Everyone has their own must have list of iPhone Apps. Here’s mine. What’s yours?

Communication:

1. BeeJive: (Based in San Francisco) This multi-client instant messenger isn’t free. At $9.99 it’s more than most (if not all?) other iPhone instant message clients …but it’s worth it. The reliable platform allows users to sync up on AOL, Yahoo!, Facebook and other popular instant message services. Features include, manage your buddy list, including add/remove, nicknames, groups, & blocking, set custom status messages, invisibility, set an auto-away status, and quick switch between multiple chats. Users can also call from chat and email chats.

What I love: look and feel, custom avatars for each IM service, ability to have multiple user accounts for each IM service.
Room for improvement: could use an option for on screen notification based on individual IM accounts.
Poor man’s alternative: eBuddy -not as reliable and does not have all of BeeJive’s features, but it also supports multiple IM clients and it’s free.

2. Twitterific Premium: Twitter client that allows multiple accounts, saved searches, local and trending topics. Twitterific has a slick interface with customizable font sizes and an easy to use toolbar for popular features such as retweeting, replies, etc. Clicking on a user’s author button also allows you to see both if you are following them and if they follow you on one screen.

What I love: easy switching between accounts, intuitive interface

Room for improvement: Sometimes the service is unable to connect. This could be either because of Twitterific or Twitter itself.

Poor Man’s alternative: Twitterific: a free, somewhat limited version of Twitterific Premium. If you have one Twitter account and are looking for a free client, this one is hard to beat.

Productivity

3. Evernote: (Based in MountainView) This free application allows users to record their thoughts in text, voice, or picture format. Information is auto synced to a web-based user account (again free, although there is a premium version for those who want tons of space -I’ve never felt the need to upgrade). Features include tagging, multiple folders, and an easy to use interface.

What I love: It’s free yet offers more features than some paid applications. Very easy and quick -great for notes on the run.

Room for improvement: Synching from computer to iPhone (when you begin your docs on your laptop versus your phone) could be smoother. More features for doc editing on the web version.

Poor Man’s alternative: This is the poor man’s alternative.

4. Lose it: Ever wonder just how many calories you consume each day? Some experts say that Americans underestimate their food intake by 30%. Whether you’re looking to achieve a certain goal weight or just want to stay on track, Lose It is a great too. The calorie counter / exercise journal features a database of foods (including calories, fat, carbs, protein numbers), and exercises (and how many calories you burn doing each). Users can view their progress by the day or by the week and past entries are saved.

What I love: ease of use, ability to make fine adjustments to food qualities, ability to enter your own foods.

Room for improvement: Would love to see charts showing counts of fat grams against goal (as it is, it counts fat grams but does not give you a recommended amount per day as it does with calories.

Poor man’s alternative: None! This app is free.

5. Camera Genius: One of many enhanced camera apps for iPhone, this one stands out for the number of features you get for a mere 99 cents. Features include camera zoom, sound capture, anti-shake, a timer and guides for lining up shots.

What I love: the “big button” feature -especially useful when you’re turning the camera on yourself and can’t “see” the button.

Room for improvement: The lag time when using anti-shake can be annoying.

Poor man’s alternative: If you are just taking quick photos on the fly, use iPhone’s built in camera feature. No zoom, timer, etc., but if you don’t need it and really don’t want to spend the buck, the built in app isn’t bad.

Fun and passing time

6. Police radio: This app allows users to listen in to police radio from precincts all over the country. Included are big city forces like the LAPD, Oakland Police and NYPD. Small cities are represented as well, however, and I was pleased to find both my home town of Troy, NY, and current city, Campbell, CA. Some reviews on iPhone caution that you “never hear the good stuff”, but the first night I listened in I heard, “Man threatening to kill his girlfriend…” along with a slew of police code, helpfully translated on the app’s screen.

What I love: huge number of cities covered, easy to navigate, surprisingly clear reception, low price tag of 99 cents.

Room for improvement: Sometimes the app can take a few seconds to connect to the police feeds, so the first time one uses the app, it seems like there is no activity or the app is not connecting. I have a feeling this is more to do with what it takes to grab the feed versus any fault of the application.

Poor man’s alternative: Although not on iPhone or easy to grab, many local feeds are available on the web. A simple Google search will likely bring you to the web-based feed for your city.

7. Dexter: Any fan of the show is likely to enjoy this game, which follows vigilante, serial killing, Dexter on his adventures. This app is not kid friendly (nor is the TV show and book series it is based on), but for adult fans, it’s a fun time waster. The graphs are incredible and the game takes full advantage of iPhone’s unique features (sometimes in gruesome ways…such as in how Dexter “takes care” of his victims). This game is not for everyone, but for show fans, I recommend it highly.

What I love: great performance from actors in voice over, effects, story line.

Room for improvement: None.

Poor man’s version: There are no other Dexter games, but free, non violent games are plentiful and easy to find on the iPhone app store.

The company, founded in 2007 by two ex-eBay employees, has been operating with simple mission: provide a platform where people can share common experiences and offer support, advice, and an ear to others. Until now, Tokoni has been almost exclusively focused on individual, and not business, communities.

The initial inspiration for the site came to co-founder Mary Lou Song when she was taking a class, “I was taking a writing course, one of those where we were reading others work, and I just loved all of the stories from my fellow students. I felt like what a shame that these might get tucked away somewhere and not see the light of day. As writers we all aspire to be published someday, but it doesn’t happen for everyone. I thought there should be a place for those stories.”

Song was also a new mom and thought it important that parents have a place to share their unique challenges and life occurrences, be it mothers struggling for work-life balance, handling tantrums, or more serious subjects such as childhood illness, a struggle her brother knew personally.

“My brother and his wife were struggling with their newborn son who is allergic to everything and has a heart condition. They wanted to find people with similar experiences so that they could see what lies ahead for them. It’s different from getting medical advice from doctors. They wanted to know what its like to live with his particular heart condition.”

So, the question was, “How do we find people who have the same sort of life experiences that we have?”

Enter Tokoni.com, an ad free no-cost site where users can set up communities to discuss everything from gardening tips to erotic literature (seen only if filters are turned off).

The tenor of conversation in Tonoki communities has mirrored that of Americans (the site communities are still mostly based in the USA) in general. For example, although a site might be devoted to stay-at-home moms, those women might find themselves veering into discussions about relationships, economic hard times, and politics.

Politics, in particular, has been on the minds of many Tokoni members, so it is not surprising that when Meg Whitman looked to build an interactive community for her gubernatorial campaign, she turned to her fellow ex-eBay colleagues.

Song explains, “If you look at Meg Whitman as a brand it makes sense. What makes politics so great is talking about life stories and the impact. She was excited about her site and letting Californians talk about their lives.”

Thus far, Tokoni has been successful in avoiding the flame-throwing bouts that can drag conversations off track and into the murky world of online insults and bickering.

“That’s one of the ground rules we had in the Tokoni community,” said Song. “There is room for all different kinds of perspectives and we’re trying to keep it civil. We say it in our terms of service and put it in our participation guidelines. We have community manager who gets in to conversations and if it gets out of hand we remind each other, let’s be kind and let’s mind our manners.”

Now, the company is set to take the next step and offer white-labeled sites (or hubs) where people can share their stories about/experience with brands, companies, and organizations. Tokoni has already had some success in this area as the architect of eBay’s online community.

The company is launching Tokoni Community Platform, a branded community offering targeted toward companies and organizations. The platform enables brands to build custom community sites that can be used to build brand loyalty through shared customer stories and an interactive dialogue between company and customer.

One can imagine such sites including posts on product customizations, DIY projects, funny anecdotes, and advice. Considering the popularity of user group organizations, fan sites, and viral videos featuring brands, this appears to be a natural market for the story sharing community.

According to a statement issued by the company, “Tokoni’s platform is a complete management solution for turning social media conversations into customer insight, offering a way to optimize consumer stories and experiences to drive business and brand objectives. The resulting interactive communities provide clients and marketers with a brand-building tool that helps them truly leverage the collective voice of users to improve customer experiences and drive word of mouth on the Web. In addition, feedback and contributions can be used to inform and improve product development and marketing efforts.”

Companies and individuals can create dedicated hubs on Tokoni.com. Users can also create branded websites that, “feature stories from the company and its audiences; connect customers with various social media such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube; and help companies mine customer feedback and stories to increase reach, improve customer experiences and inform product development.”

Happily for users, while companies, such as Twitter, are changing their terms of service to open the door for advertising, according to Mary Lou Song, Tokoni will remain ad free.

“We believe that your story page should belong to you and we do not believe that it should be cluttered by advertising. We want people to feel like their stories belong to them.”

Just today, there were stories on the news about H1N1 Virus outbreaks at colleges during the first week of classes. One school even set up a ‘quarantine dorm’. Tales like this can feed fear, talk, and misinformation. Those wanting to know what’s really happening, should check out an influenza research sharing site recently announced by Google.

PLoS Currents (Public Library of Science), has launched a new social-site for scientists to quickly share research and findings on topics such as flu outbreaks in a faster, yet still well vetted, way than formal publication. The research and site will be hosted by Google Knol.

Harold Varmus, chairman of the Public Library of Science posted on the Google Blog,

“The successful development of open access publishing by organizations including the Public Library of Science (PLoS) in recent years is a dramatic illustration of how the Internet is revolutionizing scientific communication. Today, after several months of work, I’m delighted to announce that PLoS is launching PLoS Currents (Beta) — a new and experimental website for the rapid communication of research results and ideas. In response to the recent worldwide H1N1 influenza outbreak, the first PLoS Currents research theme is influenza.”

Today, Google announced the iGoogle Showcase (http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/help/ig/showcase/). Users familiar with iGoogle know it’s a free service allowing one to share content on a personal home page, which can be shared with Google’s millions of users. In creating its Showcase, Google reached out to entertainment celebrities, political figures, academics, and other thought leaders and asked them to share content on their personal homepages.

According to Google, “Users can now either add their favorite celebrity’s entire iGoogle page or look through the collection and choose different gadgets and themes from many celebrity pages. iGoogle lets users personalize their homepage the way they want it with the things that are important to them.”

A list of participating celebrities is available on the iGoogle Showcase main site at (http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/help/ig/showcase/).

A blog post of the announcement is posted by Google here: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/06/tour-homepages-of-your-favorite.html with an accompaning YouTube video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAEXRq9wlhY

Personally, while I’d love to get my hands (ears) on an early release of the next Wyclef Jean download, I couldn’t really care less about which sites he likes to surf on the web. How do you feel? Comment with your opinion.

Today, San Francisco based BuzzLogic launched its Conversational Advertising Dashboard - an easy to use tool designed to make media buying simple across a complex social media landscape. With ad budgets shrinking and the demand for quick, provable results higher than ever, advertisers are under the gun to get the most bang for their meager budgets. Add to this, the reality that both agencies and corporate marketing departments are laying off staff, and you have fewer resources working in pressure-cooker environments to produce quality ad content for a marketplace -microblogs, forums, and other venues where real time conversations happen- that is still not well understood.

As any account manager will tell you, the first question at the end of a campaign is not, “What did people think of the ad?”, it’s “Did the ad meet its target?”. And then the follow up questions…how many people clicked on it? …where did those clicks come from? …what were those people discussing? us? our competition? …did they already know our products? …and so on.

In other words, “Did the ad perform well, and can you prove it?”

BuzzLogic’s Conversational Advertising Dashboard for brands and agencies allows you to answer these questions with provable data that is not only easy to gather, but highly transparent and measurable for the client. This sort of data gathering and targeting is BuzzLogic’s specialty and part of what makes them successful with clients ranging from 360i to OmnicomMediaGroup, both of whom participated in, along with other customers, in an early beta of the dashboard. The platform is available in wide beta as of today.

According to the company, “BuzzLogic’s Conversational Advertising Dashboard gives advertising buyers and planners the tools they need to more effectively target and communicate messages to customer audiences and influence purchase decisions. Visual and metrics-driven insights provide full campaign transparency, showing which publishers are running the ads and the exact content in which the ads are placed. The tool also enables marketers to quickly scan historical posts by publisher and assess conversational tones. Additionally, a conversation social graph illustrates the sites that are contributing to and extending the conversational thread out to further engaged audiences. As a result, advertising messages and creative can be tailored to reflect the specific content of targeted conversations, driving more relevant, effective campaigns and, ultimately, deeper audience engagement and better ROI.”

“Brands want to be where customers are most engaged online and increasingly that’s within conversational media,” said John Donahue, global director of business intelligence analytics, OmnicomMediaGroup. “But, before advertisers can realize the promise of this platform, we need the insight, transparency and control that has been lacking thus far. BuzzLogic’s Conversational Advertising Dashboard is the only tool I’ve seen that makes it easy to understand online conversations as they relate to advertising performance, enabling us to increase the efficacy of campaigns and justify the spend.”

Courtney Hughes, VP Strategic Sales, BuzzLogic took me through a demonstration, based on real customer data, and all I can say is I wish I had a tool like this back in my agency days!

Conversational Advertising Dashboard features include:

Transparency: Visual and metrics-driven insights provide full campaign transparency, showing which publishers are running the ads and the exact content of conversations in where ads are being placed.

Social Intelligence: Conversation social graph provides a roadmap to understand the topics being discussed, the size of the conversation, and the publishers connecting around certain topics.

Performance Insights: Performance data available on a per-conversation basis, allowing advertisers to determine creative performance.

Campaign Control: Advertisers have complete control around where ads are placed, and can easily select sites for review and potential removal from campaigns.

Deeper Metrics: In addition to traditional campaign reporting on impressions and clicks, the Dashboard provides metrics within each conversation being targeted, including the IAB social media metrics, measuring conversation size, site relevance, author credibility and content freshness.

To use an example, let’s say your company has ads running on a particular blog and during the time your ad is running, the blog conversations are centered primarily around your company. You might find that those ads have a low click through rate because participants in that blog’s conversations are already expert on your company’s offerings and/or are existing customers. So, while at first blush, a you might think of pulling your ad from that site, the agency could argue that this captive audience of existing users might be a perfect target for up-sell ads or new beta announcements, etc. Clients might also see other surprising results, such as very high click through rates for their ads on sites where their competitors are the subject of discussion, as we saw in the demonstration I was given.
At the end of the day, anything that allows one to prove the value of their service whilst providing a real path to increased sales, especially in something as murky as online advertising -in the even more murky social conversational landscape- is worth its weight in virtual gold in my book. Very impressive.

This is very cool and something we’re likely to see more of. High tech publication, The Register, has recently started offering a series of free webcasts on its website, theregister.co.uk. While webcasts are nothing new, tech sites post things like gadget reviews all the time, what sets this series apart is the content.

Yesterday, The Register had this post,

This is the first in a series of webcasts featuring interesting (or deadly dull) conversations about industry news and trends. These webcasts are hosted by Dan Olds, the principal analyst for Gabriel Consulting Group, a boutique IT industry analyst firm located in the US. Dan is a reasonably smart guy, has been around the industry for quite a while, and, more importantly, seems to have a viewpoint and attitude that fits in well around here.

These webcasts will come in two flavours: the first is a chat session with an industry expert about some interesting topic or trend. In other webcasts, we will spotlight an IT vendor and give their products and strategies a good looking over. These webcasts will be different from the normal run of the mill vendor infomercial. We’re looking to do a webcast that has a lot more meat (at least 30 per cent more) and asks meaningful questions – the types of questions (hopefully) that you yourself would ask…only we won’t use as many obscenities.

The program below is a “Analyst Roundtable” chat with Jonathan Eunice from technology analyst firm Illuminata.

In this 30-minute webcast, Dan and Jonathan discuss Cloud computing - past, present and future. So give it a listen (and check out the slides too) and let us know what you think….

Now, what some readers might not know, but high-tech folks will pick up on immediately, is that sessions with IT analysts can cost thousands of dollars a pop. Even a webcast, delivered to your company can easily run over a thousand dollars, so The Register is definitely breaking new ground offering the content for free. One wonders if this is going to be a new trend as the media compete for readers in a competitive, hard it, economy.

Twitter users are receiving direct messages (DMs) saying, “hey! check out this funny blog about you…” along with a link to blogspot.com. This simply a ploy to get information -in this case your Twitter user name and password. There is no funny blog about you.

Twitter users who receive the messages, either on their Twitter page or on their mobile device, are directed to click on the bogus link and when they do, they see a screen that looks like the Twitter site, but is actually a fake (see screen shot below -courtesy of The Twitter Blog). The phishing site url is twitter.access-logins.com (Note that the domain name before .com is access-logins and not twitter).

Once the user name and password are entered, the phishing program is able to access the user’s account and send the same phony message to all of users on the victim’s friend list. In this way, the scheme is very similar to the Facebook wall post phishing scam that went around over Christmas. In that version, users were told their photos had been posted to sites with names including floatclick.com, bakespoil.com, and wagfloat.com.

Twitter users have been vocal in sharing information and warning others about the attack. Check out #phishing to read and join the latest discussion.

The same advice given for the Facebook scheme applies here,

Never click on any unknown link, even if sent from a friend.

Specifically, if you want to visit Twitter, do not click on a link to the site. Open a window or tab in your browser and type in the url.

Always double check the url on the top of the page you are browsing and make sure it is the real domain (for example, ebay.com and not your-ebay-account.com).

Click for details from the official Twitter blog

Today Microsoft keeps personally identifiable information (a user’s IP address) for 18 months. Yahoo destroys this information after 90 days and Google keeps an IP address for nine months. After that time some companies will delete the whole address while other companies will delete the last two digits only. Even this is a point of controversy as the preceding digits can still tell a lot about a users location much like the first few digits of a phone number such as the area code.

AOL stalker is a private website that was set up in 2006, when the AOL search data was leaked. That data did not come attached with names, however the user numbers are listed. The site allowed visitors to type in either a user number or search term and see the results which were at times funny, strange, or tragic -searches that describe pregnancies that may or may not have resulted in birth, cancer scares, and bizarre searches around murders and crime scenes.

Today users can see the 2006 results or up to the minute results that show IP addresses minus the last two digits.

Cracked.com - Cracked.com is one of those wonderful websites that serves absolutely no useful purpose but will keep you occupied for hours. Where else can you find artciles with titles like “9 Awesome Places to Have Sex (And the Horrific Consequences)”?

419eater.com - Unless you have managed to avoid getting an email account, you have likely received a message at one time that promised a large inheritance, said you won the lottery, or offered money for cashing checks. Perhaps you received a strange email that looked something like this:

I am Mrs. Rose Nkama. I was married to late Mr.Nkama,The CEO Veekrol Link Ltd London United Kingdom, a seasoned contractor in England. Before he died in the year 2006. We were married for eleven years without a child. He died after a brief illness. When my husband was alive,he deposited EUR 4.3 EURO with a security company…

Most of these scams fall under the broad umbrella known as advance-fee fraud or “419 scams” -so named because 419 is the code for fraud under Nigeran law and many of these scams once originated in Nigeria. Today they are in place all over the world including Russia, Vietnam, the UK, and the United States, and some of the first advance fee fraud scams started in Spain and were known as Spanish Prisoner scams.

419Eater is a site devoted to turning the table on the scam artists. Site members answer these emails and “bait” the scammers by pretending to be victims, often adopting funny character names such as “Luke Skywalker” or “Captain Morgan” with surprisingly funny results. It’s easy to loose hours of time reading this correspondence, browsing scam artist photos and watching videos.

In most cases, users will see these messages as “posts” from trusted friends on their Facebook profile pages. Accustomed to trusting their friends and worried about having their photos posted on strange websites, people copy and paste the website link into their browsers, which is when the trouble begins.

This is the latest address-book scam to hit Facebook and it works like a classic phishing scheme. Users receive a message from a trusted friend:

“Did you upload your images at floatclick-com-have you seen it.”

Trusting their friend, the user copies the link into their browser (the links in the Facebook “wall post” are not clickable themselves).

Once the user enters the link, they are brought to a site that will bring up pop-up ads and ask for information including including the user’s email and their friend’s email under the guise of needing this info to show the user their pictures.

This is where the phishing begins. Through any of a number of techniques, the user is “tricked” into providing the site with enough information so that it may access the user’s Facebook account and friend list.

Once this happens, the user’s account is used to send these same messages to all of their friends and the cycle begins again.

Here is a screen shot from a friend’s Facebook account which was hit by this scheme. Over the course of 24 hours, his account sent hundreds of messages to his friends about phony photos. The screen shot below shows a five minute period:

The domains mentioned in the messages are registered to “Victoria David,” which may be a fake name, and appear to have been registered within the last week.

Most phishing schemes are technically simple and rely on trickery to get information such as user names, email and passwords. They are surprisingly effective, sometimes more so than more advanced hacks and viruses. For example, although most of the contacts on my friend’s Facebook list are very technically savvy people with the latest anti-virus software, several willingly went to the phishing sites and gave up their personal information despite the fact that, 1. the posts were grammatically incorrect and our friend is a writer, and 2. they had never posted their messages to any of the listed websites. They visited the sites simply because it didn’t enter their minds that a friend would send them to a scam site -and of course he didn’t, but the phishing scheme that hijacked his Facebook account did.

The same common sense approach that one uses in email -never click on or visit an unknown link, even from a friend- applies here. Most people on my friend’s list did the right thing, which was to either ask him if the message was really from him or, knowing that it couldn’t be, they simply deleted it so that no one else seeing their Facebook wall would read it and get taken in.

Update Dec 29 - Here are some of the names of sites being used in this scheme: hiderush.com, bakespoil.com, floatclick.com, wagfloat.com, climbfloat.com, swimstroll.com, boastsing.com, spoilsail.com, mixclang.com, blinksnap.com, poachbang.com, cutboast.com, stuffrattle.com, wrestlegrowl.com, screechclimb.com, laughrattle.com, blendgrowl.com, stuffcrush.com, blinksnap.com

Often times these links are shown as nonclickable (eg hiderush - com, floatclick - com, bakespoil - com, wagfloat-com, etc.)

Some examples of posts are:

“I heard your profile pictures are on boastsing-com-take a look”
“since when have your pics been up on spoilsail-com-check it out.”
“your pics are on mixclang-com-check it out.”
“Has anyone told you there’s a website showing your pictures its laughrattle-com-check it out”
“did your see that cool site with your pictures on it wrestlegrowl-com-you gotta see it.”
