Little Dragon

Based in Gothenburg, Sweden, Little Dragon gives a performance that mustn’t be missed!  Lead singer Yukimi Nagano’s strong and sensual voice, paired with the perfect mix of percussion and electronic sound, makes for nothing less than perfection.  After seeing the band recently at Celebrate Brooklyn’s free summer concert series, we are even more eager to reunite in the forts of Punta Christo.

Levon Vincent

American born artist, Levon Vincent, aims to provide us with positive vibrations through his tropical, methodically manicured, and joint weakening sound.  There is nothing we won’t give to hear “Double Jointed Sex Freak pt. 3” on the shores of Pula.

Mount Kimbie (live)

This British duo took us all on a glorious journey through space after releasing their first and only full length, titled “Crooks and Lovers”. It was announced earlier this year they were signed to Warp records and are currently working on a second album. Let us thank them for taking the time…Dimensions wouldn’t be the same without you.

A lot of things are left uncertain when it comes to supposedly U.K. born collective, Δkkord. One thing, however, is for certain, based on a few releases that blessed us in 2012, we know they can make a proper bass tune.  Part break-beat, part techno, listen below for a taste. We can’t wait to experience the mystery that is Δkkord.

Brooklyn’s own Travis Stewart has taken the music world by storm. Whether its owning his own record label, collaborating with the amazing Praveen Sharma to produce the sounds of Sepalcure, or just plain smashing things up under his stage name Machinedrum, we love and support Travis to no end. Can’t wait to see you in Croatia.

As we prepare ourselves for another dimension, lets give thanks that we are among those going to experience the wonder that is Pula. Dimensions 2012, here we come.

• While at the Portland stop of Mumford & Sons’ touring festival, Gentlemen of the Road, Katie Curran sent Cultivora a digital postcard.
• Marjana Jaidi is in San Francisco for Outside Lands this weekend. She documented her journey there with a three-part Road to Outside Lands series.

Dimensions is finally here and we couldn’t be more excited! Brought to us by the well known and loved Outlook Festival, Dimensions focuses its sound on house, bass, and the deeper end of the electronic music spectrum. This year’s lineup, which is stacked with jaw dropping artists, does not fail to amaze even the most critical of music critics. The bill includes Little Dragon, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Mount Kimbie, and Levon Vincent, just to name a few. And as if the line up wasn’t solid enough, it’s recently been confirmed that Nicolas Jaar will also grace the headlining spot. We almost can’t believe it…!

The festival takes place on the breathtaking coast of Pula, Croatia at Fort Punta Christo, the legendary site that is also shared with its big brother Outlook Festival just a few days prior. Taking advantage of its surroundings, you can also find a number of boat parties that will cruise the crystal blue waters of the Adriatic Sea. What could be better?

If you are looking for comfortable and affordable accommodations, don’t fret. There are a number of options, which include camping, hostels, and private apartments. We managed to find a sweet place via Airbnb, a trusted online host for apartment/home rentals.

Basic returns to (le) Poisson Rouge on Saturday July 14th with a mid-summer sizzler of cutting-edge electronic sounds. Our guest for the night is a special one – the Ghostly International standout, and techno renaissance man Matthew Dear. He’s making his Basic debut on the night, playing one of the dancefloor-thumping DJ sets that have earned him legions of devoted fans worldwide. With his new album Beams set to drop later this summer, Dear is once again about to take the international spotlight. We’re honored to host this iconic artist for what promises to be a dynamic night of music.

Depending on whom you ask, Matthew Dear is a DJ, a dance-music producer, an experimental pop artist, a bandleader. He co-founded both Ghostly International and its dancefloor offshoot, Spectral Sound. He’s had remixes commissioned by The XX, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Spoon, Hot Chip, The Postal Service, and Chemical Brothers; he’s made mixes for Get Physical‘s Body Language and Fabric mix series. He maintains four aliases (Audion, False, Jabberjaw, and Matthew Dear), each with its own style and distinct visual identity. He straddles multiple musical worlds and belongs to none—and he’s just hitting his stride.

Matthew Dear’s latest full-length album Beams is both a drastic departure from and worthy successor to his last LP Black City. A suite of weird, wild, and queasily optimistic rhythm-driven pop songs, Beams is the latest chapter in the continuing evolution of one of music’s most fascinating minds. After over a decade of exploring pop’s outer limits, Matthew Dear now inhabits a rarified corner of the musical universe: no longer tethered to any one genre, respected by his peers and blessed with a bottomless well of creative energy. Now is Matthew Dear’s moment, and it sounds like nothing else.

Dear has been a fixture in the DJ booth at the world’s finest clubs and festivals for years now, and this party will mark his Basic debut. Expect the unexpected – his DJ sets are just as unpredictable and inspirational as his original music. Joining him on the decks will be Basic’s Sleepy & Boo, who have been bringing some of techno’s leading figures to (le) Poisson Rouge in recent months. Support comes from ReSolute‘s resident Connie, marking her return to the Basic decks – and her LPR debut. Mike Murphy gets things going for this one, his first Basic set since his appearance with Speedy J in May. As always we’ll have booming reinforced sound at (le) Poisson Rouge – with loads of bass and crisp highs.

The breakthrough with Brooklyn-based Drew Lustman aka FaltyDL’s tracks came when he dropped the tempo and allowed his beats to breathe, which found him a natural home on the British label Planet Mu, immersed in the possibilities of the dubstep underground. Centering on the rhythms of UK garage provided the key which unlocked Drew’s natural sense of the interconnectedness of electronic funk styles, the limber beat patterns allowing him to forward from UKG into dubstep space, back into NYC’s original garage and further back still towards disco. We recently spoke with Benny Soto of Dance.Here.Now. and 718 sessions. You may not know his name but his legendary parties are quite the mainstay in NYC. He chats with us about Paradise Garage, essential tips for parties, and his time with Keith Haring.

HiFi Cartel: How was working with Keith Haring, and in what ways did he influence your musical upbringing in NYC along with your introduction to Paradise Garage?

Benny Soto: Everything about that time still plays a part in my life today. The music, the people, the clubs, art, etc…Clubbing wasn’t as sophisticated and evolved as it is today. It was raw. NYC was gritty and fun. Good stuff came out of that. I think people who experienced that particular time carry a little something rare and special. Keith was very special and he knew how to have a party. He really did teach me to have fun. He was a rock star in many ways. He brought all kinds of people together. People with money and the street. Essential elements for a great party. Working for Keith Haring was a gift. How many people can say they knew Keith..and Warhol, and Basquiat. I STILL go, “Wow!”

Paradise Garage was special. What can I say that hasn’t been already said? Not much…but I know it existed because it was a different time in NY. That club could exist at that time. That is no longer possible..at least not on the island of Manhattan. Brooklyn perhaps…Berlin I hear. I was extremely fortunate to have experienced Garage. I know it’s over and done with. But that spirit that I experienced there is with me still. That’s the magic I still look for in a party today ; )

HFC: Dance.Here.Now and 718 Sessions have become quite the success for both partiers and audiophiles alike. World renown Djs play under the intimate lights of Cielo , which has what we would argue the best club system in North America. How did this concept come about and how do you maintain it’s success in such a competitive NYC market?

BS: Cielo is special because the people who own it and run it actually care. They believe in what they do. It’s an intimate space that was really thought out and executed well. Cielo is almost 10 years old..but whenever I travel I still come back home and think ok this is still a cool place. It feels good. It’s consistent. It’s a club for music lovers. You can see that clearly. At the end of the day people want an authentic experience. I think Cielo manages to do that well.

HFC: What are your thoughts about both commercial and underground house music today?

BS: I think it’s fantastic the electronic music scene has gotten so huge. All these kids listening to all the commercial stuff will eventually start listening to different kinds of music. Musical tastes change and these kids will start wondering how this all started. Eventually they find the cool stuff. I personally try and be open to everything…keeping in mind that everything ain’t for everybody ; )

HFC: Name us a few records you can’t live without?

BS: Love is the message…Be Yourself…and everything in between that : )

HFC: Finally what would you say are the “essentials” for throwing an epic party?

BS: Keep it real and fun. Have fun putting the party together. Throw different things together. Mix it up. Don’t take yourself so serious if you are a promoter. I think most of us started in this business because we were having fun. Try and remember that. And the people that come thru the door and pay? Make sure they have a good time whenever possible.

The Governors Ball Music Festival kicks off tomorrow on NYC’s Randall’s Island, and we didn’t think we could be anymore excited. That is until Cultivora came up with their very own Instagram bingo game, #GovBingo, which will be held during the festival this weekend. The winner will receive a pair of tickets to next year’s Gov Ball.

The rules are simple: take pictures at the festival that correspond to the bingo board, and upload them using Instagram. You must hashtag your post with #GovBingo and the corresponding bingo square for it to count. (CLICK HERE for a full-sized version of the bingo board).

Every time you get a “bingo” pattern (see below), you will be entered to win a pair of tickets to Gov Ball 2013. The more bingos you get, the better your chances of winning. You can also increase your odds by sharing your Instagram posts on Twitter; just remember to use the hashtags so they can find your photos.

To be eligible, make sure you’re following @cultivora and @govballnyc on Instagram (and Twitter, if applicable). In order to enter the contest, you must have an Instagram account with public view settings.

#GovBingo will begin at 11am Saturday, June 23, and will end on Monday, June 25 at noon (in case there’s no cell service on Randall’s Island). Once the contest closes, the team at Cultivora will compile the bingo boards and announce the winner on Wednesday, June 27 via Instagram. Good Luck!
