I have a longstanding respect for the works of Grasshopper Manufacture, a studio that specializes in games that carry punk aesthetics and at times baffling design sensibilities. Even at their worst, their works carry surprising intelligence under their often crude surfaces. That said, I hesitate to say they've ever been particularly good when it comes to gameplay, and even my favorite title of theirs 'No More Heroes' was bogged down by extremely basic combat mechanics and one of the (possibly intentionally, depending on who you ask) dullest open-worlds in gaming. I was worried then, that being purchased by GungHo, a…

In spite of Clementine's popularity, she is not the protagonist of these first two episodes. This honor goes to Javier García, a young man who has managed to keep his family alive through the entire apocalypse by driving around in a van and scrounging for supplies when needed. At first I was put off by this, preferring to have been in control of Clem, but Telltale is beginning to convince me that Javier is worth it. He is not unlike Lee - reasonable, dependable, charismatic, and with a dark past (not nearly as bad as Lee's, however).

He is to report to a dilapidated apartment building that has been seized by the government and turned into public housing, and he is to be the landlord. The previous landlord, as the introductory cinematic shows us quite grimly, was incapable of carrying out his duties and forcibly removed from the premises. It's not just the endless technical problems, it's inconsistency in the script, plot holes, the occasional weak actor, and above all, why? Why do we need to Telltale a Batman story? Are they going to do something no one else has in the last 80 years of the Dark Knight's escapades?

Schell Games' virtual reality puzzle title opens with an interactive 'Bond' title sequence that manages to set the tone that the player is experiencing something special. Accompanied by a fabulous theme song and stylized visuals of giant drills & dangerous sharks, it's one of the most impressive opening credits that I've ever seen in a game.

The adventure title revolves around interacting with Trico, a griffin-like creature that has the head of a dog, and exploring an area that the player, a small boy, wakes up in. What's groundbreaking here is that Trico never feels like a video game character, rather he interacts as a wild animal would be expected to.
From both an animation and programming standpoint, it's phenomenal. From watching Trico barely squeeze his way through tight areas to seeing him playfully interact with a large bell as if he was a…

The adventure game is filled with likable characters, and even manages to have two rad protagonists (the wisecracking father Aidan, and his spunk-filled daughter Lily) when developers often struggle to develop one. A lot of this charm is due to the game's fantastic hand-drawn animation that makes a rather by-the-numbers game (for a more in-depth overview of the basics, check out my impressions piece) feel fresh.
The game's narrative has players interacting in both 1950s Ireland and a mysterious new world filled with strange creatures (including an adorable…

It requires a very low level of interaction, nothing more advanced than looping and flipping around in a 3D aquatic environment. Some of the aquatic creatures present in the ocean are amenable to being "ridden" by the diver, where I would swim alongside them, grab hold of them along a fin, and be able to move around the waters at their speed. All of these elements are present in the Square Enix Montreal's turn-based puzzle game adaptation 'Lara Croft GO.' It's really an impressive feat how the developer was able to make a game feel like an extension of the 'Tomb Raider' games, as it's a much more difficult game to adapt than 'Hitman,' which ultimately was just turn-based stealth.

For all the development troubles it's gone through over 10 years, and the oddly rushed nature of much the game's back half, there's a clear love that shines through every crack, and a level of ambition that few games aspire to.
It's familiar territory for Zen Studios to be working with established franchises, as they've worked with 'Star Wars' and 'Marvel' in the past.
'Survival' mixes traditional 'Division' shooter gameplay with elements of survival games, as the name might suggest. The character is dropped into a massive blizzard with very little equipment, and must make their way through New York into the Dark Zone for extraction. Up to 23 other players can join in on each session, making it a race to the finish and a competition for resources. For the especially competitive, the session can be made full PVP with combat allowed between players. Otherwise, players are competing for resources only, and cannot damage one another.

Last episode he beat Penguin (the new CEO of Wayne Enterprises, somehow) into a bloody pulp after being injected with a nasty drug, an act that landed him firmly in Arkham Asylum. As if that wasn't bad enough, Mayor Harvey Dent has betrayed Wayne, initiating a police manhunt and seizing the manor. Things are looking grim on the Bat side too, as the Children of Arkham have grown beyond the caped crusader's ability to stop them.

Telltale's stories often look hopeless by this point in a series, and Wayne is…

The crunchy metal guitars and screaming zombie faces that greet the player upon loading 'Killing Floor 2' somewhat betray the game's true nature; while these things are about as over-the-top as they get, the actual process of playing is decidedly minimalist.
