This session came together so quickly, because it really was a labor of love. We kind of poured our hearts into it. Everything we had been wanting to create and design for a while already, the location of our dreams, professionals we've always wanted to work with - it all came together perfectly. Last fall we travelled to the Netherlands and stayed at beautiful Olmenhorst for a wedding shoot together with Katja Scherle. Despite the cool fall weather, we had a lovely day on the estate. We explored the gardens and orchard for foliage that we mixed with the great floral materials bought directly at the world's largest flower auction.

Finnish Midsummer Wedding inspiration feature in Vow Magazine

We just got our copies of VOW hot off the presses all the way from Austria. It's a wonderful fine art collection of wedding inspiration, looks behind the scenes of wedding artists and real weddings. And we had the great pleasure to have our finnish midsummer inspired shoot we did together with German photographer Katja Scherle featured in its very first issue.

What we wanted to show in our shoot is the beauty of Finland's summer and the magic of the midsummer celebration, with the aim of inspiring couples worldwide to create a truly personal and intimate wedding out of the ordinary. One that can easily be done on a low budget by foraging floral decor and using dishware, linens, furniture and props from your childhood home or your grandma's kitchen.

The Finnish midsummer time is much more than just a celebration of the longest night of the year. We connect it to childhood memories, intimate family gatherings and personal traditions. Sitting by the bonfire until the early morning hours, relaxing in the sauna and being one with nature and the simple life at the summer cottage.

Our shoot was inspired by this feeling of intimacy, by family traditions and midsummer magic. As the location we chose the private island of Michaela's in-laws at the western coast of Finland. The island and its buildings have been in the family for almost 100 years and so it offered the perfect backdrop for our session. We foraged the woods of the islands for wildflowers and greenery, used dish ware and cutlery that have been in use for many decades, hand-died paper for the wedding stationery with natural ingredients to give them the look of books from your childhood.

We envisioned a wedding day far off from the hassle and city noise for couple who wants nothing at all like a big ballroom wedding. Couples who envision their wedding as a beautiful, magical summer day in the yard of their childhood home or in the middle of nature. Finnish midsummer traditions and the tranquility of days spent at the summer cottage offer the perfect inspiration for a peaceful, intimate summer wedding filled with natural details and family heirlooms.

Our story starts inspired by an old midsummer magic tale. It is said that if a girl picks eight wild flowers from eight different meadows, binds them into a floral wreath and lays it below her pillow for the night, she will dream of the man that she is going to marry. The eight wild flowers are also said to bring great luck to a marriage. Our bride Paulina picks these eight flowers in the early morning of her wedding and binds them into the floral crown that she wears on the big day. Her bouquet is made from a mix of garden flowers, foraged greenery and wild flowers picked the morning of the wedding. Paulina spends some quiet time in the woods and by the seashore before setting the tables and getting ready for the ceremony.

After the wedding the bride enjoys relaxing moments in the sauna and a dip in the cool ocean. The sauna whisk tied from fresh birch greens is said to ward of bad luck. The perfect ending to a beautiful day.

A NAUTICAL WEDDING INSPIRATION SHOOT

In the end of last summer, we shot this little nautical wedding inspiration spread for the Finnish Häät magazine. On a beautiful, sunny day we headed to Uusikaupunki where Michaela's in laws have their cottage on a little island.

At the Pursiseuran Paviljonki restaurant, the perfect place for a natutical wedding, we set up a lovely little table setting, arranged flowers, styled and took so many photos that it wasn't possible to fit them all into the magazine spreads.

And yes, those are our men in the pictures - we're kind of nice that way, letting them participate in our work ;)

Tämä syksyisen rustiikkinen pöytäasetelma antaa lämpimän ja juhlavan tunnelman illallisellenne. Asetelma toimii loistavasti myös syksyisen hääpöydän asetelmana. Vaihda kukkia ja vihreitä mielesi mukaan, nouda lehdet ja kukat puutarhastasi tai käytä luonnon kukkia ja vihreää.

This rustic fall harvest centerpiece will give a warm, festive feeling to a cozy dinner or would work perfectly for an autumn wedding or event. You can adjust the flowers and greens to your wishes, pick foliage and florals from your garden or use wild flowers and greens.

Käytimme asetelmaan lajitelman lehtiä, marjoja, suuren auringonkukan, punaista astilbea, oransseja krysanteemeja ja dhaaliaa. Jos haluat käyttää eri kukkia, pidäthän huolen, että asetelmassa on muutama suuri ja useampi pienempi kukka täyttämässä asetelmaa. Valitse pitkää ja leveähköä vihreää ja pienempiä lehtiä peittämään kukkasientä.

We used a selection of foliage, berries, legumes, a large sun flower, red astilbe, orange chrysanthemes and dahlias. If you want to choose your own blooms and greens, make sure you get a good selection of sizes and shapes. Pick a few large flowers and add smaller blooms, choose long flat greenery and pair it with shorter, fuller foliage.

Ainoat työvälineet kukka-asetelman tekoon ovat sakset tai kukka-sakset ja kukkasieni. Käytimme sientä, jonka mukana tulee pieni tarjotin, mutta voit käyttää myös tiilimäistä sientä ja leikata siitä sopivan kokoisen palan vaitsemaasi astiaan. Puulaatikko tai simppeli lautanen käy hyvin. Upota sieni veteen muutamaksi minuutiksi ja pidä huoli, että se on täysin läpimärkä ennen asetelman tekoa.

The only tools you need for making the floral centerpiece are a flower sponge and some good scissors or floral clippers. We chose a ready sponge + plastic dish combination, but you can easily choose your own vase, wooden box or even a simple plate and place a floral sponge on top/inside. Make sure you soak the sponge in water for a few minutes beforehand - it needs to be completely full of water.

Start with your long, flat greens to create the base of your arrangements. We chose ferns which work particularly well. Then add your other foliage.

Kun olet asetellut lehdet, laita asetelmaan valitsemasi suurimmat kukat, käytimme auringonkukkaa ja kaali-kukkaa.

Once you have placed all your foliage, you can add the largest flowers or blooms. We used a stem of kale and a sun flower.

Next add your longer greens and florals to the sides of the arrangement.

Once you're done with this, you can fill up all the gaps with smaller florals and possibly some additional foliage.

If you want to add some legumes of fruit to your arrangement, you will need some floral wire or wooden skewers. Cut them to the right size, then stick them carefully into your vegetable or fruit - we used radishes - then add them to your centerpiece. You could choose to add small apples or pears or any kind of small root vegetable.

Nyt asetelmasi on valmis, tarkista vielä jokainen kulma asetelmastasi ja lisää pieniä kukkia tai lehtiä, mikäli vihreää kukka-sientä pilkottaa asetelmasta. Voit laittaa asetelman juhlapöydällesi tai kuten me, korosta rustiikkista tunnelmaa puulaudalla tai rustiikkisella pöytäliinalla.

Now check your arrangement from every angle and if necessary add some flowers or foliage to wherever you can see some floral sponge. And you're ready. Now you could place this arrangement on your table to use as a centerpiece by itself.

We wanted to give this an extra rustic touch with a withered wooden board we placed underneath the floral arrangement.

Next we added some pear, radishes and red & green foliage to the board, finished it all up with some pretty votives and we were done!

WE'RE MOVING

So, it's been really quiet around here for the past weeks, but we've had our hands so full that there was simply no time to blog. While our day to day work and our projects take their fair amount of time, we got a little extra load all of a sudden. Remember this post? Literally two weeks after I snapped those pictures of our finally ready studio we got the notice that our space has been sold and our lease is being terminated after 3 months.

So, we cried a little, then moved on to finding a new place for us to work in. And that hasn't been the easiest project - we had a long list of requirements to a space really. Next to the minimum size requirement and the maximum price, these other points were just as important. We want it to be central, but not so central that during rush hours it will take us ages to get to. We want a place that is on the ground floor with its separate entrance or if on a higher floor, it needs direct access to a freight elevator. It should be in ok condition, but really not fancy, shiny and new - our work does tend to be dirty at times, but at the same time we need a creative and "clean" environment for our planning and design work. Natural light is really important for us, so any kind of cellar space is out of the question. The space should have some personality; we love the industrial but homey feel of our old space for example. And there is the most difficult point that is impossible to describe in an ad or see on a picture: the feeling needs to be right.

Wow, right? What a list. And that's exactly why we've been a-wall for these previous weeks (months, yeah). We read the listings every day, posted space search ads, we contacted just about everyone we know who could have a lead on a space, we went to see quite a few places, called about even more.

And then finally one place just felt right. And it's basically only a few minutes from our old place. So, right now we're moving. Next week we'll be starting some new projects in our brand new studio - so exciting! We'll definitely snap some pics once the place is ready.

But for now, we leave you with a little more work space inspiration.

STYLE FOR YOUR WALLS

One of the things that you see popping up in almost every house tour is the string pocket shelf. And it's not wonder, cause this little baby is pretty, simple, versatile and comes in many lovely color options.

But what we really appreciate is a good styling job. And boy, do the people over at String.se know how to set the scene for their products! Look at these pics! I personally am partial to the botanical one, but really all the settings are awesome.

Makes me feel really bad about having a white one of these darlings lying around here. Still in its bok, waiting to be mounted over my desk. I'll get on that over the Easter weekend.

URBAN SUMMER WEDDING INSPIRATION

Another one of our "recent" projects. It's not really that recent since we shot this inspiration already in the end of summer last year. But the wedding magazine, Häät, we did it for just came out last month, so now we can finally share this with you!

One of our favorite parts about this project was that we got to cooperate with some of the greatest people & suppliers. The venue for instance was clear for us right away – after all we share a door with Kaiku and it's just up the stairs from our studio. It'll officially open next month for the public; be sure to check it out, especially if you're looking for an urban wedding venue in a lovely neighborhood ;)

Saara, the gal behind Pukuni, custom-made the wedding dress Anna is wearing in the pics. We wanted something very simple and flowy, perfect for a summer wedding – and we loved what Saara came up with! By the end of the shoot our lovely model Anna was convinced that she wants just this kind of dress for her own wedding.

Milla and Noora from hair salon Bow, with Bow we have worked already for a boudoir shoot did a really sweet job with the hair & make-up. Relaxed and pretty – exactly what we wanted our bride to look like. If you haven't found that place to get your hair done yet (we know it can take years), pay the girls at Bow a little visit.

Regina, the "Cupcake Goddess" brought over a big stash of boxes and boxes full of delicious cupcakes, yum! If you're looking for some lovely desserts for more grown up tastes (spicy mexican chocolate anyone? Or perhaps apple maple bacon, guinness chocolate or lime margarita?), get in touch with her. Right away.

RECENT PROJECT: WOMEN'S DAY 2013

This is how we spent our women's day. Same end client as last year, new venue, new style, but just as much fun. We really like it when clients give us the freedom to experiment a little in creating the event visuals. This year's event was about lifestyle & luxury and invited were exclusively ladies. Of course.

We used lots of tissue paper in pwc brand colors, most of which ended up on our mannequin #1. The 2nd one wore a little cocktail dress consisting of one sheet of orange silk tissue paper and about 30 pieces of simple white printing paper. Plus a little paper glue. We also made several installations of white shoe cartons and paper bags + again some tissue paper and fresh spring flower arrangements.

So, now we got loads of tissue paper & bags at our studio waiting either for a next project or for one of you to pick them up. Perhaps you need a bunch of simple white paper bags for a little party, shower or a wedding? Silk tissue paper (in a variety of colors, not just the ones you see here) to wrap your guest favors? If yes, send us an email, we'll let you know how much we got and when you can pick it up.

I have spent this week in beautiful Vienna, where the spring is a bit further than in Helsinki. Spring is all about fresh start; blooming greens and flowers such as tulips. If you want to have a spring wedding, use a lot of fresh spring greens to decorate your most important day.

OUR STUDIO: WE'RE GETTING THERE

It's now been over a year since we moved in here and although at real busy times this space is so chaotic that you may not be able to find the floor, bit by bit it's coming together. Our interior is a collection of functional furniture, recycled pieces from the art school's dumpster in our yard, flea market finds and lots of stuff leftover from events.

Olemme muuttaneet ihanaan studioomme jo yli vuosi sitten, mutta vasta nyt se alkaa olla esittelykunnossa. Kiireisinä aikoina kaoottisuus on niin konkreettista, että edes studiomme lattiaa ei näy. Sisustus on kokoelma vastapäisen koulun jätelavalta löydettyjä esineitä, kirpputoreilta ja kierrätyskeskuksista löydettyjä huonekaluja sekä valtava määrä tapahtumien ylijäämistöä. Studiomme sisustus on juuri sitä, mitä Helsingin vanhin tehdasrakennus henkii; kotikutoista tyylikkyyttä.

The space is divided into something we could call an "office" where we meet with people, have coffee, plan events, write offers and invoices, etc. The other space with our awesome big, new, self-built working table is our work space. Here we make floral arrangements, craft, build, store tools, vases, fabrics and lots of other props.

Tila on jaettu kahteen eri osaan. "Toimisto-puolella" tapaamme asiakkaitamme, juomme kahvia, suunnittelemme tapahtumia ja teemme tarjouksia sekä hoidamme yrityksen hallinnollisia asioita. Toinen tila on työhuonetta, missä meillä on uusi, mahtava, itse tekemämme työpöytä. Täällä teemme kukka-astelmia, rakennamme somisteita ja varastoimme tarvikkeita.

Our studio is located in Helsinki's Kallio, an area just outside the very center. We're a little difficult to find in an inner yard, but our studio is surrounded by event spaces, clubs, an art academy, a large dance studio, some show rooms, and some other creative companies. Perfect!

Perhaps we'll invite y'all over for the next restaurant day (in May). It's been our plan ever since the first one a few years back, but somehow we've never had the time in our schedule. Fingers crossed it'll work this time.

Studiomme sijaitsee Helsingin Kalliossa, heti ydinkeskustan ulkopuolella. Olemme sisäpihalla, hieman hankalasti löydettävissä, mutta mahtava miljöö taideakatemian, baarien, ravintoloiden ja tanssistudion huomassa tekee lokaatiosta täydelllisen!

Toivottavasti saamme kutsua teidät Ravintolapäivänä toukokuussa Hey Lookin omaan raflaan. Olemme suunnitelleet sitä jo kauan, mutta emme ole kertaakaan ehtineet toteuttamaan suunnitelmaamme, peukut pystyyn!

A LITTLE COLOR

So, it's been a long time. We've been re-charging, organizing, planning, creating, expanding our studio and hoping for spring – which still seems to be a while away. We'll show you a few thing we've been working on during the next week. On a sidenote: a birdy told us that the title on our recent color inspiration post could be seen as a reference to a popular or not so popular semi-pornographic novel. Well, it wasn't. At least not on purpose. So, to avoid confusion, we went ahead and changed the heading.

For now, peeps, enjoy your weekend. We hope you have it a little warmer than we do. But if you don't or if all you see outside is grey, here's some color to brighten your day!

FAVORITE BLOOMS: PEONIES

Now that the wedding planning season for this summer has officially started (we can see it from the amount of emails we're getting from summer brides), we thought we'd share a little about our favorite wedding flowers with you. And today we're starting with one of the most popular blooms: the peony (paeonia). They are gorgeous litte darlings, easy to work with and they make a great impact. It's such a shame that they're in season only from the end of spring til the beginning or middle of summer. In Finland peony season is from March until June, if the summer is particularly warm, it may already be difficult to get all the common varieties in June, whereas if the summer is cooler, you might even still get some in July. But really, the season is way too short.

What we love about peonies is that they don't need other flowers to make for a pretty centerpiece or bouquet. Sometimes you don't even need more than one bloom to fill a vase.

Pairing peonies with other flowers of similar shape is super easy and we know that many brides love this full look. Roses are a great match, english varieties and garden roses especially, other favorites to match are dahlias and ranunculus.

These peonies with their yellow center are great in a colorful, eclectic bouquet of poppies, astilbe, craspedia, garden roses, succulents, dusty miller and adiantum greens. (see much more here)

Sweet peas, although totally different with their delicate, irregular shape are lovely paired with peonies.

One very important thing to tell your florist or to remember yourself (if you want to diy your wedding flowers) is how open you want the peonies to be. Usually you buy them quite closed, the blooms in the shape of a little ball. How quickly they open depends on where you keep them; the more sun/natural light they get and the warmer water they're in, the quicker they'll open. If you're going for a DIY wedding bouquet, buy a few test flowers 2 weeks before the wedding and see how long it takes for them to be in the for you perfect shape. If you're ordering them from a florist, show some example pictures. Obviously the more open the bloom, the bigger and fuller the result will be, hence if you want a large bouquet, the same size would need more closed peonies than open ones.

With Jenni's bouquet on the right here we went for a mix of half opened and fully opened fluffy peonies in blush and soft pink.

These white peony bouquets might be very similar in size, yet the left one with its very open peonies (source) consists of roughly half the amount of blooms as the right one (source).

DIY IDEAS: 10 BACKDROP FAVORITES

Sometimes you want to direct the focus of your guests onto a certain area - a perfect example being the wedding ceremony altar, the wedding couple's seats in the reception venue or a dessert table - and adding a backdrop can be a great way. If you're looking for a little diy inspiration, check out the ideas we collected from around the web.

Easier than paper poms and they don't wrinkle when you store or transport them: yarn poms. We spotted this aweseome backdrop idea on the Three Nations Blog

We're loving this ceremony backdrop of this styled shoot featured on Ruffled. Striped fabric curtains and giant paper flowers - so cool!

Helium filled balloons make for a great backdrop. Whether you use only one color of balloons or several, or you layer different types of balloons as Bando are doing here - it's always a fun element.

Alright, in this case, the tree really does its part in creating the perfect wedding ceremony backdrop. But the flowing ribbon garlands would also look pretty in other environments - we're sure of it!

More ribbons - and a lovely example of how you don't need that giant, awesome tree (above) to make this kind of backdrop work. Layer ribbons of one color scheme in different lengths to create this effect. So pretty! We spotted this one in this wedding featured on Ruffled.

Right: We're loving this ceremony backdrop featured in this wedding. The couple hand-wrote their favorite poems onto a large roll of drawing paper and used this as backdrop and aisle runner.

This backdrop is made from over 8000 fake rose petals. We think the result is amazing and would be perfect for a romantic beach wedding.

BEAUTIFUL STYLING BY GINNY BRANCH

There are quite a few event designers and stylists out there whom we admire. Ginny Branch is definitely one of them. Her styling is always impeccable, her work delicate and understated - we simply love her signature style! And she gets to work with such talented folks all the time - we gotta admit, we're a little envious. Check out this series of inspiration shoots she did together with Amy Osaba (florals), Erica Loesing (paper goods) and Harwell Photography (pictures) for Atlanta Wedding Magazines.

Not only do we love the look of these shoots, but also the concepts. The first one is a sweet inspiration set for a bridal shower, brunch or even a wedding. Perfect for spring time!
