The original High School Musical Movie was released in Jan. 2006. Disney is famous for producing movies that are suitable for children. If they are correct they win a token. “Hoop Toss” - The HSM kids love their East High Wildcats Basketball Team so be sure to add a b-ball activity. Why not set up a hoop toss. You can use an indoor ball and net or make your own with a wastebasket and any ball you have on hand. Every player gets 10 shots and 1 token is awarded for every basket made. The kids will really want to know what these tokens are for by now! To start the dancing portion, play a few rounds of dance freeze and have some spot dances. “Dance Freeze” is when you abruptly stop the music and the dancers must immediately freeze in whatever posoitiion they are in. If they can hold their position they are awarded 1 token. “Spot” dances is simply when you choose a certain spot in the room and whoever is closest to that spot at the end of the song wins - 1 token. Make sure you keep a running list of all the tokens awarded.

Start off each child with 10 tokens and add on from there. The Menu: A cafeteria line of course! Borrow some plastic trays from your local fast food joint and let the kids line up single file and choose their meal. Have individual servings of hamburgers & hot dogs wrapped in foil, mini pizzas, fries in baskets, salads in cups and a selection of sodas, juice boxes and milks in those small containers. Make a “Cafeteria” sign and provide the lunch lady with a hairnet! Finally we get to the tokens! Switch out the “Cafeteria” sign for an “HSM Concession Stand” sign. During the last half hour of the party set up your concession stand. The Concession stand should consist of items that you would put in their loot bags like bags of chips, candies, chocolate bars, pop, cookies & gum, tattoos, glow sticks, hackey sacks, microphones, key chains, pencils, erasers, costume jewelry and licensed HSM favors. The key is to have a wide assortment of different items as all kids will not choose the same things. In this situation it would be safer to over buy and then return items if you do not use them. Give each child their allotted tokens and a paper lunch bag or a licensed HSM loot bag to fill.

The tokens can be bingo markers, play coins, paper tickets, pennies or buttons for that matter! Have a token board with the items listed for sale and their cost in tokens for the kids to see. The more costly the item, the more tokens they cost. For example, an eraser is 1 token, a pack of bubblegum is 2 tokens and a microphone is 3 tokens. To be fair, have them line up by the amount of the tokens they won - for example the lowest to highest. Have each child in turn buy 1 item and then return to the back of the line. Keep going until all the tokens have run out. This takes a bit of planning but provides a very exciting element to the party! The kids take home things they actually want and will use - not just forget about and throw away!

At the early part of the movie, Troy and Gabriela meet at New Year’s Eve party at the ski resort and they were forced to sing together on the karaoke. Gabriela’s parts were sang by Vanessa Hudgens herself but most singing parts of Troy Bolton were done by Drew Seeley.

The next musical number happens at the gym during basketball practice. Troy and Chad (played by Corbin Bleu) sang Get’cha Head in the Game. A reminder to the whole team that the only way they can win the championship is for the whole team to focus on their basketball games.

Ryan and Sharpay (played by Lucas Grabeel and Ashley Tisdale respectively) are the sibling tandem that Troy and Gabriela go against in the auditions for the school’s winter musical- Twinkle Town.

During the first audition Sharpay and Ryan sing a funky version of “What I’ve been Looking For”. Wearing some fun costume Ryan and Sharpay give the audition their best and make the whole experience for them and for drama teacher Ms. Darbus.

After all the other teens who have auditioned for musical have already left the auditorium, Troy Bolton and Gabriela Montez sang a ballad version of “What I’ve Been Looking For”. It’s just how Kelsi, the song writer created the song, and Ms. Darbus also became impressed. This audition is what caused Troy and Gabriela to be called back to audition again for the lead roles against Sharpay and Ryan.

When Sharpay learns of the call backs and who she’s up against she gets seriously upset that the new girl who happens to be a geek is now a top contender for the lead role. She sings “Stick to the Status Quo” with the characters Zeke, the Brainiacs in school, the Skater dudes, Martha, the Basketball team and other cliques at the school. The song conveyed Sharpay’s feelings regarding school jocks and geeks getting into the high school play. She wants everyone to stick to keep everyone sticking to their cliques and single interests.

During a troubled time at school, Gabriela performs “When There Was Me and You”. At the final auditions Ryan and Sharpay perform a happy song- “Bop to the Top” while Troy and Gabriela gets the opportunity to perform “Breaking Free” at the last minute of the auditions.

At the end of the film-all casts sing “We’re All in This Together”, ending the teen flick on a happy note.

As soon as Troy goes back to school he resumes his jock days as the team captain of the East High basketball team Wildcats. Gabriela on the other hand, finds herself the new girl at East High when her mom gets transferred to a new job at Albuquerque, New Mexico. In school, Gabriela and Troy once again cross paths.

Troy and Gabriela find themselves in a situation where they have to listen to their hearts more than to people’s opinions about them. Troy and Gabriela end up auditioning for the school’s musical where they become up for the lead roles against brother and sister tandem Sharpay and Ryan Evans.

Sharpay and Ryan Evans have been the stars of their school’s musicals since they started going to East High and now they can’t believe that the school jock has auditioned with the new girl for the latest musical. They feel that people should stay with their cliques and remain committed to a single interest. Even Troy’s basketball teammates make a big deal out of Troy auditioning for the role because in their minds, athletes do not spend their days singing up on stage and trying to become an actor. To them, the whole idea of Troy auditioning for the school musical is just utterly preposterous.

Even Troy’s father is unsupportive of Troy’s new found interest in music and acting. To him, the only way Troy can guarantee that he has a bright future is to focus on his basketball so he can land a college scholarship. He fears the musical will take Troy’s focus off basketball.

Meanwhile, Sharpay discovers Gabriela’s high aptitude for Math and how she was the Math whiz in her former school. She submits Gabriela’s credentials to the Math team in school without the knowledge of Gabriela. Gabriela is instantly recruited by the Math Decathlon team.

Sharpay and Ryan try to make a point that jocks should hang out with jocks, geniuses with geniuses, etc. They are determined to keep Troy on the basketball team and Gabriela on the Math Decathlon team so that they can play the lead roles in the upcoming winter musicale. Sharpay together with Troy’s and Gabriela’s friends device a plan that will help her keep the two lead stars off the musical.

Gabriela’s feelings end up feeling hurt and she decides to give up trying out during the final audition. When Troy makes his peace with Gabriela and they decide to give the audition a shot, Sharpay once again finds a way to move the audition date to coincide with a basketball game and the Math Decathlon.

Thinking the two stars won’t show up for the audition the teacher almost gives the lead roles to Sharpay and Ryan but with the Math Decathlon and the whole basketball team now behind Gabriela and Troy, they are able to work out a plan so that the two can still audition. Troy and Gabriela audition at the last minute and completely blew away the audience that has come to watch them perform.

Another character that plays an important role in Troy and Gabriela landing the much coveted lead roles in Twinkle Town is song-writer & pianist Kelsi Nielsen. Kelsi created all the music for the musical and helps Troy and Gabriela practice the songs. Kelsi Nielsen is played by actress Olesya Rulin.
