Vishu വിഷു is an important Kerala festival celebrated in the month of "Medam" and a Hindu festival in the Indian state of Kerala and as Bisu in the Mangalore & Udupi Districts Karnataka State, usually in the second week of April in the Gregorian calendar.

Vishu Celebrations

Vishu is celebrated with much fanfare and vigour in all parts of Kerala. It is considered a festival of light and fireworks, and decorating lights and bursting of firecrackers (Vishupadakkam) is part of the celebration. Other elements of Vishu include buying of new clothes (Puthukodi) for the occasion, the tradition of giving money called Vishukkaineetam, and the Vishu feast or Sadya, which consist of equal proportions of salty, sweet, sour and bitter items. Feast items include Veppampoorasam, Mampazhappulissery, Vishu kanji and Vishu katta.

The most important event in Vishu is the Vishukkani, which literally means "the first thing seen on the day of Vishu after waking up". The Vishukkani consists of a ritual arrangement of auspicious articles intended to signify prosperity, including rice, fruits and vegetables, betel leaves, arecanut, metal mirror, yellow flowers called konna (Cassia fistula), holy texts and coins, usually in the prayer room of the house. This is arranged the night before Vishu and is the first sight seen on Vishu. On Vishu, devotees often visit temples like Sabarimala Ayyappan Temple or Guruvayur Sree Krishna temple to have a 'Vishukkani Kazhcha' (viewing) in the early hours of the day.

The day of Vishu is often considered as the first day of the Zodiac Calendar. However, if the transit of Sun into Aries (Mesha Sankramana) occurs after dawn on the first day of the zodiac calendar, then the Vishu celebrations will be on the next day, i.e. the second day of the calendar. In 2014, first day of the calendar was on 14 April but the transit of Sun into Aries (Mesha Sankramana) occurred after 7 am. Therefore Vishu was celebrated on 15 April 2014. The Vishu Kani is meant to bring luck and prosperity for the year starting from Vishu Day Medam 1st. As Vishu marked the first day of the Malayalam Zodiac, it is considered an appropriate time to offer oblations to Hindu gods. Vishu signifies the sun's transit into the Meda Raasi (first zodiac sign) according to Indian astrological calculations, and falls on the spring equinox. During the equinox, a day has equal number of hours of daylight and darkness, which describes the origin of the word "Vishu" which in Sanskrit means "equal". Vishu is a festival, on which farmers in kerala begins their agriculture activities.

Vishu Sadhya

The Sadhya, feast, സദ്യ is a major part of all Kerala festivals. However, Vishu Kanji, Thoran and Vishu katta are more important during Vishu. The Kanji is made of rice, coconut milk and spices. Vishu katta is a delicacy prepared from freshly harvested rice powder and coconut milk served with jaggery. For Thoran, the side dish, there are also mandatory ingredients. Other important Vishu delicacies include Veppampoorasam (a bitter preparation of neem) and Mampazhappulissery (a sour mango soup)

Wish you all Indians a Happy Republic Day

Though India became a free nation on August 15, 1947, it declared itself a Sovereign, Democratic and Republic state with the adoption of the Constitution on January 26, 1950.

India achieved independence from British rule on 15 August 1947 following the Indian independence movement noted for largely peaceful nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience led by the Indian National Congress.

The independence came through the Indian Independence Act 1947 (10 & 11 Geo 6 c. 30), an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that partitioned British India into the two new independent Dominions of the British Commonwealth (later Commonwealth of Nations): India and Pakistan.

India obtained its independence on 15 August 1947 as a constitutional monarchy with George VI as head of state and the Earl Mountbatten as governor-general.

The country, though, did not yet have a permanent constitution; instead its laws were based on the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935. On 28 August 1947, the Drafting Committee was appointed to draft a permanent constitution, with Dr.B. R. Ambedkar as chairman.

Hon'ble President of India Shri pranab mukherjee address to the Nation on the eve of 66^th Republic Day of India on 25^th Jan 2015 at 7:00 PM IST. Click here for LIVE Video

While India's Independence Day celebrates its freedom from British Rule, the Republic Day celebrates of coming into force of its constitution. A draft constitution was prepared by the committee and submitted to the Assembly on 4 November 1947.

The Assembly met, in sessions open to public, for 166 days, spread over a period of 2 years, 11 months and 18 days before adopting the Constitution. After many deliberations and some modifications, the 308 members of the Assembly signed two hand-written copies of the document (one each in Hindi and English) on 24 January 1950. Two days later, it came into effect throughout the nation.

It’s an unprecedented gesture toward an American president and one that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hopes will intensify the diplomatic outreach in a bilateral relationship that at times has fallen far short of both countries’ hopes. Never has a U.S. leader been the chief guest at the Republic Day parade, the centerpiece of India’s national day celebrations. So the invitation to President Obama, whose three-day visit to the world’s biggest democracy begins Sunday, assumes significance for U.S.-Indian ties and for the aggressive diplomacy Mr. Modi has adopted since becoming prime minister in May. More

India got its freedom on 15 August 1947 as a sacred government with George VI as head of state and the Earl Mountbatten as representative general. The nation, however, did not yet have a perpetual constitution; rather its laws were focused around the changed pioneer Government of India Act 1935. On 28 August 1947, the Drafting Committee was selected to draft a changeless constitution, with Dr.b. R. Ambedkar as executive.

While India's Independence Day praises its flexibility from British Rule, the Republic Day celebrates of coming into power of its constitution. The main Republic Day celebration is held in the national capital, New Delhi, at the Rajpath before the President of India. On this day, ceremonious parades take place at the Rajpath, which are performed as a tribute to India.

Republic Day honours the date on which the Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950 replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.

The Constitution was passed by the Constituent Assembly of India on 26 November 1949 but was adopted on 26 January 1950 with a democratic government system, completing the country's transition toward becoming an independent republic. 26 January was selected for this purpose because it was this day in 1930 when the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress.

To mark is held in the capital, New Delhi, from the Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan (the President's residence), along the Rajpath, past India Gate. Prior to its commencement, the Prime Minister lays a floral wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, a memorial to unknown soldiers at the India Gate at one end of Rajpath, which is followed by two minutes silence in the memory of unknown soldiers.

It is a solemn reminder of the sacrifice of the martyrs who died for the country in the freedom movement and the succeeding wars for the defence of sovereignty of their country. Thereafter he/she reaches the main dais at Rajpath to join other dignitaries, subsequently the President arrives along with the chief guest of the occasion. They are escorted on horseback by the President's Bodyguard.

The Beating Retreat ceremony officially denotes the end of Republic Day festivities. It is conducted on the evening of 29 January, the third day after the Republic Day. It is performed by the bands of the three wings of the military, the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. The venue is Raisina Hills and an adjacent square, Vijay Chowk, flanked by the North and South block of the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's Palace) towards the end of Rajpath.

The Chief Guest of the function is the President of India who arrives escorted by the (PBG), a cavalry unit. When the President arrives, the PBG commander asks the unit to give the National Salute, which is followed by the playing of the Indian National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana, by the Army developed the ceremony of display by the massed bands in which Military Bands, Pipe and Drum Bands, Buglers and Trumpeters from various Army Regiments besides bands from the Navy and Air Force take part which play popular tunes like Abide With Me, Mahatma Gandhi's favourite hymn, and Saare Jahan Se Achcha at the end.

This Republic Day, our Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi invited US President Mr. Obama to be the 1st US President to grace the occasion as Chief Guest.

A salute of 21 guns and the unfurling of the Indian National Flag by Dr. Rajendra Prasad heralded the historic birth of the Indian Republic on that day. Thereafter 26^th of January was decreed a national holiday and was recognised as the Republic Day of India.

The Constitution gave the citizens of India the power to choose their own government and paved the way for democracy. Dr. Rajendra Prasad took oath as the first President of India at the Durbar Hall in Government House and this was followed by the Presidential drive along a five-mile route to the Irwin Stadium, where he unfurled the National Flag.

Diwali also known as Divali, Deepavali and the "festival of lights", is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn every year.

For Hindus, Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes. For Jains, Diwali marks the attainment of moksha or nirvana by Mahavira in 527 BC.

Diwali or Deepavali, popularly known as the "festival of lights", is celebrated between mid-October and mid-November for different reasons.

Diwali, Deepavali is a festival celebrated by all Indian irrelevant of their cast, creed and religion with equal enthusiasm and gaiety. While the rest of the Indians are imbued into the festive mood for the advent the Hindu New Year, the agrarian society of India is jubilating for a different reason.

The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair.

Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit fusion word Dīpāvali, formed from dīpa (दीप, "light" or "lamp") and āvalī (आवली, "series, line, row"). Dīpāvali or Deepavalli thus meant a "row" or "series of lights". Its celebration include millions of lights shining on housetops, outside doors and windows, around temples and other buildings in the communitiesand countries where it is observed.

Diwali (English pronunciation: /dɨˈwɑːliː/)is variously spelled or pronounced in diverse languages of India: 'deepabali' (Oriya: ଦିପାବଲି), 'deepaboli' (Bengali: দীপাবলী), 'deepavali' (Assamese: দীপাৱলী, Kannada: ದೀಪಾವಳಿ, Malayalam: ദീപാവലി, Tamil: தீபாவளி and Telugu: దీపావళి), 'divali' (Gujarati: દિવાળી, Hindi: दिवाली, Marathi: दिवाळी, Punjabi: ਦੀਵਾਲੀ), 'diyari' (Sindhi: दियारी), and 'tihar' (Nepali: तिहार).

The festival preparations and rituals typically extend over a five day period, but the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartik. In the Gregorian calendar, Diwali night falls between mid-October and mid-November.

Diwali dates back to ancient times in India, as a festival after the summer harvest in the Hindu calendar month of Karthikai. The festival is mentioned in Padma Purana, the Skanda Purana, and other Sanskrit Hindu scriptures; the divas (lamps) are mentioned in Skanda Purana to symbolically represent parts of sun, the cosmic giver of light and energy to all life, who seasonally transitions in the Hindu calendar month of Kartik.

Diwali is one of the happiest of holidays in India, with significant preparations. People clean their homes and decorate them for the festivities. Diwali is one of the biggest shopping seasons in India; people buy new clothes for themselves and their families, gifts, appliances, kitchen utensils, small to big ticket items such as cars and gold jewelry. People also buy gifts for family members and friends which typically includes sweets, dry fruits and seasonal specialities depending on regional harvest and customs.

Diwali is also the period when little kids hear ancient stories, legends, myths and battle between good and evil, light and darkness from their parents and elders. Girls and women go shopping, and create rangoli and other creative patterns on floors, near doors and walkways. Youth and grown ups graduate to helping with lighting and preparing for patakhe (fireworks).

There is significant variation in regional practices and rituals. Depending on the region, prayers are offered before one or more deities, with most common being Lakshmi - the goddess of wealth and prosperity. On Diwali night, fireworks light up the neighborhood skies. Later, family members and invited friends celebrate the night over food and sweets.

The religious significance of Diwali varies regionally within India, depending on the school of Hindu philosophy, regional myths, legends, and beliefs. Many see Diwali honouring the return of the lord Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana from exile, as told in the ancient Hindu epic called the Ramayana. To some, Diwali marks the return of Pandavas after 12 years of Vanvas and one year of agyatavas in the other ancient Hindu epic called the Mahabharata. Many other Hindus believe Diwali is linked to the celebration of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, and wife of deity Vishnu.

The five day festival of Diwali begins on the day Lakshmi was born from the churning of cosmic ocean of milk during the tug of war between the forces of good and forces of evil; the night of Diwali is the day Lakshmi chose Vishnu as her husband and then married him.

Some Hindus offer pujas to additional or alternate deities such as Kali, Ganesha, Saraswati, and Kubera. Other Hindus believe that Diwali is the day Vishnu came back to Lakshmi and their abode in the Vaikuntha; so those who worship Lakshmi receive the benefit of her good mood, and therefore are blessed with mental, physical and material well-being during the year ahead.

In India's eastern region, such as West Bengal, Lakshmi is not worshipped, only deity Kali is worshipped and the festival is called Kali Puja.In India's Braj and north central regions, deity Krishna is recognized. People mark Mount Govardhan, and celebrate legends about Krishna. In other regions, the feast of Annakoot is celebrated, with 56 or 108 different cuisines prepared, offered to Krishna, then shared and celebrated by the local community.

In West, South and certain Northern parts of India, the festival of Diwali marks the start of a new Hindu year. Along with Goddess Lakshmi, offerings are made to Ganesha who symbolizes ethical beginnings and fearless remover of obstacles; Saraswati who symbolizes music, literature and learning; and Kubera who symbolizes book keeping, treasury and wealth management.

Before Diwali night, people clean, renovate and decorate their homes. On Diwali night, Hindus dress up in new clothes or their best outfit, light up diyas (lamps and candles) inside and outside their home, participate in family puja typically to Lakshmi - the goddess of wealth and prosperity. After puja (prayers), fireworks follow, then a family feast including mithai (sweets), and an exchange of gifts between family members and close friends.

Diwali also marks a major shopping period in nations where it is celebrated. On the same night that Hindus celebrate Diwali, Jains celebrate a festival of lights to mark the attainment of moksha by Mahavira, and Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas. Diwali is an official holiday in India,Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Malaysia, Singapore and Fiji.

Diwali is also the end of the cropping season. This is the time of the year when farmers would be getting the results of their sweat and blood. The hard work they do all through the year is supposed to pay results in terms of a healthy crop. Harvesting period generally bear a lot of prosperity for agrarian society. Thus, the farmers pray to Goddess Lakshmi (the Goddess of wealth) for the best results.

The name "Diwali" is a contraction of "Deepavali", दीपावली, Dīpāvalī, which translates into "row of lamps". Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps (diyas or dīpas) in Sanskrit: दीप) filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. During Diwali, all the celebrants wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks with family members and friends.

Diwali is a five day festival in many regions of India, with Diwali night centering on the new moon - the darkest night - at the end of the Hindu lunar month of Ashvin and the start of the month of Kartika. In the Common Era calendar, Diwali typically falls towards the end of October, or first half of November each year. The darkest night of autumn lit with diyas, candles and lanterns, makes the festival of lights particularly memorable.

Diwali is also a festival of sounds and sights with fireworks and rangoli designs; the festival is a major celebration of flavors with feasts and numerous mithai (sweets, desserts),as well as a festival of emotions where Diwali ritually brings family and friends together every year. Like major festivals of the world, rituals and preparations for the Indian festival Diwali begin days or weeks in advance. The festival formally begins two days before the night of Diwali, and ends two days after. Each day has the following rituals and significance:

അഞ്ചു ദിവസം നീണ്ടു നിൽക്കുന്ന ആഘോഷങ്ങളുണ് ദീപാവലിക്ക്.

Dhanteras kicks off the five day festival. Starting days before and through Dhanteras, houses and business premises are cleaned, renovated and decorated. Women and children decorate entrances with Rangoli - creative colourful floor designs both inside and in the walkways of their homes or offices.

Boys and men get busy with external lighting arrangements and completing all renovation work in progress. For some, the day celebrates the churning of cosmic ocean of milk between the forces of good and forces of evil; this day marks the birthday of Lakshmi - the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity, and the birthday of Dhanvantari - the Goddess of Health and Healing. On the night of Dhanteras, diyas (lamps) are ritually kept burning all through the nights in honor of Lakshmi and Dhanvantari.

Dhanteras is also a major shopping day, particularly for gold or silver articles. Merchants, traders and retailers stock up, put articles on sale, and prepare for this day. Lakshmi Puja (sometimes spelled Laxmi puja) is performed in the evening. Some people decorate their shops, work place or items symbolizing their source of sustenance and prosperity.

Narak Chaturdasi is the second day of festivities, and is also called Choti Diwali. Typically, house decoration and colourful floor patterns called rangoli are made on or before Narak Chaturdasi. Special bathing rituals such a fragrant oil bath are held in some regions, followed by minor pujas. Women decorate their hands with henna designs. Families are also busy preparing homemade sweets for main Diwali.

The third day is the main festive day. People wear new clothes or their best outfits as the evening approaches. Then diyas are lit, pujas are offered to Lakshmi, and to one or more additional deities depending on the region of India; typically Ganesha, Saraswati, and Kubera. Lakshmi symbolises wealth and prosperity, and her blessings are invoked for a good year ahead.

The day after Diwali, is celebrated as Padwa. This day ritually celebrates the love and mutual devotion between the wife and husband. The husbands give thoughtful gifts, or elaborate ones to respective spouses. In many regions, newly married daughters with their husbands are invited for special meals. Sometimes brothers go and pick up their sisters from their in-laws home for this important day. The day is also a special day for the married couple, in a manner similar to anniversaries elsewhere in the world. The day after Diwali devotees perform Goverdhan puja in honor of Lord Krishna.

The last day of festival is called Bhai dooj (Brother’s second). It celebrates the sister-brother loving relationship, in a spirit similar to Raksha Bandhan but with different rituals. The day ritually emphasizes the love and lifelong bond between siblings. It is a day when women and girls get together, perform a puja with prayers for the well being of their brothers, then return to a ritual of food-sharing, gift-giving and conversations. In historic times, this was a day in autumn when brothers would travel to meet their sisters, or bring over their sister’s family to their village homes to celebrate their sister-brother bond with the bounty of seasonal harvests.

Diwali Lakshmi Puja

Deepavali marks the end of the harvest season in most of India. Farmers give thanks for the bounty of the year gone by, and pray for a good harvest for the year to come. Traditionally this marked the closing of accounts for businesses dependent on the agrarian cycle, and is the last major celebration before winter. Lakshmi symbolizes wealth and prosperity, and her blessings are invoked for a good year ahead. ...

There are two legends that associate the worship of Lakshmi on this day. According to the first legend, on this day, Lakshmi emerged from Kshira Sagar, the Ocean of Milk, during the great churning of the oceans, Samudra manthan. The second legend (more popular in western India) relates to the Vamana avatar of the big three Vishnu, the incarnation he assumed to kill the demon king Bali. On this day, Vishnu came back to his abode the Vaikuntha; so those who worship Lakshmi receive the benefit of her benevolent mood, and are blessed with mental, physical and material well-being.

As per spiritual references, on this day "Lakshmi-panchayatan" enters the Universe. Vishnu, Indra, Kubera, Gajendra and Lakshmi are elements of this "panchayatan" (a group of five). The tasks of these elements are:

Lakshmi: Divine Energy (Shakti) which provides energy to all the above activities. Vishnu: Happiness (happiness and satisfaction) Kubera: Wealth (generosity; one who shares wealth) Indra: Opulence (satisfaction due to wealth) Gajendra: Carries the wealth

In Kerala Diwali or popularly known locally as Deepavali, falls on the preceding day of the New Moon in the Malayalam month Thulam (October–November). The celebrations are based on the legend of Narakasura Vadha – where Sri Krishna destroyed the demon and the day Narakasura died is celebrated as Deepavali. It commemorates the triumph of good over evil. The story of King Bali is also associated with Diwali by Hindus in Kerala. Unlike other parts of India, and other South Indian states, Deepavali is a low profile festival in Kerala and celebrated mostly by Hindus.

Diwali is celebrated around the world, particularly in countries with significant populations of Hindu, Jain and Sikh origin. These include Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Mauritius, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, the Netherlands, Canada, the United Kingdom,United Arab Emirates, and the United States. With more understanding of Indian culture and global migration of people of Indian origin, the number of countries where Diwali/Deepavali is celebrated has been gradually increasing. While in some countries it is celebrated mainly by Indian expatriates, in others it is becoming part of the general local culture. In most of these countries Diwali is celebrated on the same lines as described in this article with some minor variations. Some important variations are worth mentioning.

On this festive festival of peace occasion, Hindu, Jain and Sikh communities also mark charitable causes, kindness, and for peace. For example, at the international border, every year on Diwali, Indian forces approach Pakistani forces and offer traditional Indian sweets on the occasion of Diwali. The Pakistani soldiers anticipating the gesture, return the goodwill with an assortment of Pakistani sweets.

New Year's Day is observed on January 1, the first day of the year on the modern Gregorian calendar as well as the Julian calendar used in the Roman Empire since 45 BC. Romans originally dedicated New Year's Day to Janus, the god of gates, doors, and beginnings for whom the first month of the year (January) is named. Later, as a date in the Gregorian calendar of Christendom, New Year's Day liturgically marked the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ, and is still observed as such in the Anglican Church and Lutheran Church. In present day, with most countries now using the Gregorian calendar as their de facto calendar, New Year's Day is probably the world's most celebrated public holiday, often observed with fireworks at the stroke of midnight as the new year starts in each time zone.

At the cue of “Happy New Year,” everyone smooches the one they love and then the gathering often migrates outside for some awesome fireworks, more drinks, and whatever traditions they have come up with over the years.

In many regions of the world, it is celebrated as a public holiday and the offices, institutions and commercial activities remain closed to observe Happy New Year. Sending New Year cards carrying beautiful quotes is relatively a modern practice which is much popular. People exchange New Year Greeting cards to send warm New Year wishes that are easily available both in stores. Many prefer to scour for innovative and lovely New Year gifts and cards to send warm New Year greetings to their family members and friends. Apart from sending sending cards and gfifts the event is also celebrated by arranging luscious feast that includes various delicious handmade items.

Partying the night away with good drinks, silly hats and noisemakers, you finally hear the news; the ball is about to drop! Everyone gathers into the room, and then the countdown begins.

Whether it is finances or time constraints, there is normally good reasons why you will not have everyone you love close by during the holiday season.

Most countries in Western Europe officially adopted January 1 as New Year's Day somewhat before they adopted the Gregorian calendar. In England, until the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1752, the first day of the new year was the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25, also called "Lady Day". The March 25 date was known as Annunciation Style; the January 1 date was known as Circumcision Style, because this was the date of the Feast of the Circumcision, considered to be the eighth day of Christ's life, counting from December 25 when his birth is celebrated. This day was christened as the beginning of the New Year by Pope Gregory as he designed the Liturgical Calendar.

New Year History

The Romans dedicated New Year's Day to Janus, the god of gates, doors, and beginnings for whom the first month of the year (January) is also named. After Julius Caesar reformed the calendar in 46 BC and was subsequently murdered, the Roman Senate voted to deify him on the 1st January 42 BC in honor of his life and his institution of the new rationalized calendar. The month originally owes its name to the deity Janus, who had two faces, one looking forward and the other looking backward. This suggests that New Year's celebrations are founded on pagan traditions. Some have suggested this occurred in 153 BC, when it was stipulated that the two annual consuls (after whose names the years were identified) entered into office on that day, though no consensus exists on the matter. Dates in March, coinciding with the spring equinox, or commemorating the Annunciation of Jesus, along with a variety of Christian feast dates were used throughout the Middle Ages, though calendars often continued to display the months in columns running from January to December.

When you think about the person you are writing the card for, it really becomes easy to come up with messages that are a good fit. Remember, make your message personal, so that they know you wrote it just for them!

1 January: The first day of the year in the Gregorian calendar used by most countries. Eight of the twelve biggest Eastern Orthodox Churches which have adopted the Revised Julian calendar – Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Romania, Syria, and Turkey – also celebrate 1 January as the New Year.

May Every Moment Of Coming

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2014

Among the 7th century pagans of Flanders and the Netherlands, it was the custom to exchange gifts at the New Year. This was a pagan custom deplored by Saint Eligius (died 659 or 660), who warned the Flemings and Dutchmen, "(Do not) make vetulas, [little figures of the Old Woman], little deer or iotticos or set tables [for the house-elf, compare Puck] at night or exchange New Year gifts or supply superfluous drinks [another Yule custom]." The quote is from the vita of Eligius written by his companion, Ouen.

New Year's Traditions

In many countries, New Year’s celebrations begin on the evening of December 31 New Year’s Eve and continue into the early hours of January 1. Revelers often enjoy meals and snacks thought to bestow good luck for the coming year. In Spain and several other Spanish-speaking countries, people bolt down a dozen grapes-symbolizing their hopes for the months ahead-right before midnight. In many parts of the world, traditional New Year’s dishes feature legumes, which are thought to resemble coins and herald future financial success; examples include lentils in Italy and black-eyed peasin the southern United States. Because pigs represent progress and prosperity in some cultures, pork appears on the New Year’s Eve table in Cuba, Austria, Hungary, Portugal and other countries. Ring-shaped cakes and pastries, a sign that the year has come full circle, round out the feast in the Netherlands, Mexico, Greece and elsewhere. In Sweden and Norway, meanwhile, rice pudding with an almond hidden inside is served on New Year’s Eve; it is said that whoever finds the nut can expect 12 months of good fortune.

Other customs that are common worldwide
include watching fireworks and singing songs to welcome the new year,
including the ever-popular "Auld Lang Syne" in many English-speaking
countries. The practice of making resolutions for the new year is
thought to have first caught on among the ancient Babylonians, who made
promises in order to earn the favor of the gods and start the year off
on the right foot. (They would reportedly vow to pay off debts and
return borrowed farm equipment.)

In the United States, the most iconic New Year’s tradition is the dropping of a giant ball in New York City's Times Square at the stroke of midnight. Millions of people around the
world watch the event, which has taken place almost every year since 1907. Over time, the ball itself has ballooned from a 700-pound iron-and-wood orb to a brightly patterned sphere 12 feet in diameter and weighing in at nearly 12,000 pounds. Various towns and cities across America have developed their own versions of the Times Square ritual, organizing public drops of items ranging from pickles (Dillsburg, Pennsylvania) to possums (Tallapoosa, Georgia) at midnight on New Year’s Eve.

New Year Eve

January 1 represents the fresh start of a new year after a period of remembrance of the passing year, including on radio, television and in newspapers, which starts in early December in countries around the world. Publications have year-end articles that review the changes during the previous year. In some cases publications may set their entire year work alight in hope that the smoke emitted from the flame brings new life to the company. There are also articles on planned or expected changes in the coming year.

This day is traditionally a religious feast, but since the 1900s has also become an occasion to celebrate the night of December 31, called New Year's Eve. There are fireworks at
midnight at the moment the new year arrives (the major one is of Sydney, New South Wales; watchnight services are also still observed by many.

Early New Year's Celebrations

The earliest recorded festivities in honor of a new year’s arrival date back some 4,000 years to ancient Babylon. For the Babylonians, the first new moon following the vernal equinox the day in late March with an equal amount of sunlight and darkness heralded the start of a new year. They marked the occasion with a massive religious festival called Akitu (derived from the Sumerian word for barley, which was cut in the spring) that involved a different ritual on each of its 11 days. In addition to the new year, Atiku celebrated the mythical victory of the Babylonian sky god Marduk over the evil sea goddess Tiamat and served an important political purpose: It was during this time that a new king was crowned or that the current
ruler’s divine mandate was symbolically renewed.

Throughout antiquity, civilizations around the world developed increasingly sophisticated calendars, typically pinning the first day of the year to an agricultural or astronomical event. In Egypt, for instance, the year began with the annual flooding of the Nile, which coincided with the rising of the star Sirius. The first day of the Chinese new year, meanwhile, occurred with the second new moon after the winter solstice.

People born on New Year's Day are commonly called New Year babies. Hospitals, such as the Dyersburg Regional Medical Center in the U.S., give out prizes to the first baby born in that hospital in the new year. These prizes are often donated by local businesses. Prizes may include various baby related items such as baby formula, baby blankets, diapers,
and gift certificates to stores which specialize in baby related merchandise.

Chingam 1 (Chingam Onnu) is the Keralites New Year Day as per the Kerala calender Kollavarsham. 'Chingam' is my favorite month in the Malayalam calender and so is 'August' in the English calender. Keralites celebrate Onam with the biggest pomp and show. Floral Rangolis ( Pookkalam) are made in courtyards on each of these 10 days.

Malayalam Calendar or the Kolla Varsham is the traditional calendar followed in Kerala. Earlier Malayalam calendar dates were followed to determine birthdays and important festivals in Kerala. Even today, many major festivals and important events, ceremonies in temples in Kerala depend on Malayalam calendar and nakshatras (stars).

Malayalam Calendar, Malayalam Era or Kollavarsham or Kollam Era is a solar and sidereal Hindu calendar used in Kerala, India. The origin of the calendar has been dated as 825 CE. Hindus of Kerala are using Malayalam Calender for there religious, cultural and cultivation activities. The Malayalam New Year 1189 Chingam 1st is on August 17, Saturday and is the beginning of Chinga Masam.

As per Malayalam Calender the Kolla Varsham 1189 begins on August 17 2013. The first day of Chingam month is welcomed by people of Kerala with special poojas and prayers. Hindus in large numbers visit their near by temples and in some part of the Kerala parents were give Kai Neettam to their children.

There are many theories about the origin of the calendar. One is that it was started with the reopening of the natural disaster destroyed city of Kollam on the Malabar coast by Mar Abo, an Assyrian saint who ruled a number of churches in Travancore with Syrian liturgy. Some argue that it was founded by the ruler of Venad Udaya Marttanda Varma (a feudatory with capital at Kollam) or by the Vedic philosopher Adi Shankara on the backdrop of the shivite revival among the vaishnavite Nambuthiri Community who are considered to be the ' Nampthali' lost Tribe of the Jews or simply it is a derivation of the Saptarshi Era.

According to Sun's transit Keralites are celebrating new year day as the first day of the month of Mesha or Medam. This day signifies the Sun's transit to the zodiac Mesha Raasi. Currently, it occurs around April 15 on the Gregorian calendar and is celebrated as Vishu.

But now Chingam 1 (around August 15) is celebrated as the new year day. The month Chingam starts in the mid August corressponds to harvest and Onam festival is celebrated in this month. The last month of Malayam Calendar Karkkidakam corresponds the month when the South west monsoon is active. This month is also considered to be bad time as in olden days rains used to bring diseases and damages to lives and property.

Karkkidakam is generally known as the Panja Masam, the month of famine, because of the lack of work during the peak of monsoon. Scripture from Ramayana will be recited till the end of the month and people will abstain from entering into any new ventures or holding auspicious functions during this month. Hence it is also called Ramayanamasam.

The agricultural activities of Kerala are centred around the seasons. The Southwest monsoon which starts around June 1 is known as Edavappathi, meaning mid- Edavam. The North east monsoon which starts during mid October is called thulavarsham (rain in the month of thulam).

The two harvests of paddy are called Kannikkoythu and Makarakkoythu (harvest in the month kanni and makaram) respectively. The Makaravilakku festival is celebrated in the Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala on the 1st day of month Makaram.

Like the months above, there are twenty seven stars starting from Aswati (Ashvinī in Sanskrit) and ending in Revatī. The 365 days of the year are divided into groups of fourteen days called Nhattuvela, each one bearing the name of a star.

Nakshathra - 27 Stars

According to Indian Astrology there are 27 Nakshatras or stars in the zodiac belt. The ecliptic is divided into 27 nakshatras, which are variously called lunar houses or asterisms. The zodiac comprises of 360 degrees. Therefore, the value of each constellation is 13 degrees and 20 minutes when measured from the fixed initial point. These 27 Nakshatras(stars) complete the entire circle of 360 degrees of the zodiac. These reflect the moon's cycle against the fixed stars, 27 days ,7 hours and 45 minutes. Nakshatra computation appears to have been well known at the time of the Rig Veda.

The starting point for this division is the point on the ecliptic directly opposite to the star Spica called Chithra in Sanskrit. (Other slightly-different definitions exist.) It is called Meshaadi or the "start of Aries". The ecliptic is divided into the nakshatras eastwards starting from this point. Note that nakshatra-s are (in this context) not just single stars but are segments on the ecliptic characterised by one or more stars. Hence you will find many stars mentioned for one nakshatra. An additional 28th intercalary nakshatra, Abhijit (alpha, epsilon and zeta Lyrae - Vega - between Uttarasharha and Sravana), is in between Uttarashada and Sravana. Last two (third and fourth) Padas of Uttrashada and first two (first and second) Padas of Sravana are considered to be Abhijith. The nakshatra in which the moon lies at the time of sunrise of a day is the nakshatra for the day.

Tithi

The (anticlockwise) angular distance between the sun and moon as measured from the earth along the ecliptic (circle on the sky in which the sun, moon and planets seem to move) can vary between 0 and 360 degrees. This is divided into 30 parts. The time spent by the moon in each of these parts is called one tithi. The month has two pakshas or fortnights.

The first 15 tithis constitute the bright fortnight or shukla paksha - the waxing phase and the next 15 tithi-s constitute the dark fortnight or krishna paksha - the waning phase. Tithi-s are indicated by their paksha and ordinal number within the paksha. In a given lunar month, there are essentially 30 tithis. The 15th tithi of the bright fortnight (full moon) is called Paurnami or Poornima and the 15th tithi of the dark fortnight (new moon) is called Amavasi. The tithi in which the moon is at the time of sunrise of a day is taken to be the tithi for the day.

Njattuvela

The 365 days of the year are divided into groups of fourteen days called Njattuvela, each one bearing the name of a star. Thus there are 27 Njattuvelas from Aswathy Njattuvela to Revathy Njattuvela. Njattuvela means Njayarinte Nila or position of sun. The first Njattuvela is Aswathy Njattuvela and it begins on Medam 1 or Vishu day(April 14 or 15). In Thiruvathira Njattuvela rain will come down without a break.

The festivals Antupirapp (ആണ്ടുപിറപ്പ് - new year, more commonly called Antupiravi, ആണ്ടുപിറവി or puthuvarsham, പുതുവര്‍ഷം, celebrated on the 1st of Medam, Vishu വിഷു - astronomical new year, and Onam ഓണം, celebrated on the star [tiruʋoːɳəm] in the month of Chingam, are two of the major festivals, the greatest of them being Onam ഓണം.

The Makaravilakku festival is celebrated in the Ayyappa Temple at Sabarimala on the 1st day of month Makaram. This marks the grand finale of the two-month period to the Sabarimala pilgrimage. The 1st of Makaram marks the Winter Solstice (Uttarayanan) and the 1st of Karkadakam marks the Summer Solstice (Dakshinayanam) according to the Malayalam calendar. (According to the astronomical calendar the Summer solstice is on June 21, and the Winter solstice on December 21.)

Formerly the New Year in the Malabar region was on the 1st of Kanni and that in the Travancore region was on the 1st of Chingam. When the Government of Kerala adopted Kolla Varsham as the Regional Calendar the 1st of Chingam was accepted as the Malayalam New Year. Medom is the first month according to the astronomical calendar; it is identical with Chaitram of the Saka Varsha. The first of these months are supposed to mark the Vernal Equinox. Astronomically the calendars need to be corrected to coincide with actual Vernal Equinox which falls on the 21st of March. (Chaitram 1 usually falls on March 20, and Medom 1 falls on April 14.)

Independence Day, observed annually on 15 August, is a national holiday in India commemorating the nation's independence from British rule on 15 August 1947.

India attained freedom following an independence movement noted for largely nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience led by the Indian National Congress (INC).

Independence coincided with the partition of India, in which the British Indian Empire was divided along religious lines into the Dominions of India and Pakistan; the partition was accompanied by violent riots and mass casualties.

The Independence Day of India is much more than commemorating the anniversary of India’s free statehood. It is a moment of celebration, a day to pay tribute to the martyrs because of whose struggle and sacrifice we are breathing an air of freedom. “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom,” said Jawaharlal Nehru about this, one of the most important days in the history of the Indian nation. Independence Day is acknowledged as a national holiday in India.

Independence Day Celebrations

Independence Day, one of the three national holidays in India (the other two being the Republic Day on 26 January and Mahatma Gandhi's birthday on 2 October), is observed in all Indian states and union territories. On the eve of Independence Day, the President of India delivers the "Address to the Nation".

On 15 August, the prime minister hoists the Indian flag on the ramparts of the historical site Red Fort in Delhi. Twenty-one gun shots are fired in honor of the solemn occasion. In his speech, the prime minister highlights the past year's achievements, raises important issues and calls for further development. He pays tribute to the leaders of the freedom struggle.

The Indian national anthem, "Jana Gana Mana" is sung. The speech is followed by march past of divisions of the Indian Army and paramilitary forces. Parades and pageants showcase scenes from the freedom struggle and India's diverse cultural traditions. Similar events take place in state capitals where the Chief Ministers of individual states unfurl the national flag, followed by parades and pageants.

Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programmes take place in governmental and non-governmental institutions throughout the country. Schools and colleges conduct flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural events. Major government buildings are often adorned with strings of lights. In Delhi and some other cities, kite flying adds to the occasion.

National flags of different sizes are used abundantly to symbolise allegiance to the country. Citizens adorn their clothing, wristbands, cars, household accessories with replicas of the tri-colour. Over a period of time, the celebration has changed emphasis from nationalism to a broader celebration of all things India.

The Indian diaspora celebrates Independence Day around the world with parades and pageants, particularly in regions with higher concentrations of Indian immigrants. In some locations, such as New York and other US cities, 15 August has become "India Day" among the diaspora and the local populace. Pageants celebrate "India Day" either on 15 August or an adjoining weekend day.

Independence Day Culture

On Independence Day and Republic Day, patriotic songs in Hindi and regional languages are broadcast on television and radio channels. They are also played alongside flag hoisting ceremonies. Patriotic films are broadcast. Over the decades, according to The Times of India, the number of such films broadcast has decreased as channels report that audiences are over saturated with patriotic films.

The population cohort that belong to the Generation Next often combine nationalism with popular culture during the celebrations. This mixture is exemplified by outfits and savouries dyed with the tricolor and designer garments that represent India's various cultural traditions.Retail stores offer Independence Day sales promotions. Some news reports have decried the commercialism.

Indian Postal Service publishes commemorative stamps depicting independence movement leaders, nationalistic themes and defence-related themes on 15 August.Independence and partition inspired literary and other artistic creations in many languages. Such creations mostly describe the human cost of partition, limiting the holiday to a small part of their narrative.

Salman Rushdie's novel Midnight's Children (1980), which won the Booker Prize and the Booker of Bookers, wove its narrative around children born at midnight of 14–15 August 1947 with magical abilities. Freedom at Midnight (1975) is a non-fiction work by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre that chronicled the events surrounding the first Independence Day celebrations in 1947.

Few films center on the moment of independence, instead highlighting the circumstances of partition and its aftermath. On the Internet, Google has commemorated Independence Day since 2003 with a special doodle on its Indian homepage.

Independence Day History

European traders had established outposts on the Indian subcontinent by the 17th century. Through overwhelming military strength, the British East India company subdued local kingdoms and established themselves as the dominant force by the 18th century.

Following the Rebellion of 1857, the Government of India Act 1858 led the British Crown to assume direct control of India. In the decades following, civic society gradually emerged across India, most notably the Indian National Congress, formed in 1885.

The period after World War I was marked by British reforms such as the Montagu–Chelmsford Reforms, but it also witnessed the enactment of the repressive Rowlatt Act and calls for self-rule by Indian activists. The discontent of this period crystallized into nationwide non-violent movements of non-cooperation and civil disobedience, led by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

During the 1930s, reform was gradually legislated by the British; Congress won victories in the resulting elections. The next decade was beset with political turmoil: Indian participation in World War II, the Congress's final push for non-cooperation, and an upsurge of Muslim nationalism led by the All-India Muslim League. The escalating political tension was capped by Independence in 1947. The jubilation was tempered by the bloody partition of the subcontinent into India and Pakistan.

Millions of Muslim, Sikh, and Hindu refugees trekked across the newly drawn borders in the months surrounding independence. In Punjab, where the borders divided the Sikh regions in halves, massive bloodshed followed; in Bengal and Bihar, where Mahatma Gandhi's presence assuaged communal tempers, the violence was mitigated. In all, between 250,000 and 1,000,000 people on both sides of the new borders died in the violence. While the entire nation was celebrating the Independence Day, Gandhi stayed in Calcutta in an attempt to stem the carnage. On 14 August 1947, the Independence Day of Pakistan, the new Dominion of Pakistan came into being; Muhammad Ali Jinnah was sworn in as its first Governor General in Karachi.

The Constituent Assembly of India met for its fifth session at 11 pm on 14 August in the Constitution Hall in New Delhi. The session was chaired by the president Rajendra Prasad. In this session, Jawaharlal Nehru delivered the Tryst with Destiny speech proclaiming India's independence.

“ Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment, we take the pledge of dedication to the service of India and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity.

” —Tryst with Destiny speech, Jawaharlal Nehru, 15 August 1947[22]

The members of the Assembly formally took the pledge of being in the service of the country. A group of women, representing the women of India, formally presented the national flag to the assembly.

The Dominion of India became an independent country as official ceremonies took place in New Delhi. Nehru assumed office as the first prime minister, and the viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, continued as its first governor general. Gandhi's name was invoked by crowds celebrating the occasion; Gandhi himself however took no part in the official events. Instead, he marked the day with a 24-hour fast, during which he spoke to a crowd in Calcutta, encouraging peace between Hindu and Muslim.

Eid Al-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Traditionally, the observance begins with the sighting of the new moon.

Eid al-Fitr عيد الفطر‎ ʻĪd al-Fiṭr ʕiːd al fitˤr is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting (sawm). Eid Al Fitr is also called as Feast of Breaking the Fast, the Sugar Feast, Bayram (Bajram), the Sweet Festival and the Lesser Eid and festival of breaking of the fast.

Eid Mubarak ঈদ মুবারক عيد مبارك‎ ید مُبارک, ईद मुबारक ഈദ്‌ മുബാറക്‌ is a traditional Muslim greeting reserved for use on the festivals of Eid ul-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr.

As Ramadan's last days have arrived, Muslims across the globe gear up preparation for the biggest event of Eid al Fitr. The U.S. Post Office has issued a new Eid stamp to commemorate this year's holiday.

As you know that Eid is the most enjoyable day for all Muslim. All Muslim people celebrates this occasion.

Eid al-Fitr عيد الفطر‎ ʻĪd al-Fiṭr ʕiːd al fitˤr "festival of breaking of the fast", also called Feast of Breaking the Fast, the Sugar Feast, Bayram (Bajram), the Sweet Festival and the Lesser Eid, is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting (sawm).

The religious Eid is a single day and Muslims are not permitted to fast that day. The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan. The day of Eid, therefore, falls on the first day of the month of Shawwal.

This is a day when Muslims around the world show a common goal of unity. The date for the start of any lunar Hijri month varies based on the observation of new moon by local religious authorities, so the exact day of celebration varies by locality. However in most countries, it is generally celebrated on the same day as Saudi Arabia.

Eid refers to the occasion itself, and Mubarak means "Blessed." (e.g.: "Eid Mubarak, sister!") Muslims wish each other Eid Mubarak after performing the Eid prayer.

The celebration continues until the end of the day for Eid ul-Fitr (or al-Fitr) and continues a further three days for Eid ul-Adha (or Al-Adha).

However, in the social sense people usually celebrate Eid ul-Fitr at the same time as Eid ul-Adha, visiting family and exchanging greetings such as "Eid Mubarak". This exchange of greetings is a cultural tradition and not part of any religious obligation.

Take note, Eid is celebrated twice a year, the first one is after the Ramadan, the occasion is called Eid Ul Fitr, and the other is celebrated during the month of Dhu al- Hijjah or two months after and the festivity is called Eid U Adha.

Although the date of Eid al-Fitr is always the same in the Islamic calendar, the date in the Gregorian calendar falls approximately 11 days earlier each successive year, since the Islamic calendar is lunar and the Gregorian calendar is solar. Hence if the Eid falls in the first ten days of a Gregorian calendar year, there will be a second Eid in the last week of the same Gregorian calendar year.

The Gregorian date may vary between countries depending on the local sight ability of the new moon. Some expatriate Muslim communities follow the dates as determined for their home country, while others follow the local dates of their country of residence.

Muslims celebrate Eid with great pomp and show. They send greeting cards and gifts to their family friends and relatives. But nowadays we have a trend of sending Eid text messages. This has become the popular trend nowadays and an easy way to greet

What is the date for Eid Al-Fitr in 2013?

Eid Al-Fitr is expected to be on or around August 8th, 2013. The Fiqh Council of North America has announced that Eid will be on Thursday, August 8, 2013 based on "scientifically guaranteed astronomical calculations."

The hilal moon marking the end of Ramadan is not expected to be visible in most areas of the world, however, so many other countries will likely announce Eid to be on Friday, August 9, 2013.

According to actual sighting in each country Eid ul-Fitr 1434 AH: is on August 8, 2013 (Thursday) in Chile, and Polynesian Islands and August 9, 2013 (Friday) in the rest of the world except Japa. According to Ummul-Qura Calendar of Saudi Arabia Eid Al-Fitr will be on August 8, 2013 (Thursday).

But, the exact dates of Islamic holidays cannot be determined in advance, due to the nature of the Islamic lunar calendar. Estimates are based on expected visibility of the hilal (waxing crescent moon following a new moon) and may vary according to location.

Eid al-Fitr, عيد الفطر‎ ʻĪd al-Fiṭr, IPA: [ʕiːd al fitˤr], "festival of breaking of the fast", also called Feast of Breaking the Fast, the Sugar Feast, Bayram (Bajram), the Sweet Festival and the Lesser Eid, is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting (sawm). The religious Eid is a single day and Muslims are not permitted to fast that day.

Eid holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan. The day of Eid, therefore, falls on the first day of the month of Shawwal.

Eid is a day when Muslims around the world try to show a common goal of unity. The date for the start of any lunar Hijri month varies based on the observation of new moon by local religious authorities, so the exact day of celebration varies by locality. However in most countries, it is generally celebrated on the same day as Saudi Arabia.

Eid al-Fitr has a particular Salat (Islamic prayer) consisting of two Rakats (units) and generally offered in an open field or large hall. It may only be performed in congregation (Jama’at) and has an additional extra six Takbirs (raising of the hands to the ears while saying "Allāhu Akbar", literally "God is greater"), three of them in the beginning of the first raka'ah and three of them just before Ruku' in the second raka'ah in the Hanafi school of Sunni Islam.

Other Sunni schools usually have twelve Takbirs, seven in the first, and five at the begining of the second raka'ah. This Eid al-Fitr salat is,depending on which juristic opinion is followed, Fard (obligatory), Mustahabb (strongly recommended, just short of obligatory) or mandoob (preferable).

Muslims believe that they are commanded by God, as mentioned in the Quran, to
continue heir fast until the last day of Ramadan and pay the Zakat and fitra before offering the Eid prayers.

Eid al-Fitr Islamic Tradition

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. This has to do with the communal aspects of the fast, which expresses many of the basic values of the Muslim community; e.g., empathy for the poor, charity, worship, steadfastness, patience etc.

Fasting is also believed by some scholars to extol fundamental distinctions, lauding the power of the spiritual realm, while acknowledging the subordination of the physical realm.

Eid also teaches a Muslim to stay away from worldly desires and to focus entirely on the Lord and thank Him for his blessings.

It is a rejuvenation of the religion and it creates a stronger bond between the Muslim and his Lord. After the end of Ramadan, is a big celebration of Eid.

Eid Ul-Fitr History

Before the advent of Islam in Arabia, there is mention of festivals as well as some others among the Arabs. The Israelites had festivals as well, but as is evident from the Old Testament and other scriptures, these festivals related more to commemorating certain days of their history.

Eid al-Fitr was originated by the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It is observed on the first of the month of Shawwal at the end of the month of Ramadan, during which Muslims undergo a period of fasting.

According to certain traditions, these festivals were initiated in Madinah after the migration of Muhammad from Mecca. Anas reports:

When the Prophet arrived in Madinah, he found people celebrating two specific days in which they used to entertain themselves with recreation and merriment. He asked them about the nature of these festivities at which they replied that these days were occasions of fun and recreation. At this, the Prophet remarked that the Almighty has fixed two days [of festivity] instead of these for you which are better than these: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha

For Muslims, both the festivals of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are occasions of showing gratitude to God and remembering Him, and are an occasion of entertainment. ‘Aishah narrates that when on an Eid day her father Abu Bakr stopped young girls from singing, Muhammad said: Abu Bakr! [Let them sing]; every nation has an ‘id and [this day] is our
Eid.

Eid Mubarak wishes are very common and often accompanied by hugging after the Salat al Eid in Bangladesh and neighboring countries. In the Philippines, it is recognized as a legal Holiday, though the greeting of Eid Mubarak is gaining ground only recently. In Turkey, where 'Eid Mubarak' is not common at all, the synonymous phrase "Bayramınız mübarek olsun" is used instead, along with its more Turkicized counterpart, "Bayramınız kutlu olsun", both meaning exactly the same: "May your holiday be blessed". Along with Turkish people, the Bosnian Muslims also commonly say "Bajram Šerif Mubarek Olsun", the response is "Allah Raziola". Another common Eid greeting by Bosnian Muslims is "Bajram Barečula". In Pashtun areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Pashto Akhtar de nekmregha sha, meaning "may your festival be blessed" is common. Speakers of Arabic might also add "kul 'am wantum bikhair", which means "[May] you be well every year". In Indonesia, the most common expression is "Selamat Lebaran", Lebaran being an Indonesian name for Eid; whereas in Malaysia it is "Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri", Aidilfitri being the Malay transliteration for Eid ul-Fitr.

Throughout the Muslim world there are numerous other greetings for Eid ul-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr. The Companions of the Islamic prophet Muhammad used to say to each other when they met on Eid ul-Fitr: Taqabbalallâhu minnâ wa minkum (which means "[May] God accept from us and you [our
fasts and deeds]").

eToro Forex Investment Review

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Thu, 08 Nov 2012 05:45:00 +0000

eToro is a relatively new but fast-growing brokerage firm. With so many online trading platforms available nowadays, people are very quick to point fingers and yell “Forex scam” whenever things don’t go their way, even if their broker is really not to blame.

eToro is a good dealer for the beginner. The company seems to cater to the new trader in fact. The broker is about sharing information, not only in the news and analysis sense, but also between traders. The dealer even offers something called “OpenBook”, which is a social platform that allows traders to follow other traders. This way, you can start trading in the shadows of successful traders while you learn.

Regulated in Europe by CySec and and in the U.S., eToroUSA is a member of the NFA (ID: 0382918)
Known for their innovative beginner friendly platform and excellent customer support
Offer numerous tutorials, guides and a trading forum where traders can share their experiences and lessons learnt.

Make Money Online Easiest Ways

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Tue, 06 Nov 2012 07:17:00 +0000

The World Wide Web Internet is filled with opportunities to make money online. You can start a web-based service, become an affiliate marketer, complete consumer surveys, or even sell old items from your garage on the auction sites. Most of these opportunities do not require experience or large investments to start. The question remains, however, what is the easiest way to earn money online?

Out of the many opportunities available, the easiest way to EMO with little investment and little experience is with affiliate marketing. To become an affiliate marketer you simply need to find a product or service you wish to promote and you are ready to make money.

How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?

Affiliate marketing is the act of taking someone else product or service and promoting it through various means for a commission of the sales. There are literally millions of products available online to promote, and the world is your potential client.

Affiliate programs are free to join. Most affiliate marketers join an affiliate marketing group, which are also free, that offers a large selection of companies and products you can select to promote. The group will track your sales and commission, provide marketing materials such as text and picture links, and most offer training seminars to help their affiliates succeed. These programs are free because they are paid for by the companies desiring promotion of their products.

Once you have your affiliate ID, you can begin to promote your link. This can be accomplished in many different ways. You may wish to use a Pay Per Click (PPC) campaign to promote your link, you may post to classified sites, or you may wish to create a blog or information site about the product or service. Social networking has become the easiest way to promote a product, and many affiliate marketers only use social sites for this reason.

Many affiliates also promote their affiliate links offline as well. While this type of advertising does come at different costs, the return on investment is usually quite high.

Can You Make Money Online In Other Ways?

Many people have turned to freelance work as a way to make money online. There are several different freelance community sites that you can join and offer your professional services. Freelancers can bid on jobs in almost every category, including: web design, writing, consulting, virtual assisting, engineering, and computer programming.

Freelancing can be quite lucrative when you become established. However, it does take time to build a reputation online for providing quality work.

Online consumer panels or surveys also offer a great opportunity to make easy money online. You will need to join as many panels as possible, and be willing to quickly respond to their survey requests to generate a large income from this type of work. Surveys fill fast, so it is imperative to quickly respond.

Survey payments will vary on the length of the survey and the difficulty level. Payments can be very high for surveys that request follow up information or the evaluation of products. Many professional survey takers find that trying and evaluating new products before they enter the market is the best part of the job.

The Arabic term "Feast of the Sacrifice", ‘Eid ul-’Aḍḥā is borrowed into Indic languages such as Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati and Bengali and Austronesian languages such as Malay and Indonesian (the last often spelling it as Idul Adha or Iduladha). Another Arabic word for "sacrifice" is Qurbān (Arabic: قربان‎), which is borrowed into Dari Persian and Standard Persian as عید قربان Eyde Ghorbân, and Tajik Persian as Иди Қурбон (Idi Qurbon), into Kazakh as Құрбан айт (Qurban ayt), Uyghur as Qurban Heyit, and also into various Indic languages such as Bengali as রবানির ঈদ Korbanir Id. Other languages combined the Arabic word qurbān with local terms for "festival", as in Kurdish (Cejna Qurbanê), Pashto (د قربانۍ اختر da Qurbānəi Axtar), Chinese (古尔邦节 Gúěrbāng Jié), Malay and Indonesian (Hari Raya Korban, Qurbani), Filipino (Araw ng Pag-Sasakripisyo), Turkish (Kurban Bayramı), Turkmen (Gurban Baýramy), Azeri (Qurban Bayramı), Tatar (Qorban Bäyräme), Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian (Kurban bajram, Курбан бајрам), Macedonian (Курбан Бајрам), Albanian (Kurban Bajrami), and Russian (Курбан-байрам).

Eid al-Kabir, "the Greater Eid" (the "Lesser Eid" being Eid al-Fitr), is used in Yemen, Syria, and North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt). The term was borrowed directly into French as Aïd el-Kebir. Translations of "Big Eid" or "Greater Eid" are used in Pashto لوی اختر Loy Axtar, Kashmiri Baed Eid, Hindi and Urdu Baṛī Īd, Malayalam Bali Perunnal, and Tamil Peru Nāl.

Another name refers to the fact that the holiday occurs after the culmination of the Hajj (حج), or pilgrimage to Mecca (Makka). Such names are used in Malay and Indonesian (Hari Raya Haji "Hajj celebration day", Lebaran Haji), and in Tamil Hajji Peru Nāl.

In Urdu- and Hindi-speaking areas, the festival is also called Bakr Īd, stemming from the Urdu-Hindi word بکری bakrī, "goat", because of the tradition of sacrificing a goat in South Asia. That term was also borrowed into other languages, such as Tamil Bakr Eid Peru Nāl. Other local names include 宰牲节 Zǎishēng Jié ("Slaughter-livestock Festival") in Mandarin Chinese, Tfaska Tamoqqart in the Berber language of Djerba, Tabaski or Tobaski in Niger–Congo languages, Babbar Sallah in Nigerian languages and ciida gawraca in Somali.

Eid al-Adha has had other names outside the Muslim world. The name is often simply translated into the local language, such as English Feast of the Sacrifice, German Opferfest, Dutch Offerfeest, Romanian Sărbătoarea Sacrificiului and Hungarian Áldozati ünnep. In Spanish, it is known as the Fiesta del Cordero, the "Festival of the Lamb".

Eid al-Adha is the latter of two Eid holidays celebrated by Sunni and Shia Muslims, the former holiday being Eid al-Fitr. The basis for the Eid al-Adha comes from the 196th verse of the 2nd sura of the Quran. The word "Eid" appears once in the 5th sura of the Quran, with the meaning "solemn festival". The 3 days and 2 nights of Eid al-Adha are celebrated annually on the 10th, 11th and 12th day Dhu al-Hijjah (ذو الحجة), the twelfth and last month of the lunar Islamic calendar. In the international Gregorian calendar, the dates vary from year to year, drifting approximately 11 days earlier each year.

Like Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha begins with a Sunnah prayer of two rakats followed by a sermon (khuṭbah). Eid al-Adha celebrations start after the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia by Muslims worldwide, descent from Mount Arafat. The date is approximately 70 days (2 Months & 10 days) after the end of the month of Ramadan, i.e. Eid al-Fitr. Ritual observance of the holiday lasts until sunset of the 12th day of Dhu al-Hijjah.[8] Eid sacrifice may take place until sunset on the 13th Day. The days of Eid have been singled out in the Hadith as "days of remembrance". The days of Tashriq are from the Fajr of the 9th of Dhul Hijjah upto the Asr of the 13th of Dhul Hijjah (5 days and 4 nights). This equals 23 prayers: 5 on the 9th-12th which equal 20 and 3 on the 13th.

Who must attend EID Prayers

According to some fiqh (traditional Islamic law) (although there is some disagreement) Men compulsory; women optional Residents, which exclude travelers Those in good health, which excludes genuinely sick people

When Eid al-Adha prayer is performed

The Eid al-Adha prayer is performed anytime after the sun completely rises up to just before the entering of Zuhr time, on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. If the event of an excuse (eg. natural disaster), the prayer maybe delayed to the 11th of Dhul Hijjah and then to the 12th of Dhul Hijjah.

Eid Prayers Rituals

Muslims from the Ottoman Empire gather after Eid prayers to greet the Imam. The scholars differed concerning the ruling on Eid prayers. There are three scholarly points of view:

That Eid prayer is Sunnah mu’akkadah (recommended). This is the view of Imam Maalik and Imam al-Shaafa’i.
That it is a Fard Kifaya (communal obligation). This is the view of Imam Ahmad.
That it is Wajib on all Muslim men (a duty for each Muslim and is obligatory for men); those who do not do it with no excuse are sinning thereby. This is the view of Imam Abu Haneefah, and was also narrated from Imam Ahmad. Among those who favoured this view were Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah and al-Shawkaani.

Eid prayers must be offered in congregation. It consists of two rakats (units) with seven Takbirs in the first Raka'ah and five Takbirs in the second Raka'ah. For Sunni Muslims, Salat al-Eid differs from the five daily canonical prayers in that no adhan (Call to Prayer) or iqama (call) is pronounced for the two Eid prayers. However, Shi'ite Muslims may begin Salat al-Eid with adhan (Call to Prayer) with a third repetition of the line "Hayya ala salah" ("Come to prayer") and iqama (call). The Salaat (prayer) is then followed by the Khutbah, or sermon, by the Imam. At the conclusion of the prayers and sermon, the Muslims embrace and exchange greetings with one other (Eid Mubarak), give gifts (Eidi) to children, and visit one another. Many Muslims also take this opportunity to invite their non-Muslims friends, neighbours, co-workers and classmates to their Eid festivities to better acquaint them about Islam and Muslim culture.

HAPPY EID Eid-al-Adha also known as Eid-al-Zuha is one of the important festivals of the Muslims. Eid-al-Adha is celebrated on the 10th day of the 12th month, Dhu a-Hijjah. It occurs after the Hajj pilgrimage, which, is the fifth pillar of Islam, undertaken by the Muslims. According to the holy book Quran, the Bakri Id is a tribute paid to Abraham’s wish to sacrifice his only son Ishmael.

Eid Ul Adha Mubarak to all Muslims

Muslims are going to Animal Markets to buy Cows, Goats, Sheep and other animals for sacrificing on Eid that is done in memory of Prophet Ibrahim A.S Sacrifice on every Eid Al Adha. Shopping for Eid is also in full swing. People are buying new dresses and other items for the Eid. Females are preparing to make various delicious dishes with the meat of Animals.

"O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!" So We gave him the good news of a boy, possessing forbearance. And when (his son) was old enough to walk and work with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I see in vision that I offer you in sacrifice: Now see what is your view!" (The son) said: "O my father! Do what you are commanded; if Allah wills, you will find me one practising patience and steadfastness!" So when they both submitted and he threw him down upon his forehead, We called out to him saying: O Ibraheem! You have indeed fulfilled the vision; surely thus do We reward those who do good. Most surely this was a manifest trial. And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice. And We perpetuated (praise) to him among the later generations. "Peace and salutation to Abraham!" Thus indeed do We reward those who do right. Surely he was one of Our believing servants. As a reward for this sacrifice, God then granted Abraham the good news of the birth of his second son, Is-haaq (Isaac): And We gave him the good news of Is-haaq, a prophet from among the righteous.

Abraham had shown that his love for God superseded all others: that he would lay down his own life or the lives of those dearest to him in submission to God's command. Muslims commemorate this ultimate act of sacrifice every year during Eid al-Adha.

While Eid al-Adha is always on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year since the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar and the Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar. The lunar calendar is approximately eleven days shorter than the solar calendar. Each year, Eid al-Adha (like other Islamic holidays) falls on one of two different Gregorian dates in different parts of the world, because the boundary of crescent visibility is different from the International Date Line.

Eid ul Fitr Greetings Eid Mubarak Ramadan Greetings

Eid Mubarak to all readers. I hope that you have the most blessed holiday and year ever.

Eid ul-Fitr, Eid al-Fitr, Id-ul-Fitr, or Id al-Fitr (Arabic: ‎عيد الفطر ‘Īdu l-Fiṭr), often abbreviated to Eid, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting (sawm). Eid is an Arabic word meaning "festivity," while Fiṭr means "breaking (the fast)". The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the thirty days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan. The first day of Eid, therefore, falls on the first day of the month Shawwal.

On this special day, the Muslims indulge in traditional activities aside from celebrating with their dear ones. Read on to know about Eid Ul Fitr celebrations in different parts of the world.

United States: Eid Ul Fitr is not declared as a federal holiday in the United States. On this day, the Muslims get up early to offer prayers at the mosque or on their outdoor space. They get new clothes for this occasion and decorate their homes with special lighting. The Muslims also offer money to the poor on the Eid Ul Fitr.

The Eid Ul Fitr is the day when the Muslims in United States take delight in preparing recipes and sharing a special meal with their friends and family. They also thank God for all the good things they’ve received in their lives.

India: The Eid Ul Ftr is considered as a national holiday in India. People gather at the Jama Masjid mosque in New Delhi to offer their prayers to God. On this special day, the Muslims try out different recipes including sweet delicacies. Most of them indulge in Eid Ul Fitr celebrations by preparing a special dish – the ‘Siwaiyaan’. This recipe is actually made of toasted sweet vermicelli noodles, dried fruits, and milk. This is the day when the Muslims send Eid Ul Fitr cards to their loved ones and convey their best wishes on this festive occasion.

United Arab Emirates (UAE): The people of UAE indulge in Eid Ul Fitr celebrations with great enthusiasm. They usually wear white dresses with a long traditional ‘Thoub’ and ‘Ogal’. The ‘Ogal’ is a scarf having check patterns; it is attached with a black turban. Wearing these white dresses, the people offer prayers at the mosque. They also offer gifts to their loved ones on this special day. On the Eid Ul Fitr, festive fairs are held throughout the United Arab Emirates. The women paint their hands with henna and prepare sweets to gift to their dear ones on this day.

Turkey: The Eid Ul Fitr in Turkey is known as the Ramazan Bayrami. Since it’s a public holiday, therefore, educational institutions and government offices remain closed during the festival. As in other countries, people in Turkey dress up in special clothes for the Eid and visit the cemetery to pay respect to those who’ve passed away.

An important celebration of the Eid Ul Fitr is kissing the right hand of a senior person and placing it on one’s forehead while wishing that the person enjoys the festival with mirth and joy. The kids convey their wishes to their dear ones by visiting their relatives’ houses. In return they’re gifted with candies and sweets that they love to savor.

Canada: Eid Ul Fitr is not a national public holiday in Canada. However, the Muslims participate in Eid Ul Fitr celebrations and enjoy the festival with great enthusiasm. They wake up early in the morning and offer outdoor prayers. Just like the Muslims worldwide, the Muslims in Canada also wear the finest clothes and decorate their homes with special lighting. People gather together in Ottawa to celebrate the festive occasion.

Ideas to Celebrate the Eid Ul Fitr

You may celebrate the Eid Ul Fitr by shopping around for new clothes. Go for a gift exchange with your family members and friends. An interesting idea is to engrave your dear ones’ names on each ‘Kufi’ (round cap) and let them choose a cap to find out to whom that person should offer a gift.

An important part of Eid Ul Fitr celebrations is to express warm wishes to your neighbors and invite them for a meal. An interesting idea is to celebrate the Eid Ul Fitr with poor children. The Muslims are actually advised to offer 3 kilograms of one’s daily ration or its equivalent cash to the poor on this occasion.

Nowadays the word HYIP has become a very common term in the cyber arena, even though a lot of people still have never heard of it before. It's even caught the attention of government financial departments to ponder on. Even the federal securities are talking about HYIPs. So what’s the big story behind this four letter word ? Let’s find out through this detailed report, which is based on what I've learned from other experienced investors, some of which have several years of field experience in this arena. What does 'HYIP' mean?HYIP, simply means “High Yield Investment Program”. It’s exactly what it sounds like. Some can give you up Between 100% to 2000% return on your investment per month. This industry is growing by storm everywhere on the internet. There have never been investment opportunities such as this to give such a high profit within the shortest time. There are many different HYIPs on the internet with many different methods of payment and repayment. Never invest in every single HYIP that is out thereWhat do these HYIP Companies do? Most of these companies will follow a unique investment strategy to gain a high level of profit. They manage their/your investment in the most efficient way to ensure the profit return for their clients. Some of them will invest in the stock market, others in property, bonds or Foreign Exchange (Forex). Most of the time a company will use a combination of investment opportunities to generate such a high profit margin. Each company usually has their own unique investment strategy. Often the best programs go private and close their doors to new members after they reach the maximum figure their traders can manage profitably. On the contrary, "ponzi" and pyramid scams will not close to new members until they fail. This is because they are using new members "investments" to pay interest to previous members, until the program becomes unstable or runs out of suckers, and then the promoters blow with the dough. Is there any risk in HYIPs? There's risk in any business. If you can’t take a risk, then you can't expect to gain either. The bigger the risk, the bigger the return. These HYIP companies manage their investments in the high-risk arena and that’s why they also make such a high profit. So there's always a risk of losing money, which can happen with any business. The same is true if you put your money in the stock market on your own. That’s why it’s always best to invest a comfortable amountHow Much Can I Make? It depends entirely on how much you invest (obviously the more you invest, the more you make), and the daily percentage of the program (higher daily percentage = more money daily). How Much Can I Lose? Again, you can lose as much as you invest. Therefore remember the golden rule of HYIP: ONLY INVEST WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD TO LOSE. How Much Can I Invest? Depends on the company. Some companies allow you to invest from $1, and most have no upper limit. Check the specific company for more details. How do you invest in these programs? Most HYIP’s use different types of e-currency as their way of accepting funds from investors. E-gold is the most used e-currency, but there are also other e-currencies such as Evocash, Paypal, Intgold, Netpay, Stormpay and many others. Nowadays, e-currency has become a very popular way of exchanging money online. It's also used by various merchandise websites as an accepted payment method. Given the fact that the HYIP industry is a very risky place, most people tend to be very reluctant when comes to investing in HYIPs, even if they're legit. There have been cases where people have thought they’ve found an incredible opportunity and happily invested their whole fortune. When the programs later went out of business, the consequences have been devastating. Considering both positive and negative aspects of HYIP investing, the conclusion is IF the selection of HYIPs is done properly, it can be extremely profitable. If you enter into any of the programs on the net, it's of your own choosing; realizing that all HYIPs are an arena of high risk. It would be presumptuous to assume ALL programs and opportunities are going to reward you with a return indefinitely; some will fail due to the nature and volatility of this arena. But, sow enough seeds and many will grow. Long-term protection lies in a simple strategy; D-I-V-E-R-S-I-F-Y with little bits seeded in the best programs you choose to enter. NO BIG SPENDS in any one program! In other words, don't put all your eggs in one basket.I’m only going to show you some HYIP, Since it’s the only one's I have invested in, and earned a Profit on each occasion I have invested. It would be unfair to List anymore, since I have no Reliable Knowledge of them.
