"Back of house is the part of the hotel that customers never see. All being well they never even have to think about it either. Luggage invisibly appears, rooms are kept spotless, restaurants serve dishes as if out of thin air, and all the staff you do happen to come into contact with are charming, smiling and efficient to the core.

But behind the scenes frantic activity and heroic organization within cramped quarters are the norm, and nowhere is this more true than for the housekeeping department. The life blood of the hotel, for if it sells nothing else the main reason to stay in one, and that is to have a room to sleep in. Housekeeping is responsible for those all-important first impressions (cleanliness and order, upkeep and maintenance). A successful housekeeping team can do as much if not more to influence the profit margins of the hotel than any other department – yet its role and staff members are often looked down upon as ‘just a bunch of cleaners'. Lets turn back the cover on the job that is less glorified, so let me, Manish Jain, unravel the myths behind the role, train future housekeepers and instill a sense of pride in a job without which no hotel could run."

Presenting Kazzam, a smart software designed for the modern day Accommodations operations manager. Kazzam is designed keeping in mind the various activities a housekeeper is responsible for and generates analysis empowering the Manager with accurate data and suggests parameters for improvement to bring the hotel to a Zero defect level. It also assists in cost analysis to ensure expenses are maintained within budgets. Kazzam is a unique products that prompts about training to be done, discrepancies in inventories, defaulting rooms for weekly/ fortnightly/ monthly/ quarterly activities, Strengths and weakness of the individual or department as a whole. It also helps in reward and recognition planning of the top performers and generates KRAs for individuals assisting in appraisal system.
Mentioned below are its key features –

Soft service analysis :
For improving on soft service skills of the department, Kazzam provides a unique system of analyzing weakness by auditing team members on their skill sets. A set of soft skills are defined by the management on which every team members is audited on a daily basis. The records for the same are entered into the system and thus begins a journey of self improvement based on actual facts.

As shown in the screen shot above the supervisor or manager audits the team member on skills such as dusting, bed making, bathroom cleaning, supply placement etc on a scale of 1 to 5 (one being the lowest score) based on the actual condition of the room. It is suggested to conduct one audit per team member per day to derive at best results. The system prompts on the average score of the individual for the audit and accumulates data for analyzing strengths/ weaknesses.

The manager/ director of rooms can view the individual audits done for a team member for the month with the average scores for each soft service parameter. The system also highlights the weakness of the individual which need to be addressed for optimizing his/her performance.

By auditing individual team members on their soft service skill set Kazzam also derives at the departmental performance for the month highlighting the strengths and weakness which can be viewed for any period of the year as shown in the screen shot above.

The system also highlights audits missed for a particular day for an individual to ensure an even and realistic data is collected for the individual spread over the month, as shown in the screen shot below.

Training needs:

As shown above, Kazzam then analyses the audit data and highlights the five weakest skill sets of the department for the last month, under the training section. It then assists the manager with the mandatory training to be planned as per last months data suggesting the team members who have performed poorly under those parameters. It also assists the manager to schedule other training and calculates man hours. Kazzam records all training conducted and generates reports for any/all training done for any particular month/ period of the year as shown in the screen shot below -

Hardware defects:

Kazzam also assists the manager in the Herculean task of maintaining defect list for all hardware related concerns of the rooms , which can be predefined in the hardware defect list.

This audit is conducted by the supervisor/ manager listing down the parameters under three sections – to be replaced, in working condition ad excellent condition. The system also prompts about the rooms missed out under the missed audit reports to ensure all rooms are covered for the month.

The manager can then view all such defects room wise /floor wise / defect wise/ category of defect wise. It also assists in PPM planning by listing out updated records for the individual room/ floor etc.

Cost analysis :

For any manager to run his/her department successfully he/ she needs to be completely aware of the financial position of the department in all respects. Kazzam assists in maintaining and generating records for Guest and cleaning supplies which can be also viewed as cost per occupied room in individual supply or comprehensive manner. As per the screen shot below the desk attendant enters all supplies issued for he department for the day/month -

This record can then be analyzed to find out the cost per occupied room for cleaning/ guest supplies. This ensures that the manager is aware of the departments performance and any discrepancies can be addressed immediately.

Also a master list can be generated for the month/ specified period to keep track of the overall costing as shown below. The same is generated in an excel sheet for ease of maintaining and circulating records.

To ensure that the department does not exceed the budgeted supply cost, a worksheet is provided for the manager wherein he/she can calculate the supply cost for the coming month by entering approximate requirement and forecasted romnights.

Inventory Management :

The biggest challenge for any hotel is to maintain inventories. Kazzam assists the manager by providing an inventory management feature wherein all articles can be accounted for. It provides an option to list N number of categorize with items under it.

The physical inventory records can be entered into the system to generate discrepancies/Maintain records for a month/selected time frame.

Activity Scheduling :
Kazzam is designed to assist the housekeeper in keeping track of the cleaning activities planned for the rooms on a Weekly/ fortnightly/ monthly/ quarterly bases. The manager configures the activities under the sections listed which in turn need to be addressed by the supervisor and updated in the system for the particular room.

The manager can then identify the defaulting rooms for the particular activity and take corrective measures to ensure compliance.

The system is designed in an absolutely user friendly manner and data can be configured with utmost ease under the admin page. Screen shot of the admin page is shown below-

Kazzam also assists Corporate housekeepers by letting them access information of two or more hotels to analyse performances and suggest corrective measures to be taken under the Super Admin access.

There are a lot of other features that would ease the workload of the HK Manager and empower him/her. In a nut shell Kazzam intelligently highlights the following -
a) The quality of cleanliness both for individuals and for the department as a whole.
b) The major/minor maintenances to be carried out in the rooms.
c) The SWOT analysis of room cleanliness.

The Suites

Each suite at the Ashland Creek Inn is a world unto itself with both a private entrance and private deck overlooking a picture-perfect, park-like setting. Reminiscent of an old-world hotel, all ten suites were personally appointed by innkeeper Graham Sheldon with rare antiques and artifacts brought back from his extensive travels to exotic locations around the world. Named for their inspiration, suites include Caribe, Canton, Copenhagen, Devon, Edinburgh, Marrakech, Matsu, Normandy, Sienna and Taos.

Each suite showcases at least one signature museum-quality piece. The luxuriously-appointed bathroom of the Marrakech Suite is entered through a ten-foot, hand-carved door that once adorned an historic Moroccan villa. The Sienna Suite features original Italian decor including antique photography that Sheldon found in the bottom of a forgotten box at Bolognese antique shop. TheCopenhagen Suite is a tribute to mid-century Danish design with an authentic hand-made Hans Wegner Peacock chair identical to those on exhibit at the Smithsonian and the Museum of Modern Art.

Still an under-utilized business tool within the industry, Social Media can enhance a hotel’s outreach if implemented and managed properly. We’re very pleased to have veteran hotelier Martin Kubler join us for a two-part discussion on the implementation and use of Social Media.

Is it expensive for a hotel to get started in Social Media?

On the contrary - getting started in Social Media is deceptively cheap and easy; winning, on the other hand, isn’t. Other than time, it doesn’t cost anything to create a Facebook Page or a Twitter account; however, without a clear strategy and well defined goals, a hotel’s social media presence is virtually useless.

I would advise hotels looking to get started in Social Media to do their homework first in order to avoid wasting time and making (potentially) expensive mistakes later on.

Social Media does not exist in a vacuum, but needs to be part of the hotel’s overall marketing and communication strategy and a hotel’s social media strategy should align with its overall business goals, e.g. it needs to take into account the hotel’s target market(s) and business segmentation. A hotel with a strong corporate audience from English-speaking countries may want to focus on different social media platforms than a resort hotel with mostly leisure guests from the Far East.

Hotels should also be clear about what they want to achieve through social media. Do they mainly want to use it for marketing purposes, to communicate with guests, or to open new markets and sales channels?

Time spent putting together and fine-tuning a suitable social media strategy and setting achievable and measurable goals, is time well spent.

Is a presence in Social Media of benefit? Or much ado about nothing?

Social Media is real. It’s not a fad or a bubble waiting to burst. It’s definitely here to stay and set to get even bigger and more social. It is fundamentally changing the way people interact, communicate, and consume and share information. It democratizes communications (virtually everyone can be a writer, director, or commentator) and it increases transparency.

Consequently social media is fast becoming a necessity for hotels. More and more guests use it to communicate with hotels or to find information about special offers and exclusive deals. Social Media activities such as postings to Google+ Pages or blogging also positively impact search engine results and can refer considerable traffic to a hotel’s website.

In today’s crowded marketplace, travelers are increasingly turning to Social Media when deciding where to book. Many consult online review websites such as TripAdvisor, others may consult their Facebook or Twitter networks to garner recommendations on where to stay or what to do in a certain destination. Tapping into such conversations can be extremely beneficial for hotels and can help them to gain an edge over competitors, find out more about guests (e.g. their likes and dislikes – information which ultimately helps to provide better guest service), and get insights into the latest trends.

Is the market ready for booking rooms through a hotel’s Facebook Page?

I believe that the market is ready for bookings through Social Media. While it may be some time until bookings through Facebook or Twitter make up a considerable percentage of a hotel’s revenue, now is definitely the right time to start laying the foundations.

Social Media offers an alternative sales channel, which can assist hotels to increase the number of direct bookings and save them commission payments. Many Internet users already spend considerable time on Social Media platforms, so it makes sense to offer booking facilities on Facebook and other Social Media websites. According to Nielsen’s “State of the Media: The Social Media Report”, Americans, for example, spent 53.5 billion minutes on Facebook in May 2011 alone. Hotel’s should start thinking “convenience”, i.e. if travelers are already spending so much time on Social Media platforms, why not make it as easy as possible for them to book a room via, say, Facebook or LinkedIn?

Lastly, hotel’s should not overlook the considerable importance of Social Media when it comes to “auxiliary” revenue. Travelers in many markets may still be hesitant to book high-ticket items such as room nights or conferences via Facebook or other Social Media sites, but they are far more open to “upselling”. In other words, hotels should aim to establish connections and start conversations with their audiences before guests reach the property – done correctly, this can yield valuable information which can be used to upsell products or services. For example, a guest might ask about details of the room type he or she has booked on a hotel’s Facebook Page or request information about sightseeing in the local area. It only takes a minute to suggest an upgrade to a suite or to mention how great the hotel’s sightseeing tours are. Social Media allows (potential) guests to engage with hotels in their own time and as a result, travelers are far more likely to listen to what a hotel has to say than during the traditional “check-in spiel” when guests usually only listen half-heartedly, because they want to reach their rooms as quickly as possible.

Can Social Media be used to facilitate guest communities?

Social Media is a great tool to help building, maintaining, and communication with guest communities. It allows hotels to stay in touch with guests even after they have checked out and it is also possible to quickly built social communities for special guest segments. For example: How about creating a Facebook group for members of your hotel’s loyalty program or for your long-stay guests? You’ll be opening up an additional communication and sales channel and ensure that your guests are treated perfectly on-line and off-line. Does your hotel work a lot with travel agents? Create a Facebook or LinkedIn group for your travel trade contacts and close it to the general public. In a matter of minutes, you can create a platform that allows you to communicate with your most important bookers and clients in a special forum, listen to their suggestions, answer their questions, and present them with your latest offers (outside the confines of all “rate parity” issues).

Social Media also allows you to connect with travel bloggers and frequent travelers and to entice such clients to stay with you. Think “network” and use the Social Media multiplier effect to maximize the value of individual relationships and their networks.

Everybody knows that Social Media is an extremely fast medium. Use it to your advantage and create platforms, groups, and for a, for special interest segments in minutes. For example, use LinkedIn to find professionals attending a large congress in your city or engage via Facebook or Twitter with sports fans who are travelling to your locality to watch a big sports event.

World’s Largest Collection of Vintage Liquors To Be Sold for US$8 Million!

The Old Liquors collection of 250 years old cognac, whisky, port, armagnac, madeira and liqueurs holds over 5000 very rare, historic and unique bottles.

The Netherlands national Bay van der Bunt has claimed the title of owning the “world’s largest collection of old liquors”. Sadly, however, he’s willing to relinquish the title for the price $8 million (US). The historic collection holds over 5,000 bottled liquors to include 250 years old cognac, whisky, armagnac, port, madeira and rare liqueurs.

The 63-year-old Dutch speaking collector, who oddly doesn’t drink not the precious elixirs himself, has over the years dedicated his life to finding the rarest and finest spirits on earth. Many of the cognacs, dating back to 1789, the year of the French revolution and the inauguration of George Washington as the 1^st President of the United States.

According to Bay, he and his wife do not have any children or potential heirs who would be able to take care of their prized collection.

“So sadly, I have to let it go,” he said with a sense of remorse.

“Over the last 35 years, I frequented worldwide auctions like Christie’s and Sotheby’s. I bought from famous restaurants like Maxim’s and La Tour d’Argent in Paris and Le Cirque in New York when they thinned-out their cellars. Some cognacs even belonged to the estate of the Duke of Windsor,” he added.

Noting that it would take another two to three generations to gather a collection like this and assuming you would still be able to find such rare liquors, Bay said he inherited some of the liquor cache from father, who had inherited from his father (Bay’s grandfather).

“My grandfather had hundreds of bottles which my father passed on to me, so collecting is something I have grown up with,” said Bay, who for over 10 years has shared his passion with the world through his website www.oldliquors.com.

Admitting he never intend to sell his liquor collection, Bay sadly said: “But now age is forcing me to do so.”

However, he’s hoping for a collector who shares his passion to take over the entire collection, which contains many bottles of the last remaining in the world, which makes them very unique objects to have.

Otherwise, the rare spirits may find their way to connoisseurs, exclusive restaurants and hotels or even royalty through selected channels.

“Collecting cognacs and old liquors was very time consuming and cost a fortune, but it proves to be the best financial investment I have ever made,” admitted Bay.

150th Accor hotel in Brazil

Three major franchise agreement for the construction of 25 ibis budget in Brazil
Among those expansion projects, Accor has recently signed franchise agreements with three local
partners (Atrio, Souza Maria and Martins Hotéis), for the development of 25 ibis budget (2,400 rooms) in the
country. The total amount invested by these partners sums up to BRL 200 million. Those hotels will open in
the next four years and will meet the demand for business tourism and hotel management in small and
medium sized cities, with a population of 100 to 500 thousand inhabitants. ibis budget Sertãozinho should be
the first to open its doors in the first half of 2013.

Thailand’s newest ibis hotel is now open in Hua Hin
