Spring days in Boston are rare, but my god are they wonderful. We've had some beautiful days over the past week or so, and the sight of cherry blossoms throughout the city have made my heart feel so full. There's something so amazing about seeing the city open up after an especially long and harsh winter.

A few weeks ago I went up to the Skywalk Observatory at the Prudential Center for an assignment for my photography class, and my goodness the views were amazing. You can look out at the city from all directions, seeing for miles. I loved getting to see all of the places that have been the setting for such a large part of my life over these past five years in Boston.

A little while back, I shared some pictures from Margam Castle in Wales. Nearby on the grounds you can find Margam Abbey and some insanely beautiful ruins from the 13th century. Isn't it just gorgeous? I could have spent hours wandering around.

I'm taking a global film and culture class this semester. Recently, we've been studying the French New Wave cinema, with a focus on Jean-Luc Godard and Brigitte Bardot. Contempt (Le Mépris) is a beautiful film about a woman falling out of love with her screenwriter husband as he is writing an adaptation of The Odessey. If you're looking for a happy ending, this isn't the film for you--but don't you just love Brigitte Bardot's timeless style?

A couple of weeks ago, I spent a few hours wandering around Newburyport, a small coastal town about half an hour north of Boston. Newburyport is one of those perfect little New England towns and a great little afternoon escape.

Oldie's Marketplace is an indoor / outdoor market where you can find all sorts of treasures. The market was closed, but I loved looking around outside.

It always warms my heart a little to see independent record stores.

We stopped in at Ceia Kitchen + Bar to grab a drink and warm up a little. Although we had dinner plans later that night, we couldn't resist trying the seriously amazing braised pumpkin gnocchi with black truffle and chestnuts. We can't wait to go back for a date night.

I've felt like I've been in a little bit of a creative rut lately, so the other day I just spent a few hours playing around making some collages in PhotoShop using some of my Instagram snaps and some vintage black and white images. I've always been drawn to their timeless and intimate glamour. Sometimes it's just fun to try out something new, you know?

I absolutely fell in love with the Brickyard Cottage in Wimbledon when I was in England last summer. From the weathered sign on the gate, to the union jack, to the delicate pink rose blooms, the cottage was filled with sweet little details and felt so quintessentially British I just couldn't get enough. I was in England for the Jubilee, and this sweet little cottage nestled in between two buildings felt perfectly cozy and festive. Can't you just imagine snuggling up inside with a warm mug of tea and your Jane Austen novel of choice? Sigh. [ Also, I'm realizing that 99% of my daydreams involve curling up with a good book. Living wild and crazy over here. ]

A FRESH START.

Well, hello there! I can't quite believe it, but it's been over two months since my last post. Two months! And honestly, I haven't been able to keep up a regular posting schedule since I got back from my trip to Europe last summer. For the past six months, I've been on co-op [ basically an internship on steroids ] at a great company, but it took up a lot of my focus and energy. I had an hour and a half commute each way, so by the time I finally made it back home I was exhausted and feeling creatively drained. I do try to put a lot of effort into my posts, so I never wanted to just post for the sake of posting. That's just not worth the time for me -- and it's especially not worth your time, dear readers. [ I loved reading {AV}'s thoughts on the subject over at Long Distance Loving -- it's nice to know I'm not alone! ] So eventually, the days of putting off blogging until I felt I had something worthwhile to share turned into weeks and then months..and now here we are.

When I first started Hemenway Street back in 2010, it was to find a much-needed creative outlet, a place where I could learn and grow beyond my business classes. I want to get back to that place of exploration and discovery. This semester is the last of my undergrad career, and for the first time in years I'm not also working or interning -- so I'm planning on enjoying every glorious second of free time ;) I'll be taking a photography class this semester and I can't wait to finally learn how to properly use my DSLR and spend more time on creative projects.

2013 will be bringing big changes for me: graduation, finding a grown up job, and moving out of my apartment on the street that share's this blog's name. This is the first time in my life that I don't have the next steps meticulously planned out, and it is terrifying -- but amazingly exciting.

While I've been cooped up inside, waiting out the howling winds of Hurricane Sandy, I can't help but let my mind wander back to sunnier days. When I was in France this past June, my sister and I kept coming across this sweet little shop with an irresistibly colorful window display. The shop sold the prettiest strings of lights -- you could choose from dozens of colors to create your own arrangement. It reminded me of those make-your-own jewelry I loved when I was young. Such a fun way to decorate, don't you think?

AN AFTERNOON AT MARGAM CASTLE.

Is anyone else going through serious Downton Abbey withdrawals? I can't believe we still have to wait until January. While I obviously love the drama that the show brings [ The Mary & Matthew wedding? Can't wait! ], I also love getting to see the beautiful Highclere Castle. When I was in Wales this summer, we spent a few hours at Margam Park wandering around the grounds and admiring Margam Castle. While it's not the castle of Downton fame, Margam Castle is just as gorgeous and has a similarly storied past.

During World War II, both British and American troops were housed at the castle. My Nana lives nearby, and during the war she would go to dances with the soldiers. She thought the Americans were terribly glamourous.

As I mentioned in this post, Margam Castle features some incredibly beautiful stone detailing. The castle was built in the early 1800s by the architect Thomas Hopper. I could spend hours looking at all of the different patterns and textures. There's something so compelling about weathered stone, don't you think?

I was immediately drawn to the wild yet manicured gardens. They really feel like they're from another time, don't you think? In 1881, the future King and Queen of England stopped by for a visit and planted a tree in the gardens in honor of the event.

Aren't the views just gorgeous? If you look closely in the third photo below, you can see the ruins of a small chapel -- Capel Mair ar y Bryn. Wales has beautiful ruins everywhere. I've been spending time in Wales my whole life, and sights like these never fail to take my breath away.

I'll be heading to Chicago in a few weeks and I realized that I never really shared any photos from my last trip there earlier in the summer. Can you believe we're already a week into October? This week's pairing is in celebration of two of my favorite things things about fall: reading books and changing leaves. The Snow White book cover is from 1900 and has certainly stood the test of time. Don't you just love vintage book covers? [ This is one of my favorite boards to pin to at the moment. ] Over the past few weeks I've loved seeing how the leaves have begun to change on my way work each day. It's certainly a good time to live in New England! :) This afternoon has become quite gloomy, so I plan on sitting by the fire and reading a book. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

This weekend, Hemenway Street got a makeover! I've been wanting to change up the site design for a while now, and so I was thrilled when I discovered Ana Degenaar's Blog Milk Shop. The shop offers beautiful pre-made template designs that are offered in limited editions, so you don't have to worry about seeing the same design everywhere. I'm sure I'll be making a few tweaks here and there as I get used to the new look, but I must say that I'm pretty excited to give Hemenway Street a fresh new feel.
