Arthur is a weekly book and educational toy series. Every week we buy a new piece of him. (This week he gets his left lung and his voice box, I think.) Some day I'd like to meet a preteen kid who can hold a camera still for more than an eighth of a second. But Andy loves being on camera. Today the train I switch to on the outskirts of Tokyo was just slightly more crowded than usual. I was smashed into the people sitting down, and someone's briefcase was wedged into my ass. Now that I have a mobile phone that takes decent video (320 X 240 @ 15 fps) I'll try to put out crappy little videos more often. This absolutely brilliant and true-to-life short video documentary was created by David Shuff, a videographer who spent a year in Japan. What I love most about it is there's no embellishment whatsoever. David has given me permission to redistribute it through my feed. I'm truly grateful, because anyone who's interested in learning about what Japan is really like should watch it.

How he not only managed to capture so many interesting moments but also got all those people to act so naturally in front of the camera is a testament to his talent. This movie shows 100% typical family life for me. It's for everyone who said they were curious to see the inside of Grandpa's house, and to those of you studying Japanese and can't get enough of hearing the real language.

I slapped this one together as quickly as I possibly could, and still from start to finish it took over four hours. Subtitles are an incredible time suck; not only adding them, but they also make the video take forever to render. I'm either going to have to find better video editing software or upgrade my CPU and motherboard. Working with the timeline in Windows Movie Maker is painfully slow.

I'm glad blip.tv lets me cross-post to my blog so I can just hit the upload button and go to bed. It's 2:40am right now and I have to leave for work at 7.

Update: I re-encoded it with Videora because it looked like shit. (Quicktime Pro does a horrible job with MPEG-4 compression.) Looks much nicer now, fewer artifacts, and I added letterboxing by running it through VirtualDub's resize filter before encoding to H.264.

Here it is, finally! I edited the house tour video, getting it down to a decent length and size. Of course, I could pick it apart for mistakes, but that's just me. Overall, I really like it, despite being able to hear snot whistling in my nose, jump cuts galore, and there being a raindrop on the lens. Actually, I like the jump cuts. For some reason they seem to add comic timing.

You'll need to install Quicktime 7 to view it in its full widescreen H.264 glory. Unfortunately, these days you can't upgrade QT without also upgrading iTunes to the craptacular version 5.

More videos to come, but life is still getting in the way. I spent all last night Crap Cleaning and defragging my landlord's computers instead of editing media as planned. Also hooked him up with free anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities. He was very pleased. Next I'll try to convert him to Firefox.

(Mommy's eyes popped out of her head and rolled around on the floor when she came home to a "house" instead of a "habitat.") I got about as much cooperation as I can expect from an 8 year old who was pulled away from the PlayStation for 20 minutes. Preteen kids can either help you learn patience and compassion, or they can deepen your understanding as to why some animals eat their young. It all depends on your attitude.

This is a sneak preview of the real video to come as soon as I finish editing. The final version will look a WHOLE lot better in hi-res widescreen. The cheapo ultra wide-angle lens I picked up on Friday for US $50 is wonderful. When the video is encoded at half the resolution of DVD, you can barely notice the chromatic aberration around the edges.

I took a couple more videos over the weekend. They'll be out this week. Along with the podcast from the Apple Store in Shibuya that goes along with the video I posted a few weeks back.

Right before we left, I took the video camera out of my backpack, turned it on and walked through the supermarket holding the camera as inconsicously as possible. Since I couldn't see what I was filming, the video is crooked and jumpy. I'm tempted to figure out how to attach the camera to the front of a shopping cart in a way that won't draw too much attention. And also to buy a wide-angle lens for it.

Hey, I lied. I can't help it — videos are just so frikkin' easy to make! Post-production is simply connecting the Clie to my PC via USB and doing a cut & past job in QuickTime Pro. I save it as a self-contained hinted movie with MP4 video and audio encoding.

Well, I was in Shibuya a few nights ago after work to buy a wide angle lens so I can shoot panoramas. I didn't have my mics, but I did have my Sony Clie PEG-NX70V, which as you can see I'm really starting to enjoy using as a video camera. Even with plenty of other data on the 128MB Memory Stick (text articles off the web, e-books, WAV files from the voice recorder, Atok for handwriting recognition in Japanese, etc.) I still have enough room for about 40 minutes of video. Granted, it's only 160 X 112 pixels big, but it doesn't look bad at all when viewed at double size, does it?

So I decided to do a wee little videocast of a Japanese style fast food restaurant. This is really mundane stuff to me, but I know there will be lots of people diggin' it because it's different and it's a glimpse into the daily life here. I like that I can whip out my mics or camera practically anywhere and just start talking. It took a while to build up the guts, but I'm completely over the self-consciousness now!

Go figger.

I videoblogged my family's weekend trip to Tokyo Disney Sea. From the point of view of the video's host, I should have done more narration, but I was there as a husband and father, so I wanted to focus my attention on my family. As much as I love to share my life with all of yuns (that's plural for you), frankly, it's not a something that appeals to my wife and I respect that. I did have her listen to some of the audio I captured with the binaural mics and she was impressed, so at least she can understand the appeal. She is who she is, I am who I am, and that's that. There's no need evaluate the situation any deeper than that. That's where couples get in trouble.

Half way through the day it hit me that 90% of what you hear in Disneyland is, well…fake. It's a really, really well-done fake, but listening to a podcast recorded there, heck, you might as well be plugged directly into the PA system that's pumping out all the sound effects. I'm not a Disney hater; they're absolutely the best at what they do. I'll save the details for the next podcast.

In the meantime, I posted the video I shot to commonbits.org. To retrieve it, you'll need to learn how to use BitTorrent. There's a tutorial here. If you can't figure it out, don't worry about it; we're not talking Oscar award-winning cinematography here. It's not that great of a loss.

The guy running commonflix.org let me get away with it this time, but the content doesn't seem to be the kind of stuff that's normally hosted there. If anyone knows a more appropriate site to use, please let me know.

So the file linked to below is a torrent file that contains data used by programs like iPodderX (Mac), DopplerRadio (Win) or Azeurus (Java) to download the actual video.
