…the UN’s Committee on World Food Security said the world would need a 75-90% increase in food production to feed the extra 2 billion people expected to be alive in 2050. But climate change could reduce yields worldwide by 5-25% over the same period.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates that there are 215 million children in child labor worldwide, 115 million of them in hazardous forms of work. It also estimates that 21 million people are in forced labor, six million of them children.

By utilizing this toolkit, you have shown that your company is concerned about these grim statistics. You are interested in reducing the chance that your products—and the raw materials they come from—are manufactured, mined or harvested by children who should be in school, or by workers locked in sweatshops or forced into work through false promises or threats.

“1.2 million children saved! Slavery finished for good.” What a wonderful sentence that would be to hear, but do we believe that such a sentence can ever be declared?

Many people believe that slavery was a problem ‘fixed’ in the 1800s thanks to the work of individuals such as William Wilberforce, Thomas Clarkson and Abraham Lincoln. However, there are more slaves today, thanks to trafficking and forced labour, than there was during the years of the slave trade.

I used to think that child trafficking was a foreign problem. I believed it is a terrible thing that happens to the poor and uneducated people of the world and Australia had nothing to do with such a trade.

Hey World It’s Me recognises International Women’s Day.

Worldwide today:

Up to 50% of sexual assaults are committed against girls under the age of 16.

Globally, 603 million women live in countries where domestic violence is not yet considered a crime.

Up to 70% of women in the world report having experienced physical and/or sexual violence at some point in their lifetime.

Over 60 million girls worldwide are child brides, married before the age of 18…

In the face of such unacceptable figures, the international community is strongly committed to change the plight of women.

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) requires that countries party to the Convention take all appropriate steps to end violence.

This year’s theme for International Women’s Day, “A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women” seeks to strengthen international community’s commitment to put an end to violence against women. As part of the effort the UN leads to fight violence against women, Secretary-Generals Ban Ki-moon’s UNiTE campaign calls on all governments, civil society, women’s organizations, men, young people, the private sector, the media and the entire UN system to join forces in addressing this global pandemic.
