How to get the heroin monkey off your back

There's really two ways to go: You can go the medical route and take the methadone or suboxone or other variation on this theme or you can find the right kind of help to get you totally clean so you can stay clean. To get off, you have got to find a place that will help you through the withdrawal with help, good nutrition, physical and mental support. The place I work, the guys coming off heroin say they never had such a comfortable withdrawal. Not pain free but tolerable. Find out how a pla [...]

Clearing out heroin addiction

Is there any hope for a heroin addict? Will they always be an addict or can they put this part of their life behind them? There is real hope if they find a holistic program that eliminates the cravings. You have to get the person through withdrawal and eliminate the cravings. Then they have to learn how to make drug-free decisions, especially at times of stress when they might want to use heroin again. Such a program can be found but it may not be the first one you come across. Keep looking, and [...]

Heroin addiction is a child of the old opium trade

Heroin and opium are both opiates, both addictive, both requiring treatment for recovery. Opium goes way back to the importation of Chinese workers for industry and the railroads. By exploiting those workers, American inherited an old Asian tradition -- opiate addiction. Many old Western towns as well as cities in the East had their opium dens into which cowboys or citydwellers alike would disappear for days. The laudanum used by so many women of that century to handle a multitude of ills was op [...]

Celebrities can get hooked on heroin just as easily...

Some celebrities we may have loved and some we may not have loved have been addicted to heroin or other opiates. Like John Belishi, David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, Miles Davis, Robert Downey Jr. and Jerry Garcia. Some of these people were or are fine performers and have been lost to us because or partly because of the drugs. Heroin and other opiates don't help anyone, they may only dull the pain that the person is feeling for some reason. But if the person can find help at a treatment center for t [...]

Heroin has to be one of the worst addictions

Whoever invented heroin did no favors for the human race; coming off this addiction is grueling. There's sweats and nausea and deep bone and muscle pain and cramps. A person coming off heroin will feel like life itself depends on getting and using more heroin. So a treatment program for heroin addiction has to understand this and help the person through a tolerable withdrawal. Some programs give other drugs to prevent withdrawal -- great, but they are addictive themselves and are abused by s [...]

have you ever seen anyone in withdrawal from heroin addiction?

I was trying to help this fellow at an addiction center with his withdrawal from heroin. It was made tougher because he would not accept help. Well, he finally let me do some massage on the muscles in his legs because they hurt so much. He was so skinny. It was obvious that his world had become heroin and nothing else. They have no idea how much they hurt those who love them. They only love the drug. That's why they need the help of an addiction center.

Heroin addiction -- no one deserves this fate

Heroin addiction is so destructive of life and joy, not only for the addict but for the addict's family, that no one should have to suffer. But it takes a very effective rehab to break a person free from this addiction. Simply administering other opioid drugs in the hope that they will at least stay legal is not good enough. A person should be free and that takes plenty of hands-on work and learning new life skills. Don't settle for years of medication, find a program that will free a [...]

Why do people get addicted to heroin?

There's a reason people start using drugs including heroin. It starts with a problem of some kind. It could be stress or unhappiness or pain or failure. It could even be boredom or the feeling of not being challenged. A person finds a solution that makes things feel better but that feeling is short lived. More heroin or other drug makes the problem go away, or so it seems. Finally, since most illicit drugs are addictive, the person has no choice but to keep taking that drug and getting that [...]

First memory of heroin addiction

The first time I saw someone who was addicted to heroin was in New York in 1998. A young African-American woman sat on a chair on the sidewalk near 42nd street and nodded off. I had never seen such a thing before and it shocked me. I wanted with all my heart to help her but I had no resources. Often a family does not have to face a person's addiction directly but only the effects of it. The ruined lives of family, children, the worry, the bills. Don't wait to help someone who is addicted [...]

Heroin addictions can end in treatment

Addiction to opiates has been around for a lot longer than there have been heroin treatment centers. This kind of addiction goes back hundreds of years in China and may have been brought to this country by Chinese who came to work on the railroads and other industries. But it matters little. People are still losing their lives. The only answer is a treatment program that gets to the bottom of the addiction and helps a person start living anew, free from the killing effects of heroin.

Rewards of being staff in a heroin addiction center

When I see people recovering in a heroin addiction center like the one where I work, it means a lot to me. It means that families have a loved one back, and a good person is put back into life. Not every person who is an addict can be saved but many are good people who deserve a better shot at life. It's a great thing to help people recover their lives by being at this heroin addiction center.

Working at a heroin addiction center

For the last year and a half, I have worked at a heroin addiction center. And not just heroin, but meth, cocaine, crack, opiates of any type, alcohol, you name it. The number of ways that people can find to cause self-destruction are amazing. But I've found that no one starts out intending to be an addict. They just want relief: from pain, stress, fear, shyness, problems they don't know how to solve, or even boredom. Unfortunately, heroin and other drugs are very addictive and the cho [...]

More heroin addiction centers needed in U.S.

In 2005, more than three hundred thousand Americans were admitted to heroin addiction centers for treatment to addiction to opiates, consisting mostly of heroin addiction. Nearly four million Americans have tried heroin at some time in their lives. Heroin is one of the most addictive drugs on the market. Which means that many of the 150,000 or so people who try heroin each year will need a heroin addiction treatment center to help them kick the drug habit.

I remember meeting this young woman at a heroin addiction center -- her family had brought her in for treatment. It was right before Christmas. She was a pretty young woman but was painfully skinny and had sores all over her face. She told me that her mother had come to see her for the holidays and knew "somehow" that she was using heroin. She was puzzled as to how her mother knew. I couldn't even say anything. It was so obvious to me, another mother, that she was in serious troubl [...]
