Green Valley Library Classics Book Club Selections 2012

The Green Valley Library classics book club met on December 14th and drew the next 12 titles that it will read for the upcoming year. The group drew titles from the treasure box which held suggestions made by the members. The following titles were chosen to be read in 2012. The group meets the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Green Valley Library (Sunset and N. Green Valley Parkway). Registration is not required, but please attend to receive the next months title.

Bake Sale success!

The Green Valley Library would like to thank all the members of its community who helped raise funds for the Henderson Libraries Foundation Grand Challenge Bake Sale!

Thanks to you, we were able to raise $842.27 in a matter of just two days! From sheet cakes and cookies to cake pops and caramel apples, a variety of tasty treats were purchased from our bake sale tables on Oct. 7 and 8, all for a good cause: making Henderson Libraries' collections bigger and better!

To meet our initial goal of raising $1,000 in 30 days or less, the Green Valley Library will be holding another mini-sale on Saturday, Oct. 29 to get ready for Halloween! Be sure to stop by 2797 N. Green Valley Pkwy between our Saturday hours of 9:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to show your support and pick up a delicious treat of your own! No trick!

And a special thank you to the staff at the Green Valley Library for donating their time, effort, and so many home-baked goods!

Books to Movies

Want to get away for an hour or two? Love watching movies to escape the daily grind? Come join the Gibson Library for our entertaining Books to Movies program! It will be in our Program Room every second and fourth Tuesday's at 2pm The movies are all based on books, so don’t hesitate to ask if we have a copy available for you to take home and read! Yesterday was the last of our September showings and both were quite interesting. The October showings will be on Tuesday October 11th at 2pm and Tuesday October 25th at 2pm. The movies this month are based on horror novels. I am Legend by Richard Metheson, and Cujo by Stephen King. Call the gibson Library at 564-9261to find out more!

Hodge Podge Book Club

Come and Join the Gibson Library's Hodge Podge Book Club. We have combined our Graphic Novel Book Club and Not-So-Grown-Up Book Club. Our next meeting will be held on October 12th at 6:30. We will be discussing the book Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff. For November we will be reading The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels by Ree Drummond. We even have the book picked out for December. It's going to be another graphic novel to keep up with the Hodge Podge theme. So attend the meeting in October to find out our next graphic novel!

60 Days to Better Health

Henderson Libraries had the 60 Days to Better Health kick-off a few weeks ago on September 10th. Now it's time to get started with the special events! These events will be held at both the Gibson and Green Valley Libraries. The first one that Gibson will be hosting is Trader Joe's Presents: Brain Foods. It will be this Saturday, September 24th, from 2:30 to 3:30. Join Ellen Schwarz from Trader Joe's for an introduction to "Brain Foods" and how they affect your life today and long term. There will be quizzes, prizes and samples of delicious foods that are good for your brain! The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. You can register online or by calling 564-9261 option 5. 60 Days To Better Health is sponsored by an Institute of Museum and Library Services grant. The Friends are having a used book sale at the Gibson Library, 100 West Lake Mead Parkway. The sale starts at 9:30 a.m. on Friday Sept. 2nd and runs through Tuesday Sept. 6th ($2.00 per bag day). Resume and Job Interview Tips at the Gibson Library

Jackie Georgiou of the Alexandra Group is returning to the Gibson Library for an encore presentation of her popular workshops "How To Write The Perfect Resume" (Saturday Aug. 13 at 1 p.m.) and "How To Interview Effectively" (Saturday Aug. 20 at 1 p.m.). Drop In Computer Help at Gibson Library

During the month of August, the Gibson reference staff will be available from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm every Tuesday and Thursday to answer basic computer questions. Henna tattoos at the Library!

Teens were treated to henna tattoos at Malcolm Library last Thursday. The art/custom of Mehndi, or henna tattoos, originated in ancient India and has since become a popular art form in the United States. Teens who attended the program learned about the tradition of Mehndi and got to choose a tattoo pattern for themselves. All the henna tattoos were created free-hand by the talented Miss Marcie from Gibson Library. Thanks Miss Marcie! Check out the pictures below!
