was waiting for that “unshakable vision”. I immediately thought of the work by a Belgian physicist named Ilya Prigogine who was awarded the Nobel Prize for his theory of “Dissipative Structures”, part of which he contends that friction is a fundamental property of nature and nothing grows without it-not mountains, not pearls, not stars, not people.

It is precisely the quality of fragility, he says, the capacity for being “shaken up” that is paradoxically the key to growth. Any structure- whether at a molecular, chemical, physical, social, or psychological level – that is insolated from disturbance is also protected from change. It becomes stagnant. Any vision- or any thing- that is true to life, true to the imperatives of creation and evolution, will NOT be unshakable.

We must therefore be willing to be shaken up, to submit ourselves to the dark underbelly of chaos, in order to reap the blessings of growth. Much of this is self-evident: Stress often prompts breakthroughs, crisis’s point toward opportunities, and chaos is an integral phase of the creative process.

The whole science of immunization is based on this wisdom;

We introduce a little bit of chaos in order to prevent a lot of chaos. Just enough, but not too much.“

We shake up the system for the sake of helping it evolve and become stronger.

It is sometimes hard to watch our friends or family members go through difficult changes. It is even harder to be the one change is happening to. The accompanying stresses that are symptomatic of what change brings on, seems to be the focal point of those involved. We do not often focus on development being ‘good for us” as much as we focus on how much it hurts, or how painful it is.

“Why did this have to happen?” we ask ourselves. “Why did it have to be like this, or that!” ALL of us have asked these questions at one time or another during the process of a change, but most of us refuse to wait for the answer. There are some who plow forward through life moving from one challenge to the next, devouring their journeys with great intensity, some caught in a kind of paradox between rapid change, and agonizing boredom and loneliness. And there are others who seem to be at peace with whatever comes their way. We each experience development and change with varying approaches, but we all eventually ask the question “why” in an effort to learn from the challenge. It is the “why” that can catch us, and turn innocent curiosity about learning into mind numbing emotional pain or isolating loneliness, causing natural growth to become a living nightmare.

As a result, most of us have begun to resent change, categorizing transformation into a nervous breakdown or an extremely negative experience. We have taught ourselves to brag to our friends that we are content and comfortable with our lives, leading them to believe we have completed our journey and have won the “war” on change before they have.

Fearing the pain of change, we lock ourselves into routine and call it contentment, making sure to control every possible scenario or aspect of a relationship that is not comfortable. We develop habits specifically to avoid the difficulties associated with change. We fear that which we do not understand, and then try to enforce structures and laws to protect or control the changes that must occur in order to understand life. Fear of the pain of change has caused much of this planets destruction, and left us humans with very little room to enjoy observing natural diversity in ourselves or in nature.

It is an insane process of mental projections collected over years of perceived negative experiences with change, that justify the need to stay safe from the pain of transformation.

Imagine for a moment that you are at the beach. You have packed everything you can for a nice day of sun and surf. You find the nicest cove or isolated section of the beach, away from everybody on the strip, and set up shop. You have a cooler full of cold drinks, a couple of towels, your beach chair, even a radio or CD player…you are ready to relax.

You’re lying there soaking up the sun and peace when all of the sudden you notice the tide coming in. It is rising unusually fast and coming right towards you. The serge takes you by surprise. You had only just begun to relax and gotten comfortable with all of your stuff around you. You panic at the sight of the tidal serge and rush to grab all of your “stuff”… But the serge moves faster and you watch as everything you brought with you floats out to sea. You are standing waist high is water, panicking and cursing. You may say to yourself, “Oh my god I almost died, and why!” you attempt to wade your way out of the water and back to your car. Having resigned yourself to the conclusion, “fun = disappointment”, or even worse…possible death and drowning, you have missed the point entirely. Change is inevitable and evolution demands changes and adjustments. Painful or not we will evolve.

The following chapters in this book are dedicated to the explanation of Transformation and the “side effects” of transition and development. It is the intention of the Authors of this book to ease the perceived negative effects of Transformational change with information that has been gathered over 20 years of case study with clients in sessions and with the authors own personal journeys.

As co-journeyers of Transformation into a new conscious world, we will take this adventure together, and walk the “Razor’s Edge” with the awareness that it’s ALL good for us.

Excerpt taken from “The Razor’s Edge” by Caroline Nightbird

Hello and Welcome to our first conversation. We are giving this one the title of:

Passive Dissipation

Some of you may know who we are, but for those of you who do not, my name is Oshi, aka, Caroline Nightbird, and that wonderful “other” voice, is my long time friend and (Spiritual Brother) Tom Kellen.

The two of us have grown older (and just a hair wiser) thru our lives and lessons. On a whim…. we both decided to record our conversations with each other for the sole purpose of listening a little deeper to what we were saying.

The idea came to us to “share” some of what we were discussing with you…not so you could hear how “brilliant” we were, but to allow you (the listener) to realize you are not alone in your struggles.

So here we go… Listen in on our talk. In it, you will hear our concerns and realizations about things like:

Anger, Depression, and Fear

Mastery… and what it means to be intuitive

Steps and stages for controlling negative emotions

The feeling of never being enough or having enough

And curiosity being the driving force behind Presence

We hope you will enjoy it as much as we did. Feel free to leave us your comments and questions, as we will need good topics to discuss in the future.

There will be many more talks to come, and if you leave a question, we will try to discuss it to your highest benefit and ours.

Also, you will hear in each conversation, references to books, web sites, and helpful links, which will be listed within each post for your convenience.

James Arthur Ray reminds us: “Everything has a gestation period, a time period that must pass before things will come into form. If you plant a carrot seed, it takes about seven weeks for the sprout to make its above-dirt entrance. Bamboo, which can grow up to thirteen feet in as little as one week, takes up to seven years to break through the surface of the ground. But for seven long years it looks like absolutely nothing’s happening. Now that takes some commitment.”

It feels as though the bamboo shoot is beginning to break the surface as we begin to bring this site together. Come along with us as we grow, learn, discuss, discover and laugh. The journey has just begun!
