On Saturday 2nd June Friends of Ruskin Park will be having some jubilee fun and volunteering. At 10am we will join together to do some much needed painting of the Finsen Rd railings. The more volunteers, the merrier and the quicker we can crack on with the volunteer's jubilee picnic and the "uphill versus downhill" cricket match. All you need to do is bring a strong work ethic, good humour, a paintbrush, some picnic food (which you are happy to share) and your trainers.

I'm afraid that last time is accurate.

The problem is that FCC don't operate a full driver rota on Sundays and they have no staff or train depots south of Blackfriars, so the last southbound loop train has to leave central London early enough to allow it to return north and allow the driver to clock off relatively early. The last northbound train at 22:27 is the southbound 21:15 on its way to the depot after doing the loop.

They're certainly designed to handle more traffic than Elfindale, etc, but perhaps designated is a better word. For better or for worse someone in the mechanisms of power has decided that Casino and Red Post Hill are the main routes for north/south traffic.

In the case of Casino that possibly wasn't the best decision ever...

After all of the press releases citing 19 May as the date that First Capital Connect finally start running at the weekend, I was looking forward to being able to get the train home from somewhere north of Victoria on Sunday. My train returns to Euston shortly after 9pm, so I planned to walk along to St Pancras and then catch the train home to Herne Hill.

However, the timetable says that the very last train of the entire night from St Pancras to Herne Hill will depart at 9:05pm. Surely that can't possibly be right? That's absolutely dire! We all know why First Capital Connect are so unpopular (and their reputation is highly deserved), but surely even they couldn't be this dismal?

Come on now, the joke's over. First Capital Connect had us all for a minute there; but could they tell us the real train times now please?

Yes I do think it would create bad traffic jams (ok maybe gridlock and chaos not good words to choose). Traffic already builds up every rush-hour tailing back from Dulwich Village right up to St Faith's Church sometimes. If you had more traffic coming down Red Post and then coming out of Casino onto Red Post then that would create a difficult situation. Have you seen the state of Casino Avenue roads lately? Holes and stones everywhere.

Stephen says "Casino Avenue and Red Post Hill are obviously designed to handle more traffic". I can't see how he comes to that conclusion.

Elfindale and Frankfurt are narrower roads, I agree, but traffic is something you have to live with in London. Why do people have to bring up these ideas?

Would be interesting to know what road/street you live on, thereses?

There are measures, e.g. removable bollards, that make access for emergency services straightforward. So that shouldn't be a worry.

I'm more interested in your other points. One, do you really think that forcing traffic onto main roads would create gridlock and chaos? That seems a bit dramatic and hardly believable. Two, you seem to think that traffic flow through residential neighbourhoods is completely fine. Would you recognise a difference between main roads and residential roads in terms of their use for traffic?

Yes some people do dismiss this idea. Why force all the traffic onto the main roads i.e. Denmark Hill, Red Post Hill, Half Moon Lane, and have no movement in between? It would create chaos and gridlock situations. Even if some roads are closed at one end doesn't mean children are going to be able to play out as there will still be cars parking and moving.

Also, you've got to think about if ever there was a fire or someone had an accident/taken ill in their home and the emergency services couldn't get access to these roads easily. Going all the way round the world wouldn't be an ideal situation surely.

Poets corner street party is fast approaching, June 30th.

We have Spenser Road booked for closure, a farm will be visiting, a couple of bands have signed up to play, the no 3 bus might be making a return. At one of our recent meetings we had an amazing turn out from Poets Corner residents particularly Spenser Road with loads of fantastic ideas.

We now need to turn these ideas into action and need your help to make this amazing event happen again

However this year we are really short of help in organising the event. There are various things that need doing before the day, on the day and afterwards that still have no owner or champion. Lots to be done in Spenser Road but we need some more of the residents of Spenser road to stand up, shout out loud that “we want to party”, and get involved.

So, we know you are out there and if you have offered to help, we salute you, if you haven’t then we would love to hear from you and see you at the next meeting that will be taking place in the Prince Regent on Wednesday 23rd May at 8.00 p.m.

I'm not sure about that Rob. The timetable runs through to December, three months after the end of the Olympic period in September. FCC has introduced timetable changes in September when needed before (the usual months for changes being May and December); I doubt they'd give up those three months if there was still work to be done.

I'm also fairly sure that the Programme's Key Output 1 (all of the signalling and station work on the route through central London) will be completed within weeks. The next stage - focused on the rebuilding of London Bridge - won't seriously affect Herne Hill or the central London route beyond all of the Brighton trains running fast from Blackfriars to East Croydon via HH.

The only work left to be done on the cross-London route before 2018 is connecting St. Pancras to the East Coast Main Line through the new Canal Tunnels, which wouldn't require closing Thameslink for more than a long weekend.

Sounds like you're dismissing the idea out of hand. Maybe it's possible to have road closures on the residential streets, so that traffic is forced onto the main roads, or maybe a traffic engineer has a better idea. We don't have to accept the current traffic-clogged noisy dangerous roads!

I would say a definite no to road closures. It can only possibly benefit the people on that particular street, and cause problems for absolutely every other road in the neighbourhood by increasing their traffic. How is that at all fair? Yes, it's a lovely idea to have quiet streets with less cars and the kids out playing, but the sad fact is there are so many more cars on the roads these days that this will never happen. Those days are gone.

We can calm traffic, make roads safer to cross, make more effort to give our kids good road awareness, and teach them to walk safely to the many parks in the area. It's that or moving to the countryside (all that mud? - never!) .

On another note, Casino Avenue is tiny.. I can't believe it's been used as through route at all! Seems ridiculous?
