A patron recently asked one of our librarians which Black woman had won the most Grammy Awards. No surprise, it's Beyoncé with her 28 Grammys! But we were curious about other Grammy winners. Here's a list of some, but not all, of these wonderful artists. (Thanks to grammy.com for the info!)

Not yet, but Jennifer Hudson is close with an Academy Award (Oscar), a Golden Globe Award, a Daytime Emmy Award, two Grammy Awards, and several other prestigious awards; she is just missing the Tony!

One notable EGOT winner is Whoopi Goldberg, who completed the 4-award series in 2002. She has won a Tony for Best Musical (Thoroughly Modern Millie), Daytime Emmy for a documentary about Hattie McDaniel, an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Ghost, and a Grammy for Best Comedy Album: Whoopi Goldberg.

Pick an artist, pick any album, you can’t go wrong. Celebrate with music! You can instantly stream albums from many of these artists, plus tons more on hoopla. Just log in with your library card and start listening.

The Grammys will be hosted this April in Las Vegas(!), so watch and see if these numbers change.

Banned Books Week 2021

Join us in supporting the annual celebration of the freedom and right to read! Banned Books Week (held the last week of September) spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. As stated on the American Library Association's (ALA) website, Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship by focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books

As stated in Article III of the Library Bill of Rights, “Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment.”

Celebrate the life of the iconic actor, director, and musician Melvin Van Pebbles. Van Pebbles, famous for directing the low budget art house film 'Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song' in 1971, was toted as the Godfather of Black Cinema. Cats and Coffee : Loss of a loved one

In our last Cats & Coffee meeting, we talked about cat loss. It’s not an easy topic to discuss, but it’s important to recognize that we are not alone. There are many people coping with the loss of pets and share the same emotions of grief and loss. I would like to emphasize that a loss of pet not only means the passing of a pet, but also involves families that have lost a beloved pet and are not able to find or reunite with them.

We also discussed the role of the “Caregiver” and what it means to take care of a terminally ill cat. As a caregiver, we focus on and invest so much time on the needs of our cat that we forget to take care of ourselves. The caregiver burden is a syndrome in people who care for geriatric, chronically and terminally ill family members, including pets.

As a caregiver, anticipatory grief is also expected when caring for a cat or pet. Anticipatory grief is grief that arises before an expected death - it's when you know it's coming, but your cat is still alive. Many of us will experience anticipatory grief the moment we are given the news that our beloved cat has been diagnosed with a chronic or terminal illness. This feeling may also arise when we realize that our pet has reached the geriatric stage of their life and where many physical changes occur in a cat's final life stage.

To learn more about caregiver burden syndrome and anticipatory grief, there are a few articles that might help you to understand as a cat owner the many symptoms that you might experience while taking care of your cat. In addition, it includes the steps that can assist you to alleviate caregiver burden syndrome and anticipatory grief.

June marks Pride month and one of our staff members has compiled a list of some great LGBTQ+ reads for you to help celebrate!

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz - Two young boys discover their feelings for each other in this heart-racing tale. You'll be on the edge of the page wondering what happens throughout the many twists and turns of their story together.

What If It's Us by Becky Albertalli & Adam Silvera - Ben and Arthur meet, by chance, at a post office in New York. It is a touching love story that will keep your heart pounding with its realism. Soon to have a sequel later this year titled Here’s to Us, now is the perfect time to read this novel.

Love, Simon [DVD] - A first for a blockbuster film, Love, Simon, is a major motion picture that focuses on a gay character. The movie uses a blend of comedy and suspense to capture the audience and develop the connection with the characters. It can be intense as there are scenes of bullying and blackmail, but it touched my heart as I watched it.

Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli - This is the book that the movie Love, Simon is based on. It features a closeted gay character, Simon, as he deals with bullies and tries to find out if anyone else from his school is like him. Unfortunately, someone else discovers his secret and threatens to leak it out if he doesn't help him.

In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan - Bestselling author Sarah Brennan paints the picture of a fantastical world hidden within our own. Young Elliot is thrust into "The Other Lands" when he realizes that he is one of the few humans that can see the wall that divides the mystical from reality. He braves the waters of political unrest while balancing his feelings for his classmates.

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera - A tragic love story that takes place in a world where you get notified before you are expected to die and you have a 24-hour window to get your affairs in order and live your final hours to their fullest. Read it now before the TV series comes out on HBO!

The Secret Loves of Geeks by Hope Nicholson and Chris Roberson - This fun piece of Non-Fiction blends graphic novel with informative stories and experiences. A great read for anyone that has participated in cosplay or is just into geeky fandoms.

The Bane Chronicles by Cassandra Clare - This is a spin-off novel to The Mortal Instruments that focuses on the boyfriend of Alec Lightwood. Magnus Bane affectionately dubs himself a "freewheeling bisexual," and it covers many of his adventures around the world including the romances faced throughout his life.

The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson - A boy struggles with his feelings of being transgender. His parents believe him to be gay, but his friends know the truth. One day another boy stands up for him in a school fight, and a friendship quickly forms between the two.

The Difference Between You and Me by Madeleine George - In this story two girls hide their romance as they deal with their feelings for each other. One feels that they should be open about who they are, but the other feels that they are risking too much to let it out. When they end up on opposing sides of a school wide argument, they must make the decision of love vs. beliefs.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas - This is a story of a trans boy that is part of a traditional Latinx family. It has some fantasy elements mixed in with the drama of a young boy that is trying to prove that it is okay to be transgender and that the gods do not hate people based on their sexual orientation. I was fully immersed when reading this gripping YA Romance.

As Far As You’ll Take Me by Phil Stamper - Marty Pierce is a musician from small-town Kentucky that wants to get away after he graduates in order to explore his sexuality and discover who he is. He moves to London under the guise of studying abroad in a music camp. Then he does all that he can in order to try and make a living so that he can make the move permanent.

More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera - Oh Adam Silvera, how you tease me with romance just to drag my poor heart through the mud. Aaron Soto lives in the Bronx and deals with everything that one would hope that someone in the LGBTQ+ community wouldn’t have to go through. It has a slight Sci-Fi element to it that will keep you wondering what will happen next.

The Gravity of Us by Phil Stamper - Cal is an aspiring journalist, current social media personality, whose father is chosen to become an astronaut for NASA’s mission to Mars. This forces his family to move to Texas in order to be closer to NASA’s headquarters. Emotions run high as family members butt heads under the stress of the situation while being watched by the pressing news media.

Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzales - What happens if you have the chance to make a summer fling a permanent thing? That is the exact opportunity that Ollie is given when he discovers that his new High School is the same school that his fling goes to. Go on the journey as you join Ollie in discovering how people wear masks when they are around others and see what happens as the two teens try to establish what they mean to each other.

We're celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Dating back to 1979, where a Presidential proclamation was made by President Carter that May 4th would be the start of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Week. That week would celebrate the contributions made to American society and culture from Asian/Pacific Americans. In May 1990 that week was extended to a full month of acknowledging the contributions from Asian/Pacific Americans to arts, entertainment, science, and government and commerce. I'm FELINE fine! In our last Cats & Coffee meeting, we discussed the importance of senior cat awareness. Learning the different resources for senior cat care is essential for a happy and comfortable life. Remember, cats start to show signs of aging around seven years. Make sure to talk to your veterinarian if you start seeing any unusual changes in your senior cat, as cats are masters of hiding pain. Some helpful online resources to understand the physical and mental changes in your senior cat and how to care for them.

Cornell Feline Health Center - Excellent website for feline health information.

Basepaws - Dedicated to research on cats DNA, owners are able to learn their pets breed, health and even their whole genome sequencing.

Pets WebMD - Providing health information to the community and their pets.

The Spruce Pets - A website where practical, real-life tips and training advice information is updated on a regular basis. The team of writers include trainers, Registered Vet Technicians (RVTs) and Doctors of Veterinary Medicine (DVMs).

All about Cats offers a Feline Life Stages downloadable pdf chart for free. You can also go to their Helpful links page for more online resources on cat care.

Pet Care RX - Dedicates to provide information of different medication used by vets to pet parents. There are many helpful articles for senior care for both cat and dogs. They also provide a “Cat Average Lifespan” chart for those interested in a certain cat breeds lifespan.

New Target Industries for Local Economic and Workforce Development

The Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance (LVGEA) has recently identified new target industries for Southern Nevada. In 2017, LVGEA, recognizing the need for the region to diversify its economic base, published a study that prioritized certain key industries for development. Craft Kit: Mini Zen Garden

It is almost impossible to escape the stress in our current environment. Learn to calm your nerves by creating your own miniature Zen garden and escape in your new mini oasis. Henderson Libraries is offering a Mini Zen Garden Kit which includes a black container, white sand, stone, 2 mini succulents, and a wooden fork.

Classical Zen gardens were created at Zen Buddhist temples of in Kyoto during the Muromachi period. They were intended to imitate the essence of nature and to serve as an aid to meditation about the true meaning of existence.

Kits will be available at our Paseo Verde, Gibson, and Green Valley Library locations starting Wednesday, April 21, while supplies last.

Markita's Book Bites: April is National Poetry Month

National American Poetry Month was established by the Academy of American poets in April of 1996, citing inspiration from Black History Month and Women’s History Month. This monthly celebration plays an integral part in April, in reminding people of poetry and how much of an impact it plays on people. Britannica defines Poetry as “literature that evokes a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience or a specific emotional response through language chosen and arranged for its meaning, sound, and rhythm.” It comes in many forms and can be told in numerous ways, such as free verse, haikus, epics, and rhymed poetry are just a few of the distinct types of ways poetry has been done. Poetry conveys a thought from a poet and can be interpreted in separate ways depending on the person. It resonates with people differently, but still makes an impact.

Cats and Coffee: Our Community Cats

At our last "Cats & Coffee" virtual meeting, we spoke about community cats and resources available to help care for them. Community cats are defined as outdoor, unowned, and free roaming cats. The cats could be adult, kittens, feral, friendly, healthy, sick, altered and/or unaltered. These cats are the only cats that do not have owners, so it is important to know how to distinguish a community cat versus an indoor/outdoor cat.

We also talked about the difference between stray and feral cats. Feral cats will not approach and will likely seek hiding places to avoid people. These cats will not meow, beg, or purr.

Stray cats on the other hand, may approach people, houses, porches, or cars. They may also be vocal, meow, or “answer” your voice.

Cats & Coffee : Kittens, Kittens and more Kittens!

In our last meetup we learned that kitten season was upon us. Starting in late February, we see the rise of kittens being available for adoption in shelters and other animal organizations. If you were one of those people who adopted one of those lucky kittens, then you’re in for a treat! In their first year of life, kittens go through many growth stages. There are several resources available that can help you understand these growth stages.

Going to your local veterinarian is the most important resource that you can have for any pet. Your vet can explain those first year of life changes in your new kitten. They can also provide you with great reading resources and a kitten wellness check.

Do you love taking pictures of your new family member? Cat photographer Andrew Marttila provides awesome tips and tricks in how to take great pictures of cats and kittens in his new book How to take Awesome Photos of Cats.

If you prefer visual guides, alleycat.org provides a downloadable kitten progression chart for free.

Craft Kit: Little Garden

Spring is almost here (March 20, to be exact) and what better way than to welcome it than by setting up a garden in the beautiful Nevada desert? There are some great benefits from gardening. For example, exposure to vitamin D which increases your calcium levels which helps with your bones and your immune system. It boosts your mood and helps to alleviate stress levels. Gardening can also help combat loneliness and is also a good family bonding moment if you are with other people.

This upcoming kit is good way to start your own garden. With a little pot, a little dirt, and a seed, you are starting your new activity in a whole new world. You don’t have to have a perfect garden, but you can learn as you go.

Henderson Libraries is offering a little garden starter kit March 8th to get you started this spring. Little Garden Kit includes:

Welcome to Cats & Coffee! A new year is a good time to reset to a healthy, stress-free environment for yourself and your fur babies. In our first virtual meeting, we discussed cat-related challenges during the pandemic, and how to identify and decrease stress in cats. We also learned the many ways cats communicate through sound, tail, and facial gestures.

Celebrate Women's History

Women's History Month was created to commemorate, celebrate and encourage the study of the accomplishments and advancement from women in history. Originally in 1978 as week of celebration in Sonoma County, to honor women, it eventually gained popularity nationally and In 1981 Congress passed the Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Eventually in 1987 Congress would then recognize it as Women's History Month. What better way than to learn more about women in history than getting it from their perspective and others? Take a look at these suggested biographies.

Kamala's way: an American life by Dan Morain - Get to know the first woman Vice President in history of the United States of America in this biography by Dan Morain as he analyzes her start working in the Alameda District Attorney's office to her historic win with President Joe Biden.

A lab of one's own: one woman's personal journey through sexism in science by Rita Colwell, PhD, and Sharon Bertsch McGrayne - In Colwells book, she discusses her life in science and the sexism she has had to experience not just working in labs, but in professional organizations. She includes other women who have also had the same experiences she has had and the fight against the status quo working in STEM.
Just as I am: a memoir by Cicely Tyson - Cicely Tyson is considered an icon in not only in black cinema, but in cinema in general. From her works in Sounder and Roots, Tyson was an astounding and accomplished actress who was revered for her work in the black arts. She completed her autobiography 'Just As I Am' just before passing. In her memoir she discusses her life in Hollywood and her beginnings and all of her accomplishments for her 96 years of living.

Breaking the Ice by Angie Bullaro - This was a great and inspirational story to young girls to give it their all, no matter the gender. In this story, we learn about Canadian hockey player Manon Rheaume, the first woman to play in the National Hockey League.

Women of St. Rose

“BMI Hospital was the first hospital in Henderson, Nevada. It was built in 1942 to serve the employees at Basic Magnesium, Inc. (BMI). The BMI plant shut down its operations in 1944, and the hospital was put up for sale.

Father Peter Moran, pastor of St. Peter's Church in Henderson, wrote a letter to Mother Mary Gerald Barry of the Adrian Dominican Sisters of Michigan in 1946 suggesting that the Sisters purchase the hospital. The Adrian Dominican Sisters proceeded with the purchase, and the hospital was renamed Rose de Lima and turned over to the Sisters in 1947.

Seven Adrian Dominican Sisters arrived in Henderson in 1947 to assume responsibility for the hospital. These Sisters, along with countless other women in the Henderson community, worked hard during many lean years to ensure that the hospital could continue to provide high quality care to Henderson's residents.” - Henderson Libraries Digital Archives

Henderson Oral History Project

Henderson Libraries participated in a grant funded oral history project that interviewed people in Henderson in various different perspectives. These interviews illustrated a different view of life of a growing city. You have the option of viewing the interviews or reading the pdf transcripts.

Starting off the new year can be overwhelming. Why continue to set resolutions every year? Let's set some goals! Setting goals allows you to work on them throughout the year and you can track them in a journal. One way that you can track and monitor your goals is by working in a bullet journal.

Designed by Ryder Carroll, bullet journaling is used with the intent to have an organized personal system. This system helps organize scheduling, reminders, to do lists, brainstorming, and other organizational tasks in a notebook.
