I think that nowadays a lot of people experienced the AMOLED quality of the smartphones that use this technology and again a lot of people heard at least about the super Smart TV from Samsung, the 55D8000. Well, now you can have it both together: the beyond HD image quality of the AMOLED integrated in a Samsung TV.

The Super OLED TV from Samsung is due this autumn and is said to be a 55inch, smart TV, powered a dual-core CPU. So, this 14MP egg-shaped camera is capable of taking 360° photos of anything you want just by the push of a button. Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

The best Android tablet yet, boasting all-round excellence, but still isn't a match for the iPad 2

Android tablets have come a long way since the days of bodged smartphone OSes and horrid resistive screens, but there hasn't been much development since the first Honeycomb tablets hit the shelves in spring 2011. That's about to change, however, with the new Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime.

This is the follow up to the original Transformer, and is a huge improvement on its design. Gone is the cheap pasticky finish of the original, to be replaced by a much slimmer, sexier body. The new Transformer bears the same "spun" aluminium finish as the firm's sleek Zenbooks, and it looks and feels lovely.

It's as thin as the market leaders, and very light with it too: the tablet on its own weighs 594g. Physically the new Transformer cedes no ground to its competitors; which you choose will come down to personal taste. Of course, half the point of buying the Transformer is its ingenious keyboard dock, a feature you'll find nowhere else. It has also had a redesign to match the tablet with keys that have less travel and a firmer base.

The dock mechanism feels as solid and long lasting, engaging with a positive click and moving with a smooth, cultured hinge action. Combine that with it's booster battery and a USB port to connect input peripherals or USB thumb drivers, and you have a strong package.

Handsome although the Prime undoubtedly is, the main attraction is what's under the hood. This tablet is the first to feature the new generation oftablet processors - Nvidia's Tegra 3 - witch brings a number of significant advancements over the dual-core Tegra 2.

The headline figure is clearly the quad-core 1.3GHz processing power, but that dosen't reveal the full story. Technically, Tegra 3 has five cores - and it's the fifth core that really makes the difference.

Nvidia calls this the "companion" core. It's low power - running at only 500MHz - and the Transformer Uses it most of the time. White standby, syncing email and messages, running low-intensity background tasks and reading web pages, it's the companion core doing all the work. It can even deal with local video playback once the initial load has taken place.

The only time those four 1.3GHz cores fire up is during high-intensity tasks such as gaming and HD video streaming, lunching apps and loading web pages. The rest of the time, they're idle, allowing the companion core to get on with the majority of the work.

Additionally, Assus puts control over clock speed under user control: "Balanced" and "Buttery Saver" modes allow you to manually turn down the wick on the processor, while a "Super IPS+" switch encourages you to use the brightest screen setting only in fierce sunlight.

The idea is to provide power at the same time as long battery life, so it was with interest that we enbarked upon our battery test. This involves looping a low-resolution podcast video until the battery runs flat, timing how long it takes.

The first test, on the tablet portion only, and with the software setting pushed to its highest setting, saw the tablet last a slightly disappointing 6hrs 50 mins - somewhat down on the manufacturer's claimed 12 hours, and far short of the iPad2.

To get a feel for the maximum potential battery life, we ran the test in Battery Saver mode, which gave us a far more respectable 10hrs 8mins. Finally we added the base, which extended battery life to 18 hrs 5mins in Battery Saver mode - longer than the original Transformer, which lasted 15hrs 43mins connected to its base. All in all it's remarkable performance, expecially with the extra power on tap.

The performance part of the equation is more difficult to gauge. In theory the Transformer Prime's Tegra 3 has all-comers beaten, but in benchmarks the advantage wasn't clear cut.

It started by blitzing the SunSpider test with a time of 1,762ms. That's faster than any other device we've come across, but it doesn't win by a huge margin. The dual-core Motorola Xoom 2 was close at 1,931ms , the iPad 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 a litle behind this.

On the other hand, stress test loaded in an average of 17.6 seconds, slower than the dual-core Xoom 2's time of 14.3 seconds and the iPad 2's 7.7 seconds.

In real-world usage, the benefits are equally unclear. When flicking between Android desktops and menus, this is the smoothest and most responsive tablet to date. Planning around web pages and scrolling up and down, however, reveals a slight hesitancy. The lack of responsiveness is noticeable when you compare the device side by side with an iPad 2.

On area the grunt of Tegra 3 shows is embedded high-resolution video streaming. On the YouTube desktop site, for instance, 1080p version of the Big Buck Bunny clip played smoothly; it stuttered badly on dual-core tablets.

However, we suspect the full benefit of Tegra 3 will only become apparent when games optimised for the new chip begin to appear in largest numbers. First-person shooter Shadowgun is one of the early examples, showing slightly improved textures on the Prime over the Motorola Xoom, although gameplay was smooth on both.

The final priece of the jigsaw is the display, which is simply stunning. Asus uses similar IPS technology to Apple, and it's gorgeous. Maximum brightness is superb at 584cd/m - the hightness we've measured on any tablet.

Colours leap out with superb vibrancy - at least on a par with the iPad 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 - and although the glossy screen picks up fingerprints at an alarming rate, the extra brightness means it's pretty readable, even in bright outdoor conditions.

The 8-megapixel camera on the rear of the Prime, meanwhile, has the beating of every other tablet on the market both in terms of stills and 1080p video. In good light pictures are crisp, colourful, and boast good detail.

If we've honest, Tegra 3 came a little bit of a disappointment. We had been hoping for iPad-beating levels of responsiveness, smoothness and battery life. The Prime doesn't quite offer that, and although the new chip does boost HD video and the potential for high-end gaming, the companion core setup seems to compromise some aspects of performance.

However, the rest of the package is much more likeable. It's an improvement over the original in most respects, with better battery life, a superb screen, a good camera and much slicker design.

It's good value, too. The 32GB Wi-Fi keyboard and tablet bundle is £499; the 32GB Galaxy Tab 10.1 is the same price, you can't buy the tablet on its own, though, which dampens its appeal.

So the Prime isn't perfect, but it does edge in front of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 on value, connectivity and all-round performance. It's our new favourite Android tablet - and a hint of things to come.

Allview P2Alldro - Full Review

Today we continue our review on the Allview P2 Alldro. If on the first part we covered the first impressions on the phone, today we will talk about a more detailed information on the smartphone.

As we said before and you probably new from the video, the Allview P2 Alldro is a dual-sim , Android 2.3 Gingerbread, smartphone. You can use 2 sims simultaneously to receive or to make calls. When entering the dial-up menu you can choose from what sim to make your call by pressing one of the two green, dial, buttons on the screen. If you are talking at the phone from one sims and someone calls you on the other, that persons will receive a busy line or it will go direct to your voice mail. When you wish to send a message the operator selected by the phone will be the one on sim1, if you like to change that, it’s very simple, just tap the operator name on the upper left side of the screen and you can select the second.

A thing to remember is that the battery doesn’t not suffer from the use of the dual-sim mode, lasting you for a great lot of time.

The Gingerbread version of the Android installed works very well with the P2 Alldro’s processor (600MHz) and RAM’s (256MB) meaning that the smartphone is both fast and powerful. We have tested some apps and games that are used day by day by people and we are very proud of how this Romanian budget phone reacted. It supports all type of files (.docx, .doc, .ppt., .pdf, mp3, mp4 etc).

You may find a little bit of trouble loging in to the Android Market, saying that the phone is not recognize, but with 5 min of google-ing you can solve the problem. The Allview company has its own market, where you may not find the latest apps, but you will find the most used Android applications, most of them being for free.

The Allview’s P2 Alldro 5Mp camera is pretty cool. It has autofocus, smile detection and even Panorama which is really cool and not a lot of phones offer this. The quality of the images is high, this even though the camera has no flash. You can zoom in on the picture or on the camera and still the image has the pixel-free status and details are very well preserved.

We must say that the quality of the voice (your own heard by the person at the end of the line and the one of the person you are talking to) is not in any way disformed, on the contrary, it’s quite HD.

As we said in the video, the P2 Alldro comes with a pair of hands-free, classic design, but does the job very well, a USB to micro USB cable that is used to charge the phone also, a socket adapter and the user’s manual and guarantee certificate.

In the end, the Allview P2 Alldro is more than a budget smartphone (it cost’s around 200€), it’s a smartphone that can be tough competition for many phone with bigger names written on them.

Motorola Xoom 2

The original Motorola Xoom was the first of the Android tablets, and had to bear the huge expectations of a fladgling industry. Alas, when it finally arrived, it just couldn't live up to the hype. If anything, the rush to be first was its undoing, as several more polished Android tablets bettered it only weeks later. So Motorola has taken its time to follow up the Xoom with a thinner, lighter sequel, and that patience looks to have paid dividends.

The Xoom 2 is only 2.8mm thick and weights 599g - both almost identical to the iPad 2 - and its corners are angled gently downwards, both to stop them digging into your palms and to give the tablet a very slight octagonal shape. It's a distinctive look that won widespread approval in the PC Pro office; in a neat touch, the packaging has its corners chopped off to match.

The rear is made of grey aluminium in the centre, but with rubberised grip areas at either side and along the bottom, so it's comfortable to hold. The only buttons are concealed round the back, just where your right-hand fingertips are likely to rest. It isn't too bad once you're used to it, but changing the colume or waking the Xoom 2 from sleep can be awkward as you grope blindly for the right button.

Still, it keeps the front clean and leaves the 10.1 in display to soak up all the attention. It's a 1,280 x 80 TFT with a bright and crisp picture that leaps out you. We measured the maximum brightness at 478cd/m, Combine that with a decent 800:1 contrast ratio and it's among the better tablet screens we've used. Its colours don't quite have the vibrancy of the iPad 2 or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, but viewed along it's perfectly good.

There's a 1.3-megapixel webcam above the screen, and a 5-megapixel camera around the back that can also capture 720p video. Using Honeycomb's camera app we took a range of test shots and videos, and the results were generally good. It captured plenty of detail in a variety of lighting conditions, although shots were a bit washed out and colours lacked punch. There's also no tap-to-focus, which is irritating with close-up shots.

The Xoom's internals are impressive. It has a 1.2 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 chip and 1GB of RAM, but we were a little put off by the Xoom 2's initial sluggishness in menus. After a few hours to bed in, though, the juddering vanished, leaving a very capable table. It handled the most demanding games we threw at it without a hitch, including the cutting-edge shadowgun, and raced through the Android benchmarks: it scored a healthy 1,779 in the quadrant testm and took 1,931 ms to complete the SunSpider JavaScrips benchmark, both of which are among the fastest we've seen.

Motorola has squeezed an impressive battery inside that svelte chassis. We set it running our usual tablet benchmark - with Wi-Fi off, medium brightness and a video running on loop - and the Xoom 2 lasted for 10hrs 54 mins. It can't match the ludicrous stamina of an iPad 2, and it's disappointingly down from the 12hrs 49mins of the original Xoom, but it's still longer than any other Android tablet we've tested.

Although we're all eagerly awaiting Ice Cream Sandwich, the Xoom 2 is still on Android 3.2, but it's among the first tablets to benefit from Google's new tiled Android Market interface. It's a vast improvement, with plenty of room for staff and editors recommendations. and the ability to properly promote new and popular apps in a way that looks far more modern than before.

As for bundled software, you get a link to an app called Dijit, witch works in conjunction with the discreet IR emitter on the top edge to control TVs and other living room equipment. The setup is similar to that on Sony's Tablet S. There's also a micro-HDMI output on the bottom to hook up a TV directly. Motorola's MotoCast app lets you easily stream media from a PC, and if you're after a tablet for business use, Motorola has also included Citrix Receiver and GoToMetting. There's even an optional stylus for jotting down quick notes and sketches.

If it all sounds rosy, we do have a few concerns. We reviewed the 16GB model, but there's no larger capacity version just yet. There are microSD and SIM slots under a flap on the bottom edge, but both have been filled in to prevent use - presumably we'll eventually see a 3G Xoom 2, but blocking your route to additional storage is a little petty. And the Xoom 2 costs almost as an iPad 2, with this 16GB model priced at £380 inc VAT.

That leaves us in a quandary. This is undeniably the most physically desirable Android tablet we've usedm but is a better all-round choice than the excellent Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 ? It's a very close call, but with similar prices, we'd argue the faster internals, superb ergonomics and IR emitter just about make the Xoom 2 the better buy.

There's an even bigger question posed by the late arrival this month of the Tegra 3-toting Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime. It's early days for quad-core in tablets, so right now there isn't much software to take full advantage of its added power, but there's no denying tablet performance is racing forward at pace, and dual-core suddenly sound less cutting-edge. In answer to that we'd say this: the Transformer Prime is excellent, but that extra power will cost you £120 over the Xoom 2. Unless you absolutely must have the latest technology, Motorola's new baby remains a more tempting mainstream device.

First impressions

At first sight, the Allview P2Alldro smartphone exceeds any expectation. It’s not just another smartphone using Android as an O.S., but a fully developed phone, surpassing many other phones in this range. And it’s dual-sim also!

Design

Although the designed is relatively simple, it will definitely attract everybody’s attention. The front cover and the battery cover are made from steel, thus offering the phone not only an increased resistance, but also a special glow. The front cover breaks the “black is cool” pattern and presents us with a new color, burgundy (a dark red), designed to distance the phone from other similar.

What can we, physically, see at the first sight? The front offers a 3,5 inch display and three buttons (fast settings menu, Allview menu and the return button) that integrates very well with the design. On the back we can observe the 5 MP camera and the pretty powerful speaker. The sides, the right one has the mini-USB port and the camera button while the left, the volume buttons. Above we can find the on/off button and the centered 3,5 mm jack.

But the smartphone has some downsides. The ink used to write the company’s logo, the product name and the characters on the buttons doesn’t express much confidents and it’s quite possible that may erase in time. Another setback is the battery cover: very easy to pull off, not so easy to put back on. Even with this drawbacks (that are small if you think about it) the phone receives a 9,5 from the HiFi-Gadgets Team behalf.

Functionality

The first impression is that of a fast smartphone. Android 2.3 Gingerbread is one of the best Android versions and this is very well reflected on the Allview P2Alldro. This is also due to the 670 Mhz processor and the 256 MB of RAM. The biggest minus is that you can’t run almost any sort of app (including taking pictures) without the presence of a microSD card although the P2Alldro has 512 MB of internal memory. Basically, the smartphone becomes a classicphone.

The menu is one typical for an Android, so fans of this O.S. would not find it difficult to work with. The multi-touch screen offers extremely lively colors, pictures and clips run on the Allview P2Alldro will been shown on a superior quality.

While there are many cameras that impress with their specifications, an argument could be made that not all have a distinctive character to them. This doesn’t apply to the Fujifilm X-Pro1, which to all appearances resembled a rangefinder from the 1970s. However, its technology under the hood is pure 21st century; a mirrorless design, APS-C sensor and 16 megapixels capturing capacity, ensure that pics with this retro beauty won’t look like they are from the past. We can’t wait to get our hands on one.

Motorola's Defy+ brings an interesting twist to the smartphone in that it's a rugged handset that's certified as IP67-compliant. This is one of a number of internationally designated ratings, and any device that has this rating is dustproof and able to withstand immersion in up to 1m of water for 30 minutes.

The Shell of the Defy+ is the same as its predecessor, with rubber covers for two ports (microUSB on the left edge and headphones connector along the top) the most obvious feature. The backplate is held in place by a sliding lock, and the MicroSD card slot, which can be used to boost the 1GB of internal storage, is under the battery.

The Gorilla Glass screen is scratch-resistant.Motorola has built all this without having to bulk out the chassis much. The Defy+ measures a fairly standard 107x59x13.4mm and weighs 118g.

The single-core 1GHz Ti OMAP3620 processor is perfectly adequate. Motorola's Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating system provides seven home screens and adds a range of applications and widgets. Among the additions are some social media tools for Twitter and Facebook, and support for DLNA media sharing. Car Dock, an alternative user interface for use when driving, offers just six large onscreen icons at any one time. It connects to your contacts, and provides navigation, music and calling facilities, although it offers very few customisation options.

The most impressive of the Motorola-specific apps is undoubtedly the music app. The built-in FM radio and stored music and video options are joined by features such as YouTube searches, lyric finding from within the music playback window, and song identification courtesy of SoundHound - a popular inclusion and one we remeber fondly from previous Motorola handsets. Nonetheless, it's an enticing extra for music fans.

Overall, the motorola Defy+ impresses. The Rugged features don't bring it to industrial standars, but might provide some extra solidity in everyday work or leisure use. There are also some nice software extras and the handset is a good size for one-handed use.

The FX format camera offers 16.2-million pixels, an ISO range from 50 to ISO 204 800, along with a 51 focus point AF system. A 3.2" LCD monitor is onboard, as is a much improved video functionality in the form of full HD (1920 x 1080) movie recording function at 30 fps. Three movie formats are also on offer, which is aimed at addressing a variety of video requirements, as is a continuous frame rate of 10 fps.

Lenovo IdeaTab S2

The IdeaTab S2 seems to have taken the phrase “everything but the kitchen sink” and ran with it, showcasing a 10.1" Android tablet that features a 1280 x 800 LED-backlit IPS display, 1 GB of memory, a solid state drive (SSD) up to 64 GB all running on Android Ice Cream Sandwich. While it curiously does not boast Tegra 3 (instead it packs 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor) it does have a keyboard dock, which adds two USB 2.0 ports and an SD card reader to its offerings. While it offers a sufficient nine hours of battery life, it all weighs in at 580 g – 5 grams lighter than the excellent Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Lenovo K800 Medfield

Even if the K800 did not have the distinction of being the first smartphone powered by Intel, it would still catch our attention. Boasting a 4.5" screen and running off a 1.6 GHz Intel Medfield processor, the phone further features an 8 megapixel camera that offers up ISO 3200.

Despite running a modified version of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) rather than Ice Cream Sandwich, and although this phone will not be seen in SA it still looks like promising foray for Intel, who is strong on the PC processor front but lacking foothold in the smartphone and tablet market. Intel is also receiving support from Motorola, who will be releasing an Intel powered phone in the second half of this year.

Huawei Ascend P1 S
