Value in betting comes in many shapes and forms. As Harry Findlay famously declared: “There’s plenty of value betting odds-on!” He was absolutely right. However, nothing in gambling remains static. Markets evolve, and what was once a treasure trove of value can quickly become barren. Odds-on bets, for example, became so heavily backed that they often turned into poor value—the complete opposite of their initial appeal.

For me, value often lies in speculative-priced selections—those big-priced opportunities that, when approached correctly, can offer exceptional returns.

But where exactly can you uncover these elusive high-value bets?

One of the first things to recognize when studying horse racing is that not all trainers are created equal. Some consistently excel at producing winners at speculative odds, while others rarely succeed in this space. This isn’t to say those who don't win at big odds can’t offer value—sometimes, knowing what to avoid is as valuable as knowing what to back. But certain trainers stand out for their ability to deliver big-priced winners and exceptional value.

This post builds on one I wrote years ago that was very well-received, generating thousands of page views. One of the trainers I highlighted back then was Michael Dods. At the time, his record with two-year-old debutantes was outstanding, particularly in terms of placing. Many of his runners placed at big odds, and blind betting on these produced excellent profits.

While his stats in recent years may not have been as remarkable, his past performance is a reminder of how profitable following the right trainers can be.

One Horse Trainer I Avoid Betting

I don't like to sound mean spirited. However, after following two-year-old horse racing for umpteen years I've come to the conclusion there are a few horse trainers who are either unlucky, lack any real ammunition or simply not very good at winning races. Whatever the reason, I would definitely stick a label on these following 5 horse trainers saying:

'Do not touch!'

The other 4 will be detailed in the following weeks.

Yes, I said it was a touch harsh.

Tim Easterby -

I don't know why, but Tim Easterby is one of those two-year-old trainers who simply makes hard work of everything. His debut runners have very little hope of winning. In fact, as soon as I see one of his horses running I consider they have next to no chance of winning and one less horse to think about. Even his juveniles on their second start are near hopeless. The stats back this point up as his strike rate for even fancied horses is poor. I can remember the good old days when he would send a decent horse to Ripon. Those days seem to have gone. I'm not being nasty, but you'll be doing yourself a favour by not betting on any.

You may be critical of my rambling about the Yorkshire man. It's not personal (I want to see him win races). But look at the following facts from my personal database:

From a sample of almost 800 debut runners he has a 2% win rate.

Strangely, 50% of his debut winners arrived in the month of April (not that it would do you any favours following that stat).

From 124 debut runners priced 10/1 and less sp he had just 12 winners. And 8 of those were priced 9/2 and less.

As stated, second time out stats are poor as hell. With over 100+ horses priced 13/2 and less sp having a 13% win rate. Truly dire.

To be fair, Esterby has done much better in 2025. So credit where it is due and this success will boost his generally poor stats.

Sadly, Mick Easterby isn't much better either. Although he did have a two-year-old debut winner this season in Scatter Penny.

The Highs & Lows Of Terry Ramsden

A story written by Jason Bennetto, originally published in The Independent on Thursday, 7th May 1998, charting the highs and lows of Terry Ramsden. He was the archetypal Thatcherite success story. The son of a postal worker from Romford, Essex, he rose to become one of the country's richest men and most powerful racehorse owners. His millionaire lifestyle, built in the early 1980s on trading in Japanese bonds, included the obligatory executive jet, Rolls-Royces, homes around the world, and the ownership of a football club. I wonder if Terry ever visited joka room casino bonuses for a bit of a jolly. His gambling record was the envy of every trackside punter - a regular winner both on the racecourse and at the bookies.

He was a true Eighties self-made man with his cockney vowels and shoulder-length hair. Yet Terry Ramsden, 46, looked anything but a high-flying, city whizz- kid yesterday as he stood in the dock at the Old Bailey. A bankrupt with debts of more than 100m pounds, he was jailed for 21 months for trying to conceal about £300,000 from his creditors.

Ramsden's roller-coaster career began in the City at the age of 16 as an insurance clerk. He quickly realised he could make more money by working for himself and set up his own business, making £25,000 in the first month.

But the vehicle for Ramsden's career was a company in Edinburgh called Glen International which he bought in 1984, when it had a turnover of £18,000. By 1987, the figure had risen to 3.5billion and Ramsden was said to be the nation's 57th richest man. The venture was based on his knowledge of the specialised and volatile market in Japanese warrants. These were options to buy shares in Japanese companies. He gambled on a rising market and got it right.

After hitting the jackpot, he was quick to adopt a suitably flamboyant and high-flying lifestyle to go with the new-found wealth. Along with his Porsche, Ferraris and Rolls-Royces, he was interested in racehorses - lots of them. At one stage he owned 75.

One of his biggest successes on the racecourse was when his horse Not So Silly won the Ayr Gold Cup in 1987. Small of stature, but invariably accompanied by minder, he was a regular visitor to the winner's enclosure.

"I'm a stockbroker from Enfield. I've got long hair and I like a bet," he once said. He also owned a Georgian mansion on a luxury estate in Blackheath, south- east London, where he could relax in a swimming pool with hologram shark fins beamed on to the water, before flying by helicopter to Walsall Football Club, of which he was both owner and chairman. He lived with his wife, Lisa, and their son, Jake. They also had homes in Scotland, Bermuda and Portugal.

But in 1986 the market and Ramsden's luck changed. The 1987 crash knocked hundreds of millions of pounds off the value of his securities. He started to run out of cash to keep the huge and complex portfolio of securities afloat and his marriage was on the rocks. Added to this, he was estimated to have lost 58m at the racetrack - there were even stories of him parting with 2m in a single day. Within a year, Glen International crashed, owing 98m, and he moved to the United States.

In September 1991, a warrant for his arrest was issued on fraud charges and he was detained in a jail in Los Angeles until his return to Britain in February 1992.

The next month, Ramsden was declared bankrupt - with the Inland Revenue demanding 21.5m and other creditors bringing the total debt to near 100m. Ramsden escaped with a two-year suspended sentence in November 1993 after he pleaded guilty to offences of recklessly inducing fresh investment in his empire.

As a bankrupt, Ramsden was required to disclose all his assets and income but failed to reveal the existence of a hidden trust and concealed his ownership of three million shares in the Silversword Corporation, a Canadian company in which he had a controlling interest. Thousands of pounds was paid from the trust fund to Ramsden's mother, Florence, a former cleaner, which she passed on to her son. He also failed to mention winnings of £77,000 in 1992, from an accumulator bet involving five horses and a dog.

Last year, the Serious Fraud Office announced that Ramsden was to be prosecuted for failing to disclose assets.

At his trial, Ramsden admitted failing to disclose about £300,000. It was also revealed that the fund had also helped pay for a house worth £323,800 for his wife and son.

Jailing Ramsden for 21 months, Judge Peter Beaumont QC also ordered him to pay £10,000 towards prosecution costs. He told Ramsden: "You broke the law and must now be punished." The judge said he would serve at least half the sentence in prison.

Ramsden, of Fulham, south-west London, pleaded guilty to three charges of breaching the Insolvency Act by failing to disclose all his assets. Anthony Arlidge QC, for the defence, said: "He was motivated by a desire to win back his wife and restart his family life. He accepts now that is no longer possible." He added: "He is a man of considerable talent, who for a long time was extremely successful. Rightly or wrongly, he felt his failure was not his fault but due to the misguided views of others."

How to spot and back potential top-notch two-year-olds

If you think that title sounds familiar, then you have a photographic memory. Perhaps, like me, you've got a random copy from bygone times.

The Sporting Life - Weekender (1994).

That publication shows my age. So I very much doubt it's at the front or back of your mind.

I'm sure many of you enjoyed The Sporting Life - Weekender. Those halcyon days of Nick Mordin's Systems.

I can guarantee it was the first read for many punters who loved his insight. The kind of thing you would never have thought about. For example: 'Does backing the outsider of three make money?'

His Systems were always an interesting read.

I remember he detailed his thoughts about Denman winning the Gold Cup (which was in the negative) and Harry Findlay on The Morning Line saying: 'And that Nick Mordin...' I guess it made good TV.

A full-page publication of my brother's research about Group-entered two-year-olds. Tony worked on this for 5-years and the largest study in the world. To think it has carried on to this day. He hadn't been so excited since he found casinocorner.ca and played to his heart's content. Now, 55, it's been a journey of highs and lows, following an undying passion. If we thought we knew lots then, we know even more now. I say we because my brother and I are twins.

From those early days we have continued and gamble. In fact, we are getting prepared for the new Flat turf season 2025. I'm presently updating my horse trainer stats (2yos trainers) which is as insightful as Nick Mordin's read. The Weekender used to be full of horse tipster adverts (including Patrick Veitch who actually had one on the front page of this issue) because, I guess, so many punters love Free Bets UK.

To be good at gambling you have to go the extra mile. Or put it another way you have to be obsessed with learning and being better than the competition. To be fair, it is really about being our best and that journey never ends.

Thinking back 31 years since this article was published: In a class of their own: How to spot and back potential top-notch two-year-olds seems a long time ago. I guess it is. But also, it has been a continuation which has seem many incredible wins.

Our work continues because it is a passion.

You will often see us at Great Yarmouth races with our good friend fellow pro gambler Jerry Banks. There's nothing better than a good catch up, a few pints, and finish with an Indian meal at the Savoy Tandoori. We usually stay over and head to the Grosvenor Casino on Marine Parade.

The Weekender Issue is a blast from the past but I'm pleased Tony allowed Nick Mordin publish. He said: 'Most people would want to keep it secret.' That was true but most people don't want to put the work into making their betting pay. So while very insightful I doubt too many people used the information to make a million.

It was sad to see Nick Mordin slip off the radar.

12:14 Lingfield -

I don't usually give horse racing tips on HCE.

And I'm not going to be detailing any tips in this post either. You may wonder why I am bothering to detail my thoughts.

At this time of year the 2yo maidens can be weak. However, you do get the odd horse with ample ability.

However, looking at the 12:14 Lingfield is almost like watching a race where no one has turned up. I mean that in the sense that the race looks exceptionally poor. I often call these type of races 'Egg & Spoon' races. This race may be going one notch less to the sack race. Where all the children with no particular sporting ability have their chance to taste victory.

Good for them.

I don't knock the opportunity to win a race and neither will these trainers. In fact, this may well be the only chance many of these horses have to win a race in their career. Someone will be winning.

This Farh is a scapegoat of a favourite. A forced favourite if I have ever seen one. In the sense that it's the jolly because the rest look even worse. I don't care whether it wins or loses. It's there to be shot at.

Black Falcon. I'm not saying this to be nasty (as I always hope for the underdog) but the day I see a Brian Toomey two-year-old fancied in the betting I'm thinking something has gone wrong. I hope it goes well for connections. Its not impossible but I wouldn't be betting on the horse, especially at 5/1.

Amanda Perrett's Dancing Terror a cheap purchase still in the ownership of the trainer. The only downside is that Perrett has a pretty poor strike race with her debutantes even when short odds. I think they have about a 14% strike rate, so it may be price to chance if 7/1. If priced 11/1 - 20/1 the stats are dire.

Straighttothepoint, an ex-Irish race horse, was so weak in the betting last time out it was quite astonishing. Pretty sure it opened up early with bookies about 10/1. It returned 100/1. I couldn't be betting on it. However, it has won a race which is something in a race of this grade.

Almutraf was well backed last time out in a maiden. It didn't achieve a great deal but this is a drop in class. I wouldn't be betting but in a race with Eyore and Gee Up Neddy there may be a glimmer of hope for someone.

Kazakh didn't show much on debut. Second start always brings an aspect of hope for two-year-olds.

Delightful Madam is stepping up in distance, which looks needed.

Saidha is trained by Mark Usher, who is much better in nursery races.

Spinning Doctor doesn't have much going for it in the way of stats on its fourth start.

Nutcracker needs to improve.

I'm fascinated to watch this race to see who wins. I won't be betting.

If you want to cover the full spectrum, you should incorporate a little bit of everything to give yourself an edge. Considering that most punters are lazy and don’t put much thought into their betting strategies, those who do invest time and effort have a better chance of finding the winning angle.

Personally, I rely on a combination of form analysis, significant entries, statistics (from The Racing Post), and my private database. This database provides detailed insights into every two-year-old trainer’s performance with juveniles during their first two starts, as well as what I call “global statistics,” which track horses beyond their initial runs. The process of gathering and analyzing this data is both educational and rewarding. I’m not referring to the surface-level information found in most publications. With some time and effort, you can uncover details that 99.9% of the horse racing community wouldn’t even dream of. That’s the type of edge we’re after.

The process of gambling needs to be precise and disciplined. If your approach is even slightly flawed or inconsistent, you’ll inevitably face issues. This inconsistency can be a major problem. I speak from experience, as I’ve fallen victim to such lapses far too often this season. Without a rigid, well-defined system, you’ll pay the price. It’s almost as if the betting gods are watching, ready to teach you a lesson: “Stick to the plan, or suffer the consequences.” I’ve wondered if my own poor decisions stem from sheer stupidity—or perhaps brain damage—but it’s clear that mistakes have cost me dearly.

We all live and learn. Nothing stays the same, and as you gain experience, it’s crucial to future-proof your approach with genuine knowledge. Otherwise, you might wake up one day to find that your strategies are as outdated as a Blockbuster store in the age of streaming services.

For most, the starting point in any assessment is studying the form. This step should never be neglected or seen as a chore. If you don’t invest time in understanding both the race and the horses involved—an ongoing part of any betting routine—you’ll remain at a disadvantage. You must review a race as many times as necessary to fully understand each horse’s potential.

Recently, I’ve been dedicating more time to this process. It’s easy to dismiss horses that finish far down the field on debut, but that can lead to a lack of understanding. Not every horse that fails to impress on its first outing is a lost cause; many improve significantly in their second or third starts. Recognizing this potential is critical.

To streamline your approach, start by creating a shortlist of horses that catch your interest. This might include horses with proven form, promising entries in betting guides, significant entries, or other markers of potential.

Once you have a shortlist, it’s helpful to add these horses to a tracker. This allows you to monitor when they are entered in future races. With two-year-old horse racing especially, it’s vital to reassess your selections as new information becomes available and to analyze the race they’re entered in well in advance. If you wait until the last minute, you might find that your target horse has already been heavily backed, leaving you with diminished value.

If this happens frequently, it’s a clear sign that your process needs to change. You must be proactive, not reactive, in your betting strategy. Being part of someone else’s process for winning is a dangerous position to be in, as it leaves you at the mercy of their decisions.

There are significant advantages to being ahead of the curve. Having ample time to assess races and highlight horses of interest reduces the pressure to make snap decisions, which are often ill-advised. Many gamblers fall into this trap, and it’s one of the biggest obstacles to consistent success.

The key is to evaluate races and horses well in advance of their start time. You need to understand not only the potential of the horses on your shortlist but also the context of the race they’re entered in, including the strength of the opposition. This foresight is invaluable.

Most punters lack a structured process. If you’re one of the few who can make money without one, then perhaps you don’t need to listen to my advice. But for the majority, neglecting to establish a disciplined approach is a costly mistake.

Remember, the process is far more important than most people realize. Stick to it, refine it, and always be willing to learn.

I have no idea about photography, but I do enjoy taking photos of thoroughbred race horses at my local racecourses and add them to blog posts. I use my iPhone to take few photos I feel are ok but lacking in quality. The photo I use on this post was taken by me using the iPhone. Anyway, if you are interesting in being a professional photographer there is clearly a lot more to it than meets the eye.

Good luck to them—they work hard for their success, and I’m not here to criticize. But I do wonder if they’re fully aware of the path they’re taking. Not everything that glitters is gold.

It doesn’t bother me if someone else is successful or struggling; I’m focused on my own journey. That’s not to say I’m unsupportive—I'm here to encourage and help others. But to truly progress, each of us has to look inward, aiming to improve ourselves instead of seeing others as competition or worrying about their success.

Some people support others on platforms like Twitter, only to be ignored in return. To me, that lack of reciprocity says a lot. It might even hint at a deeper issue.

The Caulfield Cup is a Group 1 horse race which takes place at Caulfield Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia. It has a rich history dating back to its inauguration in 1879, won by a horse called Newminster. This handicap run on turf is for horses age three years and older over a distance of 1 mile four furlongs (2400 metres). With a race history spanning over 240 years, and prize money of $5,000,000 it’s no surprise to hear this is one of the most popular horse races in the southern hemisphere and holds global recognition. This race is held annually on the third Saturday in October, and the third and final day of the Caulfield Carnival. It’s worth noting horses may qualify for the Melbourne Cup via this contest, which is held some 16 days later at Flemington racecourse.

It's November 2005. The location: Cheltenham racecourse. It's about an hour before the first race - the opening day of the Paddy Power Gold Cup meeting.

The Scotsman got an early start on 1st January 1999 and again in March. It didn't take McManus to seek him out. As well as conflicting Shannon Gale, the bookmaker also accepted Nick Dundee. Dundee was the Irish banker of the week. The young novice ran in the colours of McManus' close friends John and Sue Magnier. But Freddie didn't fancy Nick Dundee. 'I was going 11/8, One gentleman wanted £80,000 on, and I laid it to him, but I didn't take down the price. He looked at me for a moment then asked for the bet again. So I laid him another £110,000 to £80,000, but I still not taking down the price.'

It was a close-run race. Then it happened Nick Dundee's legs buckled landing over the third last fence. Plus, presumably, the sound of one Scottish heart beating faster. Freddie was not always so lucky.

Although the bookie and punter seem to be natural enemies, they also tend to respect each other alot. 'We're friends,' says Williams sincerely. 'John was in business as a bookmaker for 15 years. He had a good bet on Dawn Run when she won the Gold Cup in 1986 and that helped him to change his life. However, he told me that if she'd lost, he'd have been skint the following week.'

Freddie admits, 'Festival trading is totally draining, which is why I stay in a nice, quiet hotel. When you get back, all you want to do is eat and sleep. I'm afraid I'm well behind in the entertainment stakes.'

There was plenty of entertainment on November '04, though: The Rising Moon, running in the McManus colours, was the medium of a £100,000 plunge at 3/1. Half an hour later, JP's Spot The Difference won the Sporting Index cross-country chase. Someone stuck on £28,000 at 7/1 for a payout of nearly two hundred grand.

Freddie Williams was the buccaneering bookmaker who left onlookers amazed by an incredible boldness that, at the end of one remarkable day at the races, had cost him £1m. He attained celebrity status as the immovable object that met the irresistible force of J.P. McManus, the singularly audacious punter whose huge wagers during the Cheltenham National Hunt Festival each March are one of horse-racing's constants.

Their personal conflict might have bankrupted lesser players, yet relations were always cordial amid McManus's six-figure investments. Such Corinthian spirit, made easier by each man's wealth, captivated many who followed the betting moves at the leading racing and greyhound meetings, and made Williams a hugely popular and high-profile bookmaker.

Williams's most bruising encounter with McManus came on a day he would never forget, as it was to end in terror. It began at the Cheltenham Festival on 16 March 2006. McManus had struck a £100,000 bet to win £600,000 on Reveillez, who won, then followed up with £5,000 each way on Kadoun, another of his horses, at 50-1. When Kadoun won, in the last race of the day, Williams owed McManus more than £1m. As if that were that not bad enough, on driving away from the course in his Jaguar with his daughter Julie and her boyfriend, Andrew, Williams was ambushed by an armed gang. Though the three escaped physically unscathed, the ordeal shook them badly. The assailants were said to have made off with £70,000.

It had long been Williams's ambition to be a bookmaker at Cheltenham. Born in the coal-mining heartland of Cumnock, South Ayrshire, he developed an aptitude for laying odds at a young age, watching the miners playing endless games of pitch and toss. "There was nothing to do then but work and gamble," recalled Williams, whose grandfather and father had both gone down the pit. Freddie's first role model was his great-grandfather. When a pit accident robbed him of an arm, cut off in an accident, he recovered to set up in business as a coal merchant.

Freddie was bedridden as a child and missed out on pit life after failing a medical as a result of polio. He swept floors in the local Curries of Auchinleck lemonade factory, and acted as a bookie's runner before graduating to lay his own odds in a small way at Auchinleck greyhound track.

Though his schooling was interrupted and his education compromised, Freddie Williams had an aptitude that allowed him to rise to manager at the lemonade plant. A buy-out among staff increased his involvement, and later he took over the business. In 1991 he sold his stake and four years later opened the alcopop manufacturer Caledonian Bottlers, which boasted a state-of-the-art factory employing 50 full-time staff, and used natural Scottish spring water.

Williams maintained, however, that bookmaking, not bottling, was his livelihood. He had established a bookmaker's pitch at Ayr racecourse in 1974, where he became known as a daredevil, and then put his name down for a coveted spot at Cheltenham. But the "dead man's shoes" system of bookmaker pitch transfer was a source of great frustration, and Williams languished on the waiting list for 20 years. In one interview, he said: "I started off at 120 on the list and by the 1990s I was at number 40. It was never going to happen, but then the rules changed and you could buy a pitch. I was the first to buy one. I thought, 'Here I am! I'm not just here for a day out – I'm taking on the biggest hitters in the game.' "

So it was that on 1 January 1999, Williams arrived for Cheltenham's traditional New Year's Day meeting. McManus tested his nerve immediately, placing £90,000 on the Queen Mother's runner Buckside. The 2-1 favourite led at the last fence, but faded into second place. Seven weeks earlier, Williams had undergone a quadruple heart bypass.

He never looked back. In March 1999 he took on McManus and other big hitters over the three days of the National Hunt Festival. He clearly loved the cut and thrust, never flinching no matter how high the stakes. "Fearless" Freddie was soon in his pomp, making appearances on Channel 4 racing where he shared his love of the betting ring, and the game of wits, bravado and instinct he waged with customers, who ranged from heavy hitters to £2 punters at Glasgow's Shawfield greyhound track.

Shannon Gale marked the start of battle royal with McManus. Williams accepted a bet of £100,000 each way on the 7-1 chance. Honours were shared when the horse ran fourth, ensuring an each-way payout of £175,000 rather than the £875,000 had it won.

Williams enjoyed studying his clients as much as the horses, seeking give-away signs of confidence or uncertainty. He stood at other racecourses and at greyhound tracks, and owned a string of racehorses. In 2004 he bought the 78 St Vincent Street restaurant in Glasgow, installing his daughter Julie as manager, it was said to stop her following him into the betting game.
