Friends of the Rouge Clean Up June 1

HFCC invites everyone to roll up their sleeves and lend a hand with the 2013 Friends of the Rouge Clean Up Saturday, June 1. The event helps beautify the Rouge watershed and works to enhance the local community. The clean up takes place from 9 a.m. to noon.

Please meet at HFCC's Kingfisher Bluff deck, located at the back of the main campus. Activities for the day may include removing invasive plants, track pick-up, wood debris management and other debris.

HFCC Financial Aid Priority Deadline for fall 2013

The HFCC Financial Aid Priority Deadline for fall 2013 is June 6, 2013, for students to submit the 2013-2014 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and June 27, 2013 to submit all other requested documentation.

HFCC celebrates successful commencement ceremony

HFCC's 2013 Commencement Ceremony took place May 4 as the College celebrated the accomplishments of graduating students at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn.

HFCC held a morning and an afternoon ceremony where thousands of family members and friends joined their graduates during the exercises. During the 2012-2013 academic year, approximately 1,900 students graduated from the College with a degree or a certificate.

HFCC welcomes Dr. Stan Jensen as the institution’s fifth president

The HFCC Board of Trustees announces the appointment of Dr. Stan Jensen as the fifth president of the institution. Dr. Jensen’s first day was Tuesday, May 1, 2013.

Dr. Jensen said that he is ready to contribute to the College and believes that this opportunity is a good fit for him based on his background, experience in higher education, and desire to help the organization increase its value to the Dearborn community and state of Michigan.

Inside Track wins College’s Innovation of the Year Award

Henry Ford Collegiate Academy named 2013 'Innovator of the Year' by Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce

The Henry Ford Collegiate Academy, which is a partnership between HFCC and Dearborn Public Schools (DPS), earned recognition by the Dearborn Chamber of Commerce as the 2013 “Innovator of the Year.”

HFCC and DPS received this prestigious award at the 2013 Business Recognition Awards Ceremony & Expo (BRACE) held Friday, April 19. The Dearborn Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors this annual event, which showcases the contributions to the city from more than 35 area businesses.

Relay for Life Team hopes to raise $1,000 April 27-28

HFCC's Sisson Gallery will host the 2013 Annual Student Art Exhibition, which takes place Monday, April 15, to Tuesday, April 23.

The Sisson Gallery is displaying the best student work representing graphic design, interior design, two-dimensional, drawing and painting, ceramics and photography.

Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday; or by appointment.

Spring Dance Concert April 26 and 27

HFCC's Full Circle Dance Company will present its 24rd Annual Spring Dance Concert on Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27, at 8 p.m.in the Adray Auditorium.

The Full Circle Dance Company consists of dancers from throughout Metro Detroit. The dance company is a great experience for high school juniors and seniors and HFCC offers dual enrollment opportunities for applicants. The Full Circle Dance Company requirements include a strong background in dance, especially Ballet or Modern, an audition, an interview, and registration for the three credit class, College Dance Company.

WHFR holds Radiothon Week 2013 April 14-20

WHFR-FM (89.3), the student-run radio station at HFCC, will hold Radiothon Week 2013 Sunday, April 14, to Saturday, April 20. This week-long event features live concerts and special on-air events, including the chance to win a weekend lease of the all-new Ford Focus Electric.

This fund-raiser also provides the community a chance to show its support for programming on WHFR (89.3 FM), which is celebrating 28 years of broadcasting. Since WHFR does not receive any government funding, more than 60 percent of its operating budget comes from donations.

Pre-Pharmacy Seminar April 25

HFCC will host its annual Pre-Pharmacy Spring Seminar Thursday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Hackett Conference Room, located in the Health Careers Education Center (HCEC).

Attendees will receive information about pharmacy school admission requirements, pharmacy school opportunities, HFCC's Pre-Pharmacy PCAT online course and other program benefits. Guest advisors from colleges and universities will be in attendance.

Faculty member receives 2013 Women’s Recognition Award

Detroit resident Cassandra Fluker, HFCC's Student Activities officer, is the recipient of the 2013 Women’s Recognition Award.

“This is my 10th anniversary at HFCC and having received the 2013 Women's Recognition Award is a wonderful tribute,” she said.

“I am deeply honored. All of the programming that takes place is for the well-being and betterment of students. I want them to graduate from (HFCC) as well-rounded individuals and with skills that contribute to being successful in life,” she added.

Child Development Center joins St. Jude Trike-A-Thon program April 15-25

The HFCC Child Development Center will join thousands of pre-schools, daycares and other groups across the country in sponsoring a St. Jude Trike-A-Thon event during the week of April 15 to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research centers.

The week-long event teaches bike and riding-toy safety lessons, using interactive stories featuring characters, Bikewell Bear and Pedals the Bunny. At the end of the week, students will bring their tricycles to school to practice their newly-learned safety lessons.

Students collaborate with Dearborn on historic home restoration

The Architecture/Construction and Interior Design programs are currently working with the City of Dearborn to restore a historic 1919 home, located at 22668 Nona, in the Ford Historic Homes District.

A total of 25 students from both programs are participating in the project, according to Chad Richert, HFCC lead instructor for the Architecture/Construction program. Collaborating with Richert on this effort is Karen Wilmering, HFCC program coordinator for the Interior Design program.

HFCC student named Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar

The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society recently named HFCC Honors Student Amir El-Aswad a 2013 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar. One of 1,800 applicants, El-Aswad will receive a $1,500 scholarship and a special medallion.

“I was absolutely surprised and delighted at the same time when I learned that I won this scholarship,” said El-Aswad, of Bloomfield Hills.

HFCC will host “Imagine the Possibilities: Non-Traditional Health Careers for Men” Wednesday, April 24, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room H-150 in the Health Careers Education Center. This Perkins-funded event is coordinated by HFCC’s University Transfer, Advising & Career Counseling Center.

“The Perkins Act provides funding to improve gender participation and completion in nontraditional programs of study that prepare individuals for under-represented occupations,” said HFCC counselor Diane Green, coordinator of this event.

Hammond Planetarium to host Spring Star Talk from March to May

HFCC will present “Nothing Gold Can Stay” at the HFCC Hammond Planetarium, located in Room S-126 of the Science Center, from Tuesday, March 26, to Saturday, May 11. This program will take place on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays in March, April and May. The show time for Tuesday and Friday is 7:30 p.m. on the following dates:
• March 26;
• April 2, 5, 9, 16, 23, 30; and
• May 3, 7.

The Saturday show time is 3 p.m. on the following dates:
• March 23, 30;
• April 6, 13, 27; and
• May 4, 11.
