holiday by Federal Government to mark the Eid-El-Kabir celebration 2018.
On thursday in Abuja the declaration was made by Retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, Minister of Interior in a statement signed and issued by Dr Mohammed Umar, the Permanent Secretary at the ministry.
The Minister in his speech while wishing Nigerians a happy Eid-El-Kabir celebration, enjoined the citizens to maximize the essence of this period in embracing the virtues of love and sacrifices for the unity and development of the country.
Nigerians both home and abroad was urged to support the administration of PMB(Presedent Muhammad Buhari) in its determination to foster a peaceful and united Nigeria, He added in his statement.

Case in point, the jollof. When Nigerians visit Ghana there is an air of familiarity about the place, some lingo and slangs are commonly used, but their pidgin is still very confusing.

Ghanian cuisine can be a joy to experience and even though the eternal battle over whose jollof is better still rages on, no Nigerian should visit Ghana without tasting the jollof. Shatta Wale is Ghana’s biggest music sensation at the moment. And only recently he has had a war of words with Nigerian pop artistes on social media. As long as you are not one to take these things too seriously, visiting Ghana to see a Shatta Wale show should be on your list of things to do, at least that way you can see what the hype is about yourself and tell if he is as great as he says he really is.

Ghana is blessed with such an impressive stretch of beach line. If you are tired of the Elegushi and Oniru beaches of Lagos, switch it up by exploring the coastline of Labadi and Kobrobite. The president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, has vowed to step down immediately if it can be proven to him that God is real through a selfie.

It was also gathered that he also attacked the Catholic Church for collecting funds from members, accusing it of using donations to "maintain the palaces and the luxurious things that the rest of humanity do not have".

"If you are really helping people, why do you ask money from them?”he asked.

Just recently, the president sparked controversy by calling God "stupid"and questioning certain beliefs, such as the story of creation, the concept of heaven and hell, and the last supper.

Christian groups accused him of insulting God and demanded an apology, to which he reportedly replied: “Not in a million years.”

Duterte, who was allegedly giving an unrehearsed speech on Friday, July 6, said: “If there is anyone of you...who say you’d been to heaven, talked to God, saw him personally, and that he exists, the God is yours, and if he does, it’s true, I will step down the presidency".

“I just need one witness who will say, ‘Those fools at the church ordered me to go to heaven and talk to God. God really exists. We have a picture together and I brought a selfie',” he added during the opening of a science and technology event.

Forty-two-year-old mother, Mercy Segun, was on Wednesday arraigned at a Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja for allegedly beating her daughter and pouring pepper into her vagina.

Mercy, who resides at Idu Gbagyi, Karmo, is facing a three-count of criminal force, assault and causing hurt to a minor. The prosecutor, Mrs. Florence Auhioboh, told the court that the defendant’s neighbour, one Gift Afegua, reported the matter at the Karmo Police Station on August 22.

The judge, Mr. Abubakar Sadiq, granted Mercy bail in the sum of N30,000, with a surety in like sum. He ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and adjourned the case till September 25 for hearing.

ASUU REJECTS MEETING WITH FG OVER STRIKE

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Tuesday, August 29, shunned a meeting with the federal government. According to Channels Television, Biodun Ogunyemi, the ASUU president, confirmed that the union will not attend the meeting. FARMER ATTACKED BY FULANI HERDSMEN IN ENUGU STATE

The Enugu State Police Command,prevented break down of law and order on Friday, in Ozalla in Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that a man identified as one Ndubueze Oboro was attacked by a suspected Fulani herdsman at his farm in Umane Ngene Bush.

The suspect allegedly gave the victim matchete cut on his back shoulder and chopped off five of the fingers.

The Academic Staff Union Of Universities (ASUU) will finally meet today to decide the next move on whether to suspend or continue their earlier declared indefinite strike.

A crucial National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is going on to decide on offers made by the Federal Government team last week to persuade its striking members to return to work.

Ahead of the NEC meeting, various zones of ASUU had met also to consider the offer as well as inputs from the various branches for presentation to the NEC.

ASUU had embarked on an indefinite strike on August 14, accusing government of failure to redeem the terms of agreement signed in 2009 and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) endorsed by both parties in 2012.

One of the zonal coordinators of ASUU told Saturday Sun: “I must state that the offer from the Federal Government is a far cry from our members’ expectations. Let us see what comes out of this emergency NEC meeting. Many of our members are not happy with the way government is handling our demands. It is up to NEC to take a position on the on-going strike. Our members are prepared for a long strike, but it depends on the government.”

He debunked a claim by the Education Minister that ASUU would call off the strike this week, saying, “we didn’t promise the minister anything. We told the government team that we are going to consult with our members on what government has offered”.

REASONS WHY JAMB REDUCE THE ADMISSION CUT-OFF MARKS

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that the decision to reduce the cut-off marks for admission into tertiary institutions was done by stakeholders in the education sector.

The examination body had been criticised for the new cut of mark it released for the 2017/2018 academic session but it revealed that this was done to make the process more flexible.

Vanguard reports that Prof. Ishaq Oloyede who is the registrar of JAMB allayed the fears of Nigerians insinuating that it was a testament to the failure in the sector.

He said the board recommendation was to only provide the institutions with a benchmark and that universities could raise their cut off marks above 120 but not more than 180.

He said: “With this decision, universities are not to go below the minimum 120 cut-off points adopted by the meeting for admissions.

“What JAMB did was a recommendation, we only determined the minimum, whatever the various institutions determine as their admission cut-off mark is their decisions. The Senate and academic boards of universities should be allowed to determine their cut-off marks.”

Chief Afe Babalola in his reaction rejected the new cut-off mark noting that he enjoyed good and quality education and therefore expressed worry over the new direction education was taking in the country.

He said: “On June 3, last year, a day after the Federal Government announced the scrapping of the Post-UTME as part of the qualifying procedure for admission into Nigerian universities, I cautioned in a write-up that was published in many Nigerian newspapers that that singular step was nothing but a calamitous mistake.

“Good enough, the Federal Government, last week, rescinded that position in favour of the Senate of individual universities exercising its statutory powers of determining who qualifies to be admitted into its university.

“The euphoria that greeted the reinstatement of the Post-UTME by protagonists of quality education was still very thick in the air before the air was fouled again yesterday (Tuesday), when JAMB announced the reduction of cut off marks for students angling for admission into Nigerian universities.

“As a stakeholder in the education sector, I enjoyed good and quality primary school education when the pass mark was a minimum of 50 per cent. I am, therefore, worried and curious that this far-reaching decision could be taken without due consideration for its implication on the quality of education on offer in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

“My position is that there is an urgent need for education summit to be attended by regulators and operators as well as well-meaning stakeholders in education to diffuse this thick ice of confusion that has engulfed our education landscape.”

These decisions were taken at the 2017 Combined Policy Meetings on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria which ended on Tuesday, August 22.

2017/2018 JAMB ADMISSION CUT-OFF MARKS

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Tuesday fixed the cut-off marks for admission into higher institutions of learning in the country for the 2017/2018 academic session.

At a policy meeting held with the heads of institutions and other education regulatory bodies in Abuja, the examination body ratified 120 as the minimum mark for degree-awarding institutions.

The meeting at the National Judicial Institute, Abuja, had in attendance vice chancellors, Rectors, Provosts and Registrars of tertiary institutions.

For the polytechnics, the lowest mark that qualifies a candidate for admission is 100, while the highest that an institution can fix is 180. Same mark applies to Colleges of Education.

The admission cut-off mark for Innovative Enterprise Institutions ranges between 110 and 120.

Leading heads of institutions in attendance to agree on the marks, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Isiaq Oloyede, said the newly agreed marks would over-ride the previous marks submitted by the institutions.

Oloyede warned that the Board would not allow any institution to go below the ratified marks in their admission process.

He, however, said the reduction in the 2017/2018 admission cut-off marks does not portend any danger for education standard and does not translate to a fall in education standard.

The JAMB registrar said the decisions on first choice candidates by universities would end on October 15, while the second choice candidates would end on December 15; after which the remaining students will be available in the market place for other institutions till the January closing date.

He disclosed that a Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) would be used to streamline admission processes among institutions, as it addresses challenges associated with the former approach.

He said: “We should not be sentimental in fixing our cut-off mark; we need not over-dramatise issue of cut-off mark.

“In order to enhance transparency, no automated admission for those without the necessary requirements will be tolerated.”

Speaking further, Oloyede said the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, has reabsorbed the conduct of Post-UTME examination as a prerequisite for admission into tertiary institutions.

According to him, the cancellation of post-UTME was a mistake, urging JAMB to ensure that fee for the examination should not exceed N2,000.

FG Demands IPOB Leader’s Immediate Return To Prison

The Federal Government has urged the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to revoke

the bail it granted Nnamdi Kanu and return him to prison.

FG argued that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who was granted bail on April 25, 2017 on health grounds had not only breached the conditions attached to his bail but had conducted himself in manners that threaten public peace.

In a counter-motion, filed by Magaji Labaran of the Federal Ministry of Justice, FG urged the court to dismiss an application by Kanu, seeking a review of his bail conditions. In the suit, FG argues:

“The offence for which he (Kanu) is standing trial is not ordinarily bailable; the court, not withstanding, granted bail to the 1st defendant/applicant (Kanu) on health grounds on 25th April 2017.

“Among other conditions for the bail of the 1st defendant is that he should not be seen in a crowd exceeding 10 people; that he should not grant any interviews, hold or attend any rallies; that he should file, in court, medical updates of his health status every month. The bail conditions were perfected by the 1st defendant/applicant, which he is currently enjoying.

“Rather than observing all the conditions listed above, the 1st defendant, in fragrant disobedience to the court order, flouted all conditions given by the court.

“The 1st defendant equally incited his members to disrupt, disallow and boycott elections in South East states, starting with Anambra State gubernatorial election scheduled for November 18 if the Federal Government failed to hold referendum for the realisation of the state of Biafra.

“The 1st defendant has already declared the bail conditions given by the court unconstitutional before approaching this court with the application for variation. Rather than showing remorse for his actions, the 1st defendant approached this court with an application for a review of the same conditions for the bail which he grossly flouted.

“Considering the above, that the 1st applicant has violated the conditions on which the terms of his bail were premised, we urged this court to commit the defendant to prison by invoking the provision of Section 173(2)(B) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

“We categorically state that justice would have been denied the state by this court, if the state is not protected from the offences being perpetrated by the 1st defendant/applicant, who is currently on bail.”

Nnamdi Kanu and four other IPOB members – Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu, David Nwawuisi and Bright Chimezie – are being tried before the Federal High Court, Abuja on offences relating to conspiracy and treasonable felony.

In a related development, three Igbo groups – the World Igbo Youth Movement, Igbo Students’ Forum and Igbo Diaspora Women Professionals have warned the Federal Government against any plans to re-arrest Nnamdi Kanu.

The groups argue that the action of the Coalition of Northern Youths which issued a quit notice to Igbos residing in the north, was more offensive than the activities of Kanu’s IPOB.

They warned that they would not watch calmly as Igbos are driven out of the north, adding that IPOB was simply seeking how to actualize a sovereign Biafran state, through peaceful means.

In a joint statement signed by Mazi Alex Okemiri for the World Igbo Youth Council; Prof. Helen Ogbonna for the Igbo Diaspora Women Professionals and Comrade Obi Izuo for the Igbo Students’ Forum, the groups stated:

“We caution that Nigeria may cease to exist if Nnamdi Kanu is re-arrested.

“This may also be the fate of the country if the planned October 1 massacre is carried out against Ndigbo living in the north.”

The groups also urged Igbo indigenes to run for the presidency in the 2019 general elections adding that there was no turning back on the Igbo presidency project in 2019.

Strike: FG, ASUU meeting ends in deadlock

ABUJA— The meeting held between the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday, to resolve the ongoing strike embarked upon the union ended in a deadlock.

reconvene within a week to continue the negotiations.

While Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, and his counterpart in Education, Adamu Adamu, represented the Federal Government, ASUU president, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, led the union’s team.

Vanguard investigation revealed that the government made some offers during the less than one hour meeting, which both sides refused to disclose to the media.

It was learned that the offers were, however, acceptable to the union leaders.

Briefing newsmen shortly after the meeting, both sides said there was tremendous progress, following offers made by government and position of the union on the new offers.

But both the representatives of government and ASUU refused to disclose the offers just as ASUU President said he was taking the deliberations and offers by government to members, with a view to responding appropriately to them within one week.

Ngige said: “The meeting, as you can see, was not very long and we touched on various areas of the dispute. The major issue is for us to see that the strike is called off so that our children can go back to school and ASUU graciously said they would come back to us on a date within the next one week.”

On his part, ASUU president, Prof. Ogunyemi, said: “Well, like the Honourable Minister said, there were some offers by government and we have taken copious notes of their offers but we have to get back to our members, lay all the information available to them first to consider and advise us.

“So, based on their advice, based on their positions, we will come back to government, with a view to getting responses.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said yesterday, that the on-going strike by ASUU would be called off next week, adding that N53 billion would be released to the union.

Speaking before the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, led by Senator Jibrin Barau APC, Kano North, the Minister disclosed that the executive arm of government had commenced plans to ensure that it honoured the agreement with ASUU.

The Minister, who noted that he had written to the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, for the money, disclosed that she had already approved the money, adding that the money would be paid on Monday when the striking lecturers would receive the cheque.

He said: “ASUU asked for N23billion to be paid, but we said the condition for getting the N23billion was for them to account for the N30billion they had taken and they were not able to account for it.

“The Minister of Finance undertook to do the audit from the ministry and we agreed that the result will be known in six months. During that six months, government undertook to be paying ASUU N1.5billion each month during the time they were waiting for this.

‘’However, their grouse was that the forensic audit promised by the Minister of Finance had not been done and the money promised not paid.

“So, at our meeting two days ago, the agreement was to pay them all and do forensic audit on the entire N53billion.

“That was what I tried to do yesterday (Wednesday). I wrote to the Minister of Finance and she has already approved and this money will be paid. Probably, by Monday, they will be able to receive the cheque.

“We didn’t agree with ASUU on their request that TSA should be taken out. I told them that it is not possible because it is a new policy and government is not going to change it for anyone.

“Concerning their salary short fall, we said the reason springs from universities employing people without proper authority.

“For instance, a university can just decide to go and recruit 50 people without notifying IPPIS. So, what they are going to get is the money they got last month, which will not be sufficient for them. We have told them that institutions should, henceforth, stop doing that and they accepted.

“There is the issue of registration of their pension commission. I think they have one or two issues to iron out with PENCOM and I believe they will also be able to solve the problem within a week.

“The issue of renegotiation is already ongoing, which will not affect what we have said. I have already written a letter formalizing the meeting and all the agreements we had with ASUU and gave them the letter yesterday.

“From the way they received it, I think it is possible that the strike will be called off within a week maximum.”

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Jibrin Barau, commended the Minister for his efforts towards ensuring that the situation was resolved and the strike called off.
