One of my favorite people, Future of Music Coalition’s Kristin Thomson, presented at MIDEM this week with some of the earliest findings of their Artist Revenue Streams Survey project. This talk focuses on the actual money that makes its way into an individual artist’s pocket, so for all of you who harped on the Time 100K Indie Rockers article, you should watch this.

Tamaryn, “The Waves” The Waves (2010, Mexican Summer)

I am so, so, so terribly late to the game on this record. 4AD female-fronted gauziness meets Stevie Nicks (just a touch!) for one wonderfully moody album. I know some people find Zola Jesus to be a bit too much, too overblown, and they might be the kind of people who enjoy the restraint that’s exercised here.

But seriously, back to the more important question: How the fuck did no one tell me about this album?

This record gets bonus points for its Portraits of the Past (!?) association.

Man dies from self-inflicted wound on Liacouras Walk:

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but this happened at my alma mater yesterday. Liacouras Walk, for those unfamiliar with Temple, is one of the major walkways on campus. This particular location is one of the busiest and highly trafficked. It appears that the person may have been a Temple student at one point, but all the reports seem to differ on this. It hardly matters. I am thinking of that person today, their family/friends, the witnesses of this tragic incident, all of my friends/colleagues at the university, and anyone else who is trying to make it through the day. I lost one of my former students to suicide this past fall and it hurts to think other people will be experiencing a similar, perhaps more intense, pain over this experience.

From Wikipedia: In late 1977 G.E. Smith got his first break, in the form of Dan Hartman, fresh off his hit “Instant Replay”. He hired the guitarist to front his band for a “lip-sync tour” of Europe and the US.

Dan Hartman definitely got his money’s worth from the “lip-sync” band in this video. It’s like G.E. (on bass!) knew Hall, Oates, and Lorne Michaels would be watching.

Kehinde Wiley’s works reference specific paintings by Titian and Tiepolo, but he incorporates a range of art historical and vernacular styles in his paintings, from the French Rococo to the contemporary urban street. Wiley collapses history and style into a uniquely contemporary vision. He describes his approach as “interrogating the notion of the master painter, at once critical and complicit.” He makes figurative paintings that “quote historical sources and position young black men within that field of ‘power.’” His “slightly heroic” figures, slightly larger than life size, are depicted in poses of power and spiritual awakening. He deliberately mixes images of power and spirituality, using them as a filter in the portrayal of masculinity. Kehinde Wiley’s exhibition Infinite Mobility recently appeared at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. (viaDeitch)

A little backstory to this clip before you watch it:

Will Smith’s father abandoned him and his mother when he was a child, and when Will was finally getting into show business and making a name for himself, he tried to sneak his way back into his life like nothing happened. Will co-wrote this episode, and James Avery (Uncle Phil) said “this scene was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to shoot in my life. Every emotion, every word.. that was Will”

Will was actually supposed to play it off and then walk away, and there was originally an alternate scene that was supposed to happen, but he actually completely cut out what was supposed to be said, and did all of his own dialogue. The hug at the end of this scene is completely genuine, and this was a stepping stone in Will’s career where he started to take on the “do what feels, sounds, and looks right” approach to his acting.
